The Life Of The Sick Person, Carl E. Schneider Oct 1998

The Life Of The Sick Person, Carl E. Schneider

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

In The Practice of Autonomy: Patients, Doctors, and Medical Decisions (Oxford University Press, 1998), Professor Carl E. Schneider, '79, examines the Iaw of bioethics by looking at the lives of patients. He argues that bioethics has reached a point of paradox : Bioethicist increasingly seem to think patients have a duty to make their own medical decisions, but it is increasingly clear that many patients do not want to do so. The following excerpt from the chapter "The Reluctant Patient' is part of Schneider's attempt to show why patients may be reluctant to seize the gift of autonomy that the …

Tallgrass Prairie: Remnants And Relicts, Jane H. Bock, Carl E. Bock Oct 1998

Tallgrass Prairie: Remnants And Relicts, Jane H. Bock, Carl E. Bock

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The tallgrass prairie once was continuous throughout the eastern Great Plains. Now, scattered remnants remain. The distribution of some of the most interesting and socially valuable remnants occur along the base of the Rocky Mountains as relicts from a past era. When the species composition of these Colorado grasslands is compared with that of the eastern tallgrass prairie by an index of similarity, the relationship is clear, even though the climates of the two regions differ greatly. It is likely that this western tallgrass prairie is left over from past geologic times rather than the product of long distance seed …

Review Of Parallel Paths: Fiduciary Doctrine And The Crown-Native Relationship In Canada By Leonard Ian Rotman, Russel Lawrence Barsh Oct 1998

Review Of Parallel Paths: Fiduciary Doctrine And The Crown-Native Relationship In Canada By Leonard Ian Rotman, Russel Lawrence Barsh

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In 1984, Canada's Supreme Court stunned Ottawa by ordering the Department of Indian Affairs to compensate an Indian Reserve for the Department's mismanaging of a golf course development. Federal management of Indian lands under the Indian Act had previously been regarded as discretionary and unreviewable, but the Supreme Court threatened to hold Canada to a high standard of "fiduciary responsibility" in the exercise of its sweeping powers over Indian nations.

The implications of this landmark decision remain uncertain, however. Canadian courts are hesitant and inconsistent when they invoke the fiduciary principle, and Ottawa strenuously denies any application of fiduciary standards …

Morphogenesis Of Douglas Fir Buds Is Altered At Elevated Temperature But Not At Elevated Co2, Martha E. Apple, Melissa S. Lucash, David M. Olszyk, David T. Tingey Oct 1998

Morphogenesis Of Douglas Fir Buds Is Altered At Elevated Temperature But Not At Elevated Co2, Martha E. Apple, Melissa S. Lucash, David M. Olszyk, David T. Tingey

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Global climatic change as expressed by increased CO2 and temperature has the potential for dramatic effects on trees. To determine what its effects may be on Pacific Northwest forests, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii ) seedlings were grown in sun-lit controlled environment chambers at ambient or elevated (+4°C above ambient) temperature, and at ambient or elevated (+200 ppm above ambient) CO2. In 1995–1996 and 1996–1997, elevated CO2 had no effect on vegetative bud morphology, while the following unusual morphological characteristics were found with greater frequency at elevated temperature than at ambient: rosetted buds with reflexed and loosened outer …

Influence Of Physical Setting On Seagrass Landscapes Near Beaufort, North Carolina, Usa, Mark S. Fonseca, Susan S. Bell Oct 1998

Influence Of Physical Setting On Seagrass Landscapes Near Beaufort, North Carolina, Usa, Mark S. Fonseca, Susan S. Bell

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Field surveys were conducted in Core and Back Sounds, North Carolina, USA, to relate the physical setting of seagrass beds, as measured by a wave exposure index (REI), tidal current speed and water depth, to various measures of the sedimentary environment, spatial heterogeneity of seagrass distribution and measures of seagrass abundance. Seagrass beds in this area form patterns ranging from continuous to semi-continuous to widely dispersed, discrete patches across a gradient of increasing hydrodynamic activity. Tidal current speeds, exposure to waves and relative water depths revealed strong correlative evidence that physical processes influenced landscape-scale (50 x 50 m range with …

Depression And The Long-Term Risk Of Pain, Fatigue, And Disability In Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Judith Fifield, Howard Tennen, Susan Reisine, Julia Mcquillan Oct 1998

Depression And The Long-Term Risk Of Pain, Fatigue, And Disability In Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Judith Fifield, Howard Tennen, Susan Reisine, Julia Mcquillan

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Objective. To determine whether a previous episode of major depression leaves a “scar” that places previously depressed patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) at risk for experiencing high levels of pain, fatigue, and disability.

Methods. A cohort of 203 patients with RA was randomly selected from a national panel and interviewed by phone about pain, fatigue, depressive symptoms, disability, and history of major depression.

Results. Excluding patients who met the criteria for current major depression, patients with both a history of depression and many depressive symptoms at the time of the interview (dysphoria) reported more pain than those without current dysphoria, …

Values And Reward Preferences Of Prospective Engineers, S Bhargava Oct 1998

Values And Reward Preferences Of Prospective Engineers, S Bhargava

IIMB Management Review

A study conducted among students of a leading Indian institute of engineering and technology yielded useful and significant insights into the preferred rewards and motivators, personal values and background, attitudes and job prospects of prospective engineers, considered to be the cream of Indian youth and likely to assume positions of leadership in the fields of engineering and management. The findings of the study could help solve prevalent problems in designing organisational structures and reward systems and in improving the quality of engineering education and prospects for engineers in Indian organisations.

Evaluating Measures Of Family History Of Alcoholism: Density Versus Dichotomy, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Sharon A. Mudd, Frederic C. Blow, Elizabeth M. Hill Oct 1998

Evaluating Measures Of Family History Of Alcoholism: Density Versus Dichotomy, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Sharon A. Mudd, Frederic C. Blow, Elizabeth M. Hill

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Aims: Studies have used myriad measures of family history of alcoholism (FH) making it difficult to compare them directly. Commonly used FH measures partition samples into the well-known positive (FH+) and negative (FH–) dichotomy, although quantitative measures of density potentially provide more information. A standard FH measure would facilitate between-study comparisons. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a quantitative FH measure, called Family History Density (FHD), that has theoretical and practical advantages over currently used measures. Design: Logistic regression equations were estimated for FHD and six commonly used FH measures on alcohol dependence diagnosis and two measures of …

Of Communists And Anti-Abortion Protestors: The Consequences Of Falling Into The Theoretical Abyss, Christina E. Wells Oct 1998

Of Communists And Anti-Abortion Protestors: The Consequences Of Falling Into The Theoretical Abyss, Christina E. Wells

Faculty Publications

Part I of this article briefly reviews the legal and social context of Dennis and Yates. Parts II and III similarly review Madsen and Schenck in order to show potential parallels to the earlier communist decisions. Part IV further examines both Madsen and Schenck, demonstrating that, from a doctrinal standpoint, they are far removed from the earlier communist cases. Finally, Part V explains how the Court in Madsen and Schenck actually contributed to misconceptions or manipulation of its opinions. Specifically, Part V examines the Madsen and Schenck Courts' approaches to three of the more difficult doctrinal issues facing them--prior restraint, …

Benzodiazepine Self-Poisoning In Pakistan: Implications For Prevention And Harm Reduction, M M. Khan, Hashim Reza Oct 1998

Benzodiazepine Self-Poisoning In Pakistan: Implications For Prevention And Harm Reduction, M M. Khan, Hashim Reza

Department of Psychiatry

The pattern of all index admissions for benzodiazepine self-poisoning to a university hospital in Karachi, Pakistan are described. Of the 329 medication self-poisoning cases, 84% were benzodiazepine overdoses. Diazepam was the preferred drug in 69% of these cases, with majority ingesting between 20-30 tablets of 5 mg each, 44% bought the benzodiazepine over the counter (OTC) for the purpose of overdose. The preference for benzodiazepines over analgesics (as freely available) may be related to the motives underlying parasuicide acts and their popularity as 'sleeping pills' in Pakistan. Educating the 'chemist' and limiting the number of tablets dispensed at a time …
