In-Flight Fatigue Crack Monitoring Of An Aircraft Engine Cowling, Samuel Gordon Vaughn Iii Aug 1998

In-Flight Fatigue Crack Monitoring Of An Aircraft Engine Cowling, Samuel Gordon Vaughn Iii

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This research investigates the feasibility of implementing an in-flight fatigue crack monitoring system in an airplane to identify fatigue crack growth. An acoustic emission data acquisition system coupled with a Kohonen self organizing map neural network were used to perform the analysis.

Fatigue cracking was responsible for ripping the top of a fuselage off an Aloha Airlines Boeing 737-200 as it carried passengers over the Pacific Ocean, killing some aboard. This tragedy is perhaps a precursor of problems to come, as our nation’s aircraft age. These planes experience fatigue as they perform their daily routine of ferrying passengers from location …

Ultrafast Phenomena: A Laboratory Experiment For Undergraduates, Thomas D. Donnelly, Carl Grossman Aug 1998

Ultrafast Phenomena: A Laboratory Experiment For Undergraduates, Thomas D. Donnelly, Carl Grossman

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present a set of experiments that introduce students to ultrafast science. We discuss the relationship between the description of an ultrashort laser pulse in the frequency domain and the time domain. Using experimental results we demonstrate that this relationship is constrained by the lower limit of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Students carrying out the experiments will become familiar with ultrafast techniques, such as autocorrelation and laser cavity design, as well as various other concepts such as dispersion, Fourier transformation, interference, and nonlinear optics.

The Effects Of So2 On The Formation Of Cl2 During Co-Firing Muncipal Solid Waste With Coal, Ying Xie Aug 1998

The Effects Of So2 On The Formation Of Cl2 During Co-Firing Muncipal Solid Waste With Coal, Ying Xie

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Deacon Reaction was proposed as a mechanism for the formation of molecular chlorine during the combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW): 4HCl + O2 ↔ 2Cl2 + 2H2O As suggested by some researchers, co-firing high sulfur coal with MSW may reduce the emission of toxic chlorinated organics, resulting from the reaction between S02 and Cl2: SO2 + Cl2 + H2O → SO3 + 2HCl The effect of sulfur dioxide on the formation of chlorine through the Deacon Reaction is investigated in this study. A Lindberg Furnace was utilized and preheated to 800°C to simulate the conditions in the AFBC …

Starling Management In Agriculture, Ron J. Johnson, James F. Glahn

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were brought to the United States from Europe. They were released in New York City in 1890 and 1891 and, since that time, have spread across the country. They were observed in the midwest by 1930, in Colorado in 1939, and in California in 1942. The starling population in the United States has since grown to an estimated 140 million birds. Starlings are frequently considered pests because of the damage they cause, especially to agriculture and in urban roosts. This publication provides facts about starlings and methods to control their damage in agriculture.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The 295 K powder neutron diffraction patterns and the temperature dependence of the Mössbauer spectra of Nd2Fe17-xTix and Nd2Fe17-xTixNx have been measured. A Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction patterns yields the Nd2Fe16.32Ti0.68 and Nd2Fe16.32Ti0.68N2.7 stoichiometries for the two compounds and indicates that titanium occupies only the 6c crystallographic site and nitrogen only the 9e site in the rhombohedral Th2Zn17 structure. The insertion of interstitial nitrogen into Nd2Fe16.32Ti0.68 …

Weak Maps And Stabilizers Of Classes Of Matroids, James Geelen, James Oxley, Dirk Vertigan, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

LetFbe a field and letNbe a matroid in a class N ofF-representable matroids that is closed under minors and the taking of duals. ThenNis anF-stabilizer for N if every representation of a 3-connected member of N is determined up to elementary row operations and column scaling by a representation of any one of itsN-minors. The study of stabilizers was initiated by Whittle. This paper extends that study by examining certain types of stabilizers and considering the connection with weak maps. The notion of a universal stabilizer is introduced to identify the underlying matroid structure that guarantees thatNwill be anF′-stabilizer for …

Self-Calibrating Method For Measuring Local Multiphotonionization Yields As A Function Of Absolute Intensity, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, B. Witzel, H. Schröder, K.-L. Kompa Aug 1998

Self-Calibrating Method For Measuring Local Multiphotonionization Yields As A Function Of Absolute Intensity, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, B. Witzel, H. Schröder, K.-L. Kompa

C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications

We present a self-calibrating method for measuring local multiphoton-ionization yields as a function of absolute intensity. In contrast to the method recently described by Walker et al. [Phys. Rev. A 57, R701 (1998)], our method does not require any assumption on the intensity distribution inside a laser focus, nor does it use any mathematical procedure such as deconvolution that would be based on such an assumption. In this sense, our method is self-calibrating. The proposed method immediately gives ion yields as a function of absolute intensity. Furthermore, it allows the intensity distribution inside the focal volume to be measured with …

A Braille Translation Solution Using Autocad And Lisp, Brian E. Bennett Aug 1998

A Braille Translation Solution Using Autocad And Lisp, Brian E. Bennett

Graduate Research Papers

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1994 brought new requirements for architects, designers, and drafters to apply Braille symbol sets at various locations of public and private buildings. With production of many drawings using computer-aided drafting, the opportunity exists to automate this process, solve the problem of text to Braille conversion, and satisfy the requirements of federal regulation. This paper presents a LISP programing code structure for use within the AutoCAD drafting and design '\ software to solve the Braille symbol set translation problem with both 2D and 3D representations. An explanation of the logic and a detailed listing of …

Orientational Susceptibility And Elastic Constants Near The Nematic-Isotropic Phase Transition For Trimers With Terminal-Lateral-Lateral-Terminal Connections, Daeseung Kang, Milind P. Mahajan, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt, Chaobin He, Puwei Lu, A.C. Griffin

Faculty Publications

Magnetically induced Freedericksz measurements were performed in the nematic liquid crystal phase to extract the elastic constants of a terminal-lateral-lateral-terminal trimer, i.e., a trimer in which the connections to the first and third mesogens are at the end of the mesogen and both attachments to the central mesogen are lateral. Polymeric liquid crystals based on this unit have negative Poisson ratios. Additionally, electric field Kerr measurements were performed in the isotropic phase to extract the orientational susceptibility. The elastic constants were found to be similar to values obtained for typical monomers, albeit with a slightly enhanced ratio K-33/K-11 and reduced …

Angle-Resolved Studies Of Inner Shell Excitations For Argon, Krypton And Xenon Using Third Generation Synchrotron Sources, Ahmad H. Farhat

Dissertations

This dissertation, which is in the area of atomic physics, concentrates on the study of the interaction between VUV-soft X-ray radiation and atoms in the gas phase. The main area of interest is the study of Auger decay in atoms utilizing the process known as the resonance Auger effect, where an inner shell electron is excited to an unfilled orbital followed by the ejection of an Auger electron. The measurements in this thesis were performed by using the high resolution Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics undulator beam line, which utilizes a spherical grating monochromator at the Advanced Light Source at …

Nature Of Resonant Photoemission In Gd, Shubhra R. Mishra, Thomas K. Cummins, George Daniel Waddill, W. J. Gammon, Gerrit V. Van Der Laan, Kyle W. Goodman, James G. Tobin Aug 1998

Nature Of Resonant Photoemission In Gd, Shubhra R. Mishra, Thomas K. Cummins, George Daniel Waddill, W. J. Gammon, Gerrit V. Van Der Laan, Kyle W. Goodman, James G. Tobin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The phenomenon of resonant photoemission happens when, in addition to a direct photoemission channel, a second indirect channel opens up as the absorption threshold of a core level is crossed. A massive increase in emission cross section can occur, but the nature of the process remains clouded. Using novel magnetic linear dichroism in photoelectron spectroscopy experiments and theoretical calculations, we can now clearly demonstrate that temporal matching of the processes as well as energy matching is a requirement for true "resonant photoemission.".

Prototype Internet Consultation System For Radiologists, Boris Kovalerchuk, James F. Ruiz, Evgenii Vityaev, Steven Fisher

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The overall purpose of this study is to develop a prototype radiological consultation system. We concentrate our work on prototype software environment for the system. The system provides a second diagnostic opinion based on similar cases, incorporating the experience of radiologists, their diagnostic rules and a database of previous cases. The system allows a radiologist to enter the description of a particular case using the lexicon such as BI-RADS of American College of Radiology and retrieve the second diagnostic opinion (probable diagnosis) for a given case. The system also allows a radiologist to get other important information too. These advances …

On Agent Communication In Large Groups, Gary R. Greenfield Aug 1998

On Agent Communication In Large Groups, Gary R. Greenfield

Department of Math & Statistics Technical Report Series

The problem is fundamental and natural, yet deep - to simulate the simplest possible form of communication that can occur within a large multi-agent system. It would be prohibitive to try and survey all of the research on "communication" in general so we must restrict our focus. We will devote our efforts to synthetic communication occurring within large groups. In particular, we would like to discover a model for communication that will serve as an abstract model, a prototype, for simulating communication within large groups of biological organisms.
