Interactive Television Instructors' Perceptions Of Students' Nonverbal Responsiveness And Effects On Distance Teaching., Timothy Patrick Mottet

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between interactive television instructors' perceptions of students' nonverbal responsiveness and their perceptions of distance students, teaching effectiveness, teaching satisfaction, teacher-student interpersonal relationships, and their preferring to teach in the interactive television classroom versus the traditional face-to-face classroom. The sample included 157 interactive television instructors who currently teach or have recently taught in both the traditional face-to-face and interactive television classrooms. All participants were mailed two identical surveys. One was to be completed on students in the traditional face-to-face classroom and the other in the interactive television classroom. The Influence Of Seventeenth-Century Anglo-Saxon Scholarship On Milton's Prose, "The History Of Britain", And "Paradise Lost"., Matthew B. Mccrady Jan 1998

The Influence Of Seventeenth-Century Anglo-Saxon Scholarship On Milton's Prose, "The History Of Britain", And "Paradise Lost"., Matthew B. Mccrady

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Was John Milton’s prose and poetry in any way influenced by seventeenth-century Anglo-Saxon scholarship? The answer is "yes." Just as John Milton was in dialogue with radical seventeenth-century political groups such as the Levellers and Diggers—a ground-breaking thesis first proposed by Christopher Hill—so Milton was also in dialogue with those academics and antiquarians researching and, in some ways, reinventing the Anglo-Saxon past. Through a close reading of Milton’s first Defense and other selected prose works, as well as the History of Britain and Paradise Lost, this thesis proposes to reexamine an old issue that has never been satisfactorily explicated. In …

Natural Law And The Ethics Of Discourse, John M. Finnis Jan 1998

Natural Law And The Ethics Of Discourse, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

This essay argues that Plato's critical analysis of the ethics of discourse is superior to Habermas', and more generally that Habermas has no sufficient reason to propose or suppose the philosophical superiority of "modernity." The failure of Hume and Kant and much modern philosophy to understand the concept and content of reasons for action underlies Habermas' attempted distinction between ethics and morality, and Rawls' concept of public reason. A proper study of discourse also yields a metaphysics of the person, and thus reinforces the ethics.

Organizational Culture And Leadership At Berea College: An Historical Inquiry Into Saga Development And Underlying Cultural Assumptions., Gerald Emerson Wood Jan 1998

Organizational Culture And Leadership At Berea College: An Historical Inquiry Into Saga Development And Underlying Cultural Assumptions., Gerald Emerson Wood

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Culture is a pervasive concept that is not easily encompassed in any one definition. Culture within an organization is both process and product. It is both a dynamic agent of influence within the temporal and spatial context of organizational life and an object of study approached from the actor's point of view and thickly described. My general interest is in the cultural context of colleges, and more specifically in the part that culture has played in the formation and transformation of the mission and role of Berea College as it has sought to educate marginalized people for nearly 150 years. …

Constructing Identities And Defining The Nation: Germany Since 1949., Frank Anthony Allevato Jan 1998

Constructing Identities And Defining The Nation: Germany Since 1949., Frank Anthony Allevato

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Not long after Germans began the historic task of dismantling the Berlin Wall in 1989, their country was again reunited after forty-five years of division. For the second time in less than a century, a majority of Europe’s Germans were brought together under the banner of a single political sovereignty. As the enlarged Federal Republic psychologically reorients and physically reconstructs itself, the event is likely to have continued European and worldwide implications. Understanding the new Germany’s internal development and its evolving self-perceptions is to conceive of the country’s role now and in the years ahead; central to understanding Germany today …

Symbolic Behavior: Reorganizing And Expanding Stimulus Classes Through Matching And Naming., Oliver Wirth Jan 1998

Symbolic Behavior: Reorganizing And Expanding Stimulus Classes Through Matching And Naming., Oliver Wirth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the present study was to further clarify the structural and functional properties of stimulus equivalence classes and functional stimulus classes relative to the procedures that establish them. With college students, stimulus equivalence classes were established using a standard selection-based matching-to-sample (MTS) procedure, and functional stimulus classes were established using a topography-based naming task. During the naming trials, students were trained to say distinct nonsense words in the presence of arbitrarily assigned sets of symbols. Computer-controlled voice-recognition software was used to record and analyze students' vocal responses for accuracy and speed. Experiment 1 examined whether stimulus equivalence classes …

The Nature Of Semantic Memory Deficits In Alzheimer's Disease: Semantic Degradation Or Working Memory Deficits., Staci Robyn Jan 1998

The Nature Of Semantic Memory Deficits In Alzheimer's Disease: Semantic Degradation Or Working Memory Deficits., Staci Robyn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The nature of semantic memory deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been subject to controversy. It is unclear whether semantic memory is impaired because of degradation of semantic knowledge or due to information processing deficits. This study compared 18 patients with AD to 18 control participants who did not differ significantly in age, education, or gender on three working memory tasks. Three variations of the Self Ordered Pointing Task (SOPT) which varied in the degree of ability to utilize semantic processing skills were administered. Results indicated that patients with AD demonstrated working memory impairments compared to control participants. However, patients …

A Description Of The Instructional And Assessment Practices Of Selected Elementary Teachers., Mary D. Morris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three distinct teachers, recognized by their administrators as excellent, were chosen to participate in a study designed to describe a recent phenomena in education. All three teachers were members of a faculty that was recognized as a Professional Development School in collaboration with the Benedum Foundation. Traditionally educators have looked to their local school district to provide continuing education. This professional development covers a wide range of topics and is given with a random approach. Recently there have been schools that have decided that their instruction and assessment could change to incorporate more alternative methods to accommodate a variety of …

Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items., James.R Kinney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, regression analysis was used to examine the affects of item clarity and probability of endorsement on response latencies of 60 undergraduates responding on personality test items from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire(16 Personality Factor test) (Cattell,Eber & Tatsuoka,1970,5th Edition).Response latencies to personality test items, though frequently studied, have yet to be operationally utilized in the interpretation of personality tests.Forty-four items from the 16 Personality Factor test were selected. Each item from the original test was rated for clarity and matched with an emotionally neutral statement with an equivalent number of words. The standard test items and reconstituted items were also matched for …

Turning Servile Opportunities To Gold: A Strategic Analysis Of The Corporate Opportunities Doctrine, Eric L. Talley Jan 1998

Turning Servile Opportunities To Gold: A Strategic Analysis Of The Corporate Opportunities Doctrine, Eric L. Talley

Faculty Scholarship

Perhaps no single motif permeates corporate law and governance literature like the problem of agency costs. Though modest in concept, the canonical principal-agent framework yields fundamental insights into virtually every economic relationship involving the firm. These insights, in turn, not only animate prevailing positive accounts of the modern corporation, but they also provide a normative basis for regulating the oft-lamented gulf between ownership and control.

Despite their pervasiveness, problems of agency costs are rarely more vexing than when an agent is also a potential competitor. A notable example of such a scenario occurs when a corporate manager acquires information about …

Teachers' Life Histories As Curriculum Context, Rebekah D. Kelleher Jan 1998

Teachers' Life Histories As Curriculum Context, Rebekah D. Kelleher

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

This qualitative study focuses on the teacher as curriculum enactor. Using life history methodology, the study explores how ordinary teachers' life experiences impact their present classroom decisions. The purpose of the study is three-fold: to give voice to the classroom teacher as curriculum expert; to encourage reflective practice; and to contribute to curriculum knowledge by focusing on the enacted curriculum. Three female middle school teachers participated in structured and unstructured interviews in which they shared their life stories and reflected on the origin of their teacher knowledge and behavior. The researcher reviewed transcripts of interviews and notes from observations of …

Liberalism And Multiculturalism: The Politics Of Indifference, Chandran Kukathas Jan 1998

Liberalism And Multiculturalism: The Politics Of Indifference, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In modern societies, particularly the societies of the liberal democratic West, cultural diversity poses a challenge not only to the makers of government policy, but also to the philosopher looking to understand how it might be possible-in principle-for people of different ways to live together. The challenge is posed because society's institutions have been challenged, as the members of different groups have demanded "recognition." They have demanded not simply recognition of their claims to a (just) share of the social pie but, more important, recognition of their distinct identities as members of particular cultural communities within society. The persistence and, …

Comparing The Discourse Of Popular Politics In Korea And China: From Civil Society To Social Movements, William A. Callahan Jan 1998

Comparing The Discourse Of Popular Politics In Korea And China: From Civil Society To Social Movements, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Korea Journal’s series of articles addressing the question of civil society are a timely addition to the struggle over the discourse of democracy which is common to many countries in Pacific Asia. Since Professor Han Sang-Jin’s article does an excellent job of critically summarizing Chung Chulhee, Cho Hein and David Steinberg’s arti cles on Korean civil society, it seems that there is not much more to be said on the topic. To add to this discussion I will try to expand the discourse geographically and conceptually. Geographically, I will compare the discourse of popular politics in Korea with that …

The Ideology Of Miss Thailand In National, Consumerist And Transnational Space, William A. Callahan Jan 1998

The Ideology Of Miss Thailand In National, Consumerist And Transnational Space, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Every morning at 8:00 a.m. (with flag-raising) and every evening at 6:00 P.M. (with flag lowering) the official symbolic identity of Thai- land is displayed - by state order - on television. These displays are a graphic daily reminder of how nationalism, the military, and the media are tightly bound together in Thailand. Though it seems like a timeless tradition of respect for essential national symbols, this tele- vized ritual is the result of a "revolutionary order" issued by the right-wing dictators who took power with the brutal October 6, 1976, massacre and military coup.1 These media productions are part …

Misery And Madness?: The Irish Face In Modern Irish Drama, Rob Mawyer '98 Jan 1998

Misery And Madness?: The Irish Face In Modern Irish Drama, Rob Mawyer '98

Honors Projects

The primary point of this paper is to examine the Irish face as it is seen in these dramas, analyzing how it functions as a symbol of the identity of Irish manhood. On one level, the Irish face reflects the traditional stereotype of the Irish hero: pathetic, drunken, crazy. It incorporates everything that is detestable about being Irish. However, it is also a shield, representing a strength that is not initially apparent. The Irish face establishes a distance from the misery and emptiness of life, a distance that underscores both the isolation of the character and the inner strength that …
