Analytic Gain And Phase Margin Design, Chaouki T. Abdallah, D. Famularo, Peter Dorato Jan 1998

Analytic Gain And Phase Margin Design, Chaouki T. Abdallah, D. Famularo, Peter Dorato

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In 5, algorithms are presented for analytic gain and phase margin design. Without special care however, the compensator computed with this algorithm is not a real rational function. In 3, it is shown that with some care, a real rational compensator for phase margin design can be computed from the theory in 5. In this paper both gain and phase margin problems are reduced to interpolation problems with positive-real functions, which saves a step in the algorithm shown in 5, where interpolation is done with bounded-real functions, in the case of gain margin design.

Striking The Rock: Confronting Gender Equality In South Africa, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

This Article analyzes the status of women's rights in the newly democratic South Africa. It examines rights guaranteed in the Constitution and conflicts between the principle of gender equality and the recognition of indigenous law and institutions. The Article focuses on the South African transition to democracy and theinfluence that feminist agitation at the international level has had on South African women's attempts at political organization. After dissecting the historical position of customary law in South Africa and questioning its place in the new democratic regime, the author argues that, although South African women have benefited from the global feminist …

The Effect Of Pre-Interview Training And Warnings On Children's Eyewitness Testimonies, Julie A. Jost Jan 1998

The Effect Of Pre-Interview Training And Warnings On Children's Eyewitness Testimonies, Julie A. Jost

Theses : Honours

The present study examined two important issues regarding children's eyewitness testimonies -compliance which is the tendency to agree with misleading questions and the misinformation effect whereby participants incorporate misleading postevent information into their memory recall of the original event. Eighty six primary school children (6-8 years) watched a video, listened to a misleading narrative and were then interviewed individually. To reduce compliance half the children received a pre-interview training package composed of instructions and practice questions with 'neither' and 'don't know' response options. To reduce the misinformation effect children were given a warning that they may have heard some misleading …

The Psychosocial Correlates Of Cigarette Smoking Among Tertiary Students, Tina Hankins Jan 1998

The Psychosocial Correlates Of Cigarette Smoking Among Tertiary Students, Tina Hankins

Theses : Honours

The present study was undertaken to examine the relative contribution of psychosocial variables toward tertiary student smoking behaviour, and their ability to distinguish smokers from non-smokers, or smokers from ex-smokers, amongst this population. Given the higher prevalence of cigarette smoking amongst females of this age group, the psychosocial variables distinguishing female smokers from female non-smokers in the tertiary education system were also examined. It was hypothesised that smoking status of tertiary students would be associated more with their attitude toward smoking than environmental factors. Furthermore, it was hypothesised females would place less emphasis on participation in sporting activities than males, …

Biometrics : An Exploration And Analysis Of User Acceptance Issues, Brendan J. O'Loughlin

Theses : Honours

The security industry has undergone dramatic growth over the last twenty years due to a burgeoning of demand for security products and services. The protection of people, assets and information has been prominent among the concerns of business, industry and the broader community. Crimes against domestic, commercial, and industrial premises, small and large, are a commonplace occurrence and security has therefore become an essential component of any facility's continual operation. The security industry has been quick to respond to these concerns through the rapid development of a wide range of products and services. Growth in security as an academic discipline …

Results Of Investigations Into The Groundwater Response And Productivity Of High Water Use Agricultural Systems 1990-1997 4. Tkk Engineering's Catchment (Williams), A D. Smith, Richard J. George Dr, P R. Scott, D L. Bennett, R J. Rippon, G J. Orr

Resource management technical reports

High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on a 70 ha catchment located about 15 km north of Williams, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 545 mm annual rainfall and 1870 mm annual evaporation. Development of salinity is characterised by passive discharge upslope from a dolerite dyke. Because recharge exceeds the discharge capacity of current seeps, there is potential for new seeps to develop in the mid to lower slopes.

Who Speaks For The Rio Jemez? A Management Plan For The Lower Jemez River Basin, Tom Krause Jan 1998

Who Speaks For The Rio Jemez? A Management Plan For The Lower Jemez River Basin, Tom Krause

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Rio Jemez Watershed can logically be divided into an upper watershed and a lower watershed based on terrain, climate, and river characteristics. Water in the upper watershed is plentiful and more than adequate to meet the water rights claims located there. However, water in the lower watershed is not adequate to meet claims throughout the growing season of April through October. Irrigation diversions use all of the available water in the river during the months of July, August, and September, often leaving the Rio Jemez a dry channel below the community of San Ysidro. This practice has negative impacts …

"Yer Outa Here!" A Framework For Analyzing The Potential Exclusion Of Expert Testimony Under The Federal Rules Of Evidence, Stephen D. Easton Jan 1998

"Yer Outa Here!" A Framework For Analyzing The Potential Exclusion Of Expert Testimony Under The Federal Rules Of Evidence, Stephen D. Easton

University of Richmond Law Review

It does not take long for even a casual observer of criminal and civil trials to make two observations about expert witnesses. The first of these observations comes almost immediately: experts are vitally important to the judicial process. In many trials, the outcome largely depends upon which set of impressively credentialed experts the jurors (and the judge) believe. The second observation generally comes later than the first: a significant amount of shoddy "science," phony logic, faulty analysis, sleight of hand, and other assorted junk enters the courtroom dressed up in the emperor's clothes of expert testimony.

The Collapse And Fall Of Floating Buffer Zones: The Court Clarifies Analysis For Reviewing Speech-Restrictive Injunctions In Schenk V. Pro-Choice Network, Amy E. Miller Jan 1998

The Collapse And Fall Of Floating Buffer Zones: The Court Clarifies Analysis For Reviewing Speech-Restrictive Injunctions In Schenk V. Pro-Choice Network, Amy E. Miller

University of Richmond Law Review

The freedom of speech, although a predominant First Amendment principle, does not create an absolute right and remains subject to limitations for appropriate reasons, such as when the exercise of free speech encroaches upon the rights of others. Particularly sensitive situations arise when courts impose restrictions upon anti-abortion protestors in an attempt to protect the rights of patients and providers at abortion clinics. Indeed, despite a woman's long established right to obtain an abortion, emotionally charged demonstrations and recurrent anti-choice violence persist outside abortion clinics around the nation. Given that such practices induce stress and other health risks to women …

A Matter Of Power: Structural Federalism And Separation Doctrine In The Present, Frances Howell Rudko Jan 1998

A Matter Of Power: Structural Federalism And Separation Doctrine In The Present, Frances Howell Rudko

University of Richmond Law Review

Public reaction to the 1823 Supreme Court decision in Green v. Biddle prompted John Marshall's letter to Henry Clay, who had argued the case as amicus curiae for the defendant. The letter is significant because Marshall, who had been a legislator himself, candidly expresses not only his personal dissatisfaction with the congressional assault on the 1823 decision but also the constitutional basis for his opinion. The significance of Marshall's extrajudicial opinion becomes more apparent when it is considered in the aftermath of the recent tug-of-war between Congress and the Court which culminated in the decision in City of Boerne v. …

Advisory Opinions By Federal Courts, Phillip M. Kannan Jan 1998

Advisory Opinions By Federal Courts, Phillip M. Kannan

University of Richmond Law Review

Since 1793, the affirmative grant of authority to federal courts in Article III of the Constitution to hear and decide cases or controversies has been interpreted to prohibit these courts from giving advisory opinions. In that year, United States Supreme Court Chief Justice Jay, Justice Cushing, and District Judge Duane rejected a provision in a 1792 act of Congress that would have required the Supreme Court to settle federal pension claims of widows and orphans subject to the approval of the Secretary of War. The basis for the position taken by the Chief Justice was "that neither the legislative nor …
