Removal Of Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Vapors In Biotrickling Filters : Process Modeling And Validation With Chlorinated Aromatic Compounds, Christos J. Mpanias
Dissertations
This study dealt with the removal of vapors of volatile organic compounds from airstreams in biotrickling filters (BTFs). A detailed general model was developed for describing the process under steady-state conditions. The model accounts for mass transfer between phases (air, liquid, biofilm) and biodegradation of pollutants in the biofilm. It also accounts for potential kinetic interactions among pollutants as well as potential process limitations by oxygen availability.
The general model was experimentally validated using mono-chlorobenzene (m-CB) and ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) as model compounds either alone or in mixture with each other. Before BTF experiments were undertaken, a systematic kinetic study was …
In Vitro Cytotoxicity Study Of Glutaraldehyde And No-React Treated Bioprosthetic Heart Valves And The Aortic Wall, Roger Ongosi
In Vitro Cytotoxicity Study Of Glutaraldehyde And No-React Treated Bioprosthetic Heart Valves And The Aortic Wall, Roger Ongosi
Theses
Valvular failure due to calcification and leaflet disruption of artificial bioprostheses is still a major concern in valve replacement surgery. Previous studies have shown that Glutaraldehyde, a chemical used in the treatment of artificial valves promotes calcification. In this investigation glutaraldehyde and No-React® treated tissue samples of pericardium, cusp and the aortic wall were tested for cytocompatibility using live mouse fibroblast cultures. The samples were cut into 3 X 3 mm2 washed in phosphate buffered saline solution, transferred into cell culture flask containing cells that had been cultured for 24 hours and incubated at 37 "C in 5 % CO2. …

Information Content In American Television Advertising: A Replication And Update, Laura Kathleen Sandgren
Information Content In American Television Advertising: A Replication And Update, Laura Kathleen Sandgren
Dissertations and Theses
Three hundred and seven randomly selected American network television commercials aired between October 18 and November 18, 1997 were analyzed to determine their informational value using the fourteen criteria established by Resnik and Stem in 1977. The results of this study were compared with Resnik and Stem's 1991 study, revealing that there has not been any significant change in the amount of information in American television commercials since Resnik and Stem's replication sample.
This study also used Resnik and Stem's (1977) criteria to further examine if the amount-of information contained in TV commercials varied depending on the gender or age …

Approaching Fallingwater: An Ethography Of Place, Brian Gregory
Approaching Fallingwater: An Ethography Of Place, Brian Gregory
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, has always been more than just a house. It has also functioned as a workplace, a tourist destination, "the best all-time work of American architecture," and a cultural symbol. By talking to some of the people involved in its history and by examining "autho-ethnographic" texts found within the community, I attempt to use ethnographic methods to understand a complicated site. Nestled in the rural Appalachian foothills of southwestern Pennsylvania, Fallingwater is also isolated. It is tempting for visitors to view it as a work of art "plopped down in the middle of nowhere." And …

Developing An Effective Ministry With Mid Life Single Adults In A Mega Church, Charles Richard Hughes
Developing An Effective Ministry With Mid Life Single Adults In A Mega Church, Charles Richard Hughes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A review of current literature demonstrates that very little material is available to assist local churches with developing a targeted ministry with mid life single adults. The purpose of this project was to answer the basic research question of how an effective ministry with mid life single adults was developed in a mega church by answering six sub questions concerning demographic analysis, the need, a model, the membership, leadership and administration, forming a chain of variables for effective ministry. Based on an extensive questionnaire of the membership in 1991 and 1994 the project draws conclusions in this historical perspective case …
The Professional Education Of Youth Workers: A Role For Teacher Education?, Vivienne Watts, Michael Garbutcheon Singh
The Professional Education Of Youth Workers: A Role For Teacher Education?, Vivienne Watts, Michael Garbutcheon Singh
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper suggests that education faculties are ideally placed to develop, initiate, coordinate the initial educational needs of youth workers, and to prepare teachers to collaborate with other agencies in responding to the needs of youth. Consequently, a role for teacher education exists in the design and development of courses for the initial educational needs of youth workers, to coordinate the implementation of those courses, and to prepare both prospective and practising teachers for a role in responding to youth problems. This extended role for education faculties is new and the result of changing societal and environmental factors currently facing …
Join In The Dance: Didacticism In Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice, Lisa Morales
Join In The Dance: Didacticism In Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice, Lisa Morales
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The importance of didacticism in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice may sometimes be overlooked in an effort to be entertained by the fairy-tale essence of her work. This is unfortunate since Pride and Prejudice offers a rich critique of eighteenth-century English society, as well as heralds the beginning of a new form of novel writing. This new form of novel writing includes a vision of an autonomous heroine who exercises freedom from patriarchal society and the “marriage market.” Austen’s ironic didacticism in Pride and Prejudice highlights hypocrisy and contradiction, and in so doing, mock social expectations. It is through her …
The Effect Of Higher Education On Attitudes And Values: Gender And The Academic Environment, Gayle Robbins
The Effect Of Higher Education On Attitudes And Values: Gender And The Academic Environment, Gayle Robbins
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of exposure to a post-secondary educational environment on attitudes and values was assessed utilizing a cross-sectional research design. Four hundred sixty-two participants completed the Schwartz Value Survey and a social distance scale. Of these, 56 were first and second year undergraduates, 57 were third and fourth year undergraduates, 85 were masters level graduate students, 77 were doctoral level graduate students, 96 were non-tenured faculty and 91 were tenured faculty. It was hypothesized that students and entry level faculty would undergo a socialization processes which would include changes in attitudes and values consistent with established tenured faculty. Annotated Bibliography Of Research In The Teaching Of English, Deborah Brown, Richard L. Larson, Melissa E. Whiting
Faculty Publications
Twice a year, in the May and December issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies listed appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (July through December, 1997, for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; it makes no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period tinder review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your …

Ammonium And Nitrate Effects On Growth, Development And Nutrient Uptake Of Hydroponic Wheat, Thomas M. Hooten
Ammonium And Nitrate Effects On Growth, Development And Nutrient Uptake Of Hydroponic Wheat, Thomas M. Hooten
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The long-term effects of low and high NH4+/ NO3- uptake ratios in a system with rigorous control of pH and nitrogen concentration are poorly understood. In two replicate studies, two cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum) were grown to maturity with three NH4+/ NO3- ratios in hydroponic solution: 0/100, 25/75, and 85/15%. Nitrogen was controlled at ample levels throughout the 70-d life cycle and pH was controlled at 5.8 ± 0.2. An equimolar ratio of NH4+ to Cl- was used to facilitate charge balance. Nitrogen consumption …

Ensnared Destinies?: African Marketwomanry In The Slave Trade Era, Lillian Ashcraft-Eason
Ensnared Destinies?: African Marketwomanry In The Slave Trade Era, Lillian Ashcraft-Eason
ICS Fellow Lectures
Did you ever wonder what African women were like before being transported into slavery and being culturally transformed? A virtually unexplored topic in American cultural studies is the transformation of African women into African Americans. A hearing from the women themselves would be an individual primary source for such discovery. "[However,] only a half dozen or so African women have bequeathed writings from the American colonial era that scholars can peruse. To locate images and perspectives if African women in traditional Africa and in the colonies, I explore sources from Africa, Europe and colonial America--ranging from mythic orature to secondary …
