We have searched for the production of a selectron and a squark in e+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The selectron and squark are sought in the direct decay into the lightest neutralino in the framework of supersymmetric extensions to the Standard Model which conserve R-parity. No evidence for the production of supersymmetric particles has been found in a data sample corresponding to 46.6 pb-1 of integrated luminosity. We express upper limits on the product of the cross section times the decay branching ratios as excluded regions in the parameter space …

The Tubular Phase Of Self-Avoiding Anisotropic Crystalline Membranes, Mark Bowick, Alex Travesset
The Tubular Phase Of Self-Avoiding Anisotropic Crystalline Membranes, Mark Bowick, Alex Travesset
Physics - All Scholarship
We analyze the tubular phase of self-avoiding anisotropic crystalline membranes. A careful analysis using renormalization group arguments together with symmetry requirements motivates the simplest form of the large-distance free energy describing fluctuations of tubular configurations. The non-self-avoiding limit of the model is shown to be exactly solvable. For the full self-avoiding model we compute the critical exponents using an epsilon-expansion about the upper critical embedding dimension for general internal dimension D and embedding dimension d. We then exhibit various methods for reliably extrapolating to the physical point (D=2,d=3). Our most accurate estimates are nu=0.62 for the Flory exponent and zeta=0.80 …

Interview 1998.09 Jackie Wall, Jackie Wall
Civil Rights in Prince Edward County
Ms. Jackie Wall was born in Calcutta India, in 1926, and later lived with her Aunt and Uncle. After her Uncle died she moved with her Aunt to Baltimore, then later to Farmville, Virginia. Jackie married J. Barrye Wall Jr. and moved back to Farmville. She discusses her thoughts about the school closings and the Wall's involvement in massive resistance, as well as her recollection of the time period and the hostilities in the community. This interview was conducted by Susan Bagby and Carolyn Dewolfe.

Habitat Use By Parturient And Nonparturient Caribou Of The Mentasta Caribou Herd, Neil L. Barten
Biological Sciences
I compared habitat use and diet characteristics among preparturient female caribou (Rangifer tarandus), and between parturient and nonparturient caribou during and after parturition, in the Mentasta Caribou Herd, Alaska, to explain movements by parturient females just prior to giving birth. I monitored 39 radio-collared females in 1994 and 40 animals in 1995. I estimated forage biomass, collected forage for determination of nitrogen and in-vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), and collected fecal pellets to calculate indices of diet composition and diet quality at sites used by caribou. I also recorded sightings of predators throughout the study area. During peak parturition, females …

Increasing The Generativity Of Identity-Based Procedures For Establishing Arbitrary Conditional Relations, Scott D. Lane, Thomas S. Critchfield
Increasing The Generativity Of Identity-Based Procedures For Establishing Arbitrary Conditional Relations, Scott D. Lane, Thomas S. Critchfield
The Psychological Record
Previous studies have shown that conditional discrimination training procedures involving identity matching to complex samples can produce emergent arbitrary relations. Identity-based training with complex stimuli therefore may be a valuable procedure for efficiently generating large networks of stimulus relations. The present study was an attempt to increase the yield of emergent relations from identity-based procedures by (a) including an extra (cross-modal) stimulus among the elements of the complex sample that was not implicated directly in the experimental contingencies and (b) including this extra stimulus in overlapping stimulus sets to promote the merger of separately trained classes. Identity-based relations were taught …
