Development Of A Differential Assay To Selectively Measure Α-Amylase Isoenzymes., Miriam O'Connor Jan 1998

Development Of A Differential Assay To Selectively Measure Α-Amylase Isoenzymes., Miriam O'Connor

Theses

α-Amylase is a heterogeneous polypeptide, primarily found in the Salivary and Pancreatic glands, giving rise to two isoenzymes, namely Salivary- and Pancreatic-type Amylases. Total α-Amylase activity measurements are routinely carried out in hospital laboratories to aid in the diagnosis of diseases of the pancreas and in the investigation of pancreatic function in patients with severe abdominal pains. With the development and wide availability of modem chromogenic oligosaccharide substrates specific for Amylase, assays have become more sensitive, rapid and easier to use.

Differential Amylase Isoenzyme assays ware developed to distinguish isoenzyme levels. Several methods were developed for isoenzyme determination. Of these. …

Virtual Reality Modelling Of A Cnc Machine, Damian O'Sullivan

Theses

The increasing importance of training and upgrading skills has led to the use of new interactive technologies in the development of more effective training tools. Previous techniques for training Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine operators, while excellent for their time, varied from brief inexpensive tutorials to expensive on the job training. A CNC machine uses a computer to perform the functions of the machine using a part program stored in the memory of the computer. This thesis describes a Virtual Reality (VR) model of a CNC milling machine, implemented within a VR environment representing a CNC workshop. Its development and …

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor Jan 1998

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Child sexual abuse in Ireland has entered the public domain only in the last twenty years. This process was accelerated by a number of high profile cases which became public in the mid-1990s. Prior to the recent past, few references to child sexual abuse in Ireland exist. The fIrst written evidence is found in the penitentials of the early Christian period. Penance is specified for those that "misuse" children. Mention of adult child sexual relations is also found in the Brehon Law Texts. Historians, sociologists and anthropologists of childhood suggest that patterns of child rearing vary across time and place …

Water And Soil Chemistry In Agricultural Wetland Landscapes In The Prairie Pothole Region Of Eastern South Dakota, David E. Kringen Jan 1998

Water And Soil Chemistry In Agricultural Wetland Landscapes In The Prairie Pothole Region Of Eastern South Dakota, David E. Kringen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the nutrient filtering capability of four seasonal and two semipermanent wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region of eastern South Dakota. The wetlands were situated in two farming systems near Madison, SD. Wetlands were instrumented with observation wells arranged in two axes extending from the wetland border to upland sites. Nitrate-nitrogen and orthophosphate concentrations from wetland surface water and surrounding groundwater were determined on a two-week cycle throughout the 1994 and 1995 growing season using a Hach DR/2000 spectrophotometer. Results indicated that N03-N concentrations were higher in semipermanent wetlands (8.63 mg L·1) than seasonal wetlands (4.29 mg L" …

Twenty radiocollared elk ( 10 males, 10 females) were relocated by ground and aerial telemetry. Radiocollared elk were relocated two times/week, resulting in 1,595 relocations ( 410 ground, 1, 185 aerial). Coefficients of association (CA) for radiocollared cows averaged 0.005 during spring/summer 1996, 0.033 during spring/summer 1997, and 0.295 during falVwinter 1996. Coefficients of association for radiocollared bulls averaged 0.011 during spring/summer 1996, 0.015 during spring/summer 1997, and 0.075 during faIVwinter 1996. Three cow subherds …

Voluntary Intoxication As A Mitigating Circumstance During The Death Penalty Sentencing Phase: A Proposal For Reform Comment., Jeffrey A. Walsh Jan 1998

Voluntary Intoxication As A Mitigating Circumstance During The Death Penalty Sentencing Phase: A Proposal For Reform Comment., Jeffrey A. Walsh

St. Mary's Law Journal

When the State of Texas seeks the death penalty against a defendant, the trial court conducts a sentencing proceeding under Article 37.071 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. This proceeding determines whether the defendant will receive the death penalty. During deliberation, the jury must consider all mitigating evidence. The defendant may claim his voluntary intoxication as a mitigating factor. Under Tex. Pen. Code § 8.04(b), the court instructs the jury to consider evidence of voluntary intoxication only if it rendered the defendant temporarily insane. Although Article 37.071 calls upon juries to consider “all” mitigating evidence, a Section 8.04 instruction …

The Impending Wave Of Legal Malpractice Litigation - Predictions, Analysis, And Proposals For Change., Gary N. Schumann, Scott B. Herlihy Jan 1998

The Impending Wave Of Legal Malpractice Litigation - Predictions, Analysis, And Proposals For Change., Gary N. Schumann, Scott B. Herlihy

St. Mary's Law Journal

Attorneys tend to be viewed antithetically, at once both greedy and manipulative, but also respected and admired. Given this odd mixture of respect and disdain, attorneys are fortunate to have generally avoided being targets as potential defendants. Nevertheless, circumstances in Texas have changed, creating a new legal climate wherein attorneys may soon become defendants of choice. Attorneys in Texas are at a significantly greater risk of becoming the subject of a malpractice suit than they were in the past. Yet, simply because statistics indicate an increase in the number of malpractice claims, this does not mean more malpractice is being …

The React Security Belt: Stunning Prisoners And Human Rights Groups Into Questioning Whether Its Use Is Permissible Under The United States And Texas Constitutions Comment., Shelley A. Nieto Dahlberg Jan 1998

The React Security Belt: Stunning Prisoners And Human Rights Groups Into Questioning Whether Its Use Is Permissible Under The United States And Texas Constitutions Comment., Shelley A. Nieto Dahlberg

St. Mary's Law Journal

The Remote Electronically Activated Control Technology (REACT) belt infringes upon criminal defendants’ and prisoners’ fundamental rights; therefore, it cannot withstand judicial scrutiny under the United States and Texas Constitutions. This Comment attempts to address and answer issues regarding the REACT belt. The belt constitutes cruel and unusual punishment with the potential to deprive prisoners of their due process rights. The belt disrupts attorney-client communication and destroys a criminal defendant’s presumption of innocence. Furthermore, other alternatives provide effective means to prevent unruly prisoners from destroying the integrity of the courts. Part II of this Comment discusses how the belt works, and …

Asperger's Syndrome : A Review Of Literature, Tracy L. Gappa Jan 1998

Asperger's Syndrome : A Review Of Literature, Tracy L. Gappa

Graduate Research Papers

This paper contains a review of literature on Asperger's Syndrome (AS). This disorder is characterized by deficits in social interaction skills and communication skills (such as the absence of eye contact or facial expressions). Individuals with AS also insist on routines in behaviors, and pursue a relatively narrow range of interests and activities. Etiology is thought to be multifactoral. Studies have indicated that AS may be influenced by genetic factors as well as pre-, peri-, and postnatal trauma. The disorder is also more common among boys than girls.

In this paper, the general clinical features of AS are reviewed, with …

Hiv/Aids In Malaysia, Rokiah Ismail

Archival Material (1990s)

The population of Malaysia is 18.4 million, comprising 60% Bumiputra (or indigenous people which includes the aboriginal tribes, 10%, and 50% Malays), 28% Chinese, 8% Indians and 4% others. Eighty-five per cent of the population are aged 44 years and below. and 80.8% of the national workforce (defined as total employed individuals aged 15-64 years) are 15-44 years of age. With such a high percentage of the workforce being in the age group most affected by the HIV epidemic, a grave economic concern for the country is implied.

Non Toxic "Foul Air" Can Kill Jan 1998

Non Toxic "Foul Air" Can Kill

KIP Articles

This foul air article isn't about the resulting strong aroma the morning after your best friend's feast of garlic, baked beans and cabbage. 'Foul Air', sometimes called 'Bad Air', is an atmosphere which has a noticeable abnormal physiological effect on humans. Some concentrations of gases as can occur in caves, mines, sewers, drains, buildings, ships and other confined spaces can be lethal. There are many regulations governing workers exposure to various gas mixtures and concentrations, but emergency services personnel are often exposed to much higher concentrations than are permitted in the workplace. When we talk about dangerous gases, most people …

Quantifying Community Separation And Increase In Number Of Avian Species With Corresponding Increase In Habitat Complexity, An African Example, Douglas A. James Jan 1998

Quantifying Community Separation And Increase In Number Of Avian Species With Corresponding Increase In Habitat Complexity, An African Example, Douglas A. James

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The relationship between increase in faunal diversity and corresponding increase in habitat complexity was quantified using shrubland bird communities in western Africa. Vegetational characteristics were measured in circular plots around bird positions. Bird species were then arranged from grassy open habitats to dense shrubland and found to be separated into three distinct communities when subjected to Duncan's multiple range procedure in conjunction with discriminant functions analysis. Random samples classified with respect to bird species showed there were few species in the more abundant open habitats and a disproportionate number of species were packed into the less common but complex shrubby …

Lest We Forget: Buchanan V. Warley And Constitutional Jurisprudence Of The "Progressive Era", Richard A. Epstein Jan 1998

Lest We Forget: Buchanan V. Warley And Constitutional Jurisprudence Of The "Progressive Era", Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

The two principal papers in this collection are devoted to an analysis of one of the Supreme Court's landmark decisions of the Progressive era, Buchanan v. Warley. Both David Bernstein and Michael Klarman reveal ambitions that go beyond a single case, as each discusses in detail a large part of the Progressive era jurisprudence on race relations that set the stage for Buchanan v. Warley. A short introduction is hardly the place to quibble with these papers on points of detail. But it is the place to raise one neglected theme that requires fresh emphasis. The constitutional jurisprudence that led …

Market Lessons For Gatekeepers, Stephen J. Choi Jan 1998

Market Lessons For Gatekeepers, Stephen J. Choi

Faculty Articles

Market Lessons For Gatekeepers grows out of my earlier work on how intermediaries may work to alleviate problems of fraud in markets, as discussed in my articles on company registration (64 U. Chi. L. Rev. 567 (1997)) and securities fraud class actions (144 U. Penn. L. Rev. 903 (1996)). Where certifiers act as intermediaries between producers and purchasers in a market, contract alone, in many situations, should provide certifiers adequate incentives to signal product quality to purchasers and invest in their ability to screen accurately for different product qualities. Markets, however, may fail. In response, commentators have argued for legal …
