Charge Exchange From D(N = 2) Atoms To Low-Z Receiver Ions, R. Hoekstra, H. Anderson, F. W. Bliek, M. Von Hellermann, C. F. Maggi, Ronald E. Olson, H. P. Summers Dec 1998

Charge Exchange From D(N = 2) Atoms To Low-Z Receiver Ions, R. Hoekstra, H. Anderson, F. W. Bliek, M. Von Hellermann, C. F. Maggi, Ronald E. Olson, H. P. Summers

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

To elucidate the influence on charge-exchange spectroscopy of metastable deuterium donors, the corresponding cross sections for state-selective charge transfer have been calculated using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. The cross sections for electron capture from D(n = 2) by fully stripped low-Z ions are contrasted with those for capture from ground state D to indicate the importance of metastable donors. Using the new data, effective emission coefficients for the spectral lines of H-like light impurities used in charge-exchange spectroscopy have been calculated. These results incorporate the presence of excited n = 2 donors in the beam and apply to …

Study On The Estimation And Control Of A Liquid Composite Molding Process, Dennis Sourlas, Susmito Naha, Gary Patterson, Richard Parnas Dec 1998

Study On The Estimation And Control Of A Liquid Composite Molding Process, Dennis Sourlas, Susmito Naha, Gary Patterson, Richard Parnas

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An on-line nonlinear receding horizon control algortithm is employed in order to achieve setpoint tracking targets in the context of liquid composite molding processes. The robustness of this control strategy against process-model deviations is tested. Finally, recursive parameter estimation is employed as a means of actively enhancing the performance of the process control algorithm. © 1998 AACC.

Nonanalytic Magnetization Dependence Of The Magnon Effective Mass In Itinerant Quantum Ferromagnets, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Andrew J. Millis, Thomas Vojta Dec 1998

Nonanalytic Magnetization Dependence Of The Magnon Effective Mass In Itinerant Quantum Ferromagnets, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Andrew J. Millis, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The spin-wave dispersion relation in both clean and disordered itinerant quantum ferromagnets is calculated. It is found that effects akin to weak-localization physics cause the frequency of the spin waves to be a nonanalytic function of the magnetization m. For low frequencies Ω, small wave vectors k, and m→0, the dispersion relation is found to be of the form Ω=const x m1-αk2, with α = (4-d)/2 (2 < d < 4) for disordered systems, and α = (3-d) (1 < d < 3) for clean ones. In d = 4 (disordered) and d = 3 (clean), Ωαm ln (1/m) k2. Experiments to test these predictions are proposed.

Methodology And Theory Building In Mis Research, Nancy Lightner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah Dec 1998

Methodology And Theory Building In Mis Research, Nancy Lightner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper reports on the stage of maturity of MIS research according to the McGrath (1979) model, as evidenced by the theory building occurring in two top MIS research journals. While MIS as a discipline continues to grow, its development depends on establishing a cumulative tradition of good research (Keen 1980). Of the published papers surveyed that are relevant to theory building, 81% of them relate to theory development, while 18% address theory testing. Of the papers involving data collection, more than half use field studies as the methodology. In order to advance MIS as a mature field, it is …

The End Of The Market: A Psychoanalysis Of Law And Economics, Jeanne L. Schroeder Dec 1998

The End Of The Market: A Psychoanalysis Of Law And Economics, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

The perfect market is the end of all actual markets - it is their ideal form. In normative economics, actual markets are the means of achieving the end or ideal of the perfect market. But this means that to achieve a perfect market would result in the end of all actual markets. Despite the centrality of the ideal of the perfect market in the subset of law and economics scholarship based on classical price theory, there is surprisingly little literature on its parameters. In this Commentary, Professor Schroeder examines this literature in order to explicate the nature of this ideal. …

Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee Dec 1998

Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee

Theses

This thesis is an exploration of possibilities of the translation of Chinese characters into furniture. It is not just the two dimensional image of the character that I wish to interpret into three dimensions, but I intend that the functions and uses of the furniture are to be the meaning of the word. The final pieces are intended to be recognized as to their meaning by anyone literate in Chinese character forms. Furniture that has both form and meaning will create new possibilities for furniture's role in the environment by having this extra dimension.

Does The Volatility Of Exchange Rate Hamper Hong Kong's Domestic Exports?, Ching Yi, Bonita Leung Dec 1998

Does The Volatility Of Exchange Rate Hamper Hong Kong's Domestic Exports?, Ching Yi, Bonita Leung

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Since the collapse of the Bretton Woods system and the advent of the floating exchange rate regime in the spring of 1973, there has been a great concern over the volatility of exchange rate and its impacts on the volume of international trade. This paper aims at examining whether the volatility of exchange rate hampers Hong Kong’s domestic exports. In this paper, I use the quarterly data from the first quarter of 1984 to the third quarter of 1997 and select five major trading partner countries of Hong Kong to reflect three diverse regions: North American, Europe and the Pacific …

Keys To Building Successful Training Programs For Hispanic Family Day Care Providers, Marisa B. Warrix, Margarita Bocanegra

Journal of Extension

Hispanic women have shown the most rapid gains in labor force participation since the 1980s. Ohio State University Extension in Cleveland, Ohio targeted training programs to Hispanic family day care providers. The article outlines critical factors for success. They include understanding the importance of Hispanic culture, values, and attitudes; becoming familiar with personalism and familism, using day care as an employment strategy for Hispanic women, and developing culturally relevant nutrition lessons.

The Stork's Nest Program Benefits At-Risk Mothers And Their Babies, Swarna Viegas, Connie Betterley Dec 1998

The Stork's Nest Program Benefits At-Risk Mothers And Their Babies, Swarna Viegas, Connie Betterley

Journal of Extension

This article describes the impact of a collaborative intervention designed to promote prenatal and infant health. Classes on nutrition and other topics were held once a week for high-risk pregnant women and new mothers. Using a pre-test-post-test evaluation design, quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to assess program impact. Findings revealed statistically significant pre-test-post-test mean score differences in knowledge relating to prenatal and infant nutrition. Participants reported that as a result of the program, they started to eat healthy foods, compare food labels, reduced or stopped smoking, and decreased consumption of alcohol.

Reconsidering The Hiv/Aids Prevention Needs Of Latino Women In The United States, Marcela Raffaelli, Mariana Suarez-Al-Adam Nov 1998

Reconsidering The Hiv/Aids Prevention Needs Of Latino Women In The United States, Marcela Raffaelli, Mariana Suarez-Al-Adam

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The HIV/AIDS epidemic represents an ever-increasing threat to Latino populations in the United States, with women being most affected by this deadly disease. In this chapter, we explore the challenges Latino women face as they attempt to reduce their risk of sexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Our main interest lies in examining how the economic, cultural, and social realities of women's lives contribute to their risk of HIV infection and constrain their ability to reduce that risk. Because there is neither a cure for AIDS nor a vaccination to block HIV transmission, prevention of infection is …
