The Total Synthesis Of A Conformationally Constrained Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetycholine, Justin Mergott '98 Jan 1998

The Total Synthesis Of A Conformationally Constrained Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetycholine, Justin Mergott '98

Honors Projects

We propose the total synthesis of a conformationally constrained organophosphorus analog of acetylcholine (5, Scheme 5). This compound will contain two crural centers, one being the phosphorus atom and the other being the pyrrolidine ring carbon beta to the phosphorus atom. The chiral beta carbon is conformationally constrained because it is part of the pyrrolidine ring. Studies with such a compound should allow us to make substantial progress towards the clarification of the stereospecificity of AChE inhibition by OP compounds and eventually help us understand more about the structure of the AChE active site. The synthesis begins with Cbz-L-proline methyl …

The Role Of The Comstock-Kellogg Glands In Egg Tanning In Romalea Guttata, Elizabeth A. Elasser '98 Jan 1998

The Role Of The Comstock-Kellogg Glands In Egg Tanning In Romalea Guttata, Elizabeth A. Elasser '98

Honors Projects

FreshIy laid eggs of the Eastern Lubber grasshopper, Romalea guttata, are yellow and soft-shelled, but within several hours the eggs become hardened and dark brown. In a similar process, calyx and oviduct secretions, which from the egg pod, become frothy, darkened, hardened, and water insoluble during oviposition. It has been suggested that secretions from the paired Comstock-Kellogg glands accelerate tanning of both the eggs and egg pod foam. I investigated the effects of Comstock-Kellogg gland secretions on the rate of egg and egg pod tanning during egg pod production in the female Eastern Lubber grasshopper, R. guttata. Eggs streaked with …

Logiccity: On-Line Digital Logic Simulator, Jihad Z. Almahayni

Open Access Master's Theses

A primary challenge for science educators is to develop ways to help students understand new ideas that cannot be directly observed. The application of computer simulations is one method instructors may use to address the problem of teaching for conceptual understanding. The use of computer simulations for science teaching is increasing steadily because simulations provide students with the opportunity to witness or "perform" experiments that might otherwise be too expensive, too time consuming, or too dangerous for them to do in the lab. Simulation, in general, is a very effective way for both a student and a professional to visualize …

The Effects Of Systematically Fading Reinforcement While Maintaining Skills, Jodi Suzanne Bronson Jan 1998

The Effects Of Systematically Fading Reinforcement While Maintaining Skills, Jodi Suzanne Bronson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A review of the literature describing treatment programs for young children with autism revealed two distinctly different strategies. One, the Lovaas approach (Lovaas, 1987), focused on an intense, one-on-one discrete trial training format implemented for approximately 40 hours per week. A prescribed curriculum targeted at social and communication skills is incorporated. The second program, TEACCH, emphasized an individualized curriculum selected after a careful assessment process to determine a person's strengths and limitations. Goals and objectives were subsequently implemented in highly structured special education classrooms where the focus was on antecedent control and the use of visually mediated strategies. Interviews with …

Corporate Executive Perspective Of Worksite Health Promotion Programs, Barbara E. Gay Jan 1998

Corporate Executive Perspective Of Worksite Health Promotion Programs, Barbara E. Gay

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Health promotion programs at the workplace are increasing in popularity for both large and small businesses across the United States. The workplace has been recognized as a favorable setting for health promotion programs because it provides a captive audience for promoting health. The workplace also provides the employee with an opportunity for support in making healthy lifestyle changes. Numerous studies have documented that worksite health promotion programs will improve employee health and morale, increase productivity, and decrease absenteeism. Comparing the cost to the benefits is often the basis for making business decisions, including the decision to implement a health promotion …

The International Enforcement Of Software Copyrights And Patents, Siehnai F. Williamson Jan 1998

The International Enforcement Of Software Copyrights And Patents, Siehnai F. Williamson

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

Upon graduating with a computer science degree, Shannon Smith and her classmates started their own educational computer software firm called ABC Software (ABC). ABC observed that the computer software industry had grown exponentially since the 1980s due in part to industry-wide standards (like the Windows® platform) and the declining costs in computer hardware that have increased demand for computer products. Because ABC believes the software industry is knowledge-based, ABC need incur little research and developmental costs. ABC's ability to protect its software will be the determining factor in deciding where to distribute its products. Since the very nature of computer …

U.S. Subject Matter Jurisdiction For Copyright Infringements On The Internet, Christian M. Reider Jan 1998

U.S. Subject Matter Jurisdiction For Copyright Infringements On The Internet, Christian M. Reider

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

Copyright infringement is currently the most important substantive legal issue in online communication. Many copyright owners, a handful of authors, and an increasing number of courts realize that the Internet, more than any other medium, will challenge the enforcement of copyright infringement in the international context. The threshold issue in copyright enforcement is the question of subject matter jurisdiction over the Internet, a digital world without significant national boundaries.

Determining subject matter jurisdiction has great economic and legal impact on the parties. The exposure of any individual Internet user or any local company to foreign as well as multiple jurisdictions …

Freedom Of Speech: How Does The New York Constitution Compare To The United States Constitution, Eileen R. Kaufman, Leon Friedman Jan 1998

Freedom Of Speech: How Does The New York Constitution Compare To The United States Constitution, Eileen R. Kaufman, Leon Friedman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

One of the most interesting, and certainly most litigated, defamation questions in New York State is when constitutional protection should be afforded speech that arguably would be regarded as opinion. In resolving that question, the New York Court of Appeals has decided that the New York State Constitution affords greater protection for speech than does the federal constitution. While the New York standard seems to be far more generous in protecting speech than the federal standard, it may be that in the vast majority of cases, the outcomes would be the same under either state or federal analysis. The two …

Parental Conflict Prevention Programs And The Unified Family Court: A Public Health Perspective, Andrew Schepard Jan 1998

Parental Conflict Prevention Programs And The Unified Family Court: A Public Health Perspective, Andrew Schepard

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The thesis of this article is that every unified family court should develop a prevention plan to help parents reduce conflict arising out of divorce and separation. A coherent prevention strategy should become a fundamental criteria for distinguishing high-quality family courts from those that do not serve their publics as well. Models of useful pro-grams already exist and can be incorporated into a court's prevention plan. Judges, legislators, lawyers, mental health professionals, and child advocates should insist that they are.

Section Two of this article describes the problems facing courts, parents, and children resulting from divorce and separation in terms …

The Policy And Politics Of Charter Making: The Story Of New York City's 1989 Charter, Frederick A.O. Schwarz Jr., Eric Lane Jan 1998

The Policy And Politics Of Charter Making: The Story Of New York City's 1989 Charter, Frederick A.O. Schwarz Jr., Eric Lane

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

On November 7, 1989, the voters of the City of New York approved, by a vote of fifty-five percent to forty-five percent, the broadest and most radical changes to their Charter since 1901. These changes abolished the City's historic Board of Estimate, while preserving a borough voice in government, expanding and increasing the powers of the City Council, retooling almost all of the City's significant decision-making processes, and adding a myriad of other changes. These changes were the product of a revision process that started in mid-1987 with the first hearings of an initial Charter revision commission, and moved to …

Neither Dead Nor Forgotten: The Past, Present, And Future Of The Communications Decency Act In Light Of Reno V. Aclu, Sue Ann Mota Jan 1998

Neither Dead Nor Forgotten: The Past, Present, And Future Of The Communications Decency Act In Light Of Reno V. Aclu, Sue Ann Mota

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The Communications Decency Act (CDA) was enacted by Congress in February of 1996 as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The goal of the CDA was to limit children's exposure to sexually explicit online materials. President Clinton signed the bill into law on February 8, 1996, and the CDA was immediately challenged.  A three-judge federal district court panel in ACLU v. Reno held that certain provisions of the CDA violate the U.S. Constitution. On June 26, 1997, the Supreme Court handed down its decision, affirming that certain provisions of the CDA violate the First Amendment. The provisions held to …

By keeping in step with technological developments, efficiencies may be realized in the practice of law that were heretofore inconceivable. This article includes (1) a review of Outlook …

Legal Protection Of Collections Of Facts, Charles Brill Jan 1998

Legal Protection Of Collections Of Facts, Charles Brill

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

Database compilers traditionally have used copyright and trade secret laws to protect their databases from appropriation by competitors. A 1991 Supreme Court decision, however, casts some doubt on the copyright protection extended to databases in the United States. In response to the Supreme database industry has launched a worldwide effort to encourage legislation to provide strong protection of databases, especially electronic databases. These efforts have borne fruit in Europe where Great Britain has passed laws protecting databases from unfair extraction and the European Union has mandated a sui generisprotection which, in conjunction with existing copyright laws, will provide very strong protection …

Copyrighting Cyberspace: Unweaving A Tangled Web, Robert N. Diotalevi

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The Internet, which began as a research project, is now the largest computer system in the world. Commonly known as the net or cyberspace, this superhighway offers a variety of useful information through its ocean of URL's, browsers and hyperlinks. Although to some people this new generation of technology may seem intimidating or even far-fetched, the reality is that its opportunities are vital to nearly every facet of modem life. With advancing technology comes new legal battles. The age of information has exposed and tested many limitations of copyright law. This work attempts to explain present copyright law as it …

Telephone Companies Go To Battle Over The Internet, Peter C. Salaverry Jan 1998

Telephone Companies Go To Battle Over The Internet, Peter C. Salaverry

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

Entering the twenty-first century, Americans, like most people around the world, regard the Internet as a free and unregulated means of communication. Naive to its origins, many individuals surf the Internet unaware of the debates concerning its regulation.

In March 1996, America's Carriers Telecommunication Association (ACTA), a trade association of roughly 130 long-distance carriers, petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to confirm "its authority over interstate and international telecommunications services using the Internet." More specifically, the ACTA petition requested that the FCC enjoin software distributors of long-distance telephone software and other providers of non-tariffed and uncertified entities, compelling them to …

Current Advertising Regulations And The Internet, Lori A. Lustberg Jan 1998

Current Advertising Regulations And The Internet, Lori A. Lustberg

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

Since its inception, the Internet has brought society an array of opportunities. With those opportunities challenges arise. The Internet advertising arena is no different. The opportunities for companies to use the Internet to reach their target audiences are extraordinary. Because no regulations apply specifically to the Internet and since no agency has the specific task of regulating it, however, questions are plentiful regarding how and to what extent advertising is acceptable over the Internet. Both consumers and advertisers can clearly benefit from the use of advertising on the Internet. Consumers can readily and easily access information and products in which …

Extension Of Copyright To Fonts-Can The Alphabet Be Far Behind?, Jonathan L. Mezrich Jan 1998

Extension Of Copyright To Fonts-Can The Alphabet Be Far Behind?, Jonathan L. Mezrich

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

In February 1998, a federal district court issued a decision that may have a profound impact on the software industry. The court held, in Adobe Systems, Inc. v. Southern Software, Inc., that copyright law protects "software programs" that create fonts that are distinct typefaces. This ruling is ill-conceived. While people should be rewarded and protected for their creativity, copyright law should not be extended to cover the "artwork" inherent in font "glyphs," which, in their most basic form, comprise the alphabet itself.

The software industry has experienced dramatic growth in the past decade. While a small number of dominant …

A Case Study Analysis Of The Relationship Between Atherosclerosis And Alzheimer's Disease, Katie Larsen '98 Jan 1998

A Case Study Analysis Of The Relationship Between Atherosclerosis And Alzheimer's Disease, Katie Larsen '98

Honors Projects

Several animal studies have brought the cholinergic hypothesis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) into question. In addition, recent clinical studies have shown that the number of neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles does not yield a conclusive diagnosis of AD. A reassessment of risk factors involved in AD development has led to findings that atherosclerosis is associated with dementia. The present study is a clinical analysis, through the use of case studies, of the relationship between atherosclerosis severity, based on autopsy results, and AD severity, based on scores from cognitive tests and functional assessments, as well as autopsy results. The age of …

Supporting The Management Of Electronic Engineering Design Teams Through A Dynamic Contingency Approach, Richard David Parsons Jan 1998

Supporting The Management Of Electronic Engineering Design Teams Through A Dynamic Contingency Approach, Richard David Parsons

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The contribution to knowledge presented in this thesis is the dynamic contingency approach, supported through software, which supports the management of the early, conceptual stages of electronic engineering team design. 1he term contingency pertains to the design environment being in a contingent state, that is "dependent on uncertain issues" (Hayward & Sparkes, 1991). These issues are typically dynamic, that is ''pertaining to forces not in equilibrium, forces that produce motion" (Hayward & Sparkes, 1991). The concept for the dynamic contingency approach was developed through a soft systems analysis. This analysis drew upon an ethnographic study conducted in parallel with the …

The Influence Of Belief Bias On Syllogistic Reasoning, Nicola-Jane Lambell Jan 1998

The Influence Of Belief Bias On Syllogistic Reasoning, Nicola-Jane Lambell

School of Psychology Theses

The syllogistic evaluation task paradigm requires participants to assess whether a conclusion is logically determined by its premises. The inability to ignore beliefs when attempting to comply with this requirement is the phenomenon known as ‘belief bias’. This research programme primarily examines this phenomenon and is motivated by conflicting accounts of how it arises. This research also examines the relative believability of the logical quantifiers which are used to construct the syllogistic task.

An Investigation Into The Development Of Engineering Students' Conceptual Understanding Of Mathematics, Wendy Mary Maull Jan 1998

An Investigation Into The Development Of Engineering Students' Conceptual Understanding Of Mathematics, Wendy Mary Maull

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Following widespread concern over an apparent decline in the mathematical skills of engineering students, this study employed survey and observation methods to investigate the ways in which engineering students understand mathematical concepts, and to compare these with the concepts held-by students of mathematics. It was found that the engineering students employ a different vocabulary from mathematics students in discussing mathematics, and that their understanding of mathematical concepts develops differently from mathematics students both in response to teaching (which appears to be a transitory effect) and as their experience gives meaning to the ideas in life outside study. These findings are …
