Vcu Voice (1998-04-06)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

NEWSLETTER YOSEMITE'S POETS: JOHN MUIR'S INFLUENCE ON THE CAREER OF ANSEL ADAMS by Joshua Greenfield, Master's Candidate at Hunter College, City University of New York John Muir was one of those exceptional men whose writing touches us deeply, revealing the world which is potentially avail- Wble to us all. The quality of Muir's vision has undeniably colored my own moods and response and clarified the statements of my camera. Ansel Adams Mm Muir and Ansel Adams were the two great poets of Yosemite H alley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. As novelist Wallace fltegner pointed out in a 1985 memorial …

State Of Tampa Bay 1997, Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (Tbrpc), Agency On Bay Management
Reports
This, the eleventh "State of Tampa Bay" report, documents many of the programs and projects of 1997 relating to Tampa Bay. Prepared in accordance with the rules of the Agency on Bay Management and funded by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, it includes a summary of the issues addressed by the Agency this year.
This year's "State of Tampa Bay" report includes summaries of many important projects. It is clear from the diversity of reports that Tampa Bay is receiving the attention it deserves from all quarters. Public and private sectors alike are working as never before to ensure …

Tallgrass Prairie Remnants Of Western Iowa Cemeteries., Carrie L. Menges-Schaben
Student Work
Tallgrass prairie remnants situated in eight western Iowa cemeteries were sampled during 1995 and 1996 to compare both the frequency and season of mowing and burning on plant species composition. Dominant, native tallgrass prairie species, such as big bluestem (Andropha gerardii), Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans) and leadplant (Amorpha canescens), generally showed a significant increase with burning, whether mowed or not. Mowing, however, adversely affected other species, including flower spurge (Euphorbia corollate) and porcupine grass (Stipa spartea), whether burned or not. Non-native species, in particular smooth brome (Bromus inermis) increased with mowing and the absence of fire. Overall, my study suggests …

A Generic Multi-Electrode Automated/Semi-Automated Field Resistivity System, Douglas D. Werkema
A Generic Multi-Electrode Automated/Semi-Automated Field Resistivity System, Douglas D. Werkema
Masters Theses
Geophysical field exploration using electrical resistivity typically employs the use of four electrodes which are progressively relocated to positions that differ from a few meters to hundreds of meters. Consequently, field operations are tiresome and often lead to imprecise locations of electrodes and poor data quality. This project develops an automated field resistivity system.
This automation of resistivity measurements is accomplished by using multiple sets of field electrodes, a programmable switch box, remotely controlling the acquisition instrument and digitally storing the results. Controlling the process is the Acquisition Control©software, for Windows 95© .The prototype switch box has …

A Comparison Of Astm Standard E1599-94 And A Site Assessment Project Located In North Las Vegas, Kenneth Anthony Katsuda
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This document provides a comparison of ASTM E-1599-94 Standard for a petroleum release and the procedures performed on a site assessment project in North Las Vegas. The major elements of a site assessment are thoroughly discussed in this document. They elements consist of the Initial Site Assessment, On-Site Delineation, Off-Site Delineation, Sampling/Analysis, and Site Assessment Methodologies.
The data was obtained through extensive research, utilizing reference documents,on-site experience, and the knowledge of Keith Stewart of Stewart Environmental.
After reviewing and comparing the data of my research, the procedures applied to the North Las Vegas Site (NLVS) were quite similar to the …
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design: An Analysis Of The Boulevard Mall, Kenneth Mac Leod
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design: An Analysis Of The Boulevard Mall, Kenneth Mac Leod
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Many case studies have been published that report a decrease in crime as a result of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). Although methodologies and results of some studies have been questioned, there is agreement that the designed environment can influence human behavior.
Data in this study were accumulated by the investigation of a local mall. Mall management and head of security reported a decrease in all types of crime after improving and adding security measures for customers and store employees. My hypothesis was the mall provided a high number of CPTED features which would result in a low number …
Decision-Making For Prairie Wetland Restorations, Susan M. Galatowitsch, Arnold G. Van Der Valk, Rachel Budelsky
Decision-Making For Prairie Wetland Restorations, Susan M. Galatowitsch, Arnold G. Van Der Valk, Rachel Budelsky
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Assessments of wetland restorations in the prairie region are not done routinely and no accepted assessment framework exists. Wetland assessment protocols in the U.s. have varied over time from those emphasizing social significance to those attempting to quantify functions of wetlands from hydrogeomorphic considerations. A conceptual framework for restoration decision-making is presented that is based on optimizing wetland restoration success at both the landscape and site scales. This framework uses societal concerns, knowledge of factors that limit ecosystem recovery, and data on losses of different types of wetlands locally and regionally to establish restoration goals and guide site selection. These …
