Characterisation Of Leishmania Isolates From Laikipia District, Kenya, N. N. Massamba, M. J. Mutinga, C. C. Kamau

Using cloned kDNA sequences from the reference strain of Leishmania tropica IC-067, we have screened leishmanial isolates from Laikipia District of Kenya and identified these isolates as L. tropica. One isolate, IC-331, from a rat (Rattus rattus) was typed as L. tropica. This is the first time that L. tropica has been isolated from a wild rodent in Kenya and thus the first indication that the disease caused by L. tropica might be a zoonosis. The leishmanial isolates, especially those of sandflies, display extensive heterogeneity, prompting a need for selecting local and/or regional reference strains to generate species-specific DNA probes …

Reconsidering The Hiv/Aids Prevention Needs Of Latino Women In The United States, Marcela Raffaelli, Mariana Suarez-Al-Adam
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The HIV/AIDS epidemic represents an ever-increasing threat to Latino populations in the United States, with women being most affected by this deadly disease. In this chapter, we explore the challenges Latino women face as they attempt to reduce their risk of sexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Our main interest lies in examining how the economic, cultural, and social realities of women's lives contribute to their risk of HIV infection and constrain their ability to reduce that risk. Because there is neither a cure for AIDS nor a vaccination to block HIV transmission, prevention of infection is …

Selenocysteine-Containing Proteins In Mammals, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield
Selenocysteine-Containing Proteins In Mammals, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield
Vadim Gladyshev Publications
Since the recent discovery of selenocysteine as the 21st amino acid in protein, the field of selenium biology has rapidly expanded. Twelve mammalian selenoproteins have been characterized to date and each contains selenocysteine that is incorporated in response to specific UGA code words. These selenoproteins have different cellular functions, but in those selenoproteins for which the function is known, selenocysteine is located at the active center. The presence of selenocysteine at critical sites in naturally occurring selenoproteins provides an explanation for the important role of selenium in human health and development. This review describes known mammalian selenoproteins and discusses recent …

Theses and Graduate Projects
The following study takes a snapshot of the MAL program, describing the experience of students between 1987 and 1996. Seven students were interviewed. These students were asked to describe what motivated them, what they experienced in the master's program and what they believed were the benefits of participation. "Why Leadership?" The qualities necessary for assuring leadership are nurtured by the interdisciplinary nature of this liberal arts program. Students gain self-confidence and courage to approach new situations. Students' commitment to leadership is nurtured by study in the MAL program. The history of the development of the Master of Arts in Leadership …
