Use Of The Case Study Method To Provide Initial Design Strategies For Daylighting As A Primary Design Determinant In Earth-Integrated Structures, Brian Christain Holm
Use Of The Case Study Method To Provide Initial Design Strategies For Daylighting As A Primary Design Determinant In Earth-Integrated Structures, Brian Christain Holm
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Daylight, a natural energy source in the form of electromagnetic radiation, has been one medium by which one defined and perceived architectural space and form. That was why the creative use of daylight was and continues to be so important in the development of any built environment, especially those which have been integrated into their sites; This study has explored the possibilities of using natural daylight as a primary design determinate to enhance the interior environment of selected earth integrated architectural works. Four commercial institutional projects of various sizes were investigated as case studies to provide insight on the effectiveness …

Coping Strategies Of Ambulatory Burn Patients During Daily Dressing Changes, Renee P Milonas
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe the coping strategies used by ambulatory burn patients for management of pain during dressing changes. The sample consisted of 136 ambulatory burn patients (N = 136) who attended an outpatient Burn Clinic at a Southwestern medical center. Coping strategies were measured using the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (Rosenstiel & Keefe, 1983) and the Helpfulness of Prayer Scale (Saudia, Kinney, Brown & Young-Ward, 1991); The most frequently used coping strategies used by ambulatory burn patients were coping self-statements (87.5%, n = 119) and praying/hoping (71.3%, n = 97). There was no significant difference in …
Language Games And Computer-Aided Composition, Ryan M Moeller
Language Games And Computer-Aided Composition, Ryan M Moeller
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Wittgenstein's theory of the "language game" looks at the specific context in which language finds meaning. This theory significantly influences composition theory and practice within the problematic context of the computer-aided classroom, a much more complex and fast-paced environment than the traditional composition classroom. Students face a challenging, semester-long language game of creating a context from learning and meaning by actively participating in the rule-making processes of language. As a result, they are responsible for creating and maintaining their own language games by negotiating their ways through chatrooms (synchronous discussions), email (asynchronous discussions), virus complications, and other technological problems. Therefore, …
The Concerns, Needs And Coping Strategies Of Fathers When Their Children Have Cancer, Judy Anne Christensen Scott
The Concerns, Needs And Coping Strategies Of Fathers When Their Children Have Cancer, Judy Anne Christensen Scott
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Numerous families have discovered that trying to live with pediatric cancer demands all the energy they can produce. Many studies have been conducted to ascertain the feelings and needs of families in this crisis however, there is a paucity of research focusing on the fathers feelings and the father's needs. The purpose of this study was to explore the fathers' concerns, needs and coping strategies as they are experiencing pediatric cancer. A convenience sampling (n = 48) of fathers involved in cancer treatment for their child was obtained from the records of the Candelighters Group of America the Las Vegas, …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of individual characteristics, benefit satisfaction, and internal services received on employee job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Employees from a Las Vegas casino hotel were surveyed. A total of 201 usable questionnaires were returned for a response rate of 51 percent. The findings showed that benefit satisfaction and organizational commitment are positively related. Satisfaction with internal services was found to be significantly related to organizational commitment, and communication received was significantly related with benefit satisfaction. Only few of the sociodemographic variables were found to be significantly related to benefit satisfaction, job …
Normative, Validation, And Reliability Studies Of The Nine-Hole Peg Test Scores With Children, Yvonne Smith Widner
Normative, Validation, And Reliability Studies Of The Nine-Hole Peg Test Scores With Children, Yvonne Smith Widner
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to establish norms for fine motor dexterity skills on elementary school children five to ten years old and conduct reliability and validity studies utilizing the Nine-Hole Peg Test. Sample included 1,020 students in ten elementary schools in the Las Vegas area. As children got older, their fine motor speed increased. Significant gender differences were indicated in dexterity in all ages, but only in the dominant hand. Moderately high test-retest reliability and high interrater reliability were obtained. Strong correlation between the NHPT and Purdue Pegboard Test scores provided concurrent validity of the NHPT. Significant difference …
Cognition In The Christian Reformulation Of Tonga: Motivation, Internalization, And Schemas, Dorothea Neal Arin
Cognition In The Christian Reformulation Of Tonga: Motivation, Internalization, And Schemas, Dorothea Neal Arin
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Christian missionaries came to Tonga in the 19th century with the intention of converting the Tongans to Christianity and transforming Tongan society to fit with European-Victorian ideals. The missionaries were successful in their conversion efforts. However, traditional Tongan society was not merely replaced: cultural ideals blended. How this occurred, and the degree to which cultural features were affected, was based in part on the role of cognition. Cognitive and psychological concepts of culture change are applied to existing literature in an attempt to clarify the picture of culture change in Tonga. In addition, schema tendencies are identified through the proposed …
Lithic Analysis Of Three Lowland Virgin Anasazi Sites, Vikki Allen
Lithic Analysis Of Three Lowland Virgin Anasazi Sites, Vikki Allen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Lithic analysis, including an intensive debitage analysis, provides answers to previously posed research questions for the Bovine Bluff (early-Pueblo II), Main Ridge (mid-Pueblo II), and Adam 2 (late-Pueblo II) sites in the Moapa Valley. At Bovine Bluff, an aceramic area appears to be the result of previous site occupation. Analysis of the Main Ridge assemblage reveals six house areas with high lithic concentrations. The results for Adam 2 reveal that while the inhabitants of the site manufactured their own CCS projectile points, they imported obsidian points in either a finished or preform stage; This report is the first comparison of …

The Validity Of Percent Body Fat Estimates By Jackson & Pollock Skinfold Equation, Near Infrared, Bioelectrical Impedance And Body Mass Index, Jeffrey Lane Burns
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study compared the validity of percent fat estimates by the Jackson & Pollock sum of four skinfold equation (JPSF), bioeletrical impedance (BIA), near infrared (NIR) and body mass index (BMI) when compared to the criterion method of underwater weighing (UWW). Skinfolds were measured at four sites, the triceps, ilium, abdomen and thigh using the Harpenden skinfold caliper. The Jackson & Pollock sum of four skinfold equation was used to calculate percent body fat. Infrared interactance was determined on a Futrex 5000 measured at the biceps halfway between the axillary fold and the anticubital space. Bioelectrical impedance was determined with …
Supermarket Tabloid Influence On Mainstream Daily Newspaper Editorial Content, William Glenn Cook
Supermarket Tabloid Influence On Mainstream Daily Newspaper Editorial Content, William Glenn Cook
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Daily newspapers' content is influenced by the tabloid press in two ways. First, the dailies serve as a watchdog by criticizing tabloids' sensational news, covering litigation against tabloids, and allowing the subjects of tabloid reports to rebut or criticize allegations tabloids make against them. Second, the dailies occasionally follow up on or repeat stories first reported by tabloids. This study compared the content of three weekly supermarket tabloids--the National Enquirer, Globe, and Star--against the content of six daily newspapers--the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas Sun, Reno Gazette-Journal, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and USA Today--over a 26-week period. The …
The Influence Of Blood Flow On Angiogenesis In The 3-Day Chick Embryo, Brett Mark Clarke
The Influence Of Blood Flow On Angiogenesis In The 3-Day Chick Embryo, Brett Mark Clarke
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
I hypothesized that experimental elimination of blood flow via ligation of the conotruncus arteriosus would cause a cessation of blood vessel development and even vessel regression. India ink, injected to highlight the vasculature, had no effect on blood flow. Embryos were divided into ligated, sham, and control groups. After ligature placement and 6 hr. reincubation, KCl, added topically induced cardiac arrest. The diameters of the anterior cardinal vein, anterior vitelline vein, vitelline artery, and vitelline vein were not statistically different from sham and control values. Eye diameter increased equally in the presence and absence of blood flow. These results demonstrate …
Analysis Of Courtship Behaviors Of The Desert Tortoise, Gopherus Agassizii, Rebecca Lynn Holte
Analysis Of Courtship Behaviors Of The Desert Tortoise, Gopherus Agassizii, Rebecca Lynn Holte
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
General descriptions of courtship behavior have been published for the desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii. However, the amount and sources of variation in courtship behaviors have not been documented. I examined courtship behavior by analyzing videotaped interactions between captive males and females. I calculated duration of three courtship phases (trailing, subduing, and mounting) and quantified the number and rate of rams and bites. Male courtship behavior changed with increased courtship experience, and smaller males showed more variable behavior than larger males. Larger males bit small females at higher rates than did smaller males. Courtship varied in response to female size. Large …
"Dilbert": A Rhetorical Reflection Of Contemporary Organizational Communication, Beverly Ann Jedlinski
"Dilbert": A Rhetorical Reflection Of Contemporary Organizational Communication, Beverly Ann Jedlinski
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The comic strip "Dilbert," created by Scott Adams, was analyzed to evaluate its accuracy and effectiveness in mirroring contemporary organizational communication. This historical case study utilized the methods proposed by Kathleen J. Turner (1977) to provide a rhetorical perspective of "Dilbert" and to demonstrate the reciprocal relationship between the comic and society. A three-pronged approach was applied to examine: (1) Precedents in comic strips and organizational communication; (2) Subject matter and dialogue; and (3) Character composition and artistic style. Conclusions indicate that Adams has astutely captured the dysfunctional nature of workplace communication in a unique form of discourse embraced by …

This argument will examine the ethical issues, policies, and controversy surrounding the AIDS afflicted health care worker, especially the HIV positive Physician/Surgeon. The discussion encompasses evaluation of rights of the individual, natural and otherwise, with focus on the rights of confidentiality, privacy, and disability rights and related laws that pertain to afflicted individuals. The discussion will examine the ethical responsibilities of the HIV positive health care worker within the medical practice, along with issues of the patient rights of informed consent, institutional responsibility, and the policy positions of professional associations representing afflicted individuals. Protective legislation for victims of communicable disease …
The Impact Of Foreign Aid On Voting Inside The United Nations, Daniel Shayne Morey
The Impact Of Foreign Aid On Voting Inside The United Nations, Daniel Shayne Morey
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to determine if there is a connection between United States foreign aid donations and a recipient nation's voting patterns in the United Nations General Assembly. Tests in the past have not employed thorough methodologies to deal with the abundance of variables that influence a nation's voting behavior. The methodology created in this research focuses on three important conceptualizations. First, this work creates a new definition of foreign aid; specifically, the inclusion of military aid in a nation's aid package as well as loans and grants, despite their different characteristics. Second, this analysis considers only …
The Failure Of Altruism: Alternatives To Improve The Donor Rate In Organ Transplantation, John Richards Mundy
The Failure Of Altruism: Alternatives To Improve The Donor Rate In Organ Transplantation, John Richards Mundy
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Ethical and moral issues facing potential organ donors, their families or agents, and the medical community are created and driven by the rapidly expanding demand for the life-giving resource (ever more successfully utilized)--a factor coupled with the persistently scarce and relatively constant low level of supply. The serious nature of the shortage of compatible organs has prompted medical, ethical, and legal scholars to consider alternatives to altruistic donation. This approach has never been able to keep up with the demand--indeed, it falls further behind each year. One set of alternatives involves (currently banned) financial incentives for organ donors. I will …
God's Politics: Three Political Experiments Found In Genesis And Exodus, Ashley Maclaren Peace
God's Politics: Three Political Experiments Found In Genesis And Exodus, Ashley Maclaren Peace
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
My thesis is an examination of three political experiments of governance located in the first two books of the Old Testament of the Bible. The first two political experiments, which I call Artificial Politics and Personal Politics, must be considered failures because God, the ruler, fails to create a political structure that satisfies the masses or Himself. Both of these experiments are learning experiments that God uses to create the third experiment, which I entitle Mountain Politics. In this experiment, God successfully creates a form of governance that has lasted well over 2000 years by satisfying the masses and God. …
Recreation And Gambling Behaviors Among College Students, Laurie Platz
Recreation And Gambling Behaviors Among College Students, Laurie Platz
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Motivation of student gamblers was described and compared with their motivation for other recreational activities. Students (N = 996) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas completed self-report questionnaires including The South Oaks Gambling Screen (Lesieur and Bloom, 1987) and the Recreation Experience Preference Scales (Driver, 1983). Despite differences in statistical significance (p {dollar}<{dollar}.01), pathological gamblers (N = 111) and recreational gamblers (N = 349) shared 7 of their top 10 ranked motives for gambling. Primary motives for gambling appeared to remain stable with practical differences emerging in the rankings of their importance depending on an individual's level of gambling involvement. All students assigned statistically higher importance to their favorite other recreational activities than to their favorite gambling activities. However, recreational gamblers reported more agreement between motives for participating in their favorite gambling activities and their favorite other recreational activities.
Critical Care Nurses' Knowledge Of Cardiac Rhythm Strips, Marlene Carol Riley
Critical Care Nurses' Knowledge Of Cardiac Rhythm Strips, Marlene Carol Riley
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Competency testing of nurses in relevant areas is a somewhat new concept. This concept stems, in part, from the 1996 Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requirement that all institutions provide proof of competency of their employees. The purpose of this study considered whether critical care nurses who are ACLS-certified are able to accurately interpret cardiac rhythms. Patricia Benner's model of skill acquisition was used as the theoretical framework. Critical care nurses who are ACLS-certified are assumed to be in at least the competent level of skill acquisition; The sample was comprised of 99 ACLS-certified critical care …
Propaganda Or Persuasion: The Communist Party And Its Campaign To Integrate Baseball, Martha Mcardell Shoemaker
Propaganda Or Persuasion: The Communist Party And Its Campaign To Integrate Baseball, Martha Mcardell Shoemaker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis discusses whether propaganda, persuasion or a mix of both was used in the American Communist Party's (CPUSA) campaign to integrate professional baseball. Representative articles published in the Daily and Sunday Worker sports sections from 1936 through 1947 were chosen for examination and analysis. Specifically, the use of "god," "devil," and "charismatic" terms are identified and discussed how the terms were used to educate, motivate, and activate members to participate. The use of "charismatic" terms is also examined in relationship to "Aesopian" language. The author concludes that a mix of propaganda and persuasion was used because intent of the …
Chain Reaction: The Tragedy Of Atomic Governance, Mary Dawn Wammack
Chain Reaction: The Tragedy Of Atomic Governance, Mary Dawn Wammack
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
An unprecedented combination of imagination and capital resulted in the most profound, and profane, achievement in modern history--the atom bomb--but the strategies that empowered its development caused inestimable suffering in peacetime America. Discrete practices of secrecy, media manipulation, and the devaluation of scientific opinion evolved and coalesced during the cold war, permeating institutions and pre-empting any protection of the unwary from exposure to radioactive fallout. While the atomic testing program and its consequences are often considered in light of national policy, this analysis alternatively reveals the character, fusion, and trajectory of practices that culminated in the collision of the government …

The Hidden Age Revolution: Emergent Integration Of All Ages, Matilda White Riley
The Hidden Age Revolution: Emergent Integration Of All Ages, Matilda White Riley
Center for Policy Research
Over the past 30 years my colleagues and I have been focusing on conceptual and empirical work (the aging and society paradigm) that does not create policies, but can inform them. The most immediate phase of this long cumulative history is leading us now to hidden changes in people's lives and social institutions that herald a new phenomenon world-wide--a phenomenon that may have momentous implications for the policies of the future. We call it "age integration" because it *integrates* older people with others of every age. When I come to the end of my lecture, I hope you will see …
Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivational Factors And Type A Behavior Pattern, Karen M. Ratliff, Sharon J. Hicks
Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivational Factors And Type A Behavior Pattern, Karen M. Ratliff, Sharon J. Hicks
Modern Psychological Studies
In this study motivational factors were examined to determine if subjects were more intrinsically or extrinsically motivated. In addition, Type A behavior pattern was assessed to determine if a link exists between motivation and Type A behavior. A total of 176 students from a small midwestern university participated in this research. Intrinsic motivation was manipulated by using one of two movies, one interesting and one boring. Extrinsic motivation was measured by manipulating the number of extra credit points given for participation. Participants were assigned to one of four conditions: High intrinsic/low extrinsic, high intrinsic/high extrinsic, low intrinsic/low extrinsic, and low …
Influence Of Ground Cover On Spider Populations In A Table Grape Vineyard, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane
Influence Of Ground Cover On Spider Populations In A Table Grape Vineyard, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane
Horticulture and Crop Science
1. Cover crops and/or resident ground vegetation have been used in California vineyards to increase the number of predators and decrease the number of pestiferous herbivores. The most common resident predators in vineyards are spiders (Araneae). Several observational studies suggest that the addition of cover crops results in an increase in spider density and a decrease in insect pest densities. 2. To test experimentally the effects of cover crops and/or resident ground vegetation (hereafter collectively referred to as ground cover) on spider populations, a 3-year study was undertaken in a commercial vineyard. Large, replicated plots were established with and without …
