Dennison Manufacturing Company: An Introduction To The Company, Its Most Influential President And Its Archive, Gloria Vollmers
Dennison Manufacturing Company: An Introduction To The Company, Its Most Influential President And Its Archive, Gloria Vollmers
Accounting Historians Notebook
Aaron Dennison started a small family business in Brunswick, Maine in 1844 for his father, Andrew. Initially, the only product was hand constructed paper boxes for watch makers and jewelers. Eliphalet Dennison, another son, bought the business from his father and moved it in 1855 to Roxbury, Massachusetts for its larger markets. There he continued making boxes but expanded into tags and later into crepe and other paper products. To acquire larger facilities and access to a railway siding, H.K. Dyer, president from 1892-1909, moved the company to Framingham, Massachusetts in 1896. The company also had a factory in Marlboro, …

Adult Childrens' Communication And Closeness With Parents, Diana Decuir
Adult Childrens' Communication And Closeness With Parents, Diana Decuir
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This writer reviews some of the most influential factors found in studies of adult childparent relationships, including divorce, surrogate parents, coresidency, caregiving, proximity, family size, and gender. Focusing on the "feminine tilt" in family relationships, research reveals explanations such as caregiving, kinkeeping, and gender identity issues. The author proposes the possibility that the female bias in parent-child relationships has more to do with subjective thought process than biological sex. An analysis was conducted on mailed-in-surveys for 264 Kentucky adults, ages 30 to 49, who completed questions pertaining to their communication and closeness with their parents, and one fourth of the …
Review Of The Fatal Confrontation: Historical Studies Of American Indians, Environment, And Historians By Wilbur Jacobs, Patrick Goines
Review Of The Fatal Confrontation: Historical Studies Of American Indians, Environment, And Historians By Wilbur Jacobs, Patrick Goines
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Throughout his long, distinguished career Wilbur Jacobs has been a fervent and consistent advocate for a more inclusive approach to the study of American history. Using the implements of the ethnographer, demographer, and environmentalist, he has not simply painted our historical landscape with a broader brush; more importantly, he has added clarity and texture to the canvas.
The ten essays reprinted here show the breadth and depth of Jacobs's scholarship and remind us of his profound influence on the succeeding generation of historians. Spanning almost forty years, they not only trace Jacobs's intellectual development, but also show our historiographical evolution. …

Spatial And Ethnic Patterns Of Real Estate Control Affecting Upward Mobility Of Immigrants In A Nineteenth Century Industrial Community, Debra S. Alfonso
Spatial And Ethnic Patterns Of Real Estate Control Affecting Upward Mobility Of Immigrants In A Nineteenth Century Industrial Community, Debra S. Alfonso
Masters Theses
The subject of immigrant success has previously been analyzed in the context of ethnic characteristics, individual heroism, worker solidarity, and advancement of industrialization. Most immigrants start at the bottom of the social-economic ladder. The mechanisms of advancement vary depending on both ethnic values and the constraints of the socioeconomic system. The key variable is normally thought to be advancing occupational status.
The problem addressed is how did recent immigrants to a 19th century steel-town obtain home ownership and advancement in spite of declining industrial wages. Using a GIS system to link and analyze geographic and historical records I was able …

Clientilism And Clientification: Impediments To Strengths Based Social Work Practice, Charles D. Cowger
Clientilism And Clientification: Impediments To Strengths Based Social Work Practice, Charles D. Cowger
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A strengths-based practice perspective is, at best, weak and, perhaps, irrelevant in social service structures that are powered by social control values, driven by the market economy, and protected by professional self interests. This paper proposes that the relationship between the patron and the client, as expressed by the metaphor "clientelism" in the development literature, and "clientification", as described by Habermas, are informative as significant obstacles to the implementation of strengthsbased social work practice and social service delivery. The paper argues that for strengths-based practice to be viable, it and its advocates must confront more fundamental change by becoming more …

The Scope Of Hermeneutics In Natural Science, Patrick A. Heelan
The Scope Of Hermeneutics In Natural Science, Patrick A. Heelan
Research Resources
THE SCOPE OF HERMENEUTICS IN NATURAL SCIENCE Hermeneutics or interpretation is concerned with the generation, transmission, and acceptance of meaning within the lifeworld and was the original method of the human sciences stemming from F. Schleiermacher and W. Dilthey. Hermeneutic philosophy refers mostly to M. Heidegger’s. This paper addresses natural science from the perspective of Heidegger’s analysis of meaning and interpretation. Its purpose is to incorporate into the philosophy of science those aspects of historicality, culture, and tradition that are absent from the traditional analysis of theory and explanation, to re-orient the current discussion about scientific realism around the hermeneutics …

Religious Studies
Scholars use many terms to talk about religious activity, most basically, liturgy, worship, ritual, and recently performance. Although these terms reflect different perspectives and assumptions, they share the supposition that ceremonial actions characterized by a self-conscious formality and traditionalism are a primary aspect of religion and an important focus in any project to understand religion. Nonetheless, most theories of religion since the Enlightenment have tended to emphasize the more cognitive aspects of religion no matter how rooted these were thought to be in emotional, doctrinal, or communal experience. In the last several decades, however, religious studies has become (as have …
Ethics, Pests, And Towns: Economic Development And Income Distribution On The Western Frontier, L. Dwight Israelsen
Ethics, Pests, And Towns: Economic Development And Income Distribution On The Western Frontier, L. Dwight Israelsen
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Careful studies of the distribution of income in nineteenth-century United States have been hampered by a paucity of available data. This study undertakes the analysis of factors influencing the distribution of personal income in the Great Basin region of the western United States during the period 1855-1900. The study utilizes estimates of full income by individual based on information contained in the General Economic Records of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mean income and Gini ratios are calculated for the region for the years 1855,1857,1859,1861,1866,1868,1870,1872,1880, 1885, 18980, 1895, and 1900. The number of individuals included in the …

Towards An Institutional Analysis Of Accounting Change In The Royal Tobacco Factory Of Seville, Salvador Carmona, Mahmoud Ezzamel, Fernando Gutierrez
Towards An Institutional Analysis Of Accounting Change In The Royal Tobacco Factory Of Seville, Salvador Carmona, Mahmoud Ezzamel, Fernando Gutierrez
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper is initially informed by an institutional sociological framework to analyze changes in accounting practices that took place in the Royal Tobacco Factory (RTF) of Seville during the period 1760-1790. We argue that the significantly greater development and use of accounting practices during that period can be linked to the move to the much larger and more purposefully built new factories, the decline in total tobacco consumption, and the pressure to increase revenue for the Spanish Crown while reducing production cost and maintaining high product quality to deter entry. These new accounting practices were developed in part with the …

Description, Objectivity, And A Robust Pluralism: A Reply To Fleischman And Tyson; Point/Counterpoint, Terry K. Sheldahl
Accounting Historians Journal
If more than welcome in intent, Fleischman and Tyson's article "Archival Researchers: An Endangered Species?" [1997] prompted for me another question, "With friends like this, . . . ?." It is a sad commentary on our field if their contributions are so apt to be "minimalized" that it may "embarras[s]" mainly descriptive accounting historians [Fleischman and Tyson (F&T), 1997, pp. 102, 102 fn.] to be so cited. It is probably not coincidental that other accounting scholars are likely to deem historical study more intellectual the more it is "interpretive" in a mode intellectualist. In any case, as an unembarrassed predominantly …
