The Good Friday Agreement: An Overview, Bertie Ahern Jan 1998

The Good Friday Agreement: An Overview, Bertie Ahern

Fordham International Law Journal

On 22 May, it received the overwhelming endorsement of the people of Ireland in referendums, North and South. For the first time, a precise mechanism has been defined - and accepted by the British Government - by which a united Ireland can be put in place, by the consent of Irish people and that alone. This involves setting up a new North-South Ministerial Council to develop consultation, co-operation and action within the island of Ireland on matters of mutual interest and establishing, as a start, at least six implementation bodies operating on a cross-border or all-island basis. The people, North …

God's Designs: The Literature Of The Colonial Revival Of Religion, 1735-1760, Allen C. Guelzo

In December of 1990, after the completion of a section on Jonathan Edwards at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association in New York City, a dozen or so of mostly younger scholars of Jonathan Edwards swept around the corner from the convention hotel and settled themselves down to a staggering repast at a posh north Italian restaurant. In the midst of some very un-Edwardsean consumption, I offered a question to everyone around the table: What is the most important book which you've ever read on the Great Awakening? With only one exception, the Young Edwardseans gave the palm …

Interdisciplinary Natural Resource And Environmental Policy Program At Utah State University, Joanna Endter-Wada, Richard S. Krannich

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The Natural Resource and Environmental Policy Program at Utah State University (USU) is an interdisciplinary, graduate, educational program that has been developed since the fall of 1991. The program administers and awards a graduate certificate, sponsors invited speakers, oversees student policy presentations, and facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration. The program has earned broad, campus-wide support and participation. All eight colleges at USU supported approval of the certificate program in 1994. At present, sixteen academic units are represented on its Faculty Advisory Committee, which oversees and makes decisions about the program. Fifty graduate students from fourteen academic units have pursued the Interdisciplinary Certificate …

Natural Resource Management - The Creation Of A New Interdisciplinary Major At The University Of Delaware, Steven E. Hastings, Karen Roth Aniunas Jan 1998

Natural Resource Management - The Creation Of A New Interdisciplinary Major At The University Of Delaware, Steven E. Hastings, Karen Roth Aniunas

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The College of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Delaware has an excellent faculty and physical facility well positioned to educate students for managing the world's natural resources (air, land, water, pants, animals, etc.) into the next century. The college offers a variety of traditional, discipline specific undergraduate majors in five academic departments. A faculty committee worked for more than two years to formulate a new major with an interdisciplinary approach. The result is a new major, Natural Resource Management, which began admitting freshman students in the Fall of 1997. This paper will discuss the creation of the Natural Resource …

Natural Resource Education: Getting Forest Products Workers Into The Flow, Mark D. Reed, Jeffry C. Hino, Elizabeth A. Littlefield, Edward C. Jensen Jan 1998

Natural Resource Education: Getting Forest Products Workers Into The Flow, Mark D. Reed, Jeffry C. Hino, Elizabeth A. Littlefield, Edward C. Jensen

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The forest products industry employs over 1.4 million people in the U.S.; it ranks among the top ten manufacturing employers in 46 states. Surprisingly, a recent survey of U.S. forest products workers revealed substantial ignorance and misperceptions about forests and forestry issues. Despite this, few educational programs are targeted at this audience. The Oregon Forest Resources Institute has teamed up with Oregon State University's Forestry Media Center to fill this gap with Project FLOW (Forestry Learning Opportunities for Workers). Phase one of this project, completed in summer 1997, analyzed current status of forestry educational opportunities for forest workers in Oregon: …

Gender Issues In Natural Resources Management: Preparing For Diversity In The Work Place, Helen Ruth Aspaas, Robert Schmidt, Olive Kyampaire

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Women comprise a growing number of undergraduate students who are pursuing degrees in the natural resource disciplines. Likewise, women represent an ever increasing percentage of natural resource professionals. Gender issues thus become a relevant attribute of training for both women and men so that awareness may lead to improved, stable and productive working environments.

Spatial Information Technologies In Geographic Education, Melinda J. Laituri Jan 1998

Spatial Information Technologies In Geographic Education, Melinda J. Laituri

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

This paper describes a project focusing on the need to enhance communication and understanding between higher education and the K-12 system through the use of spatial information technologies, specifically geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), remotely sensed data (RS) and the Internet. The project has developed materials and identified data through an interactive exchange between Colorado State University graduate students studying information technology for resource management and K-12 teachers. The outcome of the project is twofold: 1) to help K-12 students meet content standards of geography: “how to use maps and other geographic representations, tools and technology to …

Integrated Education In Natural Resource Management: Connecting The University To Needs Around It Through Partnership, Francine B. Patterson, David B. Longbrake Jan 1998

Integrated Education In Natural Resource Management: Connecting The University To Needs Around It Through Partnership, Francine B. Patterson, David B. Longbrake

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Education has long been faced with the notion that what they do bears no relation to the world outside academe. The public and private sector have often confronted the new graduate who needs to get a footing in the "real world" and learn how to apply what he has studied. The best solution for higher education is to produce students who both know their subject matter and can apply it while a student.

Graphical Surface-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (Svat) Model As A Pedagogical And Research Tool, Robert R. Gillies, Toby N. Carlson, David A.J. Ripley Jan 1998

Graphical Surface-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (Svat) Model As A Pedagogical And Research Tool, Robert R. Gillies, Toby N. Carlson, David A.J. Ripley

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

This paper considers, by example, the use of a Surface-Atmosphere-Vegetation-Transfer (SVAT), Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) model designed as a pedagogical tool. The goal of the computer software and the approach is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of communicating often complex and mathematical based disciplines (e.g., micrometeorology, land surface processes) to the non-specialist interested in studying problems involving interactions between vegetation and the atmosphere and, in the nature of interactions rather than a description of the components. Topics are addressed within a Socratic framework using a scenario system based approach: As an example of this, the interactions between a vegetation …

Justice Blackmun And The Good Physician: Patients, Populations, And The Paradox Of Medicine, Ann Alpers Jan 1998

Justice Blackmun And The Good Physician: Patients, Populations, And The Paradox Of Medicine, Ann Alpers

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Justice Blackmun made unique contributions to law and medicine. In particular, he had a vision of the relationship between doctors and patients that respected both the professional integrity of the physician and the autonomy of the patient. Examination of several of Justice Blackmun's opinions yields a nuanced view of the complex ties between professional care givers and the patients whom they serve. In particular, the Justice valued maintaining the confidentiality of medical information, respecting the role played by allied health professionals in providing comprehensive care to patients, and ensuring that patients gave informed consent to medical care. Most important, Justice …

Aids As A Chronic Illness: A Cautionary Tale For The End Of The Twentieth Century, Linda C. Fentiman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The result of the monumental shifts in the structure and financing of health care delivery is that at the very time that medical innovations have made possible significant improvements in the quality and quantity of life for people with chronic illnesses, those who are responsible for paying for Americans' health care, in government and the private sector, seem to have finally said “Enough! We must cut costs, and cut them dramatically, and the simplest, most direct way of cutting costs is to deny coverage for certain kinds of treatments and certain kinds of illnesses.” People with HIV and AIDS are …

Single-Parent Latinas On The Margin: Seeking A Room With A View, Meals, And Built-In Community, Laura M. Padilla Jan 1998

Single-Parent Latinas On The Margin: Seeking A Room With A View, Meals, And Built-In Community, Laura M. Padilla

Faculty Scholarship

This article considers the unique challenges of single parent Latinas and and a different way of viewing concerns of single parents. This alternative paradigm uses a holistic approach to the problems I had been pondering, acknowledging their interconnectedness, rather than artificially segmenting them into disjointed issues. I visualized a multi-pronged approach to Latina mothers' many concerns, based on a cohousing model, as modified for the needs of a low-income, racially distinct population of single-parent Latinas. It describes co-housing and proposes that this housing model be more broadly accessible through land use changes and greater acceptance of housing beyond single family …

The Kingdom, The Power, & The Glory: The Millennial Impulse In Early American Literature: General Introduction, Reiner Smolinski , Editor Jan 1998

The Kingdom, The Power, & The Glory: The Millennial Impulse In Early American Literature: General Introduction, Reiner Smolinski , Editor

Electronic Texts in American Studies

This anthology, The Kingdom, The Power, & The Glory: The Millennial Impulse in Early American Literature, seeks to redress some of the problems of access to texts of early American literature by providing a thematic approach to one of colonial America’s most trenchant ideologies: the rising glory of America. The selections included represent a wide spread of authors and texts that discuss America’s place in the millenarian cosmologies from the colonial to the Federalist period (c. 1600-1800). The texts address such issues as the great migration, the transformation of the howling wilderness into an agricultural Eden, the jeremiad, King Philip’s …

The Kingdom, The Power, & The Glory: The Millennial Impulse In Early American Literature -- Questions For Discussions, Research, And Writing, Reiner Smolinski , Editor

Electronic Texts in American Studies

The following questions are designed to help each student focus on crucial issues in each text during the initial reading process, stimulate class discussion, and suggest essay topics for term papers. For the most part, the answers to these questions require no other reading than the General Introduction and close analysis of the selections themselves. Nevertheless, each set of question is followed by a brief list of secondary sources taken from the Selected Bibliography to accommodate the documentation of research papers. The blank spaces below each question allow for brief written responses and brainstorming exercises to outline research papers.

Turning To Earth: Paths To An Ecological Practice, Florence Marina Schauffler Jan 1998

Turning To Earth: Paths To An Ecological Practice, Florence Marina Schauffler

Doctoral Dissertations

In highly developed countries like the United States, conventional approaches to environmental change emphasize systemic measures such as policies and regulations. Yet many intractable environmental problems appear to be rooted in the perspectives and practices of individual citizens. Efforts to restore 'outer ecology' may depend, therefore, on transforming 'inner ecology'--the constellation of spiritual and moral values that guide action. This dissertation examines the inner dimensions of ecological change, demonstrating how individuals redefine their relation to earth through a process of 'ecological conversion.'.

In assessing the dynamics of conversion, this work relies primarily on the testimony of six 20th-century American writers: …

Phylogenetic Relationships Of Polemoniaceae: Inferences From Mitochondrial Nad1b Intron Sequences, J. Mark Porter, Leigh A. Johnson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The most recent assessments of phylogenetic relationships and diversification in the flowering plant family Polemoniaceae have relied on nuclear ribosomal and chloroplast DNA sequences. We employed the mitochondrial nad1b intron, located within the second transcription unit of the first subunit of NADH dehydrogenase, for phylogenetic inference. Maximum parsimony analysis of these data provided evidence that Polemoniaceae are more closely related to families Fouquieriaceae, Diapensiaceae, Styracaceae, and Primulaceae than to families of the Solananae, where it has been classified. Fouquieriaceae are inferred to be the sister group of Polemoniaceae; however, when indels are treated as additional characters and given twice the …
