Imagesetter Output Resolution In Newspaper Color Image Reproduction, Sabine Süsstrunk May 1998

Imagesetter Output Resolution In Newspaper Color Image Reproduction, Sabine Süsstrunk

Theses

The use of color in newspaper printing has significantly increased over the last few years. To compete with other news media, advertising as well as editorial design had to become more visually attractive, using more color graphics and images. The concurrent development of integrated desktop pre-press systems facilitated the integration of color, having less cost associated with new technology purchases than the traditional high end systems. The purpose of the thesis is to compare different output resolutions of an imagesetter and to find the minimal output resolution necessary for acceptable quality in newspaper color image reproduction. The speed of an …

An Analysis Of Available Unsharp Masking Techniques Used With Mid-Range Pmt/Drum Scanners, Eric Neumann May 1998

An Analysis Of Available Unsharp Masking Techniques Used With Mid-Range Pmt/Drum Scanners, Eric Neumann

Theses

Unsharp masking (USM), also known as detail enhancement, is a process of combining an unsharp representation of an original image with the original image to obtain the effect of greater detail. USM can be performed photomechanically with additional exposures, electronically with the color scanner, and digitally with the aid of a post-processing program. Electronic methods of USM per formed during the scanning process offer productivity benefits over both the photomechanical and post-processing methods. Mid-range PMT/drum scanners offer several methods of unsharp masking from which to choose. These meth ods, optical USM, digital USM, and hybrid USM each have advantages and …

A Colorimetric Performance Comparison Of Gray Component Replacement Algorithms, Thomas Orino May 1998

A Colorimetric Performance Comparison Of Gray Component Replacement Algorithms, Thomas Orino

Theses

An experiment was performed to compare the effect of gray component replacement on color separations created with the Hell 399ER scanner software compared to two desktop algorithms. Three different GCR methods were tested; the scanner method where the separations were performed and films output on a mid 1980's model Hell 399ER laser scanner using Hell's first generation GCR algorithm and two types of desktop methods where the scans were done in RGB, color separated on the desktop, and films generated on an Agfa Selectset 5000 imagesetter. The two desktop methods used were RIT Research Corporation's RGB-CMYK transform and Adobe Photoshop …

Establishment Of A Nighthawk Migration Monitoring Program, Jeri Paige Guilliams May 1998

Establishment Of A Nighthawk Migration Monitoring Program, Jeri Paige Guilliams

Theses & Honors Papers

The Nighthawk Migration Monitoring Program was initiated in 1997 to study the Common Nighthawk, Chordeiles minor. Modeled after the Hawk Migration Association of North America's hawkwatching methodology, the program enlisted volunteers to record time of day for peak flight, time of season for peak flight, weather conditions affecting migration, and other data. Volunteers were enlisted by establishment of a web page and e-mail address, preparation and circulation of a brochure, and through mail.

Individual chapters of the Virginia Society of Ornithology and others expressing interest were sent a letter, brochure, a Nighthawk Count Report Form, and an instruction sheet for …

Rights & Responsibilities: My Years At Bank Street, John H. Niemeyer

Books

"John H. Niemeyer served as president of Bank Street College of Education from 1955 through 1973. Attached are two sample chapters from a work in progress derived from conversations between John Niemeyer and Dick Greenspan. They discussed Bank Street's work during the tumultuous years of the 1950s and 1960s when civil rights and school integration were changing the face of American education." -- Title page.

Amphibians And Reptiles [Of The Sand Hills], Patricia W. Freeman May 1998

Amphibians And Reptiles [Of The Sand Hills], Patricia W. Freeman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Of the 60 species of amphibians and reptiles presently known from Nebraska, 27 are found in the Sand Hills and one more is marginal to the east. Fourteen species of the 60 are essentially state wide in distribution, including the Sand Hills, and eight species of reptiles are strongly influenced by the Sand Hills (Lynch, 1985). Of 12 species that occur widely over the moister eastern part of the state, only four extend into the Sand Hills, and one occurs only under the wet conditions along the rivers of the eastern Sand Hills.

Amphibians: Tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum); …

The Process Of Career Decision-Making In Women: The Decision To Obtain A Nontraditional Occupation, Paula Houston May 1998

The Process Of Career Decision-Making In Women: The Decision To Obtain A Nontraditional Occupation, Paula Houston

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis examines the differences of experiences in working-class and middleclass women's lives due to childhood gender-role socialization and current situations in their lives. The purpose of the study is to examine how past and present experiences influenced four groups of women in making career decisions: 1) owners of nontraditional (male-type) businesses, 2) owners of traditional (female-type) businesses, 3) non-owners of nontraditional (male-type) businesses, and 4) non-owners of traditional (female-type) businesses. Both social and cognitive processes were examined for clues. In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of twenty women to examine their Childhood and current experiences of gender socialization. …

A Comparison Of Deterministic And Stochastic Population Models, Clarissa Smith May 1998

A Comparison Of Deterministic And Stochastic Population Models, Clarissa Smith

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis, the author considers the exponential and the predator-prey population models. A comparison of the deterministic and stochastic versions of each is made. The author shows that on average a stochastic model is precisely its corresponding deterministic model. The first model considered is the exponential model. A solution is provided for both the deterministic and the stochastic versions. A predator-prey model is also analyzed. A solution of the stochastic predator-prey model is shown to be intractable. Analysis of this model is performed through numerical simulation.
