New Wave Computer Technology And The Administration Of Speech Communication Performance Courses, Chris R. Sawyer, Ralph R. Behnke Jan 1998

New Wave Computer Technology And The Administration Of Speech Communication Performance Courses, Chris R. Sawyer, Ralph R. Behnke

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article talks about the continued interest of the speech communication field in technology-supported instruction. Earlier detailed descriptions of teaching/learning laboratories in speech communication are based upon older computer-assisted instruction models and such laboratories were financially out of reach for most small-to-average sized departments. Recent, dramatic enhancements of the memories and processing speeds of microcomputers has made them ideal for recording, editing, and replaying sound supported motion picture clips of speech presentations. Clearly, evaluating student performance and providing substantial and prompt instructional feedback can easily be accommodated by the course web site. Aside from the interactive testing and automated grading …

A Speech Communication Program In Malaysia: Case Study In The Conundrums Of Teaching Abroad, Robert C. Dick, Brenda M. Robinson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article deals with a study which aims to discover directly the unique elements of the culture of the Institut Teknologi MARA/Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities (ITM/MUCIA) students that affect their speech communication. There are multiple influences on student behaviors and no generalizations can he made to fit all students at MUCIA. But, there were some characteristics that were extremely common. A survey of the ITM/MUCIA faculty and staff, from a wide cross-section of Americans and Malaysians, revealed near unanimity on strengths and weaknesses of Malaysian students, reflecting the nature of their earlier learning styles. The substance of classroom …

An Overview Of The Methylxanthines And Their Regulation In The Horse, J Daniel Harkins, W. Allen Rees, G. D. Mundy, Scott D. Stanley, Thomas Tobin Jan 1998

An Overview Of The Methylxanthines And Their Regulation In The Horse, J Daniel Harkins, W. Allen Rees, G. D. Mundy, Scott D. Stanley, Thomas Tobin

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Caffiene, theophylline and theobromine are naturally occurring members of the methylxanthine family;pentoxfylline, dyphylline and enprofylline are structurally related synthetic pharmaceuticals. Caffiene has predominantly central nervous system effects, theophylline, dyphylline and enprofylline have predominantly bronchodilator effects, while theobromine is associated with diuretic responses. Pentoxfylline is thought to increase red cell deformability and facillitate blood flow through capillary beds. The methylxanthines are not highly potent agents; they are typically administered in gram doses and they tend to have relatively long half-lives. They remain detectable in plasma and urine for relatively long periods. Similarly, traces of the naturally occurring members of this family …

Focus, Larry Burke (Editor) Jan 1998

Focus, Larry Burke (Editor)

FOCUS on Boise State

Gone is the simple one-room schoolhouse where the teacher cut the wood, built the fire and taught the students- all of whom likely came from similar backgrounds. Today's classrooms are filled with children from varied cultures and with different learning abilities. Schools are guiding students in skills once reserved strictly for parents. This issue of FOCUS illuminates the challenges facing educators and the progress they are making to meet these increasing demands. Chuck Scheer cover photo.

A Tale Of Two Chickens: Exploring The Social And Economic Implications Of Our Food Choices, Laura Bainbridge Jan 1998

A Tale Of Two Chickens: Exploring The Social And Economic Implications Of Our Food Choices, Laura Bainbridge

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

A century ago chicken was considered a luxury item. In fact, people would eat steak or lobster when they could not afford chicken and ladies' magazines advised on how to substitute veal for chicken in recipes (Gordon, 1996). In 1928, President Hoover promised "a chicken in every pot", but it was not until the 1960's that the poultry industry really took off. Today, there are 15 chickens in every pot; the average American consumes 71.8 pounds of broiler meat annually (Oberholtzer, 1997). Where does all of this chicken come from? Who grows the chicken we eat and how do they …

Crystal Structure Of Apo-Glycine N-Methyltransferase (Gnmt), R. Pattanayek, M. E. Newcomer, C. Wagner

Faculty Publications

The crystal structure of the recombinant apo-form of glycine N- methyltransferase (GNMT) has been determined at 2.5 Å resolution. GNMT is a tetrameric enzyme (monomer M(r) = 32,423D(a), 292 amino acids) that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) to glycine with the formation of S-adenosylhomocysteine (AdoHcy) and sarcosine (N- methylglycine). GNMT is a regulatory enzyme, which is inhibited by 5- methyltetrahydrofolate pentaglutamate and believed to control the ratio of AdoMet to AdoHcy in tissues. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic space group P21212 (a = 85.39, b = 174.21, c = 44.71 Å) and contain one …

Performance And Metabolic Responses Of Young Dairy Calves Fed Diets Supplemented With Chromium Tripicolinate, C. L. Depew, L. D. Bunting, J. M. Fernandez, D. L. Thompson, R. W. Adkinson

Faculty Publications

Forty-two Holstein calves were used to study performance and metabolic responses when milk replacer and then postweaning starter were supplemented with 1 ppm of Cr as Cr-tripicolinate. From birth through 8 wk of age, supplemental Cr tended to improve the growth performance of bull calves but not of heifer calves. Starter intake and feed efficiency were not affected by supplemental Cr. From 1 to 5 wk of age, plasma cortisol concentrations sampled just prior to feeding decreased, and concentrations of insulinlike growth factor-I increased. All calves appeared to become less sensitive to insulin as they aged. From 1 to 5 …

Missing From The Miracle: Microcredit And Urban Market Women In Bolivia, Stephanie L. Small Jan 1998

Missing From The Miracle: Microcredit And Urban Market Women In Bolivia, Stephanie L. Small

Honors Theses

On an organizational level supporting the success story of microcredit allows banks to profit, as seen with BancoSol. It allows organizations to continue to receive funding, as seen with FIE. It allows NGOs to simplify the problem of poverty to one of lack of credit and personal ignorance. By doing so, NGOs can maintain training programs which place the client at fault for her poverty, as seen in ProMujer. They appeal to a common sense understanding of poverty and its causes and as a result, continue to receive the necessary funding. The Journal of Commerce is a 170 year old …

Principal Perceptions Of School Breakfast Programs In Small Enrollment Illinois School Districts, Teresa M. Martin Jan 1998

Principal Perceptions Of School Breakfast Programs In Small Enrollment Illinois School Districts, Teresa M. Martin

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate school breakfast programs in small enrollment districts in Illinois. The review of literature and research indicated that school breakfast programs may improve student achievement, behavior and attendance, and that providing a breakfast to hungry children may increase their readiness to learn.

The study took place in 1997-98, using a survey instrument designed by the author to collect perceptions about school breakfast programs from Illinois principals. A random sample of 75 principals was selected from all Illinois school districts with student enrollments of less than 1,000 which had breakfast programs. Surveys were returned …

A Comparison Of Measures In Physical Fitness And Biological Maturity Between Female Gymnasts And Females Not Involved In Organized Sport, Cara Kokenes Jan 1998

A Comparison Of Measures In Physical Fitness And Biological Maturity Between Female Gymnasts And Females Not Involved In Organized Sport, Cara Kokenes

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in physical fitness and biological development between two groups of twelve year old females. One group consisted of idividuals who had been involved in competitive sport for at least two years while the other group was not involved in organized sport. Two groups of 20 subjects were examined in terms of height, weight, flexibility, strength, body composition, maturation, eating attitudes, and cardiorespiratory endurance. The results indicated that the gymnasts were significantly (p<.05) shorter, lighter, stronger in regard to left hand grip strength, lower in percent body fat, less biologically mature, and had greater cardiorespiratory fitness than the non-gymnasts. No significant differences were observed in right hand grip strength or eating attitudes. It was concluded that maturation level as well as gymnastic training played a major role in influencing values obtained through measurements of physical fitness.

Effects Of Locus Of Control And Timing Of Retirement On Retirement Satisfaction, Denise A. Lathrop

Masters Theses

Previous research to determine which factors predict one's satisfaction with retirement documents varying results. 200 retired Eastern Illinois University professors were surveyed to determine the effects of two factors, locus of control and timing of retirement, considered important on retirement satisfaction. A comparison was made between internal and external locus of control subjects who were placed into three conditions: those who retire early (before age 61), those who retire within the normal or average range (ages 62-66), and those who retire late (later than age 67). The first hypothesis was that those who retire early will have the highest level …
