Effects Of First And Second Trimester Vaginal Bleeding On Pregnancy Outcome, S A. Karim, I Bakhtawar, A T. Butta, M Jalil

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

The effects of vaginal bleeding during first and second trimester on pregnancy outcomes was assessed in a hospital-based population of 268 non-diabetic women. The group of non-bleeders comprised 173 females whereas, there were 71 females with first and 24 with second trimester bleeding. Fetal loss (abortion) occurred in 34% of first trimester and 25% of second trimester bleeders. Low birth weight and preterm delivery were significantly associated with second trimester haemorrhage. The results suggest that first and second trimester vaginal bleeding correlates with adverse infant outcomes.

The Effect Of The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act On California Native American's Independence, Gregory Elvine-Kreis Feb 1998

The Effect Of The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act On California Native American's Independence, Gregory Elvine-Kreis

San Diego Law Review

This article argues that the "Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) has comprised and is in contradiction to the relationship between the United States government and the Native American tribes of California." The policies of the Act undermine the principle that Native American tribes be treated as sovereign nations. Arguments from precedent and history are marshaled to illustrate contradiction in IGRA decisions. A history of California's Native American tribes, their prospect for economic self-sufficiency, and the current importance of their gaming industry is offered. The author concludes with a plea to California voters to turn jurisdiction over Native American tribes granted …

Gender-Based Pay Gaps: Methodological And Policy Issues In University Salary Studies, Myra Marx Ferree, Julia Mcquillan Feb 1998

Gender-Based Pay Gaps: Methodological And Policy Issues In University Salary Studies, Myra Marx Ferree, Julia Mcquillan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Methodology is often a point of contention in gender-based salary studies. Although this debate seems at first to be merely about technical issues, it also has an important conceptual dimension. We argue that there are two competing implicit conceptions of discrimination, one institutional and the other individual, that underlie many such debates. We first contrast the preferred methodologies advanced by each side, the policy capturing approach and the flagging approach, and explore the theoretical meaning of their statistical models. We then describe a practical application of both methodological approaches in one specific salary inequity study. In conclusion, we reflect on …

Staffing Strategies For A More Diverse Workforce: Case Examples In Cornell Cooperative Extension, Soneeta Grogan, Barbara Eshelman Feb 1998

Staffing Strategies For A More Diverse Workforce: Case Examples In Cornell Cooperative Extension, Soneeta Grogan, Barbara Eshelman

Journal of Extension

Strategies for recruiting a diverse workforce are illustrated by case examples from the three stages in Cornell Cooperative Extension's staffing process. Organizational change to address diversity and pluralism requires a change in organizational culture. In the process of recruiting staff from diverse backgrounds, Cornell Cooperative Extension is creating new rules to become more inclusive. Implications indicate that retaining staff from diverse backgrounds needs to be as high a priority as recruiting them. Preparing the workplace to support staff from diverse backgrounds requires greater attention. Changing organizational behavior is the first step in creating a workplace that supports diversity and pluralism. …

Affluent Parents Of Young Children: Neglected Parent Education Audience, Maureen T. Mulroy, Jane Goldman, Cassandra Wales

Journal of Extension

Extension parent educators have gone to considerable effort to design parent education programs and materials that are responsive to the needs of a wide array of audiences. However, there is one group of parents whose needs have not been addressed: parents living and rearing children in affluent circumstances. Responses of 85 affluent mothers of young children documented strong interest in participating in parent education programs. Topics and items of child and family functioning that were of high interest to this group are described. Suggestions for program format are given.

Ohio Farmer Use Of The Pesticide Label, Steven C. Prochaska, Emma Lou Norland Feb 1998

Ohio Farmer Use Of The Pesticide Label, Steven C. Prochaska, Emma Lou Norland

Journal of Extension

Significant human and monetary resources are expended for pesticide training. A descriptive study was conducted to measure pesticide label use of Ohio certified private pesticide applicators (OCPPA). A sample size of OCPPA was used to provide .95 confidence interval for the population parameters. Internal and external validity threats were examined and controlled in the study. OCPPA perceive the label to be very valuable when pesticides are used and they are reading the pesticide label at least one time per year. There are no differences in pesticide label reading (use) of OCPPA by level of education or acres farmed.

An Epidemiologic Study Of Cystitis Among Muslim Women Attending An Out-Patients Clinic In Karachi, N Atiullah, F F. Fikree, I Husain

Community Health Sciences

Cystitis is considered to be one of the most common infections afflicting women of all age groups. It has been suggested that personal hygiene customs may influence the prevalence of cystitis. In this study, 130 women of child bearing age attending the out-patients clinic were interviewed in order to determine the frequency of cystitis and its associated risk factors including personal hygiene practices. Twenty seven percent of the women reported suffering from cystitis atleast once in the past, comparable to reported studies from the United States but higher than reported from other Muslim countries. Sixty-three percent of women reported their …

Shall The Twain Ever Meet?: On The Cancellation Of The June 1997 Meeting Of The Pope And The Patriarch Of Moscow, Ralph Della Cava

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

At the start of 1998, rumors - as well as denials - are once again flying of an imminent, historic meeting between the Pope of Rome and the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. To put that prospect into perspective, the present article explores the 10 June 1997 decision of the Holy Synod, the powerful interim governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, to cancel the previously scheduled encounter of the two church leaders later that month. It also examines differing explanations offered for that decision and the background to some of the continuing misunderstandings between the two confessions.

Biodegradation Of Pah Contaminated Soil And Sludge Using Non-Ionic Surfactants, Seema Narula Jan 1998

Biodegradation Of Pah Contaminated Soil And Sludge Using Non-Ionic Surfactants, Seema Narula

Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the most prevalent environmental pollutants contaminating a large number of industrial and Superfund sites. Low solubility and sorption to solid surfaces limit biodegradation rates of PAHs in the environment. Bioremediation of these compounds have been previously tested with partial success. In the present study, aerobic biodegradation of three PAHs (fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene) has been studied in shaker flasks, batch fermenter, and bioslurry reactor, in the presence of non-ionic surfactants. A mixed bacterial culture derived from both a refinery sludge and an activated sludge was used as the seed population in the degradation …

Proactive Technique For Workplace Chemical Exposure, James A. Duru Jan 1998

Proactive Technique For Workplace Chemical Exposure, James A. Duru

Theses

The rapid increase in the number and quantities of chemicals released into the environment has been accompanied by a lack of adequate pre-released testing for advance health outcomes. Chemicals which serve as feed stock to millions of industries all around the world to produce and process food, cosmetics, equipment, and energy to propel industries, automobiles, home heating and electricity have serious adverse health consequences. They are hazardous. These substances can explode, ignite, react and corrode. Adapting the definition of the international program on chemical safety, a "hazard" is a source of danger. This thesis proposes some proactive prevention techniques useful …

Introduction To Pollution Prevention Concepts In Freshman Chemistry Through Simulations And Hypermidia, Aniraban Bhaumik

Theses

As citizens of the 20th century, a key issue we all are aware of is degradation of the environment. In the interest of teaching the environmental issues to freshmen engineers, this study develops a computer aided learning/teaching (CAL/T) tool.

This CAL/T tool consists of Internet based multimedia courseware and intelligent simulations. The courseware assembles the fundamentals of chemistry associated with current environmental issues such as air pollution, stratospheric ozone layer depletion and environmentally sensitive or 'clean' manufacturing. The courseware targets early and comprehensive understanding of pollution prevention concepts with a focus on environmentally friendly manufacturing. The courseware includes: on-line text, …
