Course Insight Portfolio: Math 2070 Business Calculus Ii, Samuel Ajibola, Zachariah Baer, Kensey Doughtie, Abby Hyatt

Publications

MATH 2070 - Business Calculus II, is a course that most students in the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business will likely take, but can also meet the mathematics requirement for many majors outside of the College of Science and the College of Engineering, Computing, and Applied Sciences. Like most second semester calculus courses, it requires decent foundations in both algebraic manipulation and derivation to succeed, skills that students will prove through pre-college examination and by passing a first calculus course. Where it differs from a STEM-oriented calculus II course is that it goes beyond integration, touching on …

Evidence-Based Practice In Speech-Language Pathology: Creating Effective Therapy Materials, Avalee Dunkley May 2026

Evidence-Based Practice In Speech-Language Pathology: Creating Effective Therapy Materials, Avalee Dunkley

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Evidence-based practice is a fairly new topic in speech-language pathology, gaining traction among professionals in the field in the last twenty years. Evidence-based practice is the integration of high-quality research, patient cultural and social values, and clinician expertise to treat a patient. Patients are more likely to progress when these three factors are combined. This paper explores four areas of speech-language pathology that are commonly treated in school-aged children: speech sound disorders, language disorders, social communication disorders, and the use of augmentative and alternative communication. Each section gives a summary of the disorder and how the disorder can be treated …

Nutrition Teaching Methods In Communities, Emery Fayth Rowles May 2026

Nutrition Teaching Methods In Communities, Emery Fayth Rowles

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Community is a vital part of non-formal education. A sense of, longing for, and responsibility towards community draws individuals to participate in local services and classes. Community has been shown to have positive impacts on learning, self efficacy, and health.

Many of the techniques used in education mirror techniques used in building community—such as the use of small group discussions and cultural sensitivity—but with distinct differences in mindset. Most educational approaches see the acquisition and use of knowledge as the key purpose of the program and evaluate participants on an individual basis. This approach makes sense for programs meant to …

Fragile Patients, Intentional Care: Nonpharmacological Pain Management Treatment Approaches In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Nicu), Kristie A. Moeller

Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations

The aim of this project was to increase clinical skills in a level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and explore how nonpharmacological occupational therapy (OT) interventions impact pain management in the NICU for a variety of patients. Due to the increasing rates of admissions to the NICU and the impact that pain has on child development there was a clear need to gain skills to create interventions that would minimize the effect on infant development (Martin & Osterman, 2025; Pineda et al., 2025). The needs assessment revealed the need for occupational therapists (OTs) role in nonpharmacological pain management to …

Ccr5 Sulfopeptide Library And O-Glycosylated Amino Acids As Chemical Tools For Probing Chemokine Receptor Recognition, Mostafa Mohammed Mohammed Ali Eldeen May 2026

Ccr5 Sulfopeptide Library And O-Glycosylated Amino Acids As Chemical Tools For Probing Chemokine Receptor Recognition, Mostafa Mohammed Mohammed Ali Eldeen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chemokine-receptor interactions play a central role in immune regulation and disease pathogenesis, particularly through CCR5, a receptor engaged by chemokines such as CCL3, CCL4, and CCL5. Post-translational modifications of the CCR5 N-terminus—including tyrosine sulfation at positions 3, 10, 14, and 15, and O-glycosylation at serine 6—critically modulate chemokine recognition and selectivity. However, the impact of specific sulfation patterns on chemokine binding and the synergistic effects of combined sulfation and glycosylation remain incompletely understood. This thesis presents a two-project chemical approach to systematically investigate CCR5 post-translational modifications. In Project 1, a comprehensive 16-member library of CCR5???? sulfopeptides representing all possible combinations …

Study Of Binary Hypothesis Testing Using Deep Learning, Sadhana Geddam May 2026

Study Of Binary Hypothesis Testing Using Deep Learning, Sadhana Geddam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Binary hypothesis testing is a fundamental problem in statistical signal processing and decision theory, with applications in communications, radar systems, and distributed sensor networks. Classical approaches, particularly the likelihood ratio test (LRT), provide optimal detection performance when the underlying probability distributions are known. However, in many practical scenarios, the resulting decision rules can become analytically complex or computationally intensive, especially in multi-sensor and dependent data settings.

This thesis investigates the use of neural networks for binary hypothesis testing under diverse statistical conditions. A data-driven framework is developed to learn decision rules directly from observed data, enabling the approximation of likelihood …

A Revised Quantifier Variance And Its Implications On Vagueness, Isaac Alexander Huling May 2026

A Revised Quantifier Variance And Its Implications On Vagueness, Isaac Alexander Huling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper argues that the Special Composition Question has no substantive answer, not because compositional talk is empty but because the physical structure it tracks does not have the form that would privilege a unique answer. The argument accepts Sider’s methodological premise that the world must provide structure beyond description if ontological vocabulary is to mean anything, and deploys that apparatus against his specific application of it to composition. Constraint processes among a system’s parts – the forces and interactions that hold rigid bodies together, maintain organisms, bind solar systems – satisfy every condition Lewis required of reference magnets. They …

Murdoch's Metaphorical And Mystical Moral Metaphysics, William Jade Langley May 2026

Murdoch's Metaphorical And Mystical Moral Metaphysics, William Jade Langley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this project, I explain the mysticism found in Iris Murdoch’s The Sovereignty of Good, emphasizing what the illustrative thought experiments and metaphors are meant to explain. To do this, I introduce her understanding of G. E Moore’s moral realism and compare this with how Bertrand Russell understands mystical intuition and revelation. Then, to understand how we can still do moral philosophy when morality is fundamentally mystical, I compare Murdoch’s usage of metaphor with that of Victoria Welby, who also takes metaphorical understanding to be crucial to our understanding of the world. Though Welby goes further than Murdoch in saying …

Semantically Grounded Evaluation For Open-Vocabulary Human-Object Interaction Detection, Maja Noack May 2026

Semantically Grounded Evaluation For Open-Vocabulary Human-Object Interaction Detection, Maja Noack

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Open-vocabulary human–object interaction (HOI) detection is a step towards building scal¬able systems that generalize to unseen interactions in real-world scenarios and support grounded multimodal systems that reason about human–object relationships. However, stan¬dard evaluation metrics, such as mean Average Precision (mAP), treat HOI classes as dis¬crete categorical labels and fail to credit semantically valid but lexically different predictions (e.g., “lean on couch” vs. “sit on couch”), limiting their applicability for evaluating open-vocabulary predictions that go beyond any predefined set of HOI labels. I introduce SHOE (Semantic HOI Open-Vocabulary Evaluation), a new evaluation framework that incorporates semantic similarity between predicted and ground-truth …

Board-Level Operating System Infrastructure In Rust, Lydia Klaus May 2026

Board-Level Operating System Infrastructure In Rust, Lydia Klaus

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Memory and multi-threading problems are the cause of many exploits and security vulnerabilities, and errors of this nature are easy to cause in programming languages such as C and C++. Despite this, these languages are still heavily used for systems programming and underpin the majority of operating system kernels. This is partially due to a lack of suitable replacements; however, Rust is becoming more prominent as an option for systems programming. This language features a much more stringent approach to memory and multi-threading safety. It also aims to support a wide range of hardware targets, including microcontrollers, which have long …

Side-To-Side Differences In Three-Dimensional Femoral Head Coverage Associated With Initial Symptom Development In Patients With Bilateral Developmental Dysplasia Of The Hip, Jiayi Sun May 2026

Side-To-Side Differences In Three-Dimensional Femoral Head Coverage Associated With Initial Symptom Development In Patients With Bilateral Developmental Dysplasia Of The Hip, Jiayi Sun

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is characterized by insufficient acetabular coverage of the femoral head and is a recognized cause of hip pain, instability, and early osteoarthritis. Although bilateral deformity is common, symptoms often first develop in only one hip. The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine whether, in patients with bilateral DDH, side-to-side differences in three-dimensional (3D) femoral head coverage vary according to radiographic symmetry defined by the lateral center-edge angle (LCEA); and (2) to determine whether hips that appear radiographically symmetric still demonstrate focal 3D asymmetry.

This retrospective imaging-based study included patients with bilateral DDH …

Vaccines, Religious Liberty, And The Gvr As Doctrinal Signal, Zalman Rothschild May 2026

Vaccines, Religious Liberty, And The Gvr As Doctrinal Signal, Zalman Rothschild

Articles

This Essay proceeds in four Parts. Part I traces the doctrinal baseline, showing that vaccines have long functioned as the limit case for religious liberty. Part II briefly describes the doctrinal changes of the COVID-19 era — the Supreme Court’s expansion of religious equality doctrine, and its emergency-docket denials that left vaccine mandates formally unresolved — before explaining why the GVR in Miller signals a different move: the extension of the religious liberty framework to vaccine mandates, bypassing the comparability analysis that had allowed most courts to sustain them under the equality model. Part III turns to Miller itself and …

Muller, Marisa Meyer, Amira Al-Uzri, Russell Mcculloh, Chi D. Hornik, Stephen J. Balevic, Rachel G. Greenberg, Daniel K. Benjamin, Sarah G. Anderson, Daniel Gonzalez

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Pentobarbital is a barbiturate with sedative and anticonvulsant properties, occasionally used in pediatric patients for preoperative sedation, deep sedation during mechanical ventilation, and seizure control. Despite its long-standing clinical use, age-appropriate dosing remains challenging due to variability across studies and limited pediatric pharmacokinetic (PK) data. This study (NCT01431326) aimed to characterize the population pharmacokinetics of pentobarbital in pediatric patients (birth to 21 years) and evaluate dosing strategies using model-based simulations. A two-compartment population PK model, allometrically scaled to total body weight, adequately described pentobarbital plasma concentrations, with no additional covariates identified as significant. Simulations were conducted across four age groups: …

Cell-Type Specific Control Of Visual Fixation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Meagan Leung May 2026

Cell-Type Specific Control Of Visual Fixation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Meagan Leung

Biological Sciences

Navigation in complex environments requires precise visual processing. To move effectively through their surroundings, animals must orient toward and maintain fixation on objects of interest to preserve a stable heading. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this behavior remain poorly understood. We use Drosophila melanogaster as our model organism because its visual behavior can be precisely measured and the availability of genetic tools which enables us to perturb the underlying neural circuits. Using a closed-loop virtual reality environment combined with locomotion tracking, we developed a stimulus protocol that reliably elicits fixation responses. To determine whether specific visual neurons drive fixation responses, …

Supply Constraints And Domestic Migration As Drivers Of U.S. Housing Price Appreciation, Vasu Patel May 2026

Supply Constraints And Domestic Migration As Drivers Of U.S. Housing Price Appreciation, Vasu Patel

Economics

When the Federal Reserve raised rates from near zero to 525 basis points between 2022 and 2023, standard theory predicted a broad correction in U.S. housing market. In most metropolitan areas, that correction did not arrive. This paper examines why housing price appreciation persisted across cities with fundamentally different structural characteristics, and which factors best explain the cross-city variation in appreciation rates observed across the nation. Using a panel of 83 Metropolitan Statistical Areas across four symmetric 24-month periods from December 2017 through December 2025, each aligned with a distinct Federal Reserve rate period, the study estimates OLS models with …

Low-Cost Rf Exposure Monitoring With Tinyml Prediction, Sanad Sahawneh May 2026

Low-Cost Rf Exposure Monitoring With Tinyml Prediction, Sanad Sahawneh

Nanoscale Science & Engineering (discontinued with class year 2014)

The proliferation of wireless technologies has produced a dense, increasingly heterogeneous radio-frequency (RF) environment that surrounds modern life. While regulatory bodies such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) maintain exposure guidelines, the tools that ordinary people, educators, and small institutions can use to actually observe RF exposure in their own spaces remain expensive, specialized, and largely confined to professional laboratories. Spectrum analyzers and calibrated field probes routinely cost between five hundred and one hundred thousand dollars per unit, placing continuous local monitoring out of reach for most environments where exposure questions are most natural …

A New Approach To Generate Combinatorial Patterns In Logical Analysis Of Data And Its Application To Predict College Retention, Salihah Ahmed E. Jaafari

Theses and Dissertations

Student retention and degree completion remain central challenges for higher-education institutions, with significant implications for student success, institutional effectiveness, and public accountability. While advances in predictive analytics have enabled earlier identification of students at risk of withdrawal, many commonly used machine learning approaches suffer from limited interpretability, constraining their practical usefulness for advising, intervention, and policy decision making. This dissertation addresses the problem of predicting student persistence by developing and evaluating optimization based, interpretable classification models within the Logical Analysis of Data (LAD) framework. Building on existing LAD formulations, this research introduces two novel pattern generation models, the Best Term …

Hdra-Fusion: Hybrid Detection With Routed Architecture For Manipulation-Aware Ai Face Forgery Detection, Omar Ebeid May 2026

Hdra-Fusion: Hybrid Detection With Routed Architecture For Manipulation-Aware Ai Face Forgery Detection, Omar Ebeid

Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence-based image generation and manipulation tools, it is extremely difficult to detect if an image is genuine or artificially crafted. Despite extensive research in this area, existing image detection systems suffer from three major problems: suboptimal cross-dataset generalization due to shortcut learning of dataset-specific patterns, unreliable probability estimates due to domain shift, particularly in cross-manipulation evaluation settings, and an inability to detect images manipulated by multiple types of manipulations within a single detection framework. To address these limitations, we propose HDRA-Fusion (Hybrid Detection with Routed Architecture), a framework built on the conclusion that different …

Hybrid Machine Learning For Zero-Day Malware Detection: An Adaptive Static-Dynamic Analysis Approach, Garrett Farmer

Theses and Dissertations

In an era of swiftly evolving cyber threats, zero-day malware continues to be one of the most challenging classes of attacks to detect and mitigate. Traditional signature-based methods often fail to detect novel malicious code, leaving institutions vulnerable to unknown exploits. This thesis proposes a machine learning (ML)-based framework that is designed to detect unknown malware variants. By combining both static and dynamic techniques, such as file structure exam ination and sandbox-based runtime analysis, this approach aims to successfully capture malicious characteristics. The proposed custom pipeline addresses the computational overhead that is associ ated with deep inspections, outlining a staged …

Agents Of Agency: Identifying Teacher Traits And Trainings Associated With Promoting Student Agency, Clara Mateo May 2026

Agents Of Agency: Identifying Teacher Traits And Trainings Associated With Promoting Student Agency, Clara Mateo

Dissertations

This study shifts the focus of mathematics teacher quality from the traditional metric of test scores to “student agency,” defined as a learner's capacity to access power, make decisions, and take ownership of their learning process. While the literature on student agency provides ample qualitative insights, it is largely composed of small-scale studies. This research addresses this gap by conducting a large-scale, nationwide quantitative analysis to identify teacher factors associated with the promotion of student agency. The central research question is: What teacher demographics, dispositions, and professional development experiences are associated with increased student agency?

This study used a cross-sectional …

A "Felon" In The White House: A Study Of The 2024 Election And The Racialized Violence Of The Word "Felon" In American Politics, Val Arnold May 2026

A "Felon" In The White House: A Study Of The 2024 Election And The Racialized Violence Of The Word "Felon" In American Politics, Val Arnold

FCRH Honors Program Theses

One of the campaign strategies pursued by the Democratic Party in the 2024 presidential election was the use of a felon-centered discourse when discussing Donald Trump. Through the use of such discursive strategies, the Democratic Party attempted to evoke the sense of fear typically associated with discussions of crime, hoping to make voters associate the “fear” with Trump, a white man. In the media, the language used in speeches and advertising campaigns serves as a powerful tool. The current literature discusses how language operates as a “representational system,” and ultimately, words serve to give meaning. Although many articles separately discuss …

Subzero: Original Music For Piano And Live Electronics, Frank Newton May 2026

Honors College Theses

Subzero is a set of three compositions for piano and live electronics inspired by themes of nature and human perception. The term “live electronics” in a musical context refers to the use of technology to generate or trigger sounds in real time during a performance. These pieces were written specifically for use with a computer music program I designed using Max/MSP to respond to and accompany the performer. Subzero combines acoustic and synthesized sounds to examine three subjects of the natural world and how we, as humans, react to them. The compositional process of the set was informed in part …

Exploring Determinants Of Value For Money And Bundling Effects On Public–Private Partnership Projects: A Data-Driven Empirical Study, Gaurav Khadka May 2026

Exploring Determinants Of Value For Money And Bundling Effects On Public–Private Partnership Projects: A Data-Driven Empirical Study, Gaurav Khadka

Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Public–private partnerships (P3s) are widely used to deliver public infrastructure, yet current understanding of what drives variation in Value for Money (VfM) and the effectiveness of project delivery strategies such as bundling remains largely conceptual and grounded in perception-based evidence. Consequently, governments lack empirically validated guidance on which project, financial, and macroeconomic conditions meaningfully influence VfM outcomes and whether bundling improves project performance within the P3 context. This study addresses these gaps through an integrated analysis of 180 Canadian P3 infrastructure projects (1992–2020), one of the most comprehensive datasets of realized VfM internationally, incorporating project characteristics, financial arrangements, and macroeconomic …
