United States - Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences Of Early American Cold War Policy, Robert Earl Patterson Aug 1998

United States - Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences Of Early American Cold War Policy, Robert Earl Patterson

Master's Theses

From 1945 to 1949, Indonesian nationalists struggled for independence against their Dutch colonial rulers. For most of the period, American foreign policy favored the Netherlands in its desire to reign once again over the archipelago. American foreign policy strategy advocated a "Europe first" position, and possessed finite resources to contain Soviet expansion in the developing cold war. State Department policy planners sided with European powers as they attempted to resume the status quo ante in Southeast Asia following World War II. Colonies were considered essential to the recoveries of Western European powers economically, politically, and psychologically.

Managing Urban Land In China: The Emerging Legal Framework And Its Role In Development, Mark T. Kremzner Jul 1998

Managing Urban Land In China: The Emerging Legal Framework And Its Role In Development, Mark T. Kremzner

Washington International Law Journal

This Article examines the emerging legal framework for urban land management in China with reference to several perspectives on the role of the state in economic development: modernization, dependency, and statism. A key function of the urban land management and planning regime in the People's Republic of China is to promote economic development. Similarly, law and legal institutions in the reform era are used as an instrument to secure development policies. China's urban land use laws have the purpose and effect of channeling capital into land development and urban renewal projects through the commodification of land use rights. While the …

A Historical Analysis Of Corporal Punishment In American Public Schools, Cathy A. Hanson

Theses and Graduate Projects

This historical thesis analyzed information about corporal punishment in American public schools from the early 1900's to the present. This historical research study examined economic, social and political trends and explored the relationship they have with corporal punishment. The study examined children's behavioral expressions to which corporal punishment was designed to respond and evaluated the effectiveness of corporal punishment. The study found a relationship between students who live in poverty and displayed difficult behavioral expressions at school and the use of corporal punishment. Students who live in poverty experience corporal punishment in their school more often than their peers who …

Crisis Intervention And The State Comprehensive Mental Health Service Plan Act Of 1986 (P.L. 99-660): An Historical Analysis, Thomas J. Barron

Theses and Graduate Projects

Despite numerous contributions by theorists and crisis service providers in the field of crisis intervention, few reports have examined underlying legislation. This study reviews policy trends in past mental health legislation and crisis programs between 1840 to 1996. It focuses on the State Comprehensive Mental Health Plan Act of 1986 (Public Law 99-660) and describes the response to such legislation in Minnesota. An incremental policy process illustrates how crisis intervention services have evolved to be part of the array of comprehensive mental health services.

Although Caenorhabditis elegans was chosen and modified to be an organism that would facilitate a reductionist program for neurogenetics, recent research has provided evidence for properties that are emergent from the neurons. While neurogenetic advances have been made using C. elegans which may be useful in explaining human neurobiology, there are severe limitations on C. elegans to explain any significant human behavior.

Mirroring The Life Of Their Times: The Group Legacy In The Changing Face Of Theatre, Christopher J. Stephens Jun 1998

Mirroring The Life Of Their Times: The Group Legacy In The Changing Face Of Theatre, Christopher J. Stephens

Theses

Christopher J. Stephens’ thesis, Mirroring the Life of Their Times: The Group Legacy in the Changing Face of Theatre, explores the enduring influence of the Group Theatre on American theatre practice, particularly in actor training and ensemble performance. Founded during the Great Depression, the Group Theatre was inspired by the work of Stanislavski and the Moscow Art Theatre, but evolved its own distinct ideology rooted in realism, political engagement, and emotional truth on stage. Stephens traces the formation of the Group through the efforts of Harold Clurman, Cheryl Crawford, and Lee Strasberg, examining their emphasis on ensemble acting, psychological …

The Level Of Confidence Of School Nurses To Perform 46 Specified School Nursing Services, Camille Maysonave Brinks

Master's Projects

The newly hired, novice school nurse often transitions from a baccalaureate program or an acute care setting to the school nurse role. This newly hired school nurse may be ill prepared for the wide range of services required in school nursing. The California, coastal school district where this pilot study took place, needed to develop an orientation program for newly hired school nurses. The purpose of the project was to ascertain confidence levels of novice school nurses in performing their new role as compared to experienced nurses. Benner's framework "From Novice to Expert" was used to guide this study. The …

Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items, James R. Kinney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, regression analysis was used to examine the affects of item clarity and probability of endorsement on response latencies of 60 undergraduates responding on personality test items from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 Personality Factor test) (Cattell, Eber, & Tatsuoka, 1970, 5th Edition). Response latencies to personality test items, though frequently studied, have yet to be operationally utilized in the interpretation of personality tests. Forty-four items from the 16 Personality Factor test were selected. Each item from the original test was rated for clarity and matched with an emotionally neutral statement with an equivalent number of words. …

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In this Article, Professor Oldham provides a unique historical study of the special, or struck, jury in the United States. First, Professor Oldham discusses the influence of the 1730 English statute on eighteenth- century American law and reviews the procedures of several states in which the struck jury remains valid, in addition to the once authorized procedures that states have since declared invalid. He also analyzes the relationship between the struck jury and peremptory challenges. Second, Professor Oldham analyzes the special qualifications of the jurors comprising special juries in the context of the "blue ribbon," or "high-class, " jury, the …

The United States Department of Health and Human Services wrote Healthy People 2000 National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives. Historical Archaeology Of Alaskan Placer Gold Mining Settlements: Evaluating Process-Pattern Relationships, Robin Owen Mills Apr 1998

Historical Archaeology Of Alaskan Placer Gold Mining Settlements: Evaluating Process-Pattern Relationships, Robin Owen Mills

Anthropology

The objective of this research is to explicate appropriate methods for investigating relationships between past historical processes and variables, and resulting contemporary patterns in archaeological and historical data sets. Turn-of-the-twentieth century placer gold mining in interior Alaska is used as a case study to evaluate these relationships. By linking observable patterns in historical data sets with the variables and processes that in part create and shape them, a more-complete, context-specific explanation of past events and actions emerges when the data are evaluated in specific historical settings. The methodological approach used here is to just formulate explicit "expectations," and then to …
