A Protein Encoded By The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Is Expressed In Trigeminal Ganglionic Neurons Of Latently Infected Cattle And Interacts With Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 2 During Productive Infection, Yunquan Jiang, Ashfaque Hossain, Mariah Teresa Winkler, Todd Holt, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Despite productive viral gene expression in the peripheral nervous system during acute infection, the bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) infection cycle is blocked in sensory ganglionic neurons and consequently latency is established. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA. LR gene products inhibit S-phase entry, and binding of the LR protein (LRP) to cyclin A was hypothesized to block cell cycle progression. This study demonstrates LRP is a nuclear protein which is expressed in neurons of latently infected cattle. Affinity chromatography indicated that LRP interacts with cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (cdk2)-cyclin complexes or cdc2-cyclin complexes in …

Vincentian Studies

In 1877, Mariano Maller, the provincial of Spain, was sent on an extraordinary visitation to investigate alleged mismanagement of the American province. This translation of his report is continued from the first issue of volume 18. Maller describes the history of the houses he visits and assesses finances, works, individuals, and the province as a whole. The recommendations he left with the confreres at many of the houses are included. He also suggests naming a new provincial.

Depression In Mexican American Adolescence And Its Relations To Ethnic Identity And Self Esteem, Deborah Cohen Woloski

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study investigated incidence of depressive symptomatology, clinical depression, and suicidal ideation in a high school sample of 1751 Mexican-American adolescents. The relations of depression, as measured by the Diagnostic Scale for Depression-26 (DSD26), self-esteem, as measured by the abbreviated Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale and ethnic identity, as measured by the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) were analyzed. Results indicate that Mexican-American adolescents are at increased risk for depressive symptomatology and suicidal ideation. Results showed that there is no higher incidence of Major Depressive Episode (MDE) in Mexican-American adolescents but an increased risk for depressive symptomatology was found. Ethnic identity and …

Position Effect Takes Precedence Over Target Sequence In Determination Of Adenine Methylation Patterns In The Nuclear Genome Of A Eukaryote, Tetrahymena Thermophila, Kathleen M. Karrer, Teresa A. Van Nuland Oct 1998

Position Effect Takes Precedence Over Target Sequence In Determination Of Adenine Methylation Patterns In The Nuclear Genome Of A Eukaryote, Tetrahymena Thermophila, Kathleen M. Karrer, Teresa A. Van Nuland

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Approximately 0.8% of the adenine residues in the macronuclear DNA of the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila are modified to N6-methyladenine. DNA methylation is site specific and the pattern of methylation is constant between clonal cell lines. In vivo, modification of adenine residues appears to occur exclusively in the sequence 5′-NAT-3′, but no consensus sequence for modified sites has been found. In this study, DNA fragments containing a site that is uniformly methylated on the 50 copies of the macronuclear chromosome were cloned into the extrachromosomal rDNA. In the novel location on the rDNA minichromosome, the site was …

Interagency Lake Mead And Las Vegas Wash Monitoring Program: Standard Operating Procedures Manual, Bureau Of Reclamation, City Of Henderson Water Reclamation Facility, City Of Las Vegas Water Pollution Control Facility, Clark County Sanitation District, Nevada, Southern Nevada Water Authority

Publications (WR)

A number of agencies sample Lake Mead and the Las Vegas Wash on a routine basis at several locations. In order to share and properly interpret the data, the Bureau of Reclamation, Southern Nevada Water Authority and the three Wastewater Treatment Facilities (City of Las Vegas, Clark County Sanitation District and City of Henderson) formed a committee to examine sampling and analytical protocols and to share information with the goal of maximizing the data quality. The group first met in April 1997. It was agreed that an effort should be made to discuss and compare specific sampling and analytical techniques …

When Random Group Effects Are Cross-Correlated: An Application To Elderly Migration Flow Models, Karen S. Conway, Andrew J. Houtenville Oct 1998

When Random Group Effects Are Cross-Correlated: An Application To Elderly Migration Flow Models, Karen S. Conway, Andrew J. Houtenville

Center for Policy Research

Incorporating random group effects has proven important to making correct statistical inferences about factors that only vary across groups. We note that it is possible to have more than one random effect in models using cross-sectional data and that these random effects could be correlated, unlike in the typical panel data situation. Extending the standard multiple random effects model in this way is greatly simplified by using the two-step estimator we develop. Our application to an elderly migration flow model provides an intuitive example of cross-correlated random group effects and demonstrates the ease of our estimator, as well as highlighting …

What Juries Can't Do Well: The Jury's Performance As A Risk Manager, W. Kip Viscusi, Reid Hastie Oct 1998

What Juries Can't Do Well: The Jury's Performance As A Risk Manager, W. Kip Viscusi, Reid Hastie

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Can juries handle complex cases? One way to frame this question in behavioral science terms is to ask: What tasks can juries perform well and what tasks will they perform poorly? Our basic precept is that the legal system should ask juries to perform tasks that they are good at performing and should not require juries to carry out tasks that they cannot perform well. A second guiding theme in our approach to the issue of jury competency is that the most relevant, most useful analyses of jury performance are based on empirical observations and data, not on rational analyses …

Psychiatric Evidence In Criminal Trials: To Junk Or Not To Junk?, Christopher Slobogin Oct 1998

Psychiatric Evidence In Criminal Trials: To Junk Or Not To Junk?, Christopher Slobogin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article begins, in Part I, with a brief review of the past four decades" of psychiatric and psychological testimony in criminal trials (henceforth referred to simply as "psychiatric testimony"). Although this review cannot be called comprehensive, it does make clear that, contrary to what the popular literature would have us believe, psychiatric innovation is neither at an all time high nor the prevalent form of opinion testimony by mental health professionals. At the same time, such "nontraditional" expert opinion from clinicians, on those rare occasions when it does occur, has changed over the past few decades in both content …

Gender Types, Self-Esteem, And Academic Achievement In Middle School Students, Kimberly D. Noll Oct 1998

Gender Types, Self-Esteem, And Academic Achievement In Middle School Students, Kimberly D. Noll

Student Work

The relationship among gender typing, self-esteem, and academic achievement was investigated in 314 middle school participants. Participants were administered the Children’s Sex Role Inventory (CSRI) and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory-School Form (CSEI). The results of the CSRI and CSEI were compared to each participant's score on the California Achievement Test (CAT). Analysis of variance, chi-square, and Pearson product moment correlation's were utilized to assess relationships among the variables. Results indicated that, in the current sample, self-esteem and achievement were unrelated, aschematic characteristics were correlated with high achievement, girls exhibited higher achievement than boys, both boys and girls responded most frequently …

The Shifting Preemption Paradigm: Conceptual And Interpretive Issues, Karen A. Jordan Oct 1998

The Shifting Preemption Paradigm: Conceptual And Interpretive Issues, Karen A. Jordan

Vanderbilt Law Review

Recent decisions have signaled a subtle shift away from the Supreme Court's categorical approach to the issue of federal preemption of state law, and toward a preemption continuum in which the implied preemption theories may inform an express preemption analysis. Yet, the Court as a whole has avoided addressing the issues arising from the integration of the doctrines. In this Article, Professor Jordan explores some of these difficult issues. The conceptual issues concern when and how the implied theories should be used in an analysis involving an express preemption clause. She analyzes the Court's recent use of the implied theories …
