Genotoxicity Studies Of Roofing Asphalt Fume Condensates In Mammalian Cells., Hongwei Qian
Genotoxicity Studies Of Roofing Asphalt Fume Condensates In Mammalian Cells., Hongwei Qian
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The specific aims of the present investigation were to determine the genotoxicity and potential carcinogenicity of WFC of Type I and Type III roofing asphalt by using different genetic endpoints in mammalian cells in vitro and in rat in vivo. Morphological transformation studies in cultured BALB/c-3T3 cells indicated that at concentrations that allow less than 50% survival, neither of the WFC, with or without the hamster liver S9 activation system, significantly increased foci formation in BALB/c-3T3 cells. The conventional and immunofluorescent staining MN assays showed that both types of WFC caused a significant increase in the frequency of MNC and …
Water Demand Management For Casablanca, Morocco., Mohamed Lahlou
Water Demand Management For Casablanca, Morocco., Mohamed Lahlou
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Water shortages could significantly curtail economic growth and development in Casablanca, Morocco. Conservation programs in Morocco have been implemented only occasionally, usually during a water shortage crisis arising either from technical reasons or from drought. Public awareness activities suffer from a lack of effectiveness and do not fulfill the desired objectives. The purposes of this study are to examine water consumption characteristics in Casablanca and develop approaches for water management to help assure that shortages will not undermine the prospects for sustainable economic development. Research procedures used were the development and estimation of water demand models for the residential/commercial, industrial, …

What Primary Care Physicians Need To Know About Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Delphi Of Experts And A Content Analysis., Barry Thomas Linger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurobiological condition characterized by developmentally inappropriate attention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. ADHD is a growing problem in the United States educational system with an estimated 3 to 5 percent of the school-aged population, or approximately 2 million children and adolescents affected. Substantial scientific research has been conducted to examine the effectiveness of stimulant medication as a treatment for ADHD. Little research, however, has been conducted to examine the preparedness of physicians to diagnose, treat, and monitor children with ADHD. This study determined what essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills primary care physicians …

A Description Of The Instructional And Assessment Practices Of Selected Elementary Teachers., Mary D. Morris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three distinct teachers, recognized by their administrators as excellent, were chosen to participate in a study designed to describe a recent phenomena in education. All three teachers were members of a faculty that was recognized as a Professional Development School in collaboration with the Benedum Foundation. Traditionally educators have looked to their local school district to provide continuing education. This professional development covers a wide range of topics and is given with a random approach. Recently there have been schools that have decided that their instruction and assessment could change to incorporate more alternative methods to accommodate a variety of …
Integrating Media And Information Technologies Through Professional Development Sessions., Paula Denise Nelson
Integrating Media And Information Technologies Through Professional Development Sessions., Paula Denise Nelson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research has shown that teachers have limited knowledge on how to use technology in their instruction (Christmas, 1992). Teachers stated that they needed instruction and ample opportunities to try using computers in the classroom. The surge of technology in the classroom has extended many inservice teachers beyond their abilities and limits. Training is essential for teachers if technology is to be integrated in their teaching rather than merely to be used as drill and practice or a reward for students (Siegel, 1995). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a technology-based staff development program and the …

States And War Coalitions: A Case Study Of The Gulf War., George Sprowls
States And War Coalitions: A Case Study Of The Gulf War., George Sprowls
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation discusses the theoretical and empirical differences between war coalitions and alliances. It also provides some answers to the question: "Why do some nations choose to join war coalitions while other nations, in apparently similar circumstances, choose not to join?" At the systemic level of analysis, dependence on economic aid, membership in a formal alliance with a key participant, and proximity to the conflict are correlated with the level of participation in a war coalition. At the state level, the degree of democratization, levels of regime fragmentation and vulnerability, and the presence of statutory prohibitions against using military force …

Take Center Stage: The Perceived Effect Of Performance-Based Teaching Methodology On Students' Understanding Of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"., Francene Davis Kirk
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This descriptive study was undertaken to determine if the use of performance fostered understanding of A Midsummer Night's Dream, engagement with Shakespeare's text, independence from the teacher, and a positive attitude toward the study of Shakespeare's plays among 39 ninth grade students. In a typical 90 minute period, students read scenes and participated in performance activities followed by discussion or written assignments for 15 days. The students were divided into acting companies to perform a final scene. Acting company meetings and performance activities were recorded. Students completed questionnaires concerning their attitudes toward the study of Shakespeare's plays. Students were interviewed …

A Study Of Heat-Seal Strength In The Presence Of Edible Oil Surface Contamination Of Ethylene-Methacrylic Acid Copolymer Films, David Britt
Theses
Packages made from flexible film often use a heat-sealing process to ensure closure. The process involves joining two surfaces of film with heat and pressure across a period of time. Heat-seal problems arise when another substance partially obstructs the film-to-film contact. This substance acts as a surface contaminant. In packaging operations, the product being packaged is often the source of contamination in the sealing process. Testing heat-seal strength is a primary method for evaluating seal performance of flexible film. Test procedures require contaminant-free film samples to maintain accuracy and precision in results. This study altered the test method to explore …
Replacing A Corrugated Carton With A Multiwall Paper Bag For Food Wraps, Dianne Heiler
Replacing A Corrugated Carton With A Multiwall Paper Bag For Food Wraps, Dianne Heiler
Theses
The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of replacing a corrugated container with a multiwall paper bag for the packaging of food wraps used in the "Quick - Serve" foodservice industry. The study was limited to one specific restaurant chain and for only one size of food wraps. Laboratory testing was used to compare the performance attributes of both package systems. This study will provide a model for quantifying package source reduction when comparing a rigid package design to a flexible one. The results show that, indeed, a multiwall paper bag is a feasible alternative to a …

A Review Of Distributional Methods In The Peoples's Republic Of China, Gaylynn Durkin
Theses
Eastman Kodak Company will begin production of photographic sensitized goods in China in 1998. The purpose of this study was to examine the transportation infrastructure of the country and to estimate whether the distribution environment was likely to be more severe than those previously tested. The study used work previously done by Kodak to examine the magnitude and frequency of package drops in three other countries. While not performing the same instrumented analysis previously undertaken, this study laid the foundation for those types of tests by examining the geography, infrastructure, vehicles and handling cycle used to distribute products in China. …
A Comparative Analysis Of A Returnable/Reusable Packaging System, Susan Starks
A Comparative Analysis Of A Returnable/Reusable Packaging System, Susan Starks
Theses
The primary objective of this study was to determine if the implementation of a returnable/reusable container system was financially viable for a specific company. The study attempted to document all cost parameters involved in making a capital budgeting decision regarding returnable containers. The specific cost parameters applicable to this project were then identified. The actual cost associated with each parameter was then obtained either through quotation or calculation. Several capital budget decision making cost analysis methods were presented. One method which best represented the project's qualifying factors was then chosen. The analysis was completed and the results were presented. The …

Realization As Subsidy, David M. Schizer
Realization As Subsidy, David M. Schizer
Faculty Scholarship
Perhaps no concept in tax law is so well established, and yet so widely criticized, as realization, the rule that defers tax on appreciated property until it is sold. In this Article, Professor Schizer offers a new justification for realization: It is a subsidy for savings. The recent reduction in the capital gains tax rate suggests that Congress wants such a subsidy, the author observes. He then argues that realization has a significant advantage as a subsidy. It is credible, in that taxpayers expect it to strvive long enough for them to collect it This is important, Professor Schizer then …
Class Action Litigation In China, Benjamin L. Liebman
Class Action Litigation In China, Benjamin L. Liebman
Faculty Scholarship
Class struggle has moved to China's courtrooms. Since the passage of China's 1991 Civil Procedure Law (CPL), which explicitly permits class action litigation, multiplaintiff groups have brought suits seeking compensation for harm caused by pollution, false advertising, contract violations, and securities law violations. Although administrative bodies continue to resolve most disputes in China, the increasing prevalence of class actions is one aspect of an explosion in civil litigation over the past decade. Class action litigation has the potential to alter the role courts play in adjudicating disputes, increase access to the courts, and facilitate the independence of the legal profession. …

When I was living in New Haven a number of years ago, a miracle happened that drew people by the thousands to witness evidence of the Divine. A crucifix had been found to appear in the body of an oak tree in the middle of Worchester Square. I went – after all, how often do you get to see that kind of thing? Not surprisingly, at first I couldn't see anything but the usual trunk and limbs of a tree. Yet a believer took the time to show me what was really there, something that my untrained eye could not …

Gender Sex Agency And Discrimination: A Reply To Professor Abrams, Katherine M. Franke

According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, sexual harassment is the fastest-growing area of employment discrimination. In fact, the annual number of sexual harassment complaints filed with the EEOC has more than doubled in the last six years. No one, or at least no one who has given this problem her serious attention, can deny that workplace sexual harassment is a grave problem and that it significantly impedes women's entrance into many sectors of the wage labor market.
Notwithstanding these impressive numbers, sexual harassment legal doctrine remains remarkably undertheorized – particularly by the Supreme Court. For these and other reasons, …
Declining Homicide In New York City: A Tale Of Two Trends, Jeffery Fagan, Franklin E. Zimring, June Kim
Declining Homicide In New York City: A Tale Of Two Trends, Jeffery Fagan, Franklin E. Zimring, June Kim
Faculty Scholarship
The mass media pay plenty of attention to crime and violence in the United States, but very few of the big stories on the American crime beat can be classified as good news. The driveby shootings and carjackings that illuminate nightly news broadcasts are the opposite of good tidings. Most efforts at prevention and law enforcement seem more like reactive attempts to contain ever expanding problems rather than discernable public triumphs. In recent American history, crime rates seem to increase on the front page and moderate in obscurity.
The recent decline in homicides in New York City is an exception …
Denver International Airport: Lessons Learned, C Daniel Prather
Denver International Airport: Lessons Learned, C Daniel Prather
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
"The airport planner, who is required to anticipate conditions 10 to 15 years in the future, must often resort to guesswork" (322). Researching the evolution of Denver International Airport was more than simply a project of interest. These three authors recognize the continuing growth in aviation demand and the need for expanding facilities to accommodate this demand. Indeed, this book was designed to assist major cities worldwide as they are forced to cope with this need for additional supply in airport facilities. In sum, "the need to build new airports and expand existing ones will continue to press communities to …
The General Aviation Revitalization Act Of 1994: An Overview Of Tort Reform, Alan J. Stolzer
The General Aviation Revitalization Act Of 1994: An Overview Of Tort Reform, Alan J. Stolzer
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The aviation industry, not yet a century old, has developed into one of the most robust, visible, and analyzed industries in the world today. Despite its youth, aviation is a sizable industry, employing an estimated nearly 2.5 million people (NewMyer, Kaps & Sharp, 1997), and generating $75 billion of economic activity in the United States (Kane, 1996). Its size, its importance in our society, and, unfortunately, the occasional mishap that occurs in aviation, cause the industry to be constantly in the public eye. One can hardly watch the evening news or read a newspaper and not be exposed to a …
President Clinton And The Rhetoric Of Time, Estrella Cedeno
President Clinton And The Rhetoric Of Time, Estrella Cedeno
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study analyzes President's Clinton 1993 and 1997 inaugural addresses, and his use of time as a rhetorical strategy. Influenced by his situational constraints and based on a definition of the situation that emphasizes time as a paramount element, Clinton is able to articulate an inaugural rhetoric that instead of being passive and contemplative calls for action. In so doing, Clinton's inaugurals finds its uniqueness. I contend that Clinton's rhetoric of time gives meaning to the transformations of the post-industrial revolution and also serves as a form of social control.
