Quantitative And Stereoisomeric Determination Of Light Biomarkers In Crude Oil And Coal Samples, Alain Berthod, Xiande Wang, Kyung H. Gahm, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Indans and tetralins are considered biological markers (biomarkers). These C9-C11 hydrocarbons are present in small amounts in organic geological samples. Methyl substituted indans or tetralins may possess a stereogenic center (carbon). Thus they can exist as enantiomers and, in the case of disubstituted enties, also as diastereoisomers. The concentrations of 1-methylindan, 1,3-dimethylindan, 1-methyltetralin, and 2-methyltetralin were determined in 16 crude oil samples of different sources and in 14 coal samples of different sources and ranks. Deuterated homologues were synthesized as standards to spike the samples and to assure accurate quantitative analysis. A procedure using HPLC fractionation followed by GC/MS analysis …

Elazar's Political Culture: Is It Applicable Today?, Mark M. Springer May 1998

Elazar's Political Culture: Is It Applicable Today?, Mark M. Springer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the utility of Daniel J. Elazar’s political culture, developed in 1%6. Dr. Ira Sharkansky conceptualized Elazar’s political culture in 1969 by applying measures pertaining to participation; size and perquisites of bureaucracy; and scope, magnitude, costs, and innovative character of government programs. He used simple correlation, Pearson’s r, to determine whether political culture had any influence on the 23 dependent variables that he arranged under the three different measures. Then, he tested for partial correlation, using per capita personal income and the percentage of the population living in areas considered “urban” as controlling variables. Finally, he tested the …

Paper Session Iii-D - The Collaborative Ukrainian Experiment, Thomas W. Dreschel, Paul H. Williams, Volodimir I. Nazarenko, Peter V. Chetirkin

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Collaborative Ukrainian Experiment (CUE) flew aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia on Mission STS-87. The educational component, entitled “Teachers and Students Investigating Plants in Space” (TSIPS), involved students and teachers in the U.S. and Ukraine performing ground controls for the “Brassica rapa-Seed Terminal growth In Chamber” (B-STIC) experiment.
Teachers in both countries were trained in the experimental protocols for culturing and pollinating Brassica rapa plants in simulated flight hardware. Teachers and students in the two countries have been exchanging letters which has resulted in a rich exchange of culture and science.
For the mission, an Ukrainian Payload Specialist (PS) performed …

Paper Session Iii-D - Trials, Transformations, And Triumphs: The Space Program's Past, Present, And Future Impact On Society, Melissa Kullik

Space Congress® Proceedings

Human nature is governed by the need to explore, discover, and surpass. The space program — humanityÕs greatest exploration — has given us unimagined benefits technologically, scientifically, and theoretically, both in terms of education as well as practical application. Historically, it can be shown that the study of space has had an impact on many fields such as civilian and military engineering, education, astronomy, and international politics, all of which have improved the quality of life. Mankind is now poised on the brink of a new discovery, a new revolution in thought and theory, which could bring myriads of benefits …

A Mentor Program Study At The Pennsauken Campus Of Camden County Technical Schools, Fredrica Macdonough Apr 1998

A Mentor Program Study At The Pennsauken Campus Of Camden County Technical Schools, Fredrica Macdonough

Theses and Dissertations

Mentoring many at-risk students who benefit from contact with teachers and other faculty members, the ten-year-old program at the Pennsauken Campus of Camden County Technical school needed change and improvement.

The study identified students who had ability but did not succeed in school because of discipline, attendance, or academic reasons.

Previously only freshmen were initially included in the program, but this study included upper class students in need of mentoring and encouraged additional mentors to participate.

Mentors and students were paired and met either daily or twice monthly. Each month the intern collected brief reports of the meetings and met …

An Internship Experience In Educational Leadership At The Camden County Technical Schools, Pennsauken Campus, Rosann Hofstrom Kasuba

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the program implemented at our school to prepare students to take the reading section of the HSPT11, the state graduation test of New Jersey. Evaluation of the program promoted enhanced instructional practices to improve student achievement.

The methodology for my research relied on the theoretical framework of educational policy analysis, the interpretive paradigm of teacher cognition, and the interview as a tool for inquiry. Extended interviews of four teachers who taught at each level were conducted to access teacher cognition. The classes of these four teachers were designed to prepare students for …

Effects Of Oxygen Variation On The Ecology Of Devil's Hole, Death Valley National Park, Norma J. Azad Apr 1998

Effects Of Oxygen Variation On The Ecology Of Devil's Hole, Death Valley National Park, Norma J. Azad

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The inability to rear Devil's Hole pupfish, Cyprinodon diabolis Wales, in captivity, when captive propagation has been successful with other species of pupfish, led to the examination of environmental factors which are unique to Devil's Hole. It has been suggested that C. diabolis regularly experience developmental arrest due to hypoxic conditions. This arrest may be reversible in areas of the shallow shelf during periods of photosynthetic activity. Oxygen measurements over the shallow shelf reveal a gradient of oxygen variation with the greatest diel variability over the inner portion of the shelf diminishing to nearly imperceptible diel variation toward the outer …

An Internship Experience In Educational Leadership At Sterling High School District, Cleve W. Bryan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of teacher attitudes on the integration of educational technologies into the curriculum at Sterling High School as a means to assess the effectiveness of the district's technology plan.

A descriptive research method was used in the study that included a school-wide technology survey of teachers and follow-up interviews with 20% of the teaching staff. The technology survey instrument and interview questions were developed by the researcher and reviewed by the technology committee of Sterling High School. Percentages of responses were used as the primary method of data analysis along with …

Paper Session Ii-D - Defining Partnership Needs For Florida's Aviation/ Aerospace Industry And The State Educational System, Tim Kotnour, Lesley Cheema Apr 1998

Paper Session Ii-D - Defining Partnership Needs For Florida's Aviation/ Aerospace Industry And The State Educational System, Tim Kotnour, Lesley Cheema

Space Congress® Proceedings

The contribution of this paper is a description of a process to determine partnership needs between FloridaÕs aviation/aerospace industry and university and community college educational system. This process was developed to produce an educational success plan which address two questions: How can the stateÕs education system bring the most value to the aviation/aerospace industry? and How can the aviation/aerospace industry bring the most value to the stateÕs education system? To answer these questions we first define the cyclic nature of the benefits from an industry-education partnership. Second, we define three partnership components: education, research, and technical assistance. Third, a research …

Paper Session Ii-D - The Space Life Sciences Training Program, Preparing For Tomorrow Today, Shannon Potter

Space Congress® Proceedings

The goal of NASA’s Space Life Sciences Training Program (SLSTP) is to attract the country’s brightest undergraduate students, and expose them to exciting research and career opportunities available in Space Life Science disciplines. A primary objective of the program is to influence the career paths of the students early in their education. SLSTP has been successfully meeting that objective since its inception in 1985. Eighty-five percent of the students in the SLSTP Class of ‘97 reported that the program has influenced their choice of career paths. SLSTP is sponsored by NASA Headquarters’ Life Sciences Division (Code UL) and Office of …
