Role Of The Registered Dietitian In Oncology Care In Rochester, Ny, Natalie Gennett Jan 1998

Role Of The Registered Dietitian In Oncology Care In Rochester, Ny, Natalie Gennett

Theses

Annually, 6500 cancer patients receive their care in Rochester, NY. This region is served by over 200 registered dietitians (RD's). Published data showing the number of oncology patients being supported by medical nutrition therapy from an RD is unavailable; anecdotal information indicates referral numbers are very small perhaps 1% or less. The purpose of this study was to explore RD involvement in oncology care in Rochester, NY. A survey of nutritional beliefs and practices in oncology care was mailed to 250 RD's and registered dietetic technicians with certified dietitian-nutritionist (CDN) credentials. Of the 250 questionnaires distributed, 137 (55%) surveys were …

Trends In The Use Of Technology In Hospital Menu System, Karen Wunder

Theses

As the twenty-first century approaches, hospital foodservice directors are faced with the conflicting tasks of cutting costs in response to various budgetary restraints while also providing quality service to customers with increased expectations in an increasing competitive environment. New technologies such as computerized, interactive menu systems have been developed in an attempt to offer increased customer satisfaction while also cutting costs at all levels. The focus of this study was to determine how hospitals nationwide were responding to the dilemma of cost cutting while achieving increased quality standards and in what ways technologies were being embraced to provide service excellence …

The nineties have proven to be a time of rapid change. The changes implemented by the Food and Nutritional Services of Optima Health were rapid and unsettling for most staff. This case study discusses what went well, what did not go as …

Theses

This study was conducted within a larger investigation conducted by Dr. Geoffrey Williams at the Genesse Hospital in Rochester New York. The purpose of Dr. Williams's investigation was to evaluate the long-term effects and cost effectiveness of a brief intervention to facilitate self-management among a sample of adults with diabetes mellitus coming in for regular outpatient visits. As part of the investigation, Type I patients were called three times within a two week period to obtain a 24-hour dietary recall. This information was used to determine adherence. The Type II patients within the study were required to fill out a …

Diacylglycerol pyrophosphate (DGPP) is involved in a putative novel lipid signaling pathway. DGPP phosphatase (DGPP phosphohydrolase) is a membrane-associated 34-kDa enzyme fromSaccharomyces cerevisiae which catalyzes the dephosphorylation of DGPP to yield phosphatidate (PA) and then catalyzes the dephosphorylation of PA to yield diacylglycerol. Amino acid sequence information derived from DGPP phosphatase was used to identify and isolate the DPP1(diacylglycerol pyrophosphatephosphatase) gene encoding the enzyme. Multicopy plasmids containing the DPP1 gene directed a 10-fold overexpression of DGPP phosphatase activity in S. cerevisiae. The heterologous expression of the S. cerevisiae DPP1 gene in Sf-9 insect cells resulted in a …

Managing Seedling Emergence Of Cuphea In Iowa, W. W. Roath Jan 1998

Managing Seedling Emergence Of Cuphea In Iowa, W. W. Roath

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Cuphea, a western hemisphere genus of some 260 species, has been proposed as a domestic source of medium-chain fatty acids. These fatty acids are used primarily in soap and detergent manufacture and are presently extracted from imported tropical oils or from petroleum. Considerable difficulty in obtaining consistent plant stands with direct seeding has been experienced at two Iowa locations. Trials were initiated in 1987 and continued through 1994 to test various treatments upon seedling emergence of C. laminuligera Koehne, C lanceolata Ait., and hybrid C. viscosissima Jacq. X C. lanceolata. These treatments included planting depths from 1.3 to 6.4 cm, …

Gulf of Mexico Science

Following the tradition started at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (1989), and continued at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (1992), the third North American Echinoderms Meeting was sponsored by the Marine Science Consortium and held at the Wallops Island Marine Science Center in August of 1998. In keeping with the practices of prior meetings, this meeting provided a forum for colleagues from throughout North America to share current work, and fostered communication between researchers whose work is based upon some aspect of the biology of Echinodermata. Presentations covered a range of topics, from evolutionary relationships to ecological processes and from …

The Weekly Adjustment Indicators Checklist: An Application In The Child Welfare Field, Michael H. Epstein, Madhavi Jayanthi, Janet Mckelvey, Deborah Holderness, Erin Frankenberry

Journal of Family Strengths

Research on the effectiveness of various home-based interventions implemented in the 1980s and 1990s indicates that results have been equivocal. Because of the unique and complex behavioral challenges presented by each family and the need for individualized treatments and long-term interventions for these families, group research and evaluation designs are often insufficient in assessing effectiveness of home-based interventions. Alternative evaluation strategies are needed. The purpose of this exploratory study was two-fold: (a) to investigate the applicability and acceptability of the Weekly Adjustment Indicators Checklist (WAIC) in monitoring adult and child behaviors and (b) to monitor, on an on-going basis, the …

G98-1364 Feeding Children Ages 2 To 5, H. Darlene Martin Jan 1998

G98-1364 Feeding Children Ages 2 To 5, H. Darlene Martin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide defines nutritional needs and healthy eating patterns for children ages 2 to 5.

Children Grow at Their Own Rate

Children move though growth spurts throughout childhood. Usually, a child will grow about 2 1/2 inches and gain about four or five pounds each year between the ages of 2 and 5. By 15 months old, most children have developed enough fine motor skills to feed themselves without help, if allowed to do so. Appetites vary with young children as well as adults. Parents and caregivers need to help promote a healthy pattern of eating rather than using controlling …

G98-1344 Basics Of Feeding Horses: Feeding Management, Kathleen P. Anderson Jan 1998

G98-1344 Basics Of Feeding Horses: Feeding Management, Kathleen P. Anderson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide outlines appropriate practices for feeding horses.

Often, nutritional management of the equine is a misunderstood topic. Successful nutritional management depends upon combining information on the nutrient requirements of different horses and their eating behaviors with the knowledge of how to best meet those requirements. Proper nutritional management is extremely critical in the horse due to the unique arrangement and anatomy of its digestive tract. Often, it is the feeding method, not feed composition, which leads to digestive disorders in horses. This NebGuide includes information on the basic, daily feeding management for horses.
