Decision Making Based On Satellite Images: Optimal Fuzzy Clustering Approach, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Scott A. Starks, Yeung Yam Mar 1998

Decision Making Based On Satellite Images: Optimal Fuzzy Clustering Approach, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Scott A. Starks, Yeung Yam

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life decision-making situations, in particular, in processing satellite images, we have an enormous amount of information to process. To speed up the information processing, it is reasonable to first classify the situations into a few meaningful classes (clusters), find the best decision for each class, and then, for each new situation, to apply the decision which is the best for the corresponding class. One of the most efficiently clustering methodologies is fuzzy clustering, which is based on the use of fuzzy logic. Usually, heuristic clusterings are used, i.e., methods which are selected based on their empirical efficiency …

Towards The Use Of Aesthetics In Decision Making: Kolmogorov Complexity Formalizes Birkhoff's Idea, Misha Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Yeung Yam Mar 1998

Towards The Use Of Aesthetics In Decision Making: Kolmogorov Complexity Formalizes Birkhoff's Idea, Misha Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Yeung Yam

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Decision making is traditionally based on utilitarian criteria such as cost, efficiency, time, etc. These criteria are reasonably easy to formalize; hence, for such criteria, we can select the best decision by solving the corresponding well-defined optimization problem. In many engineering projects, however, e.g., in designing cars, building, airplanes, etc., an important additional criterion which needs to be satisfied is that the designed object should be good looking. This additional criterion is difficult to formalize and, because of that, it is rarely taken into consideration in formal decision making. In the 1930s, the famous mathematician G. D. Birkhoff has proposed …

Onset Of Superconductivity In Decreasing Fields For General Domains, Andrew J. Bernoff, Peter Sternberg Mar 1998

Onset Of Superconductivity In Decreasing Fields For General Domains, Andrew J. Bernoff, Peter Sternberg

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Ginzburg–Landau theory has provided an effective method for understanding the onset of superconductivity in the presence of an external magnetic field. In this paper we examine the instability of the normal state to superconductivity with decreasing magnetic field for a closed smooth cylindrical region of arbitrary cross-section subject to a vertical magnetic field. We examine the problem asymptotically in the boundary layer limit (i.e., when the Ginzburg–Landau parameter, k, is large). We demonstrate that instability first occurs in a region exponentially localized near the point of maximum curvature on the boundary. The transition occurs at a value of the …

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Thunder Combat Simulation Model To Command And Control Inputs Accomplished In A Parallel Environment, David A. Davies

Theses and Dissertations

This research had two objectives. The first was to develop a methodology to demonstrate the parallel processing capability provided by Air Force's Aeronautical System's Command (ASC) Major Shared Resource Center (MSRC) and apply that methodology to the SIMAF Proof of Concept project. Secondly, AFSAA/SAAB requested a sensitivity analysis of THUNDER to the modeled command and control (C2) inputs. The power of parallelization can not be overemphasized. The data collection phase of this thesis was accomplished at the MSRC using a script developed to automate the processing of an experimental design, providing the analyst with a launch and leave capability. On …

Joint Wavelet Transform Correlation With Separated Target And Reference Planes, Boon Yi Soon, Mohammad A. Karim, Russell C. Hardie, Mohammad S. Alam

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In recent years, we realize the usefulness of feature extraction for optical correlator and hereby, we investigate the capability of Laplace operator in feature extraction of multiple targets. The first-order terms and the false alarm terms in the correlation output would be removed using electronic power spectrum subtraction technique. Most importantly, the entire magneto-optic SLM is completely utilized for displaying only targets in the input scene. A new cost efficient hardware implementation is proposed and aforementioned result of the proposed system is evaluated through computer simulation.

Purpose: Treatment of vascular lesions of the high cervical internal carotid artery (zone III) resulting from penetrating trauma, blunt trauma, aneurysms, and atherosclerosis pose a challenge for vascular surgeons due to bony interference's of the mandibular ramus and mastoid process. Although many techniques have been described, two methods, have been identified as effective and associated with low morbidity. The purpose of this study is to compare these two methods, mandibular distraction and vertical ramus osteotomy, for their effectiveness at increasing access to the cranial base and distal internal carotid artery.

Materials and Methods: Five fresh frozen cadavers were utilized …

Numerical Analysis Of Bose-Einstein Condensation In A Three-Dimensional Harmonic Oscillator Potential, Martin K. Ligare Mar 1998

Numerical Analysis Of Bose-Einstein Condensation In A Three-Dimensional Harmonic Oscillator Potential, Martin K. Ligare

Faculty Journal Articles

Bose–Einstein condensation is the anomalous accumulation of particles in the ground state of a system of bosons, when compared with the population in a system of particles obeying classical statistics. I use undergraduate-level statistical mechanics and a symbolic algebra computer program to study the occupation numbers of the energy levels of a finite number of noninteracting particles confined in a three-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential. I also calculate the heat capacity of the gas. The harmonic oscillator potential simplifies the calculations and approximates the conditions of the recent experiments achieving Bose–Einstein condensation in laser-cooled alkali vapors.

"Intensional Contexts" And The Rule That Statutes Should Be Interpreted As Consistent With International Law, John M. Rogers Mar 1998

"Intensional Contexts" And The Rule That Statutes Should Be Interpreted As Consistent With International Law, John M. Rogers

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Striving for consistency—for consistency, that is, properly understood—must characterize legal reasoning in order for the reasoning to deserve to be called "legal." It may conceivably be "good" or "moral" for identically situated persons to be treated differently by institutions with power, but doing so can hardly be called "legal." Very careful attention must be given, of course, to what is meant by "identically situated," as no two different persons can be 100% identically situated. Their names, for instance, are different. By identical, we must mean no relevant distinction, or no distinction that serves a purpose that we can articulate and …

Single-Head Spin Modes In Frontal Polymerization, Victor M. Ilyashenko, John A. Pojman Mar 1998

Single-Head Spin Modes In Frontal Polymerization, Victor M. Ilyashenko, John A. Pojman

Faculty Publications

The single-head spin mode is the first two-dimensional pattern of self-propagating thermal reaction fronts observed after the planar front loses stability. A "hot spot" is observed to propagate around the periphery of the front. The dynamics of the single-head frontal polymerization regime were studied experimentally, and two novel results were found. The "hot spot" was measured and found to be superadiabatic. The relationship between the rotational velocity and the propagating velocity was found. Experimental data were also compared with the theoretical results based on the linear stability analysis and found to be in a reasonable agreement. (C) 1998 American institute …

The Catholic Elementary School Curriculum: Elements Of Coherence, Merylann “Mimi” J Schuttloffel Mar 1998

The Catholic Elementary School Curriculum: Elements Of Coherence, Merylann “Mimi” J Schuttloffel

Journal of Catholic Education

This study investigates those characteristics of the written curricula for selected diocesan elementary schools that distinguish the curricula as uniquely Catholic. Findings from the study indicate the presence of three values that serve as common themes: 1) acquiring Catholic faith knowledge; 2) engaging in Catholic faith practices; and 3) recognizing from a holistic perspective the multiple needs of students. The different approaches or “looks” of the curricula examined represent a variety of curriculum development approaches on a continuum of centralization/decentralization.

Diffusivities Of N-Alkanes In Silicalite By Steady-State Single-Crystal Membrane Technique, Orhan Talu, Matthew S. Sun, Dhananjai B. Shah Mar 1998

Diffusivities Of N-Alkanes In Silicalite By Steady-State Single-Crystal Membrane Technique, Orhan Talu, Matthew S. Sun, Dhananjai B. Shah

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A novel experimental technique that measures the diffusive flux through a single-crystal membrane (SCM) was developed and tested. Unlike all other macroscopic techniques that depend on a transient response, SCM is used under steady-state conditions, which results in a wide range of applicability from 10−2 to 10−11 cm2/s. Phenomenological equations for the steady-state data analysis were developed. The variation of driving force over the diffusion path is included in the model. As required by thermodynamics, the micropore concentration is given as a function of surface-excess amount adsorbed and gas density. The membrane configuration measures diffusivity in …

Field Solutions For Bidirectional High-Gain Laser Amplifiers And Oscillators, Lee W. Casperson, Mohammad Azadeh Mar 1998

Field Solutions For Bidirectional High-Gain Laser Amplifiers And Oscillators, Lee W. Casperson, Mohammad Azadeh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

General analytical solutions are obtained for the amplitude, phase, and intensity of the electromagnetic waves in bidirectional homogeneously broadened high-gain laser amplifiers and oscillators. These solutions are important as increasingly high-gain lasers are being employed in practical systems. Expressions are derived relating the output power to the input, including the effects of arbitrary mirror reflectivities and frequency detunings from the line center. For negligible reflectivities, these regenerative amplifier results reduce to earlier expressions for single-pass high-gain amplifiers. Multivalued outputs also occur, and in the limit of low gain per pass the results are consistent with earlier studies of single-frequency laser …

Improved Mathematical Modeling For Gps Based Navigation, Salvatore Nardi Mar 1998

Improved Mathematical Modeling For Gps Based Navigation, Salvatore Nardi

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is concerned with the development of new closed form GPS position determination algorithms that work in the presence of pseudorange measurement noise. The mathematical derivation of two closed form algorithms, based on stochastic modeling and estimation techniques, is presented. The algorithms provide an estimate of the GPS solution parameters (viz., the user position and the user clock bias) as well as the estimation error covariance. The experimental results are analyzed by comparison to the baseline results from the conventional Iterative Least Squares (ILS) algorithm. In typical GPS scenarios, the closed form algorithms are extremely sensitive to noise, making …

Optimizing The Efficiency Of A Multi-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor: An Application Of Stage-Wise Optimization, Shawn A. Miller Mar 1998

Optimizing The Efficiency Of A Multi-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor: An Application Of Stage-Wise Optimization, Shawn A. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

The development of jet engines has become an integral part of maintaining air superiority. In order to achieve the most advanced engine, research has turned to traditional optimization methods to aid in creating new engine designs. To develop simplified mathematical models representative of the engine, the engine can be separated into its components. A jet engine has three major elements, the compressor, combustion chamber and turbine. This research attempts to make an initial analysis of a two stage compressor to determine values of blade angles and spacing to chord ratios for both stages that produce the highest possible efficiency for …

An Advanced Visualization Method For An Operations Research Analysis, Steven C. Oimoen Mar 1998

An Advanced Visualization Method For An Operations Research Analysis, Steven C. Oimoen

Theses and Dissertations

Visualizing multidimensional data using only two dimensions and conventional visualization techniques limits the understanding of the data set. Underlying structures or patterns within the data can easily go unnoticed. In order to gain additional insight into an analysis, incorporation of visualization and multidimensional graphics into the analysis results should be accomplished. The results must ensure that the information portrayed is not misleading or misunderstood. The integrity of the data must be preserved throughout the transformation. The primary objective of this research effort is to identify techniques to visualize multidimensional data and then develop a software tool to display the multidimensional …

A Comparison Of Advect Cloud Model And Fifth-Generation Mesoscale Model Total Fractional Cloud Forecasts, Brian D. Pukall Mar 1998

A Comparison Of Advect Cloud Model And Fifth-Generation Mesoscale Model Total Fractional Cloud Forecasts, Brian D. Pukall

Theses and Dissertations

Total fractional cloudiness (FC) forecasts from the advect cloud (ADVCLD) model and total FC forecasts diagnosed from the relative humidity and total cloud condensate (snow, ice, rain water, and cloud water) fields from the fifth generation mesoscale model (MM5) were statistically and subjectively compared to determine which model produced the better total FC forecasts from August through November 1997 for a forecast window centered on Bosnia. The real time nephanalysis (RTNFPH) model was used to represent the true state of the atmosphere. ADVCLD and MM5 forecasts were also compared against a persistence forecast to provide a minimal skill baseline. The …
