Rhodes Scholar: Defining An Opportunity, Kevin Diehl Jan 1998

Rhodes Scholar: Defining An Opportunity, Kevin Diehl

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

While amateur athletes pursue the Olympics to prove their athletic prowess, collegiate scholars try to quantify their academic success by winning a Rhodes Scholarship. Track athletes must post an acceptable qualifying time just to compete in the Olympic trials where they must earn a berth to the Olympics. Likewise, after receiving their university's formal endorsement, aspiring Rhodes Scholars have to portray their all-around qualities and dreams in an application and essay, hoping to earn the chance just to be selected for a state interview. If they are fortunate at this level, the applicants become one of two nominees from each …

For Black Leaders : A Study Of West African And African-American Leadership, Markita M. Boney Jan 1998

For Black Leaders : A Study Of West African And African-American Leadership, Markita M. Boney

Honors Theses

Ninety-two years ago WEB DuBois wrote, "The Problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the Color Line." This line is not just one experiences by blacks or merely a problem for the United States, but, rather, a problem the entire world faces. Many events in this century have supported his statement. However, I feel that the problem for Black America is the lack of intellectual and spiritual leadership within our community.

Ireland--The Healing Process, John Hume Jan 1998

Ireland--The Healing Process, John Hume

Fordham International Law Journal

As you are aware, the quarrel on our island has gone on for several centuries. Looking at the example of the conflict in Ireland, there are two mentalities in our quarrel - the Nationalist and the Unionist. The real political challenge to the Unionist mindset occurred when Nationalist Ireland essentially said: "Look, your objective is an honorable objective, the protection and preservation of your identity." Geography, history, and the size of the Unionist tradition guarantee that the problem cannot be solved without them, nor against them. If we can leave aside our quarrel while we work together in our common …

The Ideal Catalogue House: Mail-Order Architecture And Consumer Culture, 1914–1930, Evie T. Joselow Jan 1998

The Ideal Catalogue House: Mail-Order Architecture And Consumer Culture, 1914–1930, Evie T. Joselow

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores the mail-order house and its relation to aspects of consumer culture, establishing a context for understanding its popular appeal and its notable presence in the competitive housing market between 1918 and 1930. Fueled by a demand for housing, and widely promoted during a period of economic prosperity which ushered in an interest in consumerism associated with home ownership, the mail-order house, assembled from pre-cut lumber and sold by mail-order suppliers, represented an affordable and appealing means for consumers to acquire the aesthetic and material elements associated with the ideal house and home.

The dissertation articulates the popular …

"To Sew Or To Sow?” European Gender Images And Development In Rural Ecuador, Barbara Grunenfelder-Elliker Jan 1998

"To Sew Or To Sow?” European Gender Images And Development In Rural Ecuador, Barbara Grunenfelder-Elliker

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis examines the impact of a gender specific Swiss development project on Andean artisans women who struggle to intensify their craft production in the face of an increasing subsistence crisis characteristic among rural small producers around the globe. The selection of a project which has proven sustainable over a number of years allowed the author to conduct fieldwork in three different settings (1992-1995): among two hundred artisan women from eleven rural communities in Ecuador's Azuay province, who embroider table linen and apparel for export; among Ecuadorian and expatriate Swiss development specialists in Quito and Cuenca; and, to a limited …

Development Of An Adventist Community Services Center To Serve Navajo Residents Of Kayenta, Arizona, Dale A. Wolcott

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Problem

A decision had been made to establish a Seventh-day Adventist Community Services Center in Kayenta, Arizona, on the Navajo Indian Reservation, in connection with a church-planting initiative. Those in charge lacked experience and training in community services ministries and faced obstacles to implementation of the plan.

The Method

A combination of research and action was used to move the envisioned Community Services Center toward reality. Study of the Bible and related literature led to formulation of Scripture-based methodological principles. Demographic research and community needs assessment procedures were utilized to gain an understanding of the Kayenta community and especially …

Tourism And International Borders: Themes And Issues, Dallen J. Timothy Jan 1998

Tourism And International Borders: Themes And Issues, Dallen J. Timothy

Visions in Leisure and Business

Political boundaries are invisible, vertical planes that transect land and airspace, and they mark the limits up to which a political entity may exercise its sovereign authority. Most international boundaries have been marked on the ground in various ways as tangible lines separating societies and political systems from their neighbors. International borders have traditionally been viewed as barriers to various forms of human interaction. In fact, one of their primary purposes typically has been to hinder the flow of goods, people, and ideas between nations for ideological and economic reasons (2, 13).

Geographers have a long tradition of interest in …

Boundaries As Barriers And Promoters: Constructing The Tourist Landscapes Of Finnish Karelia, Anssi Paasi, Petri J. Raivo

Visions in Leisure and Business

Boundaries have become significant foci of interdisciplinary research during the last decade, but their roles have not been discussed very often in the context of tourism which, in fact, is crucially linked with many contemporary tendencies such as the opening of borders between formerly closed realms of the world or flows of capital and people. This paper analyses the historical and geographical roles of the FinnishRussian border in relation to tourism. The border was strictly guarded and almost entirely closed in Soviet times. It was a taboo that interested many foreign visitors to Finland. It interested the Finns as well, …

Cross-Border Trips By Canadians And Americans And The Differential Impact Of The Border, Livio Di Matteo Jan 1998

Cross-Border Trips By Canadians And Americans And The Differential Impact Of The Border, Livio Di Matteo

Visions in Leisure and Business

Same day automobile trips have been used as a barometer of cross-border shopping between Canada and the United States. The determinants of same day automobile crossborder trips by Canadians and Americans are examined using regression analysis and the results find that key determinants are lagged trips, per capita income, the real exchange rate and seasonal factors. The coefficient on lagged trips is larger for Canada than for the United States suggesting that, over time, Canadians adjust more rapidly to the desired number of trips than Americans. More intriguing is the fact that while income is positive for Canadian same day …
