Validity Of Tolman’S Equation: How Large Should A Droplet Be?, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng, A.K. Shchekin

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Surface tension and the length δ (distance between the Gibbs surface of tension Rs and the equimolar surface Re) of simple liquid droplet (Lennard-Jones and Yukawa) are computed over a wide range of droplet sizes up to about 4x106 molecules. The study is based on the Gibbs theory of capillarity combined with the density–functional approach to gas–liquid nucleation. Since this method provides behavior of the surface tension fully consistent with the tension of the planner surface, the constant in Tolman’s equation δx can be determined unequivocally from the asymptotic behavior of σ s . Comparison …

Educating Nomads: Narratives And The Future Of Civic Education, Melvin J. Dubnick Sep 1998

Educating Nomads: Narratives And The Future Of Civic Education, Melvin J. Dubnick

Faculty Publications

The concern for civic education has re-entered the mainstream agenda of American political science. The primary task is to consider what should be done to “reach” the next generation of students. Most efforts in this regard have operated under the assumption that students of the future will be like students of the past. Based on this view, the problem is most often regarded as a matter of selecting an effective way to disseminate relevant knowledge. In this paper I argue for operating on a different set of assumptions, i.e. that we need to take seriously the emergence of the new …

The Ellipso™ Satellite - Application Of Small Satellite Principles To The Space Segment Of A Global Mobile Personal Communications System, John Draim Sep 1998

The Ellipso™ Satellite - Application Of Small Satellite Principles To The Space Segment Of A Global Mobile Personal Communications System, John Draim

Small Satellite Conference

The designers of ELLIPSO have intentionally driven the design of their satellites towards simplicity, and thus lower cost. The service link antennas are state of the art fixed planar arrays mounted on a nadir pointing plane that is always oriented towards the center of the earth. The communications payload uses simple, bent-pipe transponders to avoid the necessity of extensive onboard digital processing. The level of major component redundancy in each satellite is much less than in their more expensive GEO comsat cousins. The effect of a satellite failure is not so severe for ELLIPSO as for a typical GEO satellite …

The Voice: 1991-2000

A lawsuit for $1.5 million in damages filed by a former security officer against the College and a student who accused him of rape will go to trial if not settled by the end of the year. The 1998-1999 school year began with the 129th Convocation. After protest by the Wooster community, the proposal in the Wooster City Council to allow oil drilling in Spangler Park was defeated. The International Students Orientation Committee, the Black Student Orientation Committee, and the Student Orientation Committee arranged events for the incoming class of 2002. Minimum Hardware Navigation Concept For Leo Satellites Using Information Fusion, Klaus Janschek, T. Boge, M. Krasilshikov, V. Dishel, M. Jacobson Sep 1998

Minimum Hardware Navigation Concept For Leo Satellites Using Information Fusion, Klaus Janschek, T. Boge, M. Krasilshikov, V. Dishel, M. Jacobson

Small Satellite Conference

Improved operational autonomy is required for the operation of any single satellite within a LEO satellite network. One onboard function, which is an interesting candidate to be implemented with an increased level of onboard autonomy is apparently the navigation function, which is in charge of the determination of the instantaneous satellite orbital position and attitude. This paper aims to demonstrate the capabilities of a minimum hardware configuration which could be an interesting candidate for the cost optimized implementation of the onboard navigation function. The hardware baseline consists of one integrated GPS/GLONASS receiver as primary equipment for nominal operation. Backup navigation …

High Accuracy Attitude Determination And Control Of The Diva Mission, Matthias Wiegand, Stephan Theil, Thomas Diedrich, Oliver Matthews Sep 1998

High Accuracy Attitude Determination And Control Of The Diva Mission, Matthias Wiegand, Stephan Theil, Thomas Diedrich, Oliver Matthews

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellite missions for scientific purpose gained more and more importance during the last years in Germany. There are several missions inorbit or scheduled for launch in the near future like GFZ (1995), Equator-S (inorbit, launch Dec 1997), ABRIXAS (launch April 1999) and other missions are on the horizon. One of these highly ambitious projects is the small astrometry satellite DIVA (German Interferometer for Multichannel Photometry and Astrometry). DIVA will be the successor of the HIPPARCOS satellite and a pathfinder to much larger missions like GAIA (Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics), FAME (Fizeau Astrometric Mapping Explorer) and SIM (Space Interferometry …

The Catsat Attitude Control System, Chris Whitford, David Forrest Sep 1998

The Catsat Attitude Control System, Chris Whitford, David Forrest

Small Satellite Conference

CATSAT is a small 3-axis stabilised satellite in the STEDI program, to be launched in 1999. This paper describes the development of the attitude control system, with emphasis on the control laws. The 2 primary modes are the safe-hold and science modes. The safe-hold mode uses a momentum wheel, magnetometers and torque coils, with the "B-dot" algorithm. The science mode also uses momentum bias and torque coils, with Sun sensors and horizon sensors, to maintain 3-axis control. The use of reaction wheel control is also being studied. The expected performance is demonstrated by simulations.

Use Of Optimization Methods In Small Satellite Systems Analysis, Ellen Riddle Sep 1998

Use Of Optimization Methods In Small Satellite Systems Analysis, Ellen Riddle

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes the mathematical foundation and algorithmic development of a multidisciplinary design optimization technique to provide spacecraft performance optimization in a constrained environment. The method introduced, referred to here as the Early Small Satellite System Analysis Method (ESSAM), incorporates the use optimization algorithms to provide insight into the effect individual technologies have on performance and cost parameters even when the system is at a low definition of design. This high-fidelity knowledge brought to the early stages of the design process allow the spacecraft concept architecture, technology choices, and performance requirements to be adjusted to meet an overall estimated cost …

The Software Design For The Wide-Field Infrared Explorer Attitude Control System, Kenneth Barnes, Charles Melhorn, Tom Phillips Sep 1998

The Software Design For The Wide-Field Infrared Explorer Attitude Control System, Kenneth Barnes, Charles Melhorn, Tom Phillips

Small Satellite Conference

The Wide-Field Infrared Explorer (WIRE), currently scheduled for launch in September 1998, is the fifth spacecraft in NASA's Small Explorer (SMEX) series. WIRE's mission is to perform a four month survey of galaxies with unusually high star formation rates ("starburst galaxies"). It is a momentum-biased three-axis stabilized stellar pointer which provides high-accuracy pointing and autonomous acquisition for eight to ten targets per orbit. Much of the design is based on previous SMEX missions, WIRE's short mission life and limited cryogen supply impose strict new Sun and Earth avoidance requirements which protect the instrument and preserve cryogen. This paper presents the …

Feasibility Considerations For High Temperature Superconducting Transponders In Communication Satellites, Nicholas Seet Sep 1998

Feasibility Considerations For High Temperature Superconducting Transponders In Communication Satellites, Nicholas Seet

Small Satellite Conference

This paper provides a comprehensive, background-rich framework around which a fully developed study of the use of superconducting transponders can be generated for a specific communication satellite. The approach divides results into two categories: signal benefits, and physical constraints. Each is realized in terms of metrics and methods warranted by the current state of superconductor technology. The paper describes methods by which signal performance of superconducting transponder components may be approximated; also methods of evaluating heat generated by such a system; and finally, the selection of an appropriate cryogenic cooling system.

Symmetry And Tiling Groups For Genus 4 And 5, C. Ryan Vinroot Sep 1998

Symmetry And Tiling Groups For Genus 4 And 5, C. Ryan Vinroot

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

All symmetry groups for surfaces of genus 2 and 3 are known. In this paper, we classify symmetry groups and tiling groups with three branch points for surfaces of genus 4 and 5. Also, a class of symmetry groups that are not tiling groups is presented, as well as a class of odd order non-abelian tiling groups.
