Army Officer Evaluation Report: Past, Present, And Future, Jason Brownrigg Jan 1998

Army Officer Evaluation Report: Past, Present, And Future, Jason Brownrigg

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of performance evaluations of Army officers and the type of evaluation most useful for the future.

The Army has been using performance appraisals to evaluate the performance of officers since its inception over 200 years ago. Since World War II has the Army provided a required format for these evaluations.

The fom1at of these evaluations has changed over the years due to operational requirements along with the expansion and contract ion of the total Army structure. Also influencing the content of the evaluation reports are the current moral beliefs of the nations that …

Reefs As Contributors To The Diversity Of Epiphytic Algal Communities In Seagrass Meadows, B. R. Van Elvan Jan 1998

Reefs As Contributors To The Diversity Of Epiphytic Algal Communities In Seagrass Meadows, B. R. Van Elvan

Theses : Honours

It has recently become dogma that reef systems arc a source of diversity to algal epiphyte communities in adjacent seagrass meadows. While this theory had not been tested, it was often cited as the reason for unexpected results in algal studies and marine pollution monitoring. This study examined whether reefs do in fact contribute to the diversity of seagrass epiphytes by testing the effect of distance from reef on seagrass epiphyte communities. The study was conducted in the vicinity of Carnac and Garden Islands and Parmelia Bank, off the coast of Fremantle, Western Australia. Three habitat types were selected as …

Comparison Of Median Indicator Kriging With Full Indicator Kriging In The Analysis Of Spatial Data, Donna Hill Jan 1998

Comparison Of Median Indicator Kriging With Full Indicator Kriging In The Analysis Of Spatial Data, Donna Hill

Theses : Honours

In the earth sciences, and particularly in the mining of precious metals, data distributions are often strongly positively skewed. When making decisions on the potential profitability of a gold mine, for example, the high values of the distribution are of particular importance. Indicator kriging provides estimates of cumulative distribution functions from which grade tonnage curves may be calculated. Multiple or full indicator kriging requires a semivariogram to be modelled and a kriging system of equations to be solved for each cut off. This can be time consuming and modelling indicator semivariograms at high cut-offs may be difficult because of the …

The Efficacy Of A 'Spacer' In The Delivery Of Salbutamol For The Prevention Of Exercise-Induced Asthma, David G. Reed Jan 1998

The Efficacy Of A 'Spacer' In The Delivery Of Salbutamol For The Prevention Of Exercise-Induced Asthma, David G. Reed

Theses : Honours

Salbutamol is a Beta-2-agonist, commonly prescribed for the prevention and reversal of Exercise induced asthma (EIA). The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of a spacer device in the delivery of salbutamol for the prevention of EIA Thirteen confirmed asthmatic subjects (10 female and 3 male), completed 3 exercise test sessions consisting of three treatments a) Ventolin via MDI (metered dose inhaler) and placebo via spacer, b) Ventolin via spacer and placebo via MDI and c) Placebo via spacer and MDI, randomly administered utilising a single blind, cross--over design. Following treatment, subjects completed an asthmogenic physical challenge …

Dsp Implementation Of A Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Transmitter, Andrew Phoon Jan 1998

Dsp Implementation Of A Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Transmitter, Andrew Phoon

Theses : Honours

The aim of this project is to develop a DSP implementation of a QPSK transmitter. This transmitter is to process digital signals in real-time and modulate it with sinusoidal and cosinusoidal signals to produce the required QPSK waveform. This thesis is mainly divided into three sections. The first section deals with the theory of modulation. Phase shift keying, in particular binary phase shift keying, is explained in some detail, with references to the generation of quadrature phase shift keying. In the second section, a brief overview of the SIMULINK package from MATLAB is given, as simulations of ideal and nonideal …

Categorical And Coordinate Spatial Judgements In Face Recognition, Jill E. Russell Jan 1998

Categorical And Coordinate Spatial Judgements In Face Recognition, Jill E. Russell

Theses : Honours

The role of the cerebral hemispheres in processing spatial relationships is outlined in Kosslyn 's (1987) theory that states that there are two separate subsystems for processing spatial relations: one located in the left hemisphere (LHem) that is more efficient at processing categorical information, and one in the right hemisphere (RHem) that is more efficient at processing coordinate information. To test Kosslyn's theory, this study manipulated two IVs in a within-subjects design, task: categorical and coordinate; and visual field (VF): left and right Male and female face stimuli were presented in either the left visual field (LVF) to the (RHem) …

The Effectiveness Of Using Drama In Presenting Spiritual Material To School Students, Geoff Pollard Jan 1998

The Effectiveness Of Using Drama In Presenting Spiritual Material To School Students, Geoff Pollard

Theses : Honours

This thesis is concerned with determining the effectiveness of using drama in presenting spiritual material to school students. As a performer in schools I often wondered if the "magic" of the stage was what the students identified with or whether in addition they were also understanding and learning spiritual truths. As an undergraduate religious student I was exposed to the research of Goldman who concluded that Scripture teaching in Primary Schools should be minimised because he believed the students were incapable of understanding parables and miracles. I looked back on my school performance years and the warm reception given to …

Sense Of Effort Associated With Exercise In The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Karen E. Wallman Jan 1998

Sense Of Effort Associated With Exercise In The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Karen E. Wallman

Theses : Honours

Investigations into the mediators of effort sensation have indicated that central mechanisms related to corollary discharges may be responsible for an increased sense of effort during fatiguing isometric exercise. The role for central mediators for sense of effort have been objectively demonstrated through use of contralateral limb matching tasks. Subjects diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) often report prevalent fatigue associated with a greater sense of effort when involved in exercise. This study employed a fatiguing contralateral limb-matching task in order to determine if CFS subjects (n == 6) experienced an altered sense of effort associated with the task when …

The Participant's Perception Of The Contribution Of Lyengar Yoga To Their Health And Well-Being, Ann Dragon Jan 1998

The Participant's Perception Of The Contribution Of Lyengar Yoga To Their Health And Well-Being, Ann Dragon

Theses : Honours

To date little research has been conducted to substantiate the many anecdotal claims that yoga improves both physical and mental health. Berger and Owen (1992) demonstrated that yoga practice could enhance mood state. Mind-body exercise modalities, such as tai chi and yoga, potentially offer significant benefit in the areas of exercise rehabilitation and health promotion strategy (LaForge, 1997). Yoga is steadily gaining popularity amongst western culture with an increasing number of people participating in this mind-body exercise modality. Investigating the perceived contribution of regular yoga practice to health and well-being could uncover a number of positive 'indicators towards exercise adherence …

Aboriginal People With Disability And Their Use Of Advocacy: A Phenomenological Approach, E. A. Leipoldt Jan 1998

Aboriginal People With Disability And Their Use Of Advocacy: A Phenomenological Approach, E. A. Leipoldt

Theses : Honours

The reasons for an apparent low use of advocacy agencies in Perth by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have a disability, in a context of high vulnerability, were investigated. A high incidence of disability exists amongst this group. No previous research in this area has been conducted. Nine Aboriginal people with disability were interviewed about their experiences with regard to their disabilities and any need for advocacy. This study used a qualitative, phenomenological approach as its conceptual framework, including also, a minor quantitative component. The quantitative component consisted of a brief survey of Perth-based disability advocacy agencies. It …

Testing The Matching Hypothesis : Implementing A Minimal Stress Intervention By Matching Writing Task To Emotional Coping Style, Pamela D. Mcneill Jan 1998

Testing The Matching Hypothesis : Implementing A Minimal Stress Intervention By Matching Writing Task To Emotional Coping Style, Pamela D. Mcneill

Theses : Honours

The theory of inhibition and psychosomatic disease supports the concept that failure to express emotion is psychologically and physically stressful, and associated with long-term health problems. One aspect of this study was to investigate the discrepancy hypothesis proposing that specific emotional coping styles elicit patterns of discrepant self-report and physiological responses. The major focus of the study tested whether matching therapeutic writing tasks to specific emotional coping styles would significantly decrease stress and somatic symptoms, and whether mismatching such writing tasks to emotional coping styles would not decrease stress and somatic symptoms. Undergraduate students were identified as having an emotional …

How Do You Do Your Rage? : A Qualitative Investigation Into Contemporary Women's Experience Of Their Rage, Verena Homberger Jan 1998

How Do You Do Your Rage? : A Qualitative Investigation Into Contemporary Women's Experience Of Their Rage, Verena Homberger

Theses : Honours

Feminist researchers investigate women’s lives. This project is looking at a tiny thread embedded in a small section in the huge fabric of women's lives. The section is women’s capacity for violence, and the thread within it is women’s rage. This is a qualitative study of contemporary women experiencing and expressing their anger and rage. Discussions of violence within feminist literature have been largely restricted to accounts of male violence against women and children, and may have inadvertently endorsed the mainstream construction of femininity, which perceives rage in women to be an inappropriate emotion. In this project, I argue that …

Skill Acquisition And Transfer : The Effect Of Practice On Performance, Tracy Piani Jan 1998

Skill Acquisition And Transfer : The Effect Of Practice On Performance, Tracy Piani

Theses : Honours

This study was designed to examine the effect of amount of training on the specificity of skill acquisition and transfer. Within the theoretical framework of two contemporary theories of skill acquisition, Anderson's ACT" theory (1982, 1987), and Logan's Instance theory of automisation (1988, 1990), the study extends research by Greig and Speelman (in press) that demonstrated skills can be both general (i.e., can apply beyond the training experience) and specific (i.e., are limited to training experiences). The experiment was divided into training and transfer phases. The amount of practice in the training phase was manipulated across three experimental conditions, with …

Patients As Consumers: Making The Health Care System Our Own., David J. Lansky Jan 1998

Patients As Consumers: Making The Health Care System Our Own., David J. Lansky

Center for Policy Research

I ask you to think about our health care system. Think beyond the issues that are in front of us today: the anxiety we have about managed care, obtaining our own health care and paying for it, the survival of Medicare, and the unpredictable impact of government regulations. Think about our *health*, what we want from our health care system, what we're spending all this money for, and what we care about for ourselves and for our families. The challenge we face in the next five, ten, or fifteen years is to place the American health care system under the …

New Conundrums: Public Policy And The Emerging Health Care Marketplace, James R. Tallon Jan 1998

New Conundrums: Public Policy And The Emerging Health Care Marketplace, James R. Tallon

Center for Policy Research

There is a fundamentally new dynamic in American health care, one that has yet to be fully experienced but that threatens to leave a large portion of the American population without access to the quality health care they have received in the past. While the federal government has not completely abandoned the goal of assuring universal health care, a goal that dates back to the creation of Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s and even earlier, the mechanisms to pursue that goal have changed. The implicit contract between government and health care providers--mostly doctors and not-for-profit hospitals--under which subsidized care …

The Roles Of Transferrin Receptor In T Cell Activation, Allison Lorayne Bayer Jan 1998

The Roles Of Transferrin Receptor In T Cell Activation, Allison Lorayne Bayer

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Transferrin receptor (TfR) appears on activated T cells following interaction of the antigen-major histocompatibility complex (MHC) with the T cell receptor (TCR) and the resulting expression of IL-2 receptor (IL-2R). Previous work in the laboratory has demonstrated allograft prolongation following administration of anti-TfR monoclonal antibody (mAb). Studies in the area of cancer immunotherapy have shown that TfR blockade and modulation deprives the tumor of iron, which is essential for continued growth and proliferation, while TfR modulation results in poor T cell proliferation, respectively. This dissertation focuses on the hypothesis that modulation of T cell TfR expression is associated with altered …

Theory And Pedagogy In The Basic Course: A Summary From Spano And Hickson, Mark Hickson Iii Jan 1998

Theory And Pedagogy In The Basic Course: A Summary From Spano And Hickson, Mark Hickson Iii

Basic Communication Course Annual

I, too, have been pleased about the exchange of insights relative to the practical approach to teaching the basic course, as suggested by Spano (1996). While I agree with much of what Spano wrote, I am still concerned about the nature and status of some of the “theory” that has been developed and that is being developed in the discipline. To understand my overall view, however, one must review information about the nature of theory from meta-theoreticians, or critics of theory. And I think that we will find that there are some similarities between a practical view of theory and …

Regulation Of Lh Secretion By Progesterone In Heifers, Karol Fike, Brad Lindsey, Ellen G. M. Bergfeld, Freddie Kojima, Jorge Quintal, Eraldo Zanella, Eric Melvin, Michael Wehrman, James E. Kinder Jan 1998

Regulation Of Lh Secretion By Progesterone In Heifers, Karol Fike, Brad Lindsey, Ellen G. M. Bergfeld, Freddie Kojima, Jorge Quintal, Eraldo Zanella, Eric Melvin, Michael Wehrman, James E. Kinder

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Heifers experienced either a: 1) large magnitude of change in progesterone; 2) medium magnitude of change in progesterone; or 3) small magnitude of change in progesterone. During the 24 hours following the progesterone shift, heifers with the large magnitude progesterone shift had a greater LH pulse frequency than heifers with a medium or small magnitude of shift in progesterone. Despite the large or medium magnitude progesterone shift, LH pulse frequency did not differ from heifers in which a small change in progesterone occurred. We conclude that amount of progesterone in circulation is more important in regulation of LH secretion than …

Comparative Calf Grazing Of Corn And Soybean Residues, D. J. Jordon, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Mark Klemesrud Jan 1998

Comparative Calf Grazing Of Corn And Soybean Residues, D. J. Jordon, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Mark Klemesrud

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A grazing trial was conducted in the winter of 1996-97 to compare the feeding value of soybean stubble to that of cornstalks. Irrigated bean residues were stocked at 0.5 animals/acre, while irrigated corn residues were stocked at 1.2 animals/acre. Calves grazing cornstalks gained (0.17 lb/day) faster (P = .003) than calves consuming soybean stubble (-0.03 lb/day). In addition, calves grazing cornstalks remained in fields 14 days longer. Diet samples were collected on both corn and soybean residues. Ruminally fistulated steer calves grazing bean stubble consumed diets high in crude protein (12- 25%), but low in organic matter digestibility (40-46%). Calves …

Reproductive Rights Of Women: Construction And Reality In International And United States Law, Kimberly A. Jones Jan 1998

Reproductive Rights Of Women: Construction And Reality In International And United States Law, Kimberly A. Jones

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the disparity between the legal recognition of women's reproductive rights and the reality of their ability to exercise these rights. It explores how international and United States laws construct reproductive rights differently, but both fail to address the cultural, economic, and social barriers that prevent women from realizing these rights. The analysis underscores the need for states to take affirmative actions to dismantle these barriers and ensure that women can fully exercise their reproductive rights.

Reaching Beyond The Bars: An Analysis Of Prison Nurseries, Nicole Mauskopf Jan 1998

Reaching Beyond The Bars: An Analysis Of Prison Nurseries, Nicole Mauskopf

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that prison nurseries offer a viable solution to the challenges faced by incarcerated mothers and their children, addressing the detrimental effects of separation on both. It advocates for the implementation of prison nurseries to support maternal care and rehabilitation, while also highlighting the need for legal and policy reforms to ensure equitable treatment and protect parental rights.
