Fraction Instruction For Students With Disabilities: Comparing Two Teaching Sequences, Frances Mary Butler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of teaching middle-school students with mild to moderate disabilities equivalent fraction concepts and procedures using the concrete-representational-abstract (CRA) instructional sequence or the representational-abstract (RA) instructional sequence. Twenty-six students formed the CRA group, and twenty-four students formed the RA group, while sixty-five eighth-grade students without disabilities served as a contrast group. The two treatment groups received carefully sequenced instruction over ten lessons. The only difference between the two treatment groups was that the CRA group used concrete manipulative devices for the first three lessons while the RA group used representational drawings. The eighth-grade contrast group received …

The Effectiveness Of Traditional Instructional Methods In An Online Learning Environment, Steven Bradford Smith Jan 1998

The Effectiveness Of Traditional Instructional Methods In An Online Learning Environment, Steven Bradford Smith

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For more than a century, the most predominant form of instruction in higher education has been classroom-based and instructor-led. Today, this traditional approach to learning is being challenged by new technologies such as multimedia, telecommunications, and the Internet. It has been suggested that the effectiveness of traditional pedagogical methods in alternative learning environments may be resolved through the creation of a new domain for educational interaction referred to as online education (Harasim, 1990); There has been much research focused on the advantages of teaching university courses online (Davis, Odell, Abbitt, Amos, 1999; Hiltz, 1994; Harasim, 1990). However, there is little …

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise In Reading The Interracial Canon, Craig Andrew Magee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise in Reading the Interracial Canon has two purposes. First, it offers detailed readings of three American novels: An Imperative Duty by William Dean Howells (1891), What Answer? by Anna Dickinson (1868), and Kingsblood Royal by Sinclair Lewis (1947). These readings are accomplished within the context of the "interracial canon", a set of writings dealing with the expression of various aspects of interracial relationships. The interracial canon, as well as its specialized vocabulary and unique theoretical outlook, is roughly sketched in an introduction and several appendices.

Anorexia Nervosa: An Exploration Of Early- And Later-Onset, Jennifer Claire Duddy Jan 1998

Anorexia Nervosa: An Exploration Of Early- And Later-Onset, Jennifer Claire Duddy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Children with anorexia nervosa have often been overlooked or misdiagnosed because of the lack of understanding and clarity surrounding early onset. This study was aimed to help clarify ambiguities by exploring the similarities and differences of early- and later-onset anorexia nervosa. Results from case studies of a female child, adolescent, and adult diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are presented. Findings from the case studies indicate several similarities between the two onsets such as comparable demographic characteristics, diagnostic features, symptoms of associated mental disorders, personality characteristics, and etiological factors. Findings also infer some differences that include variance in prognoses, severity of physical …

Physician-Assisted Suicide: The Courts Leave It To The States, David Wayne Newton Jan 1998

Physician-Assisted Suicide: The Courts Leave It To The States, David Wayne Newton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In Vacco v. Quill and Washington v. Glucksberg, the Supreme Court ruled that laws in New York and Washington prohibiting physician-assisted suicide violated neither the Due Process nor the Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Court overturned decisions from the Second and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal. The Court stated these decisions do not prevent a state from enacting legislation approving assisted suicide, but there is no protection of such under the Constitution. This thesis examines the legal reasoning used by the two Courts of Appeal in their decisions and the Supreme Court in its decision. There is …

The Media's Coverage Of Jury Trials, Gregory M Smith Jan 1998

The Media's Coverage Of Jury Trials, Gregory M Smith

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the nature and extent of the print media's coverage of jury trials. A content analysis was conducted on the Los Angeles Times from 1973 to 1995, examining both overall trends in jury coverage and the extent and nature of that coverage before and after several high-profile jury trials. The findings of the content analysis validated the belief that the print media, by and large, provides to the public what the public is most interested in reading about. That interest, is unpredictable at best. It fluctuates from criminal trials of celebrities, to the sexual past of the President …

Homogeneous Landscape: The American Motel As A Cultural Indicator, Troy Jay Elston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The following research is an exploration of the American chain motel as a cultural indicator. Through the lens of the homogenized chain motel, connections are made between the American consumer and a general awareness of the power of marketing architecture in the United States. The motel's evolution and meaning is further explained in terms of how the consumers' needs are identified, clarified, and satisfied within a commodity driven society. In the past 40 years the market's importance on the hospitality and housing industries have proven to be highly successful, as shown through the purchasing decisions of millions of Americans continuing …

Constructing Deseret, Dana Boam Jan 1998

Constructing Deseret, Dana Boam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Constructing Deseret is an examination of the epistemological assumption that perfect knowledge equals perfect being. It follows my progression as a poet from imitation of Yeats and Shakespeare, and traditional forms, such as sonnet, villanelle and haiku, to the investigation and validation of my own styles and forms. For the early poems the reaching of insight and wisdom is the goal of the poem. Next I look at nature and the world as a source of knowledge and standard of perfection. What follows is a rejection of the pursuit of education/perfection in order to embrace a plain looking at self, …

A Sturdy House Built On Shifting Soil: Separation Of Powers Interpretations From The Bench, Michael Justin Sibley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the development of the separation of powers doctrine and its application by the United States Supreme Court. Its analysis will focus upon the six different approaches to the doctrine that the Court has employed over the past two hundred years. Moreover, it will show that these six methods of analysis; which include the textual, original intent, structural, institutional competence, historical practice, and values approaches, have often been mixed single cases; The approach that is employed in these separation of powers cases often dictates their outcome. In many of these cases, a different approach may have led to …

Semiotic Analysis Of A Versace Visual Myth, William Earl Taylor Jan 1998

Semiotic Analysis Of A Versace Visual Myth, William Earl Taylor

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study analyzes the mythical religious imagery of Gianni Versace through a visual semiotic analysis. The image being examined has characteristics of the religious martyrdom of St. Sebastian. Analyzing the St. Sebastian image via semiotics allows the visual message, produced by Gianni Versace, to be examined at multiple levels. Decoding this visual message allows for an understanding of ideologies, cultures, and possibly the maintenance of the status quo; Semiotics is a method of breaking down the visual sign to understand the visual messages. Semiotics contains three components, which are the signifier, the signified, and the sign. Each component, the signifier, …

Language Games And Computer-Aided Composition, Ryan M Moeller Jan 1998

Language Games And Computer-Aided Composition, Ryan M Moeller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Wittgenstein's theory of the "language game" looks at the specific context in which language finds meaning. This theory significantly influences composition theory and practice within the problematic context of the computer-aided classroom, a much more complex and fast-paced environment than the traditional composition classroom. Students face a challenging, semester-long language game of creating a context from learning and meaning by actively participating in the rule-making processes of language. As a result, they are responsible for creating and maintaining their own language games by negotiating their ways through chatrooms (synchronous discussions), email (asynchronous discussions), virus complications, and other technological problems. Therefore, …

Cognition In The Christian Reformulation Of Tonga: Motivation, Internalization, And Schemas, Dorothea Neal Arin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Christian missionaries came to Tonga in the 19th century with the intention of converting the Tongans to Christianity and transforming Tongan society to fit with European-Victorian ideals. The missionaries were successful in their conversion efforts. However, traditional Tongan society was not merely replaced: cultural ideals blended. How this occurred, and the degree to which cultural features were affected, was based in part on the role of cognition. Cognitive and psychological concepts of culture change are applied to existing literature in an attempt to clarify the picture of culture change in Tonga. In addition, schema tendencies are identified through the proposed …
