From Semi-Heuristic Fuzzy Techniques To Optimal Fuzzy Methods: Mathematical Foundations And Applications, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy techniques have been successfully used in various application areas ranging from control to image processing to decision making. In all these applications, there is usually:

a general idea, and then

there are several possible implementations of this idea; e.g., we can use:

different membership functions,

different "and" and "or" operations,

different defuzzifications, etc.

In the first approximation, the results are usually reasonably robust and independent on this choice, so any heuristic or semi-heuristic choice works OK. However:

if we want to further improve the semi-heuristic "good enough" control or image processing techniques,

we must actually make the selection that …

Ultrafast Phenomena: A Laboratory Experiment For Undergraduates, T. D. Donnelly, Carl H. Grossman Aug 1998

Ultrafast Phenomena: A Laboratory Experiment For Undergraduates, T. D. Donnelly, Carl H. Grossman

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We present a set of experiments that introduce students to ultrafast science. We discuss the relationship between the description of an ultrashort laser pulse in the frequency domain and the time domain. Using experimental results we demonstrate that this relationship is constrained by the lower limit of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Students carrying out the experiments will become familiar with ultrafast techniques, such as autocorrelation and laser cavity design, as well as various other concepts such as dispersion, Fourier transformation, interference, and nonlinear optics. Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied for 24 p-wave neutron resonances in 238U from 10 to 300 eV by measuring the helicity dependence of the total neutron cross section with an improved experimental apparatus. Six resonances show statistically significant (greater than 2.9σ) parity violation. An analysis treating the PNC matrix elements as random variables yields a root-mean-square PNC matrix element M=0.67-0.16+0.24 meV. The corresponding weak spreading width Γw=(1.35-0.64+0.97)×10-7 eV.

A Further Exploration Of College Student Attrition: The Predicative Validity Of The College Adjustment Scales, Christopher Mattis Aug 1998

A Further Exploration Of College Student Attrition: The Predicative Validity Of The College Adjustment Scales, Christopher Mattis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Since little research has addressed the question, the present study sought to determine if potential psychological problems, as measured by the College Adjustment Scales, predict college attrition. For Hypothesis One, 423 subjects were used to assess the predictability of the nine College Adjustment Scales. Using logistic regression, Substance Abuse problems was the only scale found to significantly predict attrition, p <.033. Hypothesis Two examined the incremental predictive validity of the College Adjustment Scales when supplemented with the College Student Inventory, a nineteen-scale instrument designed to predict college attrition. Although the College Student Inventory significantly predicted attrition, R = -.09, p < .05, the College Adjustment Scales could not significantly incrementally predict student departure. It was concluded that the lack of representativeness of the samples was the reason for the inability of the College Adjustment Scales to predict attrition. In both samples, subjects were substantially different from the larger samples from which they were derived in that they were more female, had higher ACT scores, and had higher high school GPAs.

Predicting Academic Success In College Using The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, Katherine Bishop Aug 1998

Predicting Academic Success In College Using The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, Katherine Bishop

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The prediction of success in college has received a substantial amount of research interest. A variety of predictor variables have been examined including personality and demographic variables as well as scores on standardized college entrance examinations. However, few studies have included the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R). In the present study, this researcher examined the ability of the WAIS-R to predict college success as measured by grade point average (GPA). The participants were 49 undergraduates, from a public university, who volunteered for intellectual assessments. It was hypothesized that the WAIS-R would predict college GPA. The prediction was expected to be …

Gender Differences In College Students' Attributions For Success And Failure, Anna Hutton Aug 1998

Gender Differences In College Students' Attributions For Success And Failure, Anna Hutton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Attributions for success and failure have been the topic of much research. One area of focus is that of gender differences. Research has produced highly inconsistent results, but many believe that differences exist in the way men and women attribute success and failure. The present study was designed to identify differences in the ways college men and women make attributions for success and failure and to determine whether there are gender differences in attributions for success and failure in ego-involved areas. Three hundred and ninety undergraduate students completed the Collegiate Attributions Scale. Results showed that (a) college students are more …

Starling Management In Agriculture, Ron J. Johnson, James F. Glahn Aug 1998

Starling Management In Agriculture, Ron J. Johnson, James F. Glahn

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were brought to the United States from Europe. They were released in New York City in 1890 and 1891 and, since that time, have spread across the country. They were observed in the midwest by 1930, in Colorado in 1939, and in California in 1942. The starling population in the United States has since grown to an estimated 140 million birds. Starlings are frequently considered pests because of the damage they cause, especially to agriculture and in urban roosts. This publication provides facts about starlings and methods to control their damage in agriculture.

Monitoring Cavefish Populations And Environmental Quality In Cave Springs Cave, Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, G. O. Graening, Paul Vendrell Aug 1998

Monitoring Cavefish Populations And Environmental Quality In Cave Springs Cave, Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, G. O. Graening, Paul Vendrell

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Cave Springs Cave, Benton County, Arkansas, was monitored from October 1997 to June 1998 to determine the chemical and physical environmental quality and the status of the population of threatened Ozark cavefish, Amblyopsis rosae. The majority of the chemical parameters measured were indicative of adequate environmental quality in the Cave Springs Cave ecosystem. However, several significant problems were revealed. A trend analysis of known water quality studies of this cave complex suggests that many organic and inorganic chemicals have increased in concentration in the last 14 years. This ecologically sensitive water body did not meet Arkansas water quality regulations for …

Capillary Electrophoretic Separation Of Sulfoxides, Clair Davies Aug 1998

Capillary Electrophoretic Separation Of Sulfoxides, Clair Davies

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Chiral sulfoxides are most widely used in asymmetric synthesis. Their application as chiral synthons has now become a well-established and reliable strategy, mainly due to availability and high asymmetric induction exerted by the chiral sulfinyl group. Very few articles have been published on the separation of chiral sulfoxides; most involve HPLC or GC. The first separation of optically active sulfoxides was described by Phillips and co-workers. To date no work has been reported using capillary electrophoresis for the separation of alkylaryl sulfoxides. A series of alkylaryl sulfoxides were synthesized. Conditions for their separation were investigated using a modified 125 mM …

Seasonal Effects On The Geochemical Evolution Of The Logsdon River, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, Darlene Anthony Aug 1998

Seasonal Effects On The Geochemical Evolution Of The Logsdon River, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, Darlene Anthony

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The following research describes the collection and evaluation of geochemical data from the Logsdon River, an open-flow conduit that drains a portion of the Turnhole Spring drainage basin within the Mammoth Cave karst aquifer of south-central Kentucky. This spatial survey of nearly 10 km of continuous base-level conduit included seasonal sampling of carbon dioxide partial pressures (Pco2)> dissolved ions, and saturation indices for calcite (SIcal). The highest PC02 values are found at the upstream site, closest to the Sinkhole Plain recharge area, which creates under-saturated conditions. Rapid outgassing of C02 into the cave atmosphere creates oversaturated conditions for several thousand …

Parity nonconserving asymmetries have been measured in p-wave resonances of 106Pd and 108Pd. The data analysis requires knowledge of the neutron resonance parameters. Transmission and capture γ-ray yields were measured for En=20–2000 eV with the time-of-flight method at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). A total of 28 resonances in 106Pd and 32 resonances in 108Pd were studied. The resonance parameters for 106Pd are new for all except one resonance. In 108Pd six new resonances were observed and the precision improved for many of the resonance parameters. A Bayesian analysis was …

A Study Of High Temperature Corrosion In An Afbc System, Wie Xie Aug 1998

A Study Of High Temperature Corrosion In An Afbc System, Wie Xie

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The occurrence of furnace wall and superheater corrosion in fluidized bed combustor systems has caused some operational and economic concerns. It is generally accepted that chlorine and sulfur may play roles in this corrosion. In order to predict the performance of high chlorine or high sulfur coals in these combustion systems, it is necessary to have a better understanding of the different corrosion mechanisms in which chlorine and sulfur may be involved. It is also important to evaluate the critical point of coal chlorine content which may cause initial corrosion. The laboratory-sized atmospheric bed combustor (AFBC) at Western Kentucky University …

Parity nonconservation (PNC) was measured for 24 p-wave resonances from 8 to 300 eV in 232Th by measuring the helicity dependence of the total neutron cross section for epithermal neutrons with an improved experimental system. Ten resonances show statistically significant parity violation. For these ten resonances the analyzing powers are all positive, thus confirming the previously observed sign correlation. The data are fit to the sum of two terms, a constant asymmetry and a fluctuating asymmetry. With this ansatz the root-mean-square PNC matrix element M=1.12 meV, which corresponds to a weak spreading widthΓw=4.7×10-7 eV. For the …

Orientational Susceptibility And Elastic Constants Near The Nematic-Isotropic Phase Transition For Trimers With Terminal-Lateral-Lateral-Terminal Connections, Daeseung Kang, Milind P. Mahajan, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt

Faculty Scholarship

Magnetically induced Freedericksz measurements were performed in the nematic liquid crystal phase to extract the elastic constants of a terminal-lateral-lateral-terminal trimer, i.e., a trimer in which the connections to the first and third mesogens are at the end of the mesogen and both attachments to the central mesogen are lateral. Polymeric liquid crystals based on this unit have negative Poisson ratios. Additionally, electric field Kerr measurements were performed in the isotropic phase to extract the orientational susceptibility. The elastic constants were found to be similar to values obtained for typical monomers, albeit with a slightly enhanced ratio K33/K11 and reduced …
