Survey Of Student Satisfaction With Financial Aid Services, Elise Wrye Boyett Jan 1998

Survey Of Student Satisfaction With Financial Aid Services, Elise Wrye Boyett

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Financial aid offices exist in virtually every postsecondary institution in the United States. They disburse money to students in a variety of methods, including scholarships and grants with no repayment requirements, and various loans with payback responsibilities varying in terms of time, rate of interest, and who pays. Institutions use financial aid funds for multiple purposes — to attract highly qualified students, to attract students to specific programs, and to assist students who would not otherwise be able to attend. Thus, financial aid and student enrollment are closely related.

Over the last 40 years, the primary purpose of financial aid …

Evaluation Of Information Modeling Methods: A Review, Keng Siau, Matti Rossi Jan 1998

Evaluation Of Information Modeling Methods: A Review, Keng Siau, Matti Rossi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hundreds of modeling methods are in existence today. Yet practitioners and researchers are zealously "producing" new modeling methods. The "blooming" of modeling methods is not the problem; the lack of standardize techniques for evaluating them is. To further complicate the matter, most of the modeling methods are introduced based on common sense and intuition. Theoretical foundations and empirical evidence are severely lacking. With the current state of affairs, evaluation of modeling methods has become necessary. Comparing modeling methods provides us with the necessary knowledge and understanding on the strengths and weaknesses of each method. This knowledge can also guide us …

Seriation, Superposition, And Interdigitation: A History Of Americanist Graphic Depictions Of Culture Change, R. L. Lyman, S. Wolverton, Michael J. O'Brien Jan 1998

Seriation, Superposition, And Interdigitation: A History Of Americanist Graphic Depictions Of Culture Change, R. L. Lyman, S. Wolverton, Michael J. O'Brien

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

Histories of Americanist archaeology regularly confuse frequency seriation with a technique for measuring the passage of time based on superposition - percentage stratigraphy - and fail to mention interdigitation as an important component of some percentage-stratigraphic studies. Frequency seriation involves the arrangement of collections so that each artifact type displays a unimodal frequency distribution, but the direction of time's flow must be determined from independent evidence. Percentage stratigraphy plots the fluctuating frequencies of types, but the order of collections is based on their superposition, which in turn illustrates the direction of time's flow. Interdigitation involves the integration of sets of …

Coercive Sexual Strategies, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt, Les B. Whitbeck Jan 1998

Coercive Sexual Strategies, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt, Les B. Whitbeck

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study examines the use of coercive sexual strategies by men and the outcomes of these behaviors for women. Using a sample of 541 college undergraduates, data were gathered from men on their use of three types of coercive sexual strategies and from women on their experiences with these same forms of behaviors. For women, there is a positive association between being sexually active, having sexually permissive attitudes, drinking alcohol and being a victim of certain types of sexual coercive strategies. For men, sexually permissive attitudes and attitudes toward rape are found to be significant predictors of their use of …

A Reassessment Of The Hybrid Approach To The Construction Of Regional Input-Output Tables, Steven Brand Jan 1998

A Reassessment Of The Hybrid Approach To The Construction Of Regional Input-Output Tables, Steven Brand

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis lays the foundation for the creation of an economic database for the counties of Devon and Cornwall in the form of a regional input-output table. The thesis reconsiders the popular hybrid approach to the construction of such tables. In particular, the nonsurvey-to-survey ordering of procedure is questioned. The thesis attempts to restore a more logical preference-order which begins with first-best (survey) estimation methods and extends to second-best (survey-based-nonsurvey) methods. The third-best methods of estimation (pure nonsurvey i.e. location quotient) are excluded from the process altogether. The thesis is largely concerned with the development of the second-best method. The …

Characterization Of An All-Optical Device Based On Organic Materials, Hans-Martin Keller, Mark Andreas Bader, Gerd Marowsky Jan 1998

Characterization Of An All-Optical Device Based On Organic Materials, Hans-Martin Keller, Mark Andreas Bader, Gerd Marowsky

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

We present numerical and first experimental results for an all-optical switching device. The device consists of a periodically modulated nonlinear waveguide, where so-called gap solitons stabilize the switching process. The fabrication of Bragg gratings in different polymeric films, e.g. poly(phenylene vinylene), polydiacetylene or polystyrene by excimer laser photoablation was tested. In preparation of further experiments numerical calculations were performed to characterize the device under realistic conditions, including position dependent index modulations and absorption losses. In further time-dependent simulations the transition from the reflecting to the transparent state was investigated in detail. As a main result, the threshold intensity turns out …

Error-Correcting Codes Associated With Generalized Hadamard Matrices Over Groups, Iem H. Heng Jan 1998

Error-Correcting Codes Associated With Generalized Hadamard Matrices Over Groups, Iem H. Heng

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Classical Hadamard matrices are orthogonal matrices whose elements are ±1. It is well-known that error correcting codes having large minimum distance between codewords can be associated with these Hadamard matrices. Indeed, the success of early Mars deep-space probes was strongly dependent upon this communication technology.

The concept of Hadamard matrices with elements drawn from an Abelian group is a natural generalization of the concept. For the case in which the dimension of the matrix is q and the group consists of the p-th roots of unity, these generalized Hadamard matrices are called “Butson Hadamard Matrices BH(p, q)”, …

Municipal Involvement In International Relations, John Jack William Hilgers Jan 1998

Municipal Involvement In International Relations, John Jack William Hilgers

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

The purpose of this study is to examine municipal involvement in international relations in the United States. This municipal phenomenon is occurring concurrently with both a shift away from the traditional nation-centric structure of international relations under the influence of globalism as well as a sharp decline in intergovernmental aid. The research questions were: (1) What are the indicators that define municipal involvement in international relations? and (2) What is the extent of that involvement?

Extensive qualitative and research was conducted in the form of an exploratory literature survey which was set forth in narrative analysis to overcome the paucity …

Improvisation In Latin Dance Music: History And Style, Peter L. Manuel Jan 1998

Improvisation In Latin Dance Music: History And Style, Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

Latin dance music constitutes one of the most dynamic and sophisticated urban popular music traditions in the Americas. Improvisation plays an important role in this set of genres, and its styles are sufficiently distinctive, complex, and internally significant as to merit book-length treatment along the lines of Paul Berliner's volume Thinking in Jazz (1994). To date, however, the subject of Latin improvisation has received only marginal and cursory analytical treatment, primarily in recent pedagogical guidebooks and videos. While a single chapter such as this can hardly do justice to the subject, an attempt will be made here to sketch some …

Chutney And Indo-Trinidadian Cultural Identity, Peter L. Manuel Jan 1998

Chutney And Indo-Trinidadian Cultural Identity, Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

Since the early 1980s Indian diasporic communities have attained sufficient size, affluence, self-awareness and generational distance from South Asia to have created a set of popular music styles that are autonomous and distinctive rather than strictly derivative of Indian models. While the bhangra music of British Punjabis has attracted some scholarly and journalistic attention, chutney, a syncretic IndoCaribbean popular music and dance idiom, is little known outside its own milieu. This article constitutes a preliminary socio-musical study of chutney.

Making Meaning Transformative Art Education For Middle School, Julia Marshall Jan 1998

Making Meaning Transformative Art Education For Middle School, Julia Marshall

Doctoral Dissertations

The problems this study addresses are the purpose and the methodology of contemporary art education in middle school. The research explores art-making as a potent teaching/learning process when used in critical pedagogy and participatory research. The study seeks to inquire into the world of the young adolescent, identifying the needs, issues and problems specific to middle school age students. It does this through using personal and communal life as the subject of art-making and reflection. Specifically, the study looks at what students discover about themselves and each other and the strategies that facilitate that discovery. The study examines how art …

A Discovery-Oriented Process Study Of Enactment In Family Therapy: Development Of The Family Therapy Enactment Rating Scale, Elizabeth Ong-Mythuan Fong Jan 1998

A Discovery-Oriented Process Study Of Enactment In Family Therapy: Development Of The Family Therapy Enactment Rating Scale, Elizabeth Ong-Mythuan Fong

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

With the effectiveness of psychotherapy now well-supported in both the individual and family literatures (Garfield & Bergin, 1994), we are entering an era where questions of how and why therapy works are of interest. More specifically, there has been support and encouragement by some researchers (Rice & Greenberg, 1984; Mahrer, 1988) for the use of discovery-oriented methodologies to explore clinical phenomena that have yet to be empirically validated. The following is a discovery-oriented study of enactment, a structural family therapy intervention. The theoretical goals of enactments, their relevance to clinical practice, as well as how they are actually implemented in …

A Hierarchical Filtering-Based Monitoring Architecture For Large-Scale Distributed Systems, Ehab Salem Al-Shaer Jan 1998

A Hierarchical Filtering-Based Monitoring Architecture For Large-Scale Distributed Systems, Ehab Salem Al-Shaer

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

On-line monitoring is essential for observing and improving the reliability and performance of large-scale distributed (LSD) systems. In an LSD environment, large numbers of events are generated by system components during their execution and interaction with external objects (e.g. users or processes). These events must be monitored to accurately determine the run-time behavior of an LSD system and to obtain status information that is required for debugging and steering applications. However, the manner in which events are generated in an LSD system is complex and represents a number of challenges for an on-line monitoring system. Correlated events axe generated concurrently …

A Framework For Controlling Quality Of Sessions In Multimedia Systems, Alaa S. Youssef Jan 1998

A Framework For Controlling Quality Of Sessions In Multimedia Systems, Alaa S. Youssef

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Collaborative multimedia systems demand overall session quality control beyond the level of quality of service (QoS) pertaining to individual connections in isolation of others. At every instant in time, the quality of the session depends on the actual QoS offered by the system to each of the application streams, as well as on the relative priorities of these streams according to the application semantics. We introduce a framework for achieving QoSess control and address the architectural issues involved in designing a QoSess control laver that realizes the proposed framework. In addition, we detail our contributions for two main components of …

The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity, Self-Esteem, Emotional Well-Being And Depression Among Lakota/Dakota Sioux Adolescents, Susan M. Pittenger Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity, Self-Esteem, Emotional Well-Being And Depression Among Lakota/Dakota Sioux Adolescents, Susan M. Pittenger

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Despite conceptual support linking ethnic identity and psychological adjustment among Native Americans, empirical research examining this relationship remains limited. In light of recent developments in the area of ethnic identity research, including alternative conceptual models, improved methodologies, and more sophisticated measures, this study examined the relationship between ethnic identity, self-esteem, emotional well-being, and depression among Native American reservation youth.

The relationship between the predictor variables of American Indian ethnic identity, White-American identity and bicultural identity, and the criterion measures of self-esteem, emotional well-being, and depression were examined for 137 Lakota/Dakota Sioux reservation youth. Participants completed surveys including the Multigroup Ethnic …

Intellectual Property As Price Discrimination: Implications For Contract, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 1998

Intellectual Property As Price Discrimination: Implications For Contract, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

As people become enamored with the possible benefits of allowing price discrimination in contracts for intellectual goods, they should realize that traditional intellectual property law works by fostering price discrimination among customers. This simple fact has implications for federal pre-emption, and is a reminder of the complexity of the economic issues involved. Increasing a seller's ability to price discriminate will often involve increasing his monopoly power, with dubious welfare effects.

Locating A Mate In 3d: The Case Of Temora Longicornis, Michael H. Doall, Sean Colin, J. Rudi Strickler, Jeannette Yen

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Using laser optics to illuminate high–resolution video–recordings, we revealed behavioural mechanisms through which males of the calanoid copepod species Temora longicornis locate females. Males of T. longicornis swam at significantly faster speeds than females along more sinuous routes, possibly reflecting adaptations to increase encounter with females. Upon approaching within 2 mm (i.e. two bodylengths) of a female's swimming path, males accelerated to significantly higher pursuit speeds. Pursuit trajectories closely traced the trajectories of females, suggesting that males were following detectable trails created by swimming females. Males of T. longicornis detected female trails up to at least 10 s old, and …

Mapping Mediation: The Risks Of Riskin's Grid, Kimberlee K. Kovach, Lela P. Love Jan 1998

Mapping Mediation: The Risks Of Riskin's Grid, Kimberlee K. Kovach, Lela P. Love

Articles

We use maps for orientation and guidance. A topographical map and compass guide us through unmarked terrain. To pass a bar exam, law students follow a course carefully mapped out by BAR/ BRI. To understand political configurations, we study maps of the world, indicating countries and states and their boundaries. Maps are important. They create paradigms or "boxes" within which to operate safely and efficiently. The universe a map depicts-what is put in and what is left out-must have an internal cohesion, logic, and accuracy. If not, maps misguide their users.

An Efficient Library For Parallel Ray Tracing And Animation, John Edward Stone Jan 1998

An Efficient Library For Parallel Ray Tracing And Animation, John Edward Stone

Masters Theses

"A parallel ray tracing library is presented for rendering high detail images of three dimensional geometry and computational fields. The library has been developed for use on distributed memory and shared memory parallel computers and can also run on sequential computers. Parallelism is achieved through the use of message passing and threads. It is shown that the library achieves almost linear scalability when run on large distributed memory parallel computers as well as large shared memory parallel computers.

Several applications of parallel rendering are explored including rendering of CAD models, animation, magnetic resonance imaging, and visualization of volumetric flow fields. …

Characterization Of Petroleum Fog Oil And Vegetable Oil Smokes, Andrew Oliver Larouche

Masters Theses

"Deception and concealment to gain tactical advantage in the battlefield has been an integral part of warfare. Smoke has been a common tool used for signaling, concealment of troop movement and weapon deployment. U.S. Armed Forces have made use of smokes in an organized manner since the 1st world war. Since then various materials such as white phosphorus, zinc chloride, diesel fuel and petroleum oil aerosols have been used to obscure military targets. For the past thirty years fog oil (FO) a medium distillate has been extensively used by the U.S. Armed Forces for generation of obscurant smokes (OS). During …
