First Ever Discovery Of A Well-Preserved Skull And Associated Skeleton Of Australopithecus, Ronald J. Clarke Oct 1998

First Ever Discovery Of A Well-Preserved Skull And Associated Skeleton Of Australopithecus, Ronald J. Clarke

KIP Articles

Although 74 years have elapsed since the discovery at Taung of the first Australopithecus fossil, and despite intensive fieldwork in East Africa and 32 years of non-stop excavation at Sterkfontein, there has not been a discovery to date of a reasonably intact skull and associated skeleton of an ape-man. This is an account of the extraordinary series of events that led to just such a discovery and a preliminary assessment of the significance of the fossil, which is still largely embedded in the Member 2 breccia of the Sterkfontein Caves near Krugersdorp, South Africa.

Asian Expatriate Development: A Comparative Study Of Japanese, Korean And Singaporean Expatriates, A. Ahad M. Osman-Gani, Wee Liang Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Owing to rapid internationalization of business activity, human resource development (HRD) has become increasingly important in recent years. This is especially true when domestic human resource management takes on international dimensions as it deals more with multicultural workforce. International HRD, much of it embodied in cross-cultural training, has been proposed by many scholars as a means of facilitating more effective interaction among managers, employees and customers from different national-cultural backgrounds. Despite the need for cross-cultural skills and the shortage of managers who possess these skills, most human resource decision-makers do nothing in terms of cross-cultural training for their employees. Studies …

The Common Law "Duty To Serve" And Protection Of Consumers In An Age Of Competitive Retail Public Utility Restructuring, Jim Rossi Oct 1998

The Common Law "Duty To Serve" And Protection Of Consumers In An Age Of Competitive Retail Public Utility Restructuring, Jim Rossi

Vanderbilt Law Review

People like young Montray Cadet and his family will increasingly face the possibility of shut-off and limited access to utility services, such as telecommunications, natural gas, and electricity, as these industries-traditionally subject to obligations to serve customers-are deregulated. Already, the natural gas industry's introduction of retail competition in states like New York has been alleged to adversely affect the quality of and access to gas, essential to many New Yorkers for heating, and has led to the filing of a lawsuit against the state by consumer advocates.

Can vigorous retail competition of the type public utility deregulation envisions coexist with …

Indian Brands : Quo Vadis: The Round Table Discussion, Mithileshwar Jha Oct 1998

Indian Brands : Quo Vadis: The Round Table Discussion, Mithileshwar Jha

IIMB Management Review

Round Table features an exhaustive discussion on Indian Brands ? beginning with the definition of an 'Indian' brand and elaborating upon the origin, the home and the 'soul' of brands, the various aspects of building and managing Indian brands particularly in the face of competition from MNCs; brand extensions and how brands cope with the vagaries of the market. Several interesting issues on methodology and research were raised. In order to present a truly broad spectrum of views on brands and complement the Round Table discussion, Pradeep Kumar spoke to a cross section of marketers in various product and service …

Tqm In Management Training: An Indian Experience, Gautam Sinha

IIMB Management Review

Gautam Sinha traces the slow but sure development of Management Training Institute (MTI), Ranchi, from an in-house training institute for the managers of Steel Authority of India (SAIL) to a world-class centre of management education. Programmes at MTI have attracted participants from other industries in the public sector and in the near future, participation from the private sector is expected.

Fatigue Life Prediction Of Edge-Welded Metal Bellows Using Neural Networks And Multiple Linear Regression, David L.W. Ballard Oct 1998

Fatigue Life Prediction Of Edge-Welded Metal Bellows Using Neural Networks And Multiple Linear Regression, David L.W. Ballard

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Edge-welded metal bellows present an ongoing challenge: the prediction of an accurate cycle life. Current methods rely on physical leak detection to determine a bellow's cycle life to failure. It is known, however, that crack initiation begins many cycles before a leak path is present. Bellows manufacturers require a method for detection of fatigue cracks when they initiate but before they result in leak rates large enough to contaminate a process. Acoustic emission (AE) testing is one method which can meet this need and is a proven, reliable technique for detecting crack initiation and monitoring fatigue crack growth.

A Comparison Of Pseudo 3-Dimensional Collision Avoidance-Predictor Displays For Free Flight, Steve Kertesz Jr. Oct 1998

A Comparison Of Pseudo 3-Dimensional Collision Avoidance-Predictor Displays For Free Flight, Steve Kertesz Jr.

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study was the second of two studies to evaluate the use of a pseudo three-dimensional display to present information about future possible conflicts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate variations of a cockpit screen display that transfers relevant data to the pilot in a manner which is easy to interpret and to facilitate the possible stressful situations that may be encountered due to the proposed free flight environment. In the first phase, three display concepts, using three different screen designs were compared. In this study, three different displays, all of which used using the space-time predictor concept …

Of Sinking And Escalating: A (Somewhat) New Look At Stare Decisis, Rafael Gely Oct 1998

Of Sinking And Escalating: A (Somewhat) New Look At Stare Decisis, Rafael Gely

Faculty Publications

This article explores the concept of stare decisis from the escalation of commitment perspective. I argue that the theory of escalation of commitment provides a powerful tool that can be used in our understanding of the application of stare decisis . The literature on the use of precedent is extensive; however, this Article develops a new way of looking at case law development and stare decisis . In particular, the Article contemplates stare decisis as a decision-making process and then considers the academic literature in order that we may gain some insight into that process.
