Calibrated Probabilistic Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts Based On The Mrf Ensemble, Frederick Anthony Eckel
Calibrated Probabilistic Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts Based On The Mrf Ensemble, Frederick Anthony Eckel
Theses and Dissertations
Probabilistic quantitative precipitation forecasts (PQPF) based on the medium range forecast (MRF) ensemble are currently in operational use below their full potential quality (i.e., accuracy and reliability). This unfulfilled potential is due to the MRF ensemble being adversely affected by systematic errors which arise from an imperfect model and less than ideal ensemble initial perturbations. This thesis sought to construct a calibration to account for these systematic errors and thus produce higher quality PQPF. Systematic errors were explored with the use of the verification rank histogram, which tracks the performance of the ensemble. The information in these histograms was then …

Studies Of Metallic Multilayer Structures, Optical Properties, And Oxidation Using In Situ Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, Xiang Gao, Jeff Hale, Scott Heckens, John A. Woollam
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) has been successfully used to accurately measure sputter deposition rates and optical constants of un-oxidized metal layers and to control the growth of magnetic multilayers. The structures include [Co/Cu] n , [Co/Au] n , [Co/Ni] n , [Co/Pd] n and [Co/Pd/ Au] n . Layer thickness precision is better than ±0.05 nm for layer thicknesses in the range of 0.2 nm to 10 nm. Closed-loop feedback control of layer thickness is also demonstrated. Good consistency was obtained by comparing the in situ SE results to x-ray diffraction measurements. Dynamic oxidation studies of [Co/Au] n and …

Understanding The Cool Da White Dwarf Pulsator, G29-38, Scot J. Kleinman, Matt A. Wood
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
The white dwarfs are promising laboratories for the study of cosmochronology and stellar evolution. Through observations of the pulsating white dwarfs, we can measure their internal structures and compositions, critical to understanding post-main-sequence evolution, along with their cooling rates, which will allow us to calibrate their ages directly. The most important set of white dwarf variables to measure are the oldest of the pulsators, the cool DA variables (DAVs), which have not been explored previously through asteroseismology due to their complexity and instability. Through a time-series photometry data set spanning 10 yr, we explore the pulsation spectrum of the cool …

Observation of g-rnode pulsations in the variable pre-white dwarf (GW Virginis) stars provides a unique means to probe their interiors and to study the late stages of stellar evolution. Multisite campaigns have in several cases proved highly successful in decoding pre-white dwarf light curves. Three previous attempts to untangle the pulsation spectrum of the coolest GW Virginis star, PG 0122+200, confirmed the existence of multiple g-modes but left the fundamental period spacing and therefore the star's mass and luminosity in doubt. We present an analysis based on new observations of PG 0122+200 obtained during a Whole Earth Telescope (WET) campaign …
Lempel Ziv Welch Data Compression Using Associative Processing As An Enabling Technology For Real Time Application, Manish Narang
Lempel Ziv Welch Data Compression Using Associative Processing As An Enabling Technology For Real Time Application, Manish Narang
Theses
Data compression is a term that refers to the reduction of data representation requirements either in storage and/or in transmission. A commonly used algorithm for compression is the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) method proposed by Terry A. Welch[l]. LZW is an adaptive, dictionary based, lossless algorithm. This provides for a general compression mechanism that is applicable to a broad range of inputs. Furthermore, the lossless nature of LZW implies that it is a reversible process which results in the original file/message being fully recoverable from compression. A variant of this algorithm is currently the foundation of the UNIX "compress" program. Additionally, LZW …

Measurement Of Triple Gauge-Boson Couplings At 172 Gev, Barate, R.; Et Al, M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The triple gauge-boson couplings, αWΦ, αW and αBΦ, have been measured using 34 semileptonically and 54 hadronically decaying W+W− candidate events. The events were selected in the data recorded during 1996 with the ALEPH detector at 172 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.65 pb−1. The triple gauge-boson couplings have been measured using optimal observables constructed from kinematic information of W+W− events. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

We present a new method for representation and (lossy) compression of bitonal document images. The technique extracts a skeletal medial axis from each object using a true Euclidean distance map of the image and then finds piecewise linear breakpoints in the skeleton to create a breakpoint skeletal representation, bps, (Fig. 1). The bps is encoded for each object as a set of triples {, <Δx2,Δy2,Δr2>, . . . <Δxn,Δyn,Δrn>} where contains the coordinate and distance (radius, r1) of the initial breakpoint from the closest point on the perimeter of the object and <Δxi,Δyi,Δri> represents the difference in location and radius between …δxi,δyi,δri>δxn,δyn,δrn>δx2,δy2,δr2>

Differing with the scanning microelectrode techniques, which scan microelctrode closely to the interface of electrode/electrolyte and make electrochemical imaging in a lateral spatial resolution, the technique of microelectrode with a micron diameter is of very high time-resolution and ratio of signal/noise in electrochemical measurements. The microelectrode technique allows double-layer capacitance and background current for a microelectrode to be drastically reduced due to the exposed area of a microelectrode is usually 6~8 orders of magnetite lower than that of a conventional electrode with large-scale exposed area. Microelectrode was recently developed as a new powerful electrochemical technique and widely used in the …

Gold Electrodeposition On Microelectrodes, Lihua Xiong, Caihui Shi, Xiaoqin Li, Bingwei Mao
Journal of Electrochemistry
The initial stage electrodeposition behaviors of gold onto glassy carbon and platinum microelectrodes are studied in an acid solution containing AuCl3 using cyclic voltammetry and potential step techniques. The results suggest that gold nucleation on microelectrodes requires a higher driving force with high probability. Within the range of the microelectrode dimension that have been used in the present work, large amount of gold nucleus could be formed at short time scale at overpotentials higher than a threshole value. The It curves from the platinum microelectrode are in consistence with the continuous nucleation model. It has been found that …

A method which is a combination of the Four Point Bend in mechanics with Acoustic Emission was used to measure the adhensive strength of electroless Ni-P deposits to substrates. Experimental results obtained by this method was in accordance with calculation by the model of complex plate. It was found that the pattens of the Acoustic Emission curves were related to the appearance of Ni-P deposit failure: the convex deposit failure was in correspondance with adhensive failure of a deposit to a substerte and the borizontal crackles with cohensive failure of a deposit.

The Time Dependent Red Shift Phenomenon Of Visible Electroluminescence Of Porous Silicon, Rongqiu Wang, Jingjian Li, Shengmin Cai, Zhongfan Liu
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electroluminescence (EL) of n-type porous silicon (PS) in a persulphate solution under cathodic polarization was studied. A significant red shift in the luminescence spectra with the increase of polarization time, as well as a blue shift with the increase of cathodic polarization, have been found. FTIR, Micro-Raman, AFM and photoelectrochemical techniques have been used to investigate the structure of PS before and after the electroluminescence emission. All these results show that the surface of PS has been oxidized by the persulphate during the EL emission, and accompanied by the stripping of small silicon nanocrystallite, which leades to the red …

Spectroscopic Investigation Of Ion Transport Mechanisms In Polyacrylonitrile Based Electrolytes, Zhaoxiang Wang, Biying Huang, Rongjian Xue, Xuejie Huang, Liquan Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Raman, IR, X-ray photoelectron (XPS), and NMR spectra of components in polyacrylonitrile based electrolytes have been studied. It is found that there are strong interactions among the components though different systems show different interaction characteristics. A concept of competition is proposed between the polymer matrix and the plasticizer on associating with the Li+ ions. By analyzing the important functions of the plasticizer, a possible mechanism of the ions transport in the polymer electrolyte is suggested.

At 9:30 am, on Thursday, February 1, 1973, I was sitting in the Trianon Ballroom in the Hilton Hotel in New York City listening to a talk by John W. Renner on "Intellectual Development and Science Teaching", based on the work of Jean Piaget (Renner, 1972). During his discussion of how the world looked to a science student using concrete reasoning I had an "ah-ha" experience. When I got back to the UNL campus, I found out that Renner's talk was based on his earlier paper in the American Journal of Physics, "Are Colleges Concerned With Intellectual Development?"
