Putative Light Scalar Nonet, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz, Francesco Sannino Aug 1998

Putative Light Scalar Nonet, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz, Francesco Sannino

Physics - All Scholarship

We investigate the "family" relationship of a possible scalar nonet composed of the a_0(980), the f_0(980) and the \sigma and \kappa type states found in recent treatments of \pi\pi and \pi K scattering. We work in the effective Lagrangian framework, starting from terms which yield "ideal mixing" according to Okubo's original formulation. It is noted that there is another solution corresponding to dual ideal mixing which agrees with Jaffe's picture of scalars as qq\bar q \bar q states rather than as q\bar q states. At the Lagrangian level there is no difference in the formulation of the two cases (other …

Ron Collins Oral History Interview, 1998 August 12, Laurence Smith Aug 1998

Ron Collins Oral History Interview, 1998 August 12, Laurence Smith

Oral Histories

Ron Collins arrived at Eastern Michigan University in 1965 as Assistant Professor of Chemistry. After becoming Department Head in 1977, he was made Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1980, and then Provost in 1983 where he served until his retirement. In this interview, Collins discusses low EMU enrollment at the time of his arrival, the changes to the University over time, which Collins calls “overwhelmingly positive,” and the technological advances at Eastern. This interview was conducted for the purpose of gathering primary research for Laurence Smith’s book, Eastern Michigan University: A Sesquicentennial Portrait (1999).

The A326s Mutant Of G(Iα1) As An Approximation Of The Receptor-Bound State, Bruce A. Posner, Mark B. Mixon, Mark A. Wall, Stephen R. Sprang, Alfred G. Gilman Aug 1998

The A326s Mutant Of G(Iα1) As An Approximation Of The Receptor-Bound State, Bruce A. Posner, Mark B. Mixon, Mark A. Wall, Stephen R. Sprang, Alfred G. Gilman

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Agonist-bound heptahelical receptors activate heterotrimeric G proteins by catalyzing exchange of GDP for GTP on their α subunits. In search of an approximation of the receptor-α subunit complex, we have considered the properties of A326S G(iα1), a mutation discovered originally in G(sα) (Iiri, T., Herzmark, P., Nakamoto, J. M., Van Dop, C., and Bourne, H. R. (1994) Nature 371, 164-168) that mimics the effect of receptor on nucleotide exchange. The mutation accelerates dissociation of GDP from the α(i1)β1γ2 heterotrimer by 250-fold. Nevertheless, affinity of mutant G(iα1) for GTPγS is high in the presence of Mg2+, …

Ballistic Transport In Ultrathin Films With Random Rough Walls, A. E. Meyerovich, S. Stepaniants Aug 1998

Ballistic Transport In Ultrathin Films With Random Rough Walls, A. E. Meyerovich, S. Stepaniants

Physics Faculty Publications

We calculated transport coefficients in thin films in which the particle wavelength is comparable to the thickness of the film, and the motion across the film is quantized. The perturbative calculations are analytical almost to the very end, and result in explicit transparent expressions for the transport coefficients via the correlation function of surface inhomogeneities, density of particles, and film thickness. The final results are given for Gaussian correlations of the surface inhomogeneities. The discrete nature of the spectrum leads to a non-analyticity of transport coefficients as a function of particle density and film thickness, especially for degenerate fermions. Surface …

Semi-Automated Extraction Of Digital Objective Prism Spectra, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones, Ted Von Hippel, Mike Irwin Aug 1998

Semi-Automated Extraction Of Digital Objective Prism Spectra, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones, Ted Von Hippel, Mike Irwin

Publications

We describe a method for the extraction of spectra from high dispersion objective prism plates. Our method is a catalogue driven plate solution approach, making use of the Right Ascension and Declination coordinates for the target objects. In contrast to existing methods of photographic plate reduction, we digitize the entire plate and extract spectra off-line. This approach has the advantages that it can be applied to CCD objective prism images, and spectra can be re-extracted (or additional spectra extracted) without having to re-scan the plate. After a brief initial interactive period, the subsequent reduction procedure is completely automatic, resulting in …
