Educators' Knowledge And Attitude Regarding Nj's Core Curriculum Content Standards, Amy H. Crossley May 1998

Educators' Knowledge And Attitude Regarding Nj's Core Curriculum Content Standards, Amy H. Crossley

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the knowledge of teachers regarding NJ's Core Curriculum Content Standards and their attitudes towards those standards. A survey was distributed and collected from 35 participants. Items on the survey were factored into three categories. These categories described how well-informed educators were regarding NJ's CCCS, their feelings towards the standards and how well-prepared they as educators felt they were. Results reveal that educators have "some" knowledge regarding NJ's CCCS, however, that knowledge-base must be broadened. Results also showed that the majority of educators have either a "positive" attitude or an "indifferent" attitude towards implementing NJ's CCCS and that …

Testing Modified Newtonian Dynamics With Low Surface Brightness Galaxies: Rotation Curve Fits, Stacy S. Mcgaugh May 1998

Testing Modified Newtonian Dynamics With Low Surface Brightness Galaxies: Rotation Curve Fits, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

We present modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) fits to 15 rotation curves of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. Good fits are readily found, although for a few galaxies minor adjustments to the inclination are needed. Reasonable values for the stellar mass-to-light ratios are found, as well as an approximately constant value for the total (gas and stars) mass-to-light ratio. We show that the LSB galaxies investigated here lie on the one, unique Tully-Fisher relation, as predicted by MOND. The scatter on the Tully-Fisher relation can be completely explained by the observed scatter in the total mass-to-light ratio. We address the question …

Process Improvement For The Eastman Kodak Automated Paint Line Using Design Of Experiments, Suzanne Traynor May 1998

Process Improvement For The Eastman Kodak Automated Paint Line Using Design Of Experiments, Suzanne Traynor

Theses

Design of experiments (DOE) is a systematic approach used to improve quality, increase profits, and decrease defects in a process in a cost effective and efficient manner. A DOE is important for getting a better understanding of the process and a better part to the customer. A DOE has been applied toward improving the electrodeposition process in Eastman Kodak's automated paint line (APL). A two level factorial model has been used as a screening design to help identify the important factors. The design was essentially broken up into sixteen small designs to account for different process parameters and different responses. …

Scotopic Sensitivity/Irlen Syndrome And The Adult Graduate Student, Patricia Haas Berry May 1998

Scotopic Sensitivity/Irlen Syndrome And The Adult Graduate Student, Patricia Haas Berry

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to establish the prevalence of SS/Irlen Syndrome in adult graduate students. SS/Irlen Syndrome is a perceptual dysfunction that causes 14 to 16 percent of the general population physical discomfort such as headache, eye strain and blurry vision and academic difficulties such as poor background accommodations and print resolution resulting in inefficient reading (Irlen, 1997).

The 16 subjects were adult graduate students in a university program. Data collection was achieved through the utilization of questionnaires. The first questionnaire, the Irlen Observation Form, surveyed the subjects for characteristics of SS/Irlen Syndrome. The second questionnaire, Parts A …

Pressure Ionization And Line Merging In Strongly Coupled Plasmas Produced By 100-Fs Laser Pulses, M. Nantel, G. Ma, S. Gu, C.Y. Côté, J. Itatani, Donald Umstadter May 1998

Pressure Ionization And Line Merging In Strongly Coupled Plasmas Produced By 100-Fs Laser Pulses, M. Nantel, G. Ma, S. Gu, C.Y. Côté, J. Itatani, Donald Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

Time- and space-resolved extreme ultraviolet spectra of carbon plasmas, created with 100-fs laser pulses, are obtained with the novel technique of picosecond jitter-free streak-camera averaging. Spectroscopic diagnostics indicate electron densities and temperatures evolving from 1023 to 1021 cm-3 and 80 to 50 eV, respectively, implying less than one particle in a Debye sphere at early times. The emission reveals conditions of extreme pressure ionization and line merging. Comparisons of the experimental spectra with numerical simulations validate the use of the Inglis-Teller limit for line merging, and confirm that pressure ionization models based on the Debye-Huckel potential are …

Factors Affecting The Growth Of A Black Guillemot Colony In Northern Alaska, George J. Divoky May 1998

Factors Affecting The Growth Of A Black Guillemot Colony In Northern Alaska, George J. Divoky

Biological Sciences

Annual variation in breeding populations at seabird colonies has been well documented, but there have been few long-term attempts to examine the environmental and demographic forces responsible. I studied breeding chronology and demography Black Guillemot in northern Alaska from 1975-1997 to identify the factors responsible for colony establishment and growth. The Black Guillemot is a cavity-nesting seabird whose populations are frequently limited by nest-site availability. Snowmelt in spring and snow accumulation in autumn had major effects on annual nesting initiation and success, respectively. Annual arrival at the colony and median date of egg laying was well correlated with the date …

Search For Inclusive B→Sl+L-, S. Glenn, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration May 1998

Search For Inclusive B→Sl+L-, S. Glenn, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We have searched for the effective flavor changing neutral-current decays b→sl+l- using an inclusive method. We set upper limits on the branching ratios B(b→ se+e-) < 5.7 X 10-5, B(b→ sμ+μ-) < 5.8 X 10-5 and Bb→se+μ-) < 2.2 3 10-5 [at 90% confidence level (C.L.)]. Combing the dielectron and dimuon decay modes we find b→sl+l-) < 4.2 X 10-5 (at 90% C.L.).
