Crimes Of War: A Personal Account Of The Horrors Revealed By An Investigation Of A Nazi War Criminal, Peter Watson
Crimes Of War: A Personal Account Of The Horrors Revealed By An Investigation Of A Nazi War Criminal, Peter Watson
ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law
Crimes of war pose an inherent contradiction. They demand justice, but we find ourselves uneasy at putting our enemies on trial. Since Nuremburg, such issues have challenged our morality and confronted our conscience. Is it that we recoil from the spoils of the victor, taking illegitimate advantage of the vanquished?

Por Las Espaldas Se Nos Van Entrando Con Silencio: Fr. Hidalgo's Letter To The Viceroy, Mariah F. Wade
Por Las Espaldas Se Nos Van Entrando Con Silencio: Fr. Hidalgo's Letter To The Viceroy, Mariah F. Wade
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The translation of historical documents is essential to the practices of archaeology and ethnohistory. The present translation presents the complete text of a letter written by Fray Francisco Hidalgo to the Viceroy of New Spain on November 4, 1716. This translation strives for accuracy and adds contextual information to enhance the value of the document. Fray Hidalgo's letter exemplifies how Spanish officials acquired information about the French and the various Native groups, and how they viewed their interrelationships, actions, and customs. It confirms that Fr. Hidalgo did write two letters to the French officials in Louisiana, includes important floral and …

Censorship In Chinese Cinema, Mary Lynne Calkins
Censorship In Chinese Cinema, Mary Lynne Calkins
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
With any film or play produced in China receiving close government scrutiny at each step of production, this article examines censorship in Chinese cinema in an attempt to make sense of a tradition of sometimes seemingly arbitrary decisions by the authorities. Film, as a particularly visible and communicative media, is particularly subject to governmental interference, and the Chinese government has exploited that vulnerability to the fullest. This article attempts to demonstrate that China takes a similar approach to film censorship as it does to contracts, in the sense that censorship involves continual "negotiations" rather than binding agreement, and in the …

Holistic Approaches In A Secondary Discipline-Based Art Education Curriculum, Jennifer Hicks Limle
Holistic Approaches In A Secondary Discipline-Based Art Education Curriculum, Jennifer Hicks Limle
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The primary objective of this study is to examine the possible advantages of incorporating the principles and strategies of whole language to a secondary art education curriculum. Reading, or the process of decoding symbols, is an integral part of the learning process. It is particularly pertinent to the three academically oriented components of Discipline-Based Art Education: art criticism, art history, and the study of aesthetics. The holistic strategies promoted by the whole language movement, may be characterized by an emphasis on written responses and experience-oriented, student-centered curriculum. This approach is expected to enhance the DBAE curriculum.
The possibility that primary …
Narrative Voicings In The Novels Of Roddy Doyle, Larry Poe
Narrative Voicings In The Novels Of Roddy Doyle, Larry Poe
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Scholars have generally ignored Irish novelist and playwright Roddy Doyle. Little attention has been paid to his narrative techniques or to his development as a novelist. In the American academy, thus far, only one dissertation concerning Doyle’s novels has appeared, written in 1996, by Caramine White, at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. White notes that her dissertation is the first on Doyle and “its basic purpose will be to introduce the novels to the reading public and to convince the reading public that Doyle, although a very popular artist, is also a gifted writer who should be taken …
International Legal Careers: Paths And Directions, James R. Maxeiner
International Legal Careers: Paths And Directions, James R. Maxeiner
Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce
This contribution first advances the hypothesis that there is no acknowledged path to a career in international legal practice. It then considers the value of international credentials in general in the light of that hypothesis. Finally, it discusses certain education and employment decisions one must make early in one's career.
The Presidency Of The Council Of The European Union, Bernhard Schloh
The Presidency Of The Council Of The European Union, Bernhard Schloh
Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce
There are five distinctive functions of the Presidency of the Council. They are: as manager of Council business; as a source of political initiatives; as a package-broker in negotiations; as a point of contact with other Community institutions; and as a representative of the Community in external relations. In the following pages, the first three of these functions will be grouped under the heading "The Presidency of the Council, internally," with two subheadings: General considerations, and; Specific comments respectively. The fourth will be enlarged to allow a discussion of the presidency of the European Council, and the fifth has obviously …
The Swami And The Rorschach: Spiritual Practice, Religious Experience, And Perception, Diane Jonte-Pace
The Swami And The Rorschach: Spiritual Practice, Religious Experience, And Perception, Diane Jonte-Pace
Religious Studies
I propose that the Rorschach test might serve well as such a method for investigating religion, spirituality, psychological structure, and cognition. In addition, it might bring some clarity to the debate between the decontextualists and the constructivists. In this essay I discuss three unique Rorschach studies that, in my view, represent an important step toward such a psychology of religious experience and examine their implications for Forman's decontextualist thesis.
Performance, Catherine M. Bell
Performance, Catherine M. Bell
Religious Studies
Scholars use many terms to talk about religious activity, most basically, liturgy, worship, ritual, and recently performance. Although these terms reflect different perspectives and assumptions, they share the supposition that ceremonial actions characterized by a self-conscious formality and traditionalism are a primary aspect of religion and an important focus in any project to understand religion. Nonetheless, most theories of religion since the Enlightenment have tended to emphasize the more cognitive aspects of religion no matter how rooted these were thought to be in emotional, doctrinal, or communal experience. In the last several decades, however, religious studies has become (as have …

Creation Of A Neural Network To Assist In Deciphering Degraded Ancient Hebrew Texts, Daniel Hentschel
Creation Of A Neural Network To Assist In Deciphering Degraded Ancient Hebrew Texts, Daniel Hentschel
Theses
The study of ancient manuscripts is a very important field. These manuscripts hold the keys to our past as a human race. Unfortunately, many ancient manuscripts have been degraded to the point where they are no longer legible. Many techniques have been developed to try to read parts of illegible documents. Neural networks are a fairly new technology with an extremely wide range of applications. The goal of this project is to determine how useful a neural network would be as a tool to help in deciphering ancient manuscripts, and, more specifically, Hebrew manuscripts. An image processing application was created …

On The Phonetic Duration Of Huariapano Rhymes, Steve Parker
On The Phonetic Duration Of Huariapano Rhymes, Steve Parker
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
Huariapano, an extinct language of Peru, exhibits an unusual process of coda epenthesis by which the segment [h] is inserted in odd-numbered syllables of the prosodic word. Crucial to an understanding of this phenomenon is the correct interpretation of its metrical function: do these [h]'s represent an augmentation of the strong syllables of trochaic feet, or a partial devoicing of the nuclear vowel in the weak syllables of iambic feet? This article presents the results of an instrumental study which indicates that insofar as their relative duration is concerned, syllable-final [h]'s in Huariapano pattern as fully moraic coda consonants in …
Science Of Accounts: Bookkeeping Rooted In The Ideal Of Science, Keith P. Mcmillan
Science Of Accounts: Bookkeeping Rooted In The Ideal Of Science, Keith P. Mcmillan
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper presents the discourse of the "science of accounts" as it developed in 19th century U.S. accounting literature. The paper initially emphasizes the meaning which the term "science of accounts" had during this period. In addition, it presents the contemporary belief that this science helped reveal the essential economic ontology, which bookkeeping makes visible. Second, the paper analyzes how this rational institutional myth became institutionalized within the emerging profession's technical journals and its professional organization, the Institute of Accounts. Through reliance on this scientific foundation, the newly emerging profession could gain greater social legitimacy, leading to the first CPA …
Wiring The Writing Center, Eric H. Hobson
Wiring The Writing Center, Eric H. Hobson
All USU Press Publications
As computers have brought important developments to composition studies, writing centers have found themselves creating and improvising applications for their own work and often for the writing programs and institutions in which they live. Online tutorials, websites with an array of downloadable resources for students, scheduling and email possibilities--all of these are becoming common-place among writing centers across the country. However, in spite of impressive work by individual centers, exchange on these topics between and among writing centers has been sporadic. As more writing centers approach getting "wired" and others continue to upgrade, the need for communication and collaboration becomes …

As the locale for one of the oldest continuing cultural, linguistic, and ethnic entities, Iran provides archaeological evidence for dance portrayed on Mesopotamean pottery dated to 5000 BCE (Zoka', 1978). Evidence for continuing choreographic activity is documented in the historical writings of foreigners, from biblical times to ancient Greece to the Persian and Ottoman empires. Iconographic artworks showing dance also exist, such as silver objects from the Sasanian period (224-650 CE) and Persian miniatures from the twelfth century. Iran is, and most likely has always been, a place of immense ethnic and linguistic diversity, a continental crossroad open to influences …
