Personality And Practice Settings, Glen K. Teramoto Jan 1998

Personality And Practice Settings, Glen K. Teramoto

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The field of physical therapy has had substantial growth this decade and is considered one of the best career choices. One reason for this growth is the implementation of physical therapy in new settings. Physical therapists are no longer restricted to the traditional hospitals and rehabilitation settings as choices. Today, physical therapists can choose to practice in more dynamic settings such as the public school system, sports acceleration and rehabilitation facilities, aqua-therapy, hippotherapy, and industrial facilities. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between personality traits and the practice settings for the University of …

Review Of The Oglala People, 1841-1879: A Political History By Catherine Price, Matthew G. Hannah Jan 1998

Review Of The Oglala People, 1841-1879: A Political History By Catherine Price, Matthew G. Hannah

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This book is a thorough history of official relations between the Oglala Lakota and the US Government during the mid-nineteenth century, with a special eye to the impact of these relations on the political structures that had been characteristic of Oglala society before significant white contact. The book's structure is straightforward: an introductory chapter draws on early ethnographic data and related scholarship to layout the political anatomy of Oglala society in the early nineteenth century, while the following six chapters cover Oglala-white relations from 1841 to 1879. Each of the six historical chapters not only recounts important events but also …

Review Of Fort Worth's Legendary Landmarks By Carol Roark, James Wright-Steely Jan 1998

Review Of Fort Worth's Legendary Landmarks By Carol Roark, James Wright-Steely

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Few substantial cities in the United States can boast of such an impressive aggregate of preserved pre-Second World War architectural wealth as Fort Worth, Texas. Downtown "Cow town" is largely intact, featuring block after block of continuous shop fronts, brick streets, and terra cotta details scraping the sky. Business and nightlife abound in this vintage precinct, whose century-old courthouse still houses county courts. A secondary downtown at the Stockyards Historic District is past its prime as a sprawling slaughterhouse but today is the thriving destination for herds of tourists. Even close-in historic neighborhoods remain vibrant, although their occupants long ago …

Review Of Roadside History Of Wyoming By Candy Moulton, Duane A. Smith Jan 1998

Review Of Roadside History Of Wyoming By Candy Moulton, Duane A. Smith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Wyoming is a large state with a history, geography, and reputation to match. It takes a person with a great deal of vim and vigor to tackle a Roadside History of Wyoming. Third generation Wyoming native, writer, and journalist Candy Moulton took on the task with an enthusiasm and interest that comes out in almost every page of the book.

She covers the whole state, divided into five parts, with a mixture of history, legend, stories, and undoubted appreciation for her beloved Wyoming. The reader will meet a wide cast of individuals who have traveled through or lived there. …

Review Of Ghost Settlement On The Prairie: A Biography Of Thurman, Kansas By Joseph V. Hickey, James R. Shortridge Jan 1998

Review Of Ghost Settlement On The Prairie: A Biography Of Thurman, Kansas By Joseph V. Hickey, James R. Shortridge

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

To label a book as local history is often to discredit it as solid scholarship. No one should make this mistake in the case of Joseph Hickey's fine study of a tiny settlement in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Hickey, in fact, displays here a remarkable combination of deep local knowledge and theoretical underpinnings. His work sheds important light on what William Least Heat-Moon has called "the perils of excessive individualism," that most American of processes in which community life is gradually undermined by the forces of large-scale capitalism. Concurrently, Hickey also provides critical new information on the evolution of …

Giants On The Plains: Grain Elevators And The Making Of Enid, Oklahoma, Blake Gumprecht Jan 1998

Giants On The Plains: Grain Elevators And The Making Of Enid, Oklahoma, Blake Gumprecht

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Driving west from Interstate 35 on US Highway 64, the grain elevators of Enid, Oklahoma, first become visible when the town is still twenty miles away. Disappearing and reappearing behind gently rolling hills, it is initially unclear what they might be. Even when they are little more than white specks on the horizon, they are plainly too large and numerous to represent some distant farmstead. They are too long to suggest the form of a far-off skyscraper. Little by little they grow larger in the windshield, and as the stony hills begin to give way to the wheat-covered plains of …

Humanitarians On The Frontier Examples From Northeastern Logan County, Oklahoma Territory, Leslie Hewes Jan 1998

Humanitarians On The Frontier Examples From Northeastern Logan County, Oklahoma Territory, Leslie Hewes

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Scholars have studied the frontier of Euro-North American settlement from a number of perspectives. James C. Malin and Allen G. Bogue, for example, have examined the turnover of population in the newer parts of the United States. Walter Prescott Webb considered the Great Plains a strange kind of country for most of its pioneers, branding them as woodsmen out of place in the western part of the great interior grassland. Paul W. Gates has emphasized speculation and an incongruous land system as marking the American new lands, while James K. Hastings has recognized cooperative endeavor, a kind of sharing, as …

Juvenile And Criminal Justice Systems' Responses To Youth Violence, Barry C. Feld Jan 1998

Juvenile And Criminal Justice Systems' Responses To Youth Violence, Barry C. Feld

Articles

Within the past decade, nearly every state has amended its juvenile code in response to perceived increases in serious, persistent, and violent youth crime. These changes diminish the jurisdiction of juvenile courts as judicial decisions and statutory changes transfer more youths from juvenile courts to criminal courts so that young offenders can be sentenced as adults. Amendments to juvenile sentencing laws increase the punitiveness of sanctions available to juvenile court judges. Other strategies attempt to "blend," or merge, juvenile and criminal court jurisdiction and sentencing authority over violent young offenders. These "get tough" policies affect the numbers and types of …

Polar Field Tent Shelters And Well-Being Of Users, James Potter, X. Winston Yan, Nathan S. Krug, Karl C. Kuivinen, Marijane E. England Jan 1998

Polar Field Tent Shelters And Well-Being Of Users, James Potter, X. Winston Yan, Nathan S. Krug, Karl C. Kuivinen, Marijane E. England

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Polar research teams often spend extended periods of time away from base stations, living and working in remote field camps of portable tent shelters. This article reports on a study of the design and use of portable field tent shelters being deployed in Antarctica and other circumpolar areas. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the shelters on health and well-being of their users from an environment-behavior perspective. Preliminary analysis indicates that although the design and use of field tent shelters were generally satisfactory, there are areas in which the shelters had some adverse bearing on …
