Inferencing And Story Retelling Abilities In A First Grade Population, Aami Nicole Osterberg Jan 1998

Inferencing And Story Retelling Abilities In A First Grade Population, Aami Nicole Osterberg

Honors Capstones

Narrative abilities have been shown to be highly correlated with academic success in children. Inferencing, one form of narration, has not been researched in children under the age of six. Information about inferencing abilities in children is important because is could help with the early identification of a language deficiency. This study was designed to help determine at what age children begin to infer information. Fifteen first grade children were presented with line drawings and prompted to infer what happened between the pictures. The children were also asked to retell a story after it was presented to them to assess …

Decisions At The End Of Life, Catherine A. Marco Jan 1998

Decisions At The End Of Life, Catherine A. Marco

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

As members of the Church, we believe that our Heavenly Father, in His divine judgment, chooses the appropriate time of death, the essential step and passageway to the next and more perfect life. Although medical technology has created many possibilities for increasing the quality and duration of life in many cases, its use must be appropriately and cautiously implemented. The role of medicine and technology should be to assist in providing cure and comfort to patients in need, rather than the artificial postponement of the natural process of dying.

Government And Fertility In Transitional And Post-Transitional Societies, Geoffrey Mcnicoll Jan 1998

Government And Fertility In Transitional And Post-Transitional Societies, Geoffrey Mcnicoll

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Five categories of possible government influence on a nation’s fertility are explored: (1) through publicly funded programs that explicitly seek to affect family-size outcomes (2) through the legal order and system of public administration (3) through measures that affect economic opportunity, social mobility, and gender relations; (4) through public-sector expenditures and transfer payments keyed to age or family status; and (5) through the state’s supplanting of local beliefs and traditions with the symbols of national identity and through the parallel expansion of cultural frames of reference. Aside from the first of these, intentions to influence fertility are either incidental or …

Using Cope To Improve Quality Of Care: The Experience Of The Family Planning Association Of Kenya, Janet Bradley, Judith Bruce, Soledad Diaz, Carlos Huezo, Kalimi Mworia Jan 1998

Using Cope To Improve Quality Of Care: The Experience Of The Family Planning Association Of Kenya, Janet Bradley, Judith Bruce, Soledad Diaz, Carlos Huezo, Kalimi Mworia

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This is the first of several editions of Quality/Calidad/Qualité that describe methodologies designed to assist family planning program managers and staff to self-assess the quality of services they are providing. These tools give program sponsors an opportunity to identify shortfalls in their service environment and propose solutions. This issue focuses on AVSC International's COPE (client-oriented, provider-efficient) methodology, a self-assessment tool that has now been used in 35 countries around the world. The report examines the experience of the National Family Planning Association of Kenya, provides some lessons learned, and demonstrates that these self-assessment exercises are, in fact, resulting in system-wide …

When Species Collide: An Analysis Of The Use Of Anencephalic Infants And Non-Human Animals As Organ Donors, Mary Ann Palese Chandler

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This article examines the organ transplant problem with a focus on these two potential sources. Part II exposes the problem which, simply stated, is that a serious shortage of transplantable organs makes identification of new sources of donor organs a necessity. Part III deals with the anencephalic infant as a source of organs. It discusses the nature of this fatal birth defect, the manner in which these infants have been dealt with in the past, and how they are treated today. The article goes on to discuss why these infants may be a valuable potential source of organs for pediatric …

Medical Records On-Line: What Happened To Privacy? A Legal Analysis, Marcia Weiss Jan 1998

Medical Records On-Line: What Happened To Privacy? A Legal Analysis, Marcia Weiss

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The computerization of health information and medical records, including sensitive personal information that potentially reveals intimate details of one's life, habits, or genetic predisposition, is a mixed blessing. While offering a means of streamlining and improving the health care delivery system through speed and immense storage capacity, computerized medical information also presents new challenges as it impacts our right of privacy and expectation of confidentiality, creating serious ethical and legal issues. Non-uniform, patchwork statutory guidelines among the states have led to uncertainty and confusion surrounding disclosure, accessibility, and storage of medical data. This paper examines the legal ramifications surrounding issues …

Recent Challenges To The Protection Of Copyright In Literary Works: A Study Of Ghana And Canada, Josephine Asmah Jan 1998

Recent Challenges To The Protection Of Copyright In Literary Works: A Study Of Ghana And Canada, Josephine Asmah

LLM Theses

This work traces the historical development of the concept of copyright in literary works from the earliest forms of communication by human beings until the present day. By assessing the impact of implementing the recent international copyright agreements on literary works in Ghana, a developing country, and in Canada, a developed country, the work establishes that generally, the economies of developed countries are more suitable than those of developing countries to support a strengthened copyright regime. This is more so because the former have shorter transition periods in which to comply with the international copyright framework. The work also asserts …

What A Wonderful World: Multilateral Chemical Management Conventions, Liberalisation Policies And The Chemical Industry, Robin Lynne Cowling Jan 1998

What A Wonderful World: Multilateral Chemical Management Conventions, Liberalisation Policies And The Chemical Industry, Robin Lynne Cowling

LLM Theses

This thesis begins with an examination of the context of risk in which multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) are being drafted and implemented. Through a discussion of the relationship between the characteristics of multinational corporations and the phenomenon of globalisation, the impetus behind globalisation practices is revealed. This is then contextualised with an examination of the contribution of the chemical industry toward the parallel globalisations of production and environmental harm. A discussion of trade and investment liberalisation instruments is then undertaken to illustrate the current hierarchy between these instruments and MEAs. This analysis reveals the present incompatibility of these instruments and …

Peace And Public Order: International Mutual Legal Assistance "The Canadian Way", Robert J. Currie Jan 1998

Peace And Public Order: International Mutual Legal Assistance "The Canadian Way", Robert J. Currie

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

One of the fastest-growing trends in the battle against transnational crime is the conclusion of mutual legal assistance treaties between states. These conventions provide a framework for inter-jurisdictional evidence gathering, allowing for formalized cooperation in criminal investigations through a system of requests for assistance between national authorities. Canadian practice in this area has remained largely unscrutinized, but presents an interesting duality: while the courts of the land have liberally interpreted the powers of the government to fulfill requests from other countries, the making of requests by Canadian authorities has been fraught with difficulty, particularly with regard to the rights of …
