A Fuzzy Expert System Architecture Implementing Onboard Planning And Scheduling For Autonomous Small Satellite, Yang Jiajun, Xu Guodong, Chao Xibin, Ma Xingrui Sep 1998

A Fuzzy Expert System Architecture Implementing Onboard Planning And Scheduling For Autonomous Small Satellite, Yang Jiajun, Xu Guodong, Chao Xibin, Ma Xingrui

Small Satellite Conference

A crucial element in achieving small satellite fully autonomy is onboard automated planning and scheduling. Though lots of successful applications about it in spacecraft operations have recently been reported, and all of them are important for the development of this field, the inherent fuzziness and uncertainty of planning and scheduling was ignored made the achieving of onboard automated planning and scheduling system become idealization and no reality. In response to above-mentioned requirement, this paper presents an architecture which is developed using rules-based Fuzzy Expert System (FES). Fuzzy expert systems not only maintains the value of based rules and the merit …

Orion: A Micro Satellite Testbed For Formation Flying, Robert Twiggs, Jonathan How Sep 1998

Orion: A Micro Satellite Testbed For Formation Flying, Robert Twiggs, Jonathan How

Small Satellite Conference

A revolution in spacecraft guidance, navigation and control technology has started with GPS to autonomously provide spacecraft position, attitude and time information. This new technology is being applied to spacecraft constellations to achieve the precision formation flying required for many proposed science and commercial missions. These innovations will also result in significant reductions in weight, power consumption, and cost for future spacecraft attitude and orbit determination systems. Carrier-Phase Differential Global Positioning System (CDGPS) techniques can be used to autonomously track and then control the relative position and attitude between spacecraft. This sensing technology will enable the development of a virtual …

Coverage Analysis In Case Of Faults Of Some Satellites In Low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellations, Chan-Wang Park Sep 1998

Coverage Analysis In Case Of Faults Of Some Satellites In Low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellations, Chan-Wang Park

Small Satellite Conference

In this paper we analyze the coverage performance of satellite constellation specially in low earth orbit. First of all we analyze the various possible configuration of combinations of failures of satellites in the same orbital plane or in different orbital planes when one satellite or a number of satellites are in faults. To evaluate the performances of constellation we use one parameter, which is the maximum non-visibility time at one receiver position on earth by using simulation software. Also we have simulated by varying the latitude of the receiver position from 0 degree to 90 degrees to analyze the coverage …

The Ellipso™ Satellite - Application Of Small Satellite Principles To The Space Segment Of A Global Mobile Personal Communications System, John Draim Sep 1998

The Ellipso™ Satellite - Application Of Small Satellite Principles To The Space Segment Of A Global Mobile Personal Communications System, John Draim

Small Satellite Conference

The designers of ELLIPSO have intentionally driven the design of their satellites towards simplicity, and thus lower cost. The service link antennas are state of the art fixed planar arrays mounted on a nadir pointing plane that is always oriented towards the center of the earth. The communications payload uses simple, bent-pipe transponders to avoid the necessity of extensive onboard digital processing. The level of major component redundancy in each satellite is much less than in their more expensive GEO comsat cousins. The effect of a satellite failure is not so severe for ELLIPSO as for a typical GEO satellite …

Space Based Radar To Observe Space Debris, A.A. Tolkachev, M.M. Zolotarev, V.I. Loukiaschenko, G.G. Raikunov, A.I. Yaremenko Sep 1998

Space Based Radar To Observe Space Debris, A.A. Tolkachev, M.M. Zolotarev, V.I. Loukiaschenko, G.G. Raikunov, A.I. Yaremenko

Small Satellite Conference

Space debris of 1÷3mm size is known to be hazardous for astronauts and space vehicles. At the same time the possibility to notice such objects by ground based optical and radar devices in the nearest future is rather problematic. Here we propose an idea of space radar for observation of cicumterrestrial space debris. The radar works in short wave part of millimetre band, which is mostly suitable for this purpose. The radar provides detecting and tracking of 1mm size objects within 40000m2 area. The radar antenna is Phased Array Antenna with 2m diameter. The radar's weight is about 100kg, the …

An Efficient Approach To Subsystem Design: Autonomous Gnc - A Case Study, Mak Tafazoli, Darius Nikanpour, Sid Saraf Sep 1998

An Efficient Approach To Subsystem Design: Autonomous Gnc - A Case Study, Mak Tafazoli, Darius Nikanpour, Sid Saraf

Small Satellite Conference

Budgets are shrinking, therefore the space community is focusing on small satellites to satisfy a wide range of applications. New and emerging technologies are helping to make small satellite development less costly. However, matching improvements in the design and development process are also required. In this regard, simulation is playing an increasingly important role. The paper describes the design and development of a typical small satellite's autonomous Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) subsystem supported by a graphical simulation tool. The GNC is one of the critical technology elements and could be a significant cost driver on future small satellite programs …

System Models To Reduce Mission Design Time And Manage Risk: The Mars Microprobe Mission Case Study, Aj. Barbieri, P. Estabrook

Small Satellite Conference

New approaches to modelling spacecraft system are being tested at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in order to better understand and quantify the interactions among spacecraft subsystems and mission variables and thereby understand and manage mission risk. Ultimately the goal is to enable the design of lower cost missions and to reduce the time between system concept and launch. This paper will present the New Millennium Deep Space 2 system model developed using NuThena's Foresight program. The system tool models the physical and media access control layers of the telecom relay link, the capacity and temperature of the batteries, and the …

An Introduction To The Department Of Energy's Multispectral Thermal Imager (Mti) Project Emphasizing The Imaging And Calibration Subsystems, Rex Kay, Brian Brock, Tammy Henson, Jeffrey Rienstra, Max Decker, Glenn Rackley, Paul Weber, Steven Bender, Donald Byrd Sep 1998

An Introduction To The Department Of Energy's Multispectral Thermal Imager (Mti) Project Emphasizing The Imaging And Calibration Subsystems, Rex Kay, Brian Brock, Tammy Henson, Jeffrey Rienstra, Max Decker, Glenn Rackley, Paul Weber, Steven Bender, Donald Byrd

Small Satellite Conference

MTI is a comprehensive research and development project that includes up-front modeling and analysis, system design, fabrication, assembly and testing, on-orbit operations, and experimentation and data analysis. The satellite is designed to collect radiometrically calibrated, medium resolution imagery in 15 spectral bands ranging from 0.45 to 10.70 μm. The combination of spectral bands, very accurate radiometry and good spatial resolution make MTI unique among current and planned space-based imaging systems. The imaging system includes a three-mirror anastigmatic off-axis telescope, a single cryogenically cooled focal plane assembly, a mechanical cooler, and an onboard calibration system. The single focal plane sensor design …

A Spaceborne Wind Sounder Lidar (Sbl), Amnon Ginati, Martin Kassebom, Avi Blasberger, M. Oron Sep 1998

A Spaceborne Wind Sounder Lidar (Sbl), Amnon Ginati, Martin Kassebom, Avi Blasberger, M. Oron

Small Satellite Conference

This paper presents a commercial oriented SpaceBorne wind sounder LIDAR (SBL) system, which is designed for advanced remote sensing purposes. The main objectives of SBL are the measurement of wind velocities, by measuring its Doppler shifted reflection from the various atmospheric layers. This represents a unique way to map the three dimensional wind field around the globe.

Earth Orbiter-1, Incorporating New Technology Advanced Sensors And Instruments, Mark Perry, Michael Mccullough, Wayne Roher, Matthew Jurotich

Small Satellite Conference

Earth Orbiter-1 (EO-1) is a flight segment of the New Millennium Program, which evaluates new technologies for future space missions. Although EO-1' s most important new technologies are part of the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) instrument - which contains several technologies that will be evaluated for use in the follow-on to Landsat 7 - many un-proven technologies are incorporated into the spacecraft. Systems engineers are challenged to incorporate as many new and innovative technologies as possible, but still minimize the risk to the primary goal of the mission: to evaluate the ALI performance. Following a short overview of the EO-1 …
