Patterns Of Time, Place, And Culture: Land Use Zoning In Portland, Oregon, 1918-1924, Meg Merrick
Patterns Of Time, Place, And Culture: Land Use Zoning In Portland, Oregon, 1918-1924, Meg Merrick
Dissertations and Theses
Until recently, few have questioned the notion that the separation of uses in land use zoning is inherently correct. Many observers of the city are now suggesting that zoning, as it has been practiced in this country over the last 80 years, has created cities that are fractured and function poorly. Others propose that zoning should be reconsidered as a remedy for urban dysfunction. They suggest that the whole notion of zoning be rethought.
The purpose of this study is to uncover some of the underlying rationales and methodologies that set the model for zoning. This study examines the rationales …

The Use Of Red Mud/Gypsum To Reduce Water Pollution From Sandy Soils Used For Vegetable Production, Ian Mcpharlin, W. J. Robertson, R. C. Jeffery
Research Reports
An important domestic and export vegetable industry is located on the sands of the Swan Coastal Plain (SCP) in Western Australia. The total value of the vegetable industry on the SCP was estimated at $90M in 1996/7 or about 50% of the total value of the industry. This vegetable production has been located on good quality sands such as the Spearwood and yellow Karrakatta sands, close to the coast, since the 1950s. However in recent years competition for this land for urban and industrial use has forced vegetable production onto soils with poorer water and phosphorus retention capacity such as …

The National Eutrophication Management Program (NEMP) and Environment Australia convened a workshop to develop a coherent overview of the sources and transport of diffuse phosphorus in Australian catchments based on the latest knowledge. The Land and Water Resources Research and Development Corporation (LWRRDC) and the Murray–Darling Basin Commission (MDBC) jointly fund NEMP. A select group of scientists attended the workshop and developed a coherent statement about phosphorus sources and transport in Australian catchments. The group did not extend this statement to include recommended management practices. This paper reports the findings from the workshop. State governments have developed algal and nutrient …
"None Of Us Are Androgynous": Androgyny In William Faulkner's "The Wild Palms", Teresa Russell Dawsey
"None Of Us Are Androgynous": Androgyny In William Faulkner's "The Wild Palms", Teresa Russell Dawsey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Androgyny in literature is not a new topic. In William Faulkner's The Wild Palms, however, the significance of androgyny as theme has been largely overlooked. Androgyny is defined as the harmonious balance derived from accepting those individual aspects defined culturally and socially as masculine and feminine beyond the physical and biological. In this novel, Harry Wilbourne, a doctor and scientist, denies his androgyny while Charlotte Rittenmeyer, his lover and a sculptor, finds comfort and harmony in both her masculine and feminine traits. Harry faces a gender identity crisis when Charlotte, pregnant, decides to abort their child. Only after Charlotte dies …

Analytical Study Of Capability Maturity Model Using Content Analysis, Dhaval Ranjitlal Sheth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Content analysis is used to investigate the essence of the Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Model (CMM) through associated software process evaluation instruments. This study yields lexical maps of key terms from each questionnaire. The content analysis is studied in three possible ways for each of the questionnaires: By question, by key process area, and by maturity level. These maps are named suitably. Super network and distribution maps are used for finding relations among the maps. Analysis of the key terms from the maps are compared to extract the essence of CMM and the ability of the questionnaires to adequately …
Assessment Of Bond For Cathodically Polarized Pretensioning Steel In Concrete, Knut Herman Dohlen
Assessment Of Bond For Cathodically Polarized Pretensioning Steel In Concrete, Knut Herman Dohlen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Pretensioned concrete members require a certain bond strength between the steel and concrete to maintain prestress force. Previous studies have indicated that when reinforcing steel in concrete is cathodically polarized, a chemical change of the cement near the steel-concrete interface occurs; and this can reduce the bond strength. In the present research experiments were conducted with concrete specimens that contained either a non-stressed seven wire steel tendon or a single strand through the longitudinal direction. The specimens were cathodically polarized with current densities ranging between 50 and 2500 mA/m^2 of steel. Upon achieving a pre-determined charge density transfer, the steel …
Anthony Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange" And Michel Foucault's "Panopticism", Erika Dawn Brown
Anthony Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange" And Michel Foucault's "Panopticism", Erika Dawn Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange offers a "disciplinary technology," the "Ludovico Technique," which resembles Michel Foucault's interpretation of Jeremy Bentham's architectural figure, the Panopticon. Burgess's novel functions analogously to Foucault's image of the panopticon by dehumanizing and controlling the criminal, Alex, by omniscient, omnipotent surveillance, and also by disciplining the reader to assimilate an ambiguous vernacular language: the reader is "trained" by panopticonic techniques to read and interpret the novel.
Analysis Of The Performance Of A Loop Radiator And A Spiral Applicator At Low Rf Frequencies, John M. Roman
Analysis Of The Performance Of A Loop Radiator And A Spiral Applicator At Low Rf Frequencies, John M. Roman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
This thesis addresses the electromagnetic analyses of two structures. The first structure, a low frequency loop antenna recommended for use by national standards on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), is incorrectly specified to have the same voltage to magnetic field conversion ratio (antenna factor) when used with a 50 ohm receiver in lieu of a high impedance type ($>$600 ohm). Two independent measurement sets were performed to demonstrate the prevailing discrepancy, and a corrected antenna factor is presented for use with a 50 ohm receiver. The second structure, a partial spiral "pancake" applicator used to generate high EM fields in its …

Biosynthetic Production Of Pseudopterosin C: An Anti-Inflammatory Agent From A Marine Soft Coral, Laura D. Mydlarz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Pseudopterosin C is a novel diterpene glycoside isolated from the Caribbean gorgonian coral, Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae. Pseudopterosin C is non-steroidal and has been shown to exhibit promising anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The in vitro production of pseudopterosin C through biosynthetic methods has been examined. A cell-free system as well as an enzyme precipitate capable of transforming terpene precursors to the product has been developed. The parameters toward optimizing the enzymatic production through cofactor requirements, differing terpene precursors and sugars were investigated.
Atomic Displacements In Transition Metals, Nassrin Y. Moghadam
Atomic Displacements In Transition Metals, Nassrin Y. Moghadam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Using the order-N locally-self-consistent multiple scattering (LSMS) method, we carry out first-principles studies of the displacement of atoms from their average sites in the vicinity of a vacancy and transition metal impurities in copper. Our approach is to relax the first nearest neighbor distance and to calculate total energy for a number of relaxed geometries. We then obtain the equilibrium configuration of the nuclei from minimization of the total energy.
Assessing Organizational Effectiveness: The Impact Of Drug Court Processes On Offender Behavior Change, Scott Robert Senjo
Assessing Organizational Effectiveness: The Impact Of Drug Court Processes On Offender Behavior Change, Scott Robert Senjo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The issue of drugs and crime maintains a high rank among the complexities which confront the American system of criminal justice. The "treatment drug court" represents an innovative response by policymakers to address drug use and its relationship to criminal activity. Treatment drug court is a court-monitored drug treatment program for people arrested for felony use or possession of illegal drugs. Many defendants select the drug court option rather than probation because most drug courts will dismiss the original felony charges upon successful completion of the court's drug treatment program. This dissertation is a focus on the unique "collaborative support" …
Announcement-Specific Stock Market And Currency Market Overreaction And Under-Reaction, Stephen James Larson
Announcement-Specific Stock Market And Currency Market Overreaction And Under-Reaction, Stephen James Larson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
This study documents the nature of the underlying information that caused investor overreaction and under-reaction. While research has documented the existence of market overreaction and under-reaction, it has not comprehensively addressed the underlying information releases that caused the extreme price fluctuations. This study controls for the underlying announcements, and finds that the degrees of overreaction and under-reaction vary according to the underlying information releases. A primary contribution of this dissertation is the finding that undefined events are associated with higher degrees of overreaction than defined events. The Wall Street Journal Index was used to determine if each event had an …
Comparative Studies Of Retinal Design Among Sea Turtles: Histological And Behavioral Correlates Of The Visual Streak, Lisa Joy Decarlo
Comparative Studies Of Retinal Design Among Sea Turtles: Histological And Behavioral Correlates Of The Visual Streak, Lisa Joy Decarlo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
We understand very little about the relationships between eye anatomy and visual ecology in sea turtles. Sea turtles use visual information in important contexts, such as selecting habitats, detecting predators, or locating mates or food. This study represents an effort to clarify the form/function relationship between retinal morphology and the behavioral ecology of sea turtle hatchlings. Thus, it is an important first step in relating sea turtle eye anatomy with visual ecology and relating the two to sea turtle natural history. Some organisms possess retinas that contain morphologically specialized cellular areas. The "visual streak," is one such area; receptor cells …

Dynamics Of Attitudes: Individual Beliefs To Cultural Norms, Helen C. Harton
Dynamics Of Attitudes: Individual Beliefs To Cultural Norms, Helen C. Harton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Dynamic social impact theory (DSIT; Latane, 1996a; 1996b), a macro-level theory of social influence, predicts that discussion will lead to a self-organization of public opinion through decreasing minority sizes, increasing spatial similarity, and emerging correlations. The catastrophe theory of attitudes (CTA; Latane & Nowak, 1994), a micro-level theory, suggests that attitudes are a joint function of issue involvement and information favorability. This paper describes the predictions leading from these theories separately and as integrated and meta-analytically combines analyses of almost 500 students discussing social and political issues over a computer network with twenty previous studies testing aspects of CTA. The …
Dinah's Voice: A Contemporary Analysis Of Genesis 34 In "What Dinah Thought" And "The Red Tent", Barbara Mehl Boxenbaum
Dinah's Voice: A Contemporary Analysis Of Genesis 34 In "What Dinah Thought" And "The Red Tent", Barbara Mehl Boxenbaum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Contrary to the generally accepted interpretation of Genesis 34 that Dinah, daughter of Jacob and Leah, was raped, What Dinah Thought, by Deena Metzger, and The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant, clearly state that Dinah loved Shechem, the man who was alleged to have raped her, and had consensual sexual relations with him. These twentieth century American novels are written in the rabbinic tradition of interpreting biblical verse, known as midrash. Metzger recreates Dinah as a contemporary Jewish woman, who travels to Israel to find and marry the reincarnated Shechem, a contemporary Arab. In contrast, Diamant imagines Dinah's life in …
Effects Of Adaptation On The Perception Of Motion: The Influence Of Competing Mechanisms, Jessica K. Espinoza
Effects Of Adaptation On The Perception Of Motion: The Influence Of Competing Mechanisms, Jessica K. Espinoza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The effects of adaptation on motion were investigated using a modified apparent motion display. Unlike the classical apparent motion display, a BRLC (background relative luminance contrast) apparent motion display consists of two visible dots, each of a different luminance, which remain in the same position but exchange luminances on successive frames. This forms a bistable stimulus; stationarity-flicker or motion may be perceived, depending on the value of the BRLC. There was a significant interaction between condition (baseline or adaptation) and BRLC when testing motion perception following adaptation to a moving stimulus, a flickering stimulus and a static stimulus. Additionally, adaptation …

Ethics Of Courtship In Three Novels By Anthony Trollope, Flora Solana Rigolo
Ethics Of Courtship In Three Novels By Anthony Trollope, Flora Solana Rigolo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Anthony Trollope's novels provide insight into the courtship rituals of the Victorian Era. Three novels in particular, Miss Mackenzie, The American Senator, and The Way We Live Now, are analyzed in this thesis. Primary emphasis is placed on the social and moral repercussions that result when women violate the subtle codes of courtship. Honesty versus lying, the difficulties of the older woman, the creation of individual identity within a restrictive society, the definition of a "lady," and the laws pertaining to marriage rights are my major focal points. Trollope rewards and punishes his female characters based on his version of …
Effects Of Teaching Mathematics To Learning Style Perceptual Preference On Academic Achievement Of Seventh-Grade Middle School Students, Rosemary Colarulli
Effects Of Teaching Mathematics To Learning Style Perceptual Preference On Academic Achievement Of Seventh-Grade Middle School Students, Rosemary Colarulli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Teaching methods that are effective with some students, fail with other students, because students perceive and process information differently. The personal preference by which one perceives and processes new material is called one's learning style. Using the Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Inventory assessment instrument, the learning style perceptual preference of 262 seventh grade students from a large, urban, middle school in southeast Florida were identified. This research investigated the effects of teaching mathematics to the preferred perceptual preference of these students in terms of academic achievement. Four teachers were trained in the Dunn and Dunn learning style teaching model …
Estimation Of Atmospheric Gaseous Absorption Using Surface And Radiosonde Meteorological Measurements, Ritsuko Hamahata Pollard
Estimation Of Atmospheric Gaseous Absorption Using Surface And Radiosonde Meteorological Measurements, Ritsuko Hamahata Pollard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
For radiowave propagation on earth-space communication links at high frequencies such as Ka-band, the effect of atmospheric gaseous absorption (mainly due to oxygen and water vapor) is the primary cause of attenuation. This thesis examines the applicability of the surface based Crane's model currently employed by the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) propagation experiment for estimation of attenuation due to atmospheric gaseous absorption (AGA), developed for Oklahoma, to sub-tropical climate regions such as Florida. The Microwave Propagation Model is used as a basis of comparison since it uses the direct atmospheric measurements (temperature, relative humidity, and pressure) made at different …
Evaluation Of Monoclonal Antibody Technology For The Species-Specific Identification Of Centropomus Undecimalis, Christopher Samuel Potter
Evaluation Of Monoclonal Antibody Technology For The Species-Specific Identification Of Centropomus Undecimalis, Christopher Samuel Potter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
A fusion was conducted using spleen cells from a hyperimmunized Balb/C mouse and a murine myeloma cell line, in an attempt to create monoclonal antibodies specific to parvalbumin from Centropomus undecimalis. The fusion protocol utilized a 24 well culture plate protocol. Initial results indicated the successful generation of antibody producing hybridomas specific to the desired parvalbumin; however, attempts to isolate and clone these cells were unsuccessful. The study results clearly demonstrate some potential drawbacks to using the 24-well fusion protocol versus a 96-well protocol. The 24-well protocol seems to favor rapidly growing non-secreting cells due to the lower dilutions involved. …

Estimation Of Information: Theoretics-Based Delay Bounds Of Mpeg Traffic Over Atm Networks, Shuba. Jagannathan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
This thesis addresses a method to deduce the statistical bounds associated with the cell-transfer delay variations (CDVs) encountered by the cells of MPEG traffic, transmitted in the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. This study focuses on: (1) Estimating CDV arising from multiplexing/switching for both constant bit rate (CBR) and variable bit rate (VBR) traffics via priority allocation based simulations. (2) Developing an information-theoretics based technique to get an insight of the combined BER-induced and multiplexing/switching-induced CDVs in ATM networks. Algorithms pertinent to CDV statistics are derived and the lower and upper bounds of the statistics are obtained via simulations in …
Event Type And Individual Differences In Children's False-Memory Creation, Rhonda Douglas Brown
Event Type And Individual Differences In Children's False-Memory Creation, Rhonda Douglas Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
This series of experiments was designed to address two major questions concerning children's false-memory creation: (1) Are events that involve physical harm content more difficult to implant than events that do not involve physical harm content? and (2) Are individuals with particular cognitive and personality attributes more likely to create false-memories than others? In Experiment 1, 27 first-graders were presented with descriptions of two fictitious events (1 physical harm, 1 no physical harm) and two true events (1 physical harm, 1 no physical harm). Furthermore, individual differences in image descriptions, inhibition, verbal intelligence, working memory capacity and teacher ratings of …
Variances In Meta-Analysis, Katherine L B Humphreys
Variances In Meta-Analysis, Katherine L B Humphreys
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Meta-analysis is a statistical method of combining many individual analyses. This thesis reviews the need for meta-analysis; the many statistical consideration facing the meta-analyst; and some of Hedges' results concerning the combined estimate of effect size with unequal weights from his 1981 and 1982 papers. Unequal weights used to combine estimates of effect size in meta-analysis are derived using the variances given by the large sample, normal approximation of the distribution of Hedges' unbiased estimates of effect sizes. These variances depend on the effect size and the sample sizes of both experimental and control groups. This creates circular definitions and …

This paper presents the first analysis of diffractive photon dissociation events in deep inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA in which the proton in the final state is detected and its momentum measured. The events are selected by requiring a scattered proton in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer (LPS) with xL > 0.97, where xL is the fraction of the incoming proton beam momentum carried by the scattered proton. The use of the LPS significantly reduces the contamination from events with diffractive dissociation of the proton into low mass states and allows a direct measurement of t, the square of the four-momentum …

Dijet cross sections are presented using photoproduction data obtained with the ZEUS detector during 1994. These measurements represent an extension of previous results, as the higher statistics allow cross sections to be measured at higher jet transverse energy (ETjet). Jets are identified in the hadronic final state using three different algorithms, and the cross sections compared to complete next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Agreement with these calculations is seen for the pseudorapidity dependence of the direct photon events with ETjet > 6 GeV and of the resolved photon events with ETjet > 11 GeV. Calculated cross sections for resolved photon processes with 6 …
