Predictors Of Compliance Of Aids Patients On Protease Inhibitors, Tina Gursahani Jan 1998

Predictors Of Compliance Of Aids Patients On Protease Inhibitors, Tina Gursahani

Open Access Master's Theses

Compliance with Protease Inhibitors therapy is a very significant problem because noncompliant patients may develop resistance. The factors associated with compliance were examined in an HIV infected population (n=73) who were currently being prescribed a Protease Inhibitor. Data on demographics, clinical characteristics, mood status and coping were obtained. Compliance was measured by the ''temptation to skip Protease Inhibitor scale" and "number of doses missed in the past three months". Multiple regression was used to examine three sets of predictors variables. Amongst the demographic predictors, number of people in household was significantly associated (p<0.01) with the dependent variable "Temptation to skip Protease Inhibitor" while gender was significantly associated with the dependent variable "number of doses missed in the past three months". The other demographic variables showed little association with compliance. Amongst the clinical predictors, pain interfering with work in the past four weeks significantly predicted the temptation to skip Protease Inhibitor therapy while none of the clinical predictors were associated with the number of doses missed in the past 3 months. General mental health and behavioral escape avoidance were the mood and coping variables that showed significant associations with the temptation to skip Protease Inhibitors. None of these predicted the number of doses missed in the past three months. Finally a multivariate model was developed which investigated factors which were most highly associated with medication compliance. General mental health and number of people in household appeared to be the most highly associated factors. These results suggested that patients should be treated for psychological distress and their families should be informed about the importance of social support to reduce the impact of this problem.

Trends Affecting Both Legitimate Business And The Italian-American Mafia And The Resulting Changes In The Leadership Process, Kimberley M. Reiners Jan 1998

Trends Affecting Both Legitimate Business And The Italian-American Mafia And The Resulting Changes In The Leadership Process, Kimberley M. Reiners

Honors Theses

The past two decades have brought with it a wave of movies and novels attempting to explain, or at least accurately portray, the Italian-American Mafia. One who has viewed the Godfather quickly becomes fascinated by this subculture and its ability to exist simultaneously with the rest of society. Moviegoers are mesmerized by codes of loyalty, silence, and kinship. However, much of what the public perceives as fact is little more than fabricated fiction. Part of what makes this world so intriguing is so little is known about it. For example, until 1986 there was no solid proof that the Mafia …

Cross-Cultural Leadership Training, Merilee Karr Jan 1998

Cross-Cultural Leadership Training, Merilee Karr

Honors Theses

Research is cross-cultural training is a young and growing field. The practitioners included in this research have yet to develop a comprehensive training based on needs or desired outcomes. Therefore the level of understanding for this growing area of human resources and increasingly important issue in global competition has yet to reach a point where managers can confidently justify the expense to the company. That is not to say that some companies do not see the need for this type of training, but without proper proof of the effectiveness of the expense, it is difficult to convince executives of its …

The Greatest Evasion: Why Technology Won't Save Education, Kevin Mattson Jan 1998

The Greatest Evasion: Why Technology Won't Save Education, Kevin Mattson

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

Americans place an enormous amount of faith in education=s power to solve social problems. Today, liberals tend to believe that education can improve our attitudes, making us less racist by broadening our perspective and knowledge of different people and cultures. Conservatives often argue that education can solve our economic problems by training citizens for jobs and increasing their capacity for upward social mobility. Indeed, President Clinton, who may be viewed as bridging liberal and conservative ideals, posed education as a solution to economic dislocation. His solution is to provide unemployed citizens with the necessary skills to find new forms of …

Statistical Analysis Of Structural Response Via A Quadratic Regression Model, Mahesh Balasubramanian Jan 1998

Statistical Analysis Of Structural Response Via A Quadratic Regression Model, Mahesh Balasubramanian

Masters Theses

"Described herein is the development of an efficient capability to analyze the statistics of structural responses given a description of the statistics of the input, or design, variables. In the application of interest, inputs and outputs are related through a very large finite element model. The finite element model is approximated here by a second-order hyper-surface. Developed for the quadratic relationship are expressions for response means, standard deviations and correlation coefficients. The analysis allows correlated and uncorrelated input variables, and admissible input variable distributions are normal, log-normal and Weibull.

In addition to characterizations of response means, standard deviations and correlation …
