A Curriculum Design For The Incorporation Of Adventure Education Into Secondary School Health Education To Achieve Lifelong Wellness, Brenda J. Weis Jan 1998

A Curriculum Design For The Incorporation Of Adventure Education Into Secondary School Health Education To Achieve Lifelong Wellness, Brenda J. Weis

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This Alternate Plan Paper is a curriculum design for the incorporation of adventure education into secondary school health education to achieve lifelong wellness. Several schools have already established adventure-based programs in courses other than health education which have proven to be highly effective and successful (Hopkins and Putnam, 1993; Moore, 1986; Siedentop, Mand, and Taggart, 1986). For example, many physical education classes include outdoor adventure activities as a curricular alternative for conventional sports and games. However, at this time, there is no conclusive evidence that an adventure education program has been integrated into a health education curriculum.

Therefore, the intent …

Steroids And College Students : Ethical Considerations, Angie Dimmig Jan 1998

Steroids And College Students : Ethical Considerations, Angie Dimmig

Honors Capstones

In this paper, I wanted to be able to make some conclusions from the data that has been collected over the course of six semesters. I wanted to find out if males and females responded differently to questions on steroid use. More importantly, I wanted to know students in EPSE 200 really felt about steroid use- answers with some detail and feeling. The data was run using several oneway ANOVAs, along with spreadsheets of students' detailed answers to the five questions asked in the last semester recorded (Fall 1997). From the data run, we found that there are significant differences …

Parent Teacher Communication, Mindy Silbergleid Jan 1998

Parent Teacher Communication, Mindy Silbergleid

Honors Capstones

Research suggests that parental involvement in the educational system fosters intellectual and emotional growth in children. Parents, however, often feel threatened by the educational system; consequently, they do not play an active role in their child's educational experience. Because research suggests that it is in the best interests of the child for parents to playa more active role, teachers need to assume the responsibility of creating a learning environment that welcomes parental involvement. On-going parent/teacher communication becomes essential to this process. Based on observations of special education classes, surveys, and informal interviewing of both teachers and parents of children with …

Quixotic Attempt? The Ninth Circuit, The Bia, And The Search For A Human Rights Framework To Asylum Law, Shelley M. Hall Jan 1998

Quixotic Attempt? The Ninth Circuit, The Bia, And The Search For A Human Rights Framework To Asylum Law, Shelley M. Hall

Washington Law Review

The Ninth Circuit and the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) historically have disagreed about the application of human rights norms in many areas of asylum law. Although recent decisions by the BIA indicate more receptiveness toward the Ninth Circuit's broader approach, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 seeks to stifle judicial review in many areas of immigration law, including asylum. This Comment analyzes the potential impact of the law on the development of asylum jurisprudence and recommends areas for future dialogue between the Ninth Circuit and the BIA.

Recruitment And Selection: Finding The Best Candidate For The Company, Aaron T. Strcker Jan 1998

Recruitment And Selection: Finding The Best Candidate For The Company, Aaron T. Strcker

Theses

This thesis will focus on the recruitment and selection techniques used by organizations, while searching for candidates. and the legal issues surrounding recruitment and selection. In many organizations, the recruitment and selection of employees is a function that is not assigned a great deal of importance. However, organizations consistently talk of employees as being their biggest asset. With that statement in mind, it becomes increasingly important to uncover a recruitment and selection process that will find the best possible candidate.

The purpose of this thesis is to gather and analyze literature and research on recruitment and selection techniques and legal …

Phonological Awareness Training: Effects On Phonological Awareness And Reading Skills, Cassie Nelson Jan 1998

Phonological Awareness Training: Effects On Phonological Awareness And Reading Skills, Cassie Nelson

Masters Theses

Past research has established that phonological awareness skills are an important precursor to the development of reading (Jenkins & Bowen, 1994; Catts & Karnhi, 1986; Bradley & Bryant, 1978; Frith, 1981). Results of numerous phonological awareness training programs have been published (Ball & Blachman, 1988, 1991; Lundberg, Frost, & Petersen, 1988; Bradley & Bryant, 1983, 1985), however, none have compared the roles of professionals involved in teaching phonological awareness skills. Additionally, the effectiveness of various service delivery models has not been reported. This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of a phonological awareness training program on kindergarten children's phonological …

The Effects Of Habitual Physical Activity On Number Of Colds And Incidence Of Cold Symptoms, Katie Lynn Maniatis

Subjects were Eastern Illinois University students (N=535, aged 18-25). A survey was conducted which included questions inquiring about demographic information, physical activity habits, the number of colds contracted the month before the survey, and symptom number and severity. Data collection occurred between February 12th and March 1st, 1998. This particular time period was chosen for several reasons, including that student stress level should have been lower than at the beginning or end …

Development Of A Differential Assay To Selectively Measure Α-Amylase Isoenzymes., Miriam O'Connor Jan 1998

Development Of A Differential Assay To Selectively Measure Α-Amylase Isoenzymes., Miriam O'Connor

Theses

α-Amylase is a heterogeneous polypeptide, primarily found in the Salivary and Pancreatic glands, giving rise to two isoenzymes, namely Salivary- and Pancreatic-type Amylases. Total α-Amylase activity measurements are routinely carried out in hospital laboratories to aid in the diagnosis of diseases of the pancreas and in the investigation of pancreatic function in patients with severe abdominal pains. With the development and wide availability of modem chromogenic oligosaccharide substrates specific for Amylase, assays have become more sensitive, rapid and easier to use.

Differential Amylase Isoenzyme assays ware developed to distinguish isoenzyme levels. Several methods were developed for isoenzyme determination. Of these. …
