Deinstitutionalization Effects On Medication Use For People With Mental Retardation, Paul D. Kolstoe
Deinstitutionalization Effects On Medication Use For People With Mental Retardation, Paul D. Kolstoe
Theses and Dissertations
Historically, patterns of psychoactive medication use in institutional settings for people with mental retardation were considered excessive. Service standards substantially reduced levels of such medication use. Similar research in community settings has been limited, but comparisons between the two settings are fraught with complicating variables. Rapid deinstitutionalization in North Dakota provided a unique opportunity to follow the medication use patterns of people who stayed and those who left the institution. Follow up time periods were selected for statewide accreditation (1989) and several years later through which those standards have been consistently met (1995). Psychoactive medication use decreased with the onset …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Hurricane Bob, a category 3 storm, made landfall on Cape Cod in August 1991, and its effects on watersheds and adjoining estuaries were detected in the ongoing studies being caried out as part of the Waquoit Bay Land Margin Ecosystems Research project. On land, Bob had only minor overall effects on forests; localized wind bursts did snap and break trees in small and widely scattered forest parcels. Wind stripped up to half the leaves of deciduous trees and many herbaceous plants on the watershed, and most remaining leaves were damaged by salt, so that by the end of Aug, Cape …

Characterisation Of Leishmania Isolates From Laikipia District, Kenya, N. N. Massamba, M. J. Mutinga, C. C. Kamau
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Using cloned kDNA sequences from the reference strain of Leishmania tropica IC-067, we have screened leishmanial isolates from Laikipia District of Kenya and identified these isolates as L. tropica. One isolate, IC-331, from a rat (Rattus rattus) was typed as L. tropica. This is the first time that L. tropica has been isolated from a wild rodent in Kenya and thus the first indication that the disease caused by L. tropica might be a zoonosis. The leishmanial isolates, especially those of sandflies, display extensive heterogeneity, prompting a need for selecting local and/or regional reference strains to generate species-specific DNA probes …

Reconsidering The Hiv/Aids Prevention Needs Of Latino Women In The United States, Marcela Raffaelli, Mariana Suarez-Al-Adam
Reconsidering The Hiv/Aids Prevention Needs Of Latino Women In The United States, Marcela Raffaelli, Mariana Suarez-Al-Adam
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The HIV/AIDS epidemic represents an ever-increasing threat to Latino populations in the United States, with women being most affected by this deadly disease. In this chapter, we explore the challenges Latino women face as they attempt to reduce their risk of sexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Our main interest lies in examining how the economic, cultural, and social realities of women's lives contribute to their risk of HIV infection and constrain their ability to reduce that risk. Because there is neither a cure for AIDS nor a vaccination to block HIV transmission, prevention of infection is …

Electrochemical Investigation Of Effect Of Br- On Redox Behavior Of (Tpp)Co, Chuan-Wei Yan, Hai-Chao Lin, Xiang-Qin Lin
Electrochemical Investigation Of Effect Of Br- On Redox Behavior Of (Tpp)Co, Chuan-Wei Yan, Hai-Chao Lin, Xiang-Qin Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
The effect of Br- anion on electrochemical behavior of (TPP)Co was investigated in 1,2 dichloroethane solution by microelectrode and thin layer cyclic voltammetry technique. It was found that the axially coordination of one Br- anion to (TPP)Co(Ⅲ)(Br-)2 shifts the potential of porphyrin system to more positive value. The reduction peak of 0.12 V (vs.SCE) is attributed to the reduction of (TPP)Co(Ⅲ)(Br-). It is also postulated that the reduction of (TPP)Co(Ⅲ)(Br-)2 occurred at a more negative potential where the reduction of the Co(Ⅱ)/Co(Ⅰ) process happened.
The Latest World Wide Progress In Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Yi Jiang
The Latest World Wide Progress In Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Yi Jiang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a novel, green electricity generation technology, which has been showing rapid development since 1980's. In light of its high efficiency, environmental friendly, fuel adaptability and long term stability, the Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) of this hype of full cell have been emphasized in a large number of developed countries. Based on the information communicated at the latest symposium on SOFC held last year in Aachen (Germany) and the knowledge gained through years of research in this field, a comprehensive review on the latest development of the tubular, this planar SOFC as well as …

Studies Of Spinal Li(1+X)Mn(2-X)O4 Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery, Xiao-Mei Wu, Qing-He Yang, Zhong-Kao Jin, Hao-Qing Wu, Xiang-Fu Zong
Journal of Electrochemistry
The spinel Li intercalation compound Li1+xMn2-xO4 (0< x <1) was prepared by using techniques of cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical parameters of Li1+xMn2-xO4 electrode vary as either the starting materials or the synthesis temperature changes. It was found that the initial capacity and reversible behaviors of the Li1+xMn2-xO4 electrode depends on the amount of the excess Li, represented as x in Li1+xMn2-xO4. The reversible of Li intercalation process for Li1+xMn2-xO4 electrode was demonstrate by cyclic voltammograms.

Study On Electrosynthesis Of Butyl Butyrate At Conducting Oxide Anode Support On Titanium, Jun-Xiang He, Jin-Cheng Zhou, Kang-Ning Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Synthesis of butyl butyrate by direct electroxidation of n butyl alcohol and the electrochemical behaviors of several selected conducting oxide electrodes (Pb/PbO2, Ti/PbO2, i/SnO2+Sb2O3/PbO2 and Ti/SnO2+Sb2O3+PdOx/PbO2) have been investigated. The results demonstrated that the intermediate layers of SnO2, Sb2O3 and PdOx could significantly decrease the interfacial resistance of the electrodes, and that the Ti/SnO2+Sb2O3+PdOx/PbO2 electrode possessed better electrocatelytic performance than others.
Double Differential Cross Section Of Helium Ionization By Proton Impact, A. L. Godunov, V. A. Schipakov, Michael Schulz
Double Differential Cross Section Of Helium Ionization By Proton Impact, A. L. Godunov, V. A. Schipakov, Michael Schulz
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A theoretical analysis for doubly differential cross sections of the single ionization of helium by proton impact as a function of the scattering angle and projectile energy loss is presented. We have used two different theoretical methods. The first approach involved an approximate solution of Faddeev-Merkuriev equations for the three-body Coulomb problem. The second approach employed the expansion of the transition amplitude in the Born series over the projectile-target interaction up to second order. A relation between these two methods was established for the case of fast collisions. It has been demonstrated that, for small scattering angles, the post-collision interaction …

Study On Ni-Co-S-Mo Alloys New Cathode Material For Aquous Electrolysis, Yuan-Shou Xie, Quan-Feng Liu
Journal of Electrochemistry
The parameters of electrodeposion of Ni-Co-S-Mo alloy were studied. The experimental results indicate that the electrodeposition alloy shows high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction, as well as better mechanical strength and higher chemical stability. The mechanism of catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction on this type of alloy electrode was also investigated by means of polarization curve and cyclic voltametry.

Wet Deposition In A Global Size-Dependent Aerosol Transport Model: 2. Influence Of The Scavenging Scheme On 210pb Vertical Profiles, Surface Concentrations, And Deposition, W Guelle, Y J. Balkanski, Jack E. Dibb, M Schulz, F Dulac
Earth Sciences
The main atmospheric sink for submicron aerosols is wet removal. Lead 210, the radioactive decay product of 222Rn, attaches immediately after being formed to submicron particles. Here we compare the effects of three different wet-scavenging schemes used in global aerosol simulations on the 210Pb aerosol distribution using an off-line, size-resolved, global atmospheric transport model. We highlight the merits and shortcomings of each scavenging scheme at reproducing available measurements, which include concentrations in surface air and deposition, as well as vertical profiles observed over North America and western and central North Pacific. We show that model-measurement comparison of total …
