Impact Of Temperature And Humidity On Host-Pathogen Interactions Between Beauveria Bassiana And A Coccinellid, R. R. James, B. A. Croft, B. T. Shaffer, B. Lighthart Jan 1998

Impact Of Temperature And Humidity On Host-Pathogen Interactions Between Beauveria Bassiana And A Coccinellid, R. R. James, B. A. Croft, B. T. Shaffer, B. Lighthart

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

We tested the effect of 2 exposure methods and 2 environmental factors, temperature and humidity, on Beauceria bassiana (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes) mycosis in Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). We found that the standard EPA bioassay method of exposing nontarget insects by immersion resulted in a per-insect dose that was 5 times greater than that from spray applications. However, this difference did not significantly affect mycosis levels in a simulation of field applications conducted in the greenhouse. In contrast, differences in environmental conditions between the laboratory and greenhouse had a large effect on mycosis. Constant temperatures between 15 and 35°C had a …

Herbivore Adaptations To A Low-Nutrient Food: Weed Biological Control Specialist Spodoptera Pectinicornis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Fed The Floating Aquatic Plant Pistia Stratiotes, G. S. Wheeler, T. K. Van, T. D. Center Jan 1998

Herbivore Adaptations To A Low-Nutrient Food: Weed Biological Control Specialist Spodoptera Pectinicornis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Fed The Floating Aquatic Plant Pistia Stratiotes, G. S. Wheeler, T. K. Van, T. D. Center

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Performance of the specialist herbivore Spodoptera pectinicomis (Hampson) was studied when fed the floating aquatic plant waterlettuce, Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae). Plants were either collected from 6 populations in southern Florida or from plants grown with low or high fertilizer levels. Consumption of leaves with increasing toughness resulted in increased larval mortality (>80%); most mortality occurred during the first 2 instars. Larvae compensated for low-nitrogen leaves by increasing fresh weight consumption 3-fold. Both developmental time and biomass gain were effected by the source of the plants but these performance parameters were not directly related to either leaf toughness or …

Oviposition Response Of Cotesia Plutellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) To Sterile And Normal Diamondback Moth (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) Larvae, J. S. Okine, E. R. Mitchell, J. Carpenter, C. Y. Hu Jan 1998

Oviposition Response Of Cotesia Plutellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) To Sterile And Normal Diamondback Moth (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) Larvae, J. S. Okine, E. R. Mitchell, J. Carpenter, C. Y. Hu

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Augmentative release of the endoparasitoid Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov) to control diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), in cabbage, Brassica oleracea variety capitata (L.), would be expensive for growers if done continually during a growing season. A method for establishing released parasitoids would be very beneficial in the control of this pest. One method under consideration is to use sterile diamondback moth larvae deposited on 'nursery' collard plants as hosts for C. plutellae to allow the parasitoid to build up in numbers and spread into adjacent cabbage fields. Therefore, the ability of C. plutellae to accept and develop successfully in normal and …

G98-1358 Feeding To Maximize Protein And Fat, Rick J. Grant Jan 1998

G98-1358 Feeding To Maximize Protein And Fat, Rick J. Grant

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes feeding guidelines to increase milk fat and protein production.

Proper feeding management of dairy herds can both improve the economy of production and provide a healthier cow. To achieve these goals, producers must feed to increase production of milk with maximum levels of milk fat and protein.

Milk solids components include fat, protein, lactose and minerals. Normal values for milk fat range from 3.7 percent (Holstein) to 4.9 percent (Jersey); milk protein ranges from 3.1 percent (Holstein) to 3.8 percent (Jersey). Lactose is usually 4.6–4.8 percent for all breeds; minerals (ash) average .74 percent. Because current milk …

Measurement And Inheritance Of Resistance To Sheath Blight Caused By Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn In Rice., Xueyan Sha

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sheath blight (ShB), caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn, has been the most destructive rice disease in Louisiana. To breed ShB resistant varieties, an effective procedure for screening progenies of segregating populations is required and detailed knowledge of the mode-of-inheritance of partial ShB resistance is also necessary. In this study four inoculation methods; rice hull/grain mixture (MIX), rice straw, toothpick, and brown rice, along with five assessment systems; 0-9 rating scale (RAT9), relative lesion height (RLH), disease severity (DS), disease incidence, and lesion height were compared on nine rice genotypes showing different resistance levels to ShB. Progenies of segregating populations from …

Ecology And Loss Assessment Of Selected Homopteran Pests On Sugarcane: Interactions With The Fire Ant, Solenopsis Wagneri Santschi., Andrew Evans Woolwine

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field studies in 1995, 1996, and 1997, using insecticides to alter population densities of yellow sugarcane aphid, Sipha flava (Forbes), West Indian canefly, Saccharosydne saccharivora (Westwood) and the pink sugarcane mealybug, Saccharicoccus sacchari (Cockerell), indicated that sugarcane infested by these insects did not suffer sugar quality loss (as measured by brix, polarity, sucrose, purity, and theoretical recoverable sugar (TRS)). There was no apparent indication that Homoptera stressed sugarcane (indicated by concentrations of free amino acids in extracted sugarcane juice). A very slight, but significant increase in the percent brix was observed in sugarcane juice extracted from stalks washed free of …

An Assessment Of The Zimbabwe Family Planning Programme: Results From The 1996 Situation Analysis Study, Lewis Ndhlovu, Hazel M.B. Dube, Caroline S. Marangwanda

Reproductive Health

Within the past ten years, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) has conducted two major studies for assessing the availability and quality of reproductive health services. The two studies, generally referred to as Situation Analysis studies, were conducted in 1991 and 1996. The 1996 survey collected data from 192 health facilities spread throughout Zimbabwe. During this exercise, an inventory of physical facilities, equipment, and educational materials was taken. In addition, 758 provider–client interactions of new and revisit clients were observed. Exit interviews were conducted with service providers, and with family planning and maternal and child health clients. In this …

Welfare Reform Under The Personal Responsibility Act: Ending Welfare As We Know It Or Governmental Child Abuse, Nancy A. Wright

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In August of 1996, in an effort to "end welfare as we know it", Congress passed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 ("the Act"). The Act terminates welfare entitlement programs which have provided crucial safety nets for indigent families for the past sixty-two years. The Act also mandates that states impose work requirements and time limits on the length of time poor families can receive public assistance. In addition, the Act permits states to deny assistance to teenage mothers or to children born to parents more than ten months after the family went on welfare.

The Sign Of The Four": Judicial Assignment And The Rule Of Law, Jonathan L. Entin

Faculty Publications

This article will examine the issues of judicial assignment. Then the article will return to the Cameron situation in an effort to put that controversy into broader perspective. Finally, the article will consider state procedures that, for practical purposes, authorize litigants to make peremptory challenges to judges in certain circumstances. Those procedures have implications for the discussion of random assignments and for the way we think about Judge Cameron's charges.

Predator Urines As Chemical Barriers To White-Tailed Deer, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans, Laura A. Tyson Jan 1998

Predator Urines As Chemical Barriers To White-Tailed Deer, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans, Laura A. Tyson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

The authors assessed whether bobcat (Lynx rufus) or coyote (Canis latrans) urine could reduce white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) use of established feeding areas or trails. A four-week experiment evaluating deer use of eight feeding stations, four each with coyote or bobcat urine was conducted at a 2,200 ha fenced facility in northern Ohio with high deer densities (38/km2). At this same facility, the authors also monitored deer use of four trails where coyote urine was applied. For both experiments, urine was placed in holders positioned at ground level within 2 m of …

Effect Of Degradable Intake Protein Level On Finishing Cattle Performance And Ruminal Metabolism, D. H. Shain, Rick Stock, Terry J. Klopfenstein, D. W. Herold

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two finishing trials and a metabolism trial were conducted to evaluate level of supplemental degradable intake (crude) protein (DIP) in finishing diets on cattle performance, carcass characteristics, and ruminal metabolism. Finishing trials were conducted in two consecutive years using 128 crossbred yearling steers (BW = 343 ± 5 kg, Trial 1) and 176 crossbred yearling steers (BW = 375 ± 4 kg, Trial 2) in a randomized complete block design. Steers were fed dry-rolled corn diets containing urea at 0, .88, 1.34, or 1.96% (DM basis). No differences in DMI, daily gain, or feed efficiency were noted among steers receiving …

Complementary Responses Between Feather Meal And Poultry By-Product Meal With Or Without Ruminally Protected Methionine And Lysine In Growing Calves, M. J. Klemesrud, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Austin Lewis Jan 1998

Complementary Responses Between Feather Meal And Poultry By-Product Meal With Or Without Ruminally Protected Methionine And Lysine In Growing Calves, M. J. Klemesrud, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Austin Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

We evaluated feather meal (FTH) and poultry by-product meal (PBM) as complementary protein sources for growing calves. In a replicated 84-d growth trial, individually fed steer calves (n = 120; 252 ± 24 kg) were supplemented with urea or with graded levels of soybean meal (SBM), FTH, PBM, or 2/3 FTH:1/3 PBM (CP basis). Protein efficiency, calculated as gain above the urea control vs natural protein intake using the slope-ratio technique, was greater for FTH than for SBM, PBM, and 2/3 FTH:1/3 PBM ( P < .10). Addition of ruminally protected methionine and lysine did not affect protein efficiency ( P > .30) for FTH, PBM, or 2/3 FTH:1/3 PBM. Even though true protein digestibility in the …

Effect Of Acute Treatment With Progesterone On The Timing And Synchrony Of Ovulation In Bos Indicus Heifers Treated With A Norgestomet Implant For 17 Days, J. Cavalieri, J. E. Kinder, L. A. Fitzpatrick

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The aim of the present study was to develop a treatment protocol for the precise synchronization of oestrus that would avoid the development of persistent dominant ovarian follicles. Bos indicus heifers, in which oestrous cycles had been presynchronized, were allocated randomly, according to the day of their oestrous cycle, to one of five treatment groups. All heifers received a subcutaneous ear implant containing 3 mg of norgestomet for 17 days starting on day 0 and an injection of an analogue of prostaglandin F2α on days 0 and 4. Heifers in group 1 (control group; n = 7) received no …

Variances Of Direct Genetic Effects, Maternal Genetic Effects, And Cytoplasmic Inheritance Effects For Milk Yield, Fat Yield, And Fat Percentage, L. G. Albuquerque, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Milk yield, fat yield, and fat percentage during the first three lactations were studied using New York Holsteins that were milked twice daily over a 305-d, mature equivalent lactation. Those data were used to estimate variances from direct and maternal genetic effects, cytoplasmic effects, sire by herd interaction, and cow permanent environmental effects. Cytoplasmic line was traced to the last female ancestor using DHI records from 1950 through 1991. Records were 138,869 lactations of 68,063 cows calving from 1980 through 1991. Ten random samples were based on herd code. Samples averaged 4926 dams and 2026 cytoplasmic lines. Model also included …

The Effects Of Habitual Physical Activity On Number Of Colds And Incidence Of Cold Symptoms, Katie Lynn Maniatis

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to compare frequency of colds and symptoms of upper respiratory infection in college students who have different levels of habitual physical activity. Subjects were Eastern Illinois University students (N=535, aged 18-25). A survey was conducted which included questions inquiring about demographic information, physical activity habits, the number of colds contracted the month before the survey, and symptom number and severity. Data collection occurred between February 12th and March 1st, 1998. This particular time period was chosen for several reasons, including that student stress level should have been lower than at the beginning or end …
