Soret Feedback In Thermal Diffusion Of Suspensions, Nelson V. Tabiryan, Weili Luo
Soret Feedback In Thermal Diffusion Of Suspensions, Nelson V. Tabiryan, Weili Luo
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We have theoretically studied the interaction of a light beam with liquids containing absorbing nanoparticles. We have shown that the Soret effect ensures a feedback that essentially limits heat insertion into the system and the change in its temperature: the temperature rise on the axis of a Gaussian beam is inversely proportional to the Soret constant. Transverse spatial redistribution of the absorbing particles gives a specific thickness dependence of the transparency of the material. These properties not only play an essential role in the study of light interactions with absorbing Solutions, but also can underlie optical methods for measurements of …

Interaction Of Light With A Transversely Moving Nonlinear Medium: Beyond Doppler Laser Velocimetry, N. V. Tabiryan, S. R. Nersisyan, M. Warenghem
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Interaction of a laser beam with a transversely moving nonlinear medium has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. With the mesophase of a nematic Liquid crystal (NLC) as the nonlinear medium, transverse motion of the NLC at speeds of similar to 1 mu m/s relative to the laser beam, causes remarkable changes in its orientational state. The response of the medium to the transverse motion is enhanced considerably in the case of threshold nonlinearity where the reorientation of the LC takes place as a second order phase transition. The diffusive transport of light induced perturbations of the nonlinear medium, give …
Spin-Glass-Like Complex Susceptibility Of Frozen Magnetic Fluids, Susamu Taketomi
Spin-Glass-Like Complex Susceptibility Of Frozen Magnetic Fluids, Susamu Taketomi
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
The complex magnetic susceptibility chi=chi'-i chi " of different kinds of magnetic fluids (MFs) was measured as a function of temperature T from 6 to 300 K in a weak ac field of 1 Oe for frequencies ranging from f=0.1 to 1000 Hz. A prominent peak appears in both chi' and chi " as a function of T in the frozen state of the MF in which cluster formation of the colloidal particles is difficult, whereas no peak appears in the frozen state of other MFs in which clusters form easily. The peak temperature T-p2 of chi " depends on …
Exponential Asymptotic Expansions And Approximations Of The Unstable And Stable Manifolds Of Singularly Perturbed Systems With The Henon Map As An Example, Alexander Tovbis, Masa Tsuchiya, Charles Jaffé
Exponential Asymptotic Expansions And Approximations Of The Unstable And Stable Manifolds Of Singularly Perturbed Systems With The Henon Map As An Example, Alexander Tovbis, Masa Tsuchiya, Charles Jaffé
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
The subject of this paper is the construction of the exponential asymptotic expansions of the unstable and stable manifolds of the area-preserving Henon map. The approach that is taken enables one to capture the exponentially small effects that result from what is known as the Stokes phenomenon in the analytic theory of equations with irregular singular points. The exponential asymptotic expansions were then used to obtain explicit functional approximations for the stable and unstable manifolds. These approximations are compared with numerical simulations and the agreement is excellent. Several of the main results of the paper have been previously announced in …
Phase Diagram Of Three-Dimensional Dynamical Triangulations With A Boundary, Simeon Warner, Simon Carrerall, Ray Renken
Phase Diagram Of Three-Dimensional Dynamical Triangulations With A Boundary, Simeon Warner, Simon Carrerall, Ray Renken
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We use Monte Carlo simulation to study the phase diagram of three-dimensional dynamical triangulations with a boundary. Three phases are indentified and characterized. One of these phases is a new, boundary dominated phase; a simple argument is presented to explain its existence. First-order transitions are shown to occur along the critical Lines separating phases.

Wavelength Dependence Of 4-Dimethylamino-4 '-Nitrostilbene Polymer Thin Film Photodegradation, Qiang Zhang, Michael Canva, George Stegeman
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
The polymeric electro-optical stilbene material, 4-dimethylamino-4 '-nitrostilbene (DANS), was illuminated at wavelengths ranging from the visible to near-infrared in order to quantify its photodegradation processes. Photodegradation due to one-photon and two-photon absorption was studied. The quantum efficiency of the chromophore degradation is found to be strongly wavelength and absorption mechanism dependent. This suggests that, in different regions of the spectrum, different excited states or different mechanisms are involved in the degradation process. In the near-infrared spectral region, operation lifetimes of electro-optic devices made from this chromophore are expected to be around only few hundreds hours, dramatically shorter than it was …

Electromechanical Properties Of Electrostrictive Poly(Vinylidenefluoride-Trifluoroethylene) Copolymer, Xing-Zhong Zhao, Vivek Bharti, Q. M. Zhang, T. Romotowski, F. Tito, R. Ting
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We report a large electrostrictive strain in electron irradiated poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymer at a composition with 65 mol % vinylidene fluoride, which also exhibits a large ratio of strain to applied field (similar to 275 pm/V). The strain response is nearly independent of the external driving condition (unipolar or bipolar field) and does not change with temperature in about 20 degrees C temperature range near room temperature. Moreover, near room temperature, the material can reach a relatively high quasistatic longitudinal electromechanical coupling factor k(33)similar to 0.33.

Synthesis Of Nanocrystalline Diamond Thin Films From An Ar-Ch4 Microwave Plasma, D. Zhou, T. G. Mccauley, L. C. Qin, A. R. Krauss, D. M. Gruen
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Nanocrystalline diamond thin films have been synthesized in an Ar-CH4 microwave discharge, without the addition of molecular hydrogen. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy characterizations show that the films consist of a pure crystalline diamond phase with very small grain sizes ranging from 3 to 20 nm. Atomic force microscopy analysis demonstrates that the surfaces of the nanocrystalline diamond films remain smooth independent of the film thicknesses. Furthermore, the reactant gas pressure, which strongly affects the concentration of C-2 dimer in the Ar-CH4 plasma as well as the growth rate of the films, has been found …

Structure And Dynamics Of The 4p -> Ns,Md Autoionizing Resonances Between The P-3 And S-1 Thresholds In Atomic Bromine, S. Benzaid, M. O. Krause, A. Menzel, C. D. Caldwell
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
The relative partial photoionization cross sections sigma(i) and photoelectron angular distribution parameters beta(1) are measured for all possible final ionic states of Br+ between the P-3(2) and S-1(0) thresholds. The decay patterns of the autoionizing 4p(4 3)P(1,0) nl, 4p(4 1)D(2) nl, and 4p(4 1)S(0) nl Rydberg series arising from the 4p ins,md excitations are observed at the fine-structure level in all available channels. For each Rydberg series, the energies, quantum defects, and photoelectron angular distribution parameters are determined, as well as the widths and shape parameters of the low-lying members. Relative total cross sections are derived from the partial cross …
Singular Structure In 4d Simplicial Gravity, S. Catterall, R. Renken, J. Kogut
Singular Structure In 4d Simplicial Gravity, S. Catterall, R. Renken, J. Kogut
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We show that the phase transition previously observed in dynamical triangulation models of quantum gravity can be understood as being due to the creation of a singular link. The transition between singular and non-singular geometries as the gravitational coupling is varied appears to be first order.
Nonlinear Optical Effects In Ferrofluids Induced By Temperature And Concentration Cross Coupling, Tengda Du, Weili Luo
Nonlinear Optical Effects In Ferrofluids Induced By Temperature And Concentration Cross Coupling, Tengda Du, Weili Luo
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Both experiment and numerical calculation were performed to study the nonlinear optical (NLO) effects in ferrofluids consisting of magnetic particles suspended in an organic solvent. We show that, in contrast to all the mechanisms responsible for NLO phenomena known so far, the novel NLO effects in ferrofluids in the zero applied field can be explained by the cross coupling between the temperature of the system and the concentration of particles through thermophoresis, which in turn leads to the spatial distribution of the refractive index. This NLO effect is enhanced by applying a moderate magnetic field whose mechanism is unclear so …
Removal Of Laser-Melted Material With An Assist Gas, K. Farooq, A. Kar
Removal Of Laser-Melted Material With An Assist Gas, K. Farooq, A. Kar
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Molten material is removed in many laser applications such as laser grooving and laser cutting. An assist gas is usually used to remove the molten material from the laser material interaction zone. The effect of assist gas pressure on the material removal rate is investigated in this article for laser cutting and grooving applications. The model for melt depth is based on the overall energy balance, and the cut depth is obtained by considering the effect of the assist gas. The model for kerf width is based on the modified Rosenthal solution taking into account the melting effect. The cut …

Several known mammalian ribonucleotide reductase inhibitors featuring a polyhydroxyphenyl and/or hydroxamate moiety as the active group were screened for potency in inhibiting growth of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Compounds containing a 2,3- or 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl group as well as benzohydroxamate appear to be the most effective inhibitors of the malaria parasite.
Theoretical Foundation Of The Optical Current-Controlled Oscillator And Its Applications For Subcarrier Optical Communications, Guifang Li, Feng Tian
Theoretical Foundation Of The Optical Current-Controlled Oscillator And Its Applications For Subcarrier Optical Communications, Guifang Li, Feng Tian
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
The optical current-controlled oscillator (CCO) is an all-optical device capable of producing frequency-tunable intensity oscillations (subcarriers) on an optical carrier without any active radio frequency/microwave components. From a dynamic point of view, the CCO is a nonlinear optical system supporting the Hopf bifurcation and operating in the periodic orbit regime. This article presents the theoretical foundation for the optical CCO and its applications in optical communications involving subcarriers. Using one embodiment of the optical CCO employing a two-section Fabry-Perot laser diode, we present the static and modulation characteristics of the periodic-orbit subcarrier of the optical CCO. The performance of CCO-based …

Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We report efficient room-temperature continuous-wave intracavity frequency doubling of an upconversion-pumped Er(1%):YLiF4 laser at 850 nm. A titanium-sapphire laser was used for excitation of the S-4(3/2)-- > I-4(13/2) transition in erbium. The maximum laser output power at 850 nm was 1200 mW. Intracavity frequency doubling the fundamental wave utilizing lithium triborate as nonlinear crystal yielded a maximum second-harmonic output power of 540 mW at 425 nm.

Investigations of the dynamics of the far-infrared p-Ge laser emission reveal strong periodic soliton-like intensity spikes with less than 100 ps duration. We interpret these spikes as self-mode-locking of p-Ge laser modes. The effect becomes more pronounced when a GaAs/AlGaAs/InGaAs quantum well structure on a semi-insulating GaAs substrate is inserted into the laser cavity.
Power Analysis For Detecting Trends In The Presence Of Concomitant Variables, David M. Nickerson, Arnold Brunell
Power Analysis For Detecting Trends In The Presence Of Concomitant Variables, David M. Nickerson, Arnold Brunell
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
In some situations, survey counts must be adjusted for the effects of concomitant variables using analysis of covariance in order to detect a trend in abundance over time. A power analysis in these cases allows the calculation of the probability of detecting a trend after adjustments. The methods will be applicable to samples taken at regular or irregular intervals in time or space, and in which the effects of the concomitant variables do not change over time. Furthermore, the detection of linear and intrinsically linear change can be determined. The methods are applied to the monitoring of American alligator (Alligator …

Phase Structure Of Dynamical Triangulation Models In Three Dimensions, Ray L. Renken, Simon M. Catterall, John B. Kogut
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
The dynamical triangulation model of three-dimensional quantum gravity is shown to have a line of transitions in an expanded phase diagram which includes a coupling mu to the order of the vertices. Monte Carlo renormalization group and finite size scaling techniques are used to locate and characterize this line, Our results indicate that for mu < mu(1) similar to -1.0 the model is always in a crumpled phase independent of the value of the curvature coupling. For mu < 0 the results are in agreement with an approximate mean field treatment, We find evidence that this line corresponds to first-order transitions extending to positive mu. However, the behavior appears to change for mu > mu(2) similar to 2.0-4,0, The simplest scenario that is consistent with the data is the existence of a critical end point.

Indigenous Nations And International Trade, Robert Berry
Indigenous Nations And International Trade, Robert Berry
Librarian Publications
In an era where economic policy must be increasingly fashioned in global terms, the economies of Indigenous Nations in present-day Canada and the United States remain isolated from international commerce. These nations--once independent, now governed by a supervising state --in most cases cannot be said to enjoy evenan unhindered access to commerce within the states that surround them. Indeed, the insularity of the North American Indigenous Nations is a fundamental feature of their existence and, too, a formidable barrier to these nations' ability to establish vibrant and diversified economies.
This Note examines the central role that trade played in relations …

Effective Communication In The Performance Appraisal Interview: Face-To-Face Communication For Public Managers In The Culturally Diverse Workplace, John F. Kikoski
Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications
A study restates and then extends a thesis about the performance appraisal process first published almost 15 years ago - that the public manager's performance in the face-to-face encounter of the appraisal interview itself is the Achilles' heel of the entire process. This 1983 article held that many public managers experience discomfort approaching the actual performance appraisal interview and difficulty in conducting it. They are usually untrained and may even be unaware of the scholarly work that has identified the skills that make for more effective face-to-face communication. The 1983 article also presented 6 specific microcommunication skills to help public …

Can Corporate Repositioning, The Turn Around Prescription Of The 1990s, Assist Dimac Direct In Regaining The Number One Position Of Direct Response Agencies?, Krista M. Mackin
Theses
This thesis will focus on corporate repositioning within the industry of direct marketing - what is it, what it does, why it is necessary and how to develop and maintain it.
The term "corporate repositioning" is the latest on the world's number one business strategy that was first studied and developed by Al Ries and Jack Trout in their book Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind. Corporate repositioning entails more than changing a company's logo, creating images through advertising and generating hype for a company's products or services. Rather, repositioning means that a company must create a "position" in the …

Characteristics And Qualities Of The Successful Entrepreneur: An Empirical Study, Pearl Farer Raskin
Theses
Entrepreneurship has become an increasingly important phenomenon for researchers and policy makers to understand. It is important for job growth, accounting for 80% of new jobs created in the United States. It is a key factor in enhancing technological innovation, productivity growth and per capita income in industrialized nations. Furthermore, it is an important career choice, accounting for roughly one tenth of the labor force at any point in time, and about one fifth of the labor force for some part of their careers (Birley 156).
Many individuals have difficulty bringing their ideas to the market and creating a new …
The Influence Of Perceived Social Support On Loneliness Among Students Of Foreign Status Studying In The United States, Brian Vakoc
Theses
Loneliness is a common experience for individuals studying in foreign countries. Where cultures, communications, and social structures are unfamiliar feelings of loneliness can present a difficult component within the adjustment process. Social support has a direct influence on a person's ability to adjust to an unfamiliar environment. Feelings of loneliness experienced by a person can be attributed to that person's perception of social support. Students who are studying in the United States from abroad are subject to a multitude of unfamiliar environments that promote uncertain social supports and increased levels of loneliness. Understanding differences between cultures and their effects on …
