Integration Of Technology Into Science Education, Paul Zahner Jan 1998

Integration Of Technology Into Science Education, Paul Zahner

Graduate Research Papers

In this paper, the importance of integrating technology into science education is discussed. The correlation between technology and science is noted and national science standards are examined. The evolution of today's learners requires a change in science education, and technology can serve as a vehicle for meaningful reform. The starting point for any change in science education lies with the teacher, who must adopt new strategies to meet the needs of all types of learners. Various examples of these teaching plans are discussed within this paper. Other important components of the change process include school administration support, especially financial. These …

The Power Of Discussion: One Teacher's Strategies With Children In Content Classes, Larry J. Wolfe Jan 1998

The Power Of Discussion: One Teacher's Strategies With Children In Content Classes, Larry J. Wolfe

Graduate Research Papers

The use of discussion has been a practice commonly used by teachers. Over the years, how discussion is defined and used in the classroom has changed. These new definitions and rationales for discussion in classrooms creates new roles for the teacher. Once a teacher assumes these roles and is able to use discussion in the classroom effectively, students' understandings of meaning will begin to improve (Leal, 1993). It is through talk that students negotiate the meaning of text (Vygotsky, 1978) and review and master subject matter (Gall & Gall, 1976).

Issues In Distance Education, Cynthia Jo Warner Jan 1998

Issues In Distance Education, Cynthia Jo Warner

Graduate Research Papers

The world of education has undergone many changes in the past 100 years. Education was thought of as an orderly world where individual students learned discrete facts within separate courses that were organized into disciplines. One of the major changes that is currently taking place is one of physical space. In the past, students went to school. Today, school is coming to the students.

Cluster Grouping Elementary Gifted Students In The Regular Classroom: A Teacher's Perspective, Kevin Michael Teno

Graduate Research Papers

Cluster grouping is a programming option that is receiving increased attention as a method of serving gifted students in regular heterogeneously grouped classrooms. This article provides an overview of the literature on cluster grouping and also examines the advantages and disadvantages of clustering from the perspective of conclusions obtained through actual implementation in an elementary school district. The conclusions indicate that clustering, if carefully planned and implemented, provides a viable option in meeting the needs of gifted students and improves the education of all students in the regular classroom.

Signal Injection With Perceptual Criteria, T. Engi̇n Tuncer Jan 1998

Signal Injection With Perceptual Criteria, T. Engi̇n Tuncer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a novel method for increasing the coding performance and information transmission capacity is presented. This method is mainly based on perceptual modelling of input signal such as speech or audio. Presented approach may be seen as an alternative to transforms which dynamically change analysis window for better energy compaction. A perceptual model is established in order to obtain a global masking threshold in frequency below which sounds become inaudible. Certain criteria are developed for identifying the signal injection bands. A new multiband filter design method which is a generalization of windowing method is used to separate the …

State Of Art In Realistic Head Modeling For Electro-Magnetic Source Imaging Of The Human Brain, Nevzat G. Gençer, İ. Oğuz Tanzer, M. Kemal Özdemi̇r, Can E. Acar, Mert Sungur

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Electric currents produced by the neural activity in the brain create electric potentials on the scalp and magnetic field distribution outside the scalp. Measuring electric and magnetic fields provides a means to understand the spatio-temporal distribution of the neural activity. The representations of the intracellular electric current of active cell populations based on bimodal data are called electro-magnetic source image (EMSI). With the recent development of large arrays of magnetic sensors, and systems for measuring scalp voltages at more than 100 locations, it is now feasible to implement computational methods that employ numerical models which incorporate the correct geometry and …

A Comparison Of Some Low Cost Laminates For Antennas Operating In The 2.45 Ghz Ism Band, Max Ammann

Conference papers

An evaluation of some low-cost laminates suitable for microstrip patch antennas is presented. Criteria for the selection of substrates for antenna fabrication are given careful consideration. A coaxial-probe fed linearly-polarized rectangular microstrip patch operating at a frequency of 2.45 GHz was fabricated on four different low cost laminates. The substrates used were polyester, epoxy glass (FR-4), a ceramic filled PTFE composite and a woven glass-reinforced hydrocarbon and ceramic thermoset material. Material properties are discussed and the antenna performances are evaluated and compared to one fabricated on a thick glass-loaded microfiber PTFE substrate. An evaluation of some inexpensive microstrip antenna CAD …

Changing Policies Regarding Advertising In Taiwan & Their Impacts, Li-Tzu Yang Jan 1998

Changing Policies Regarding Advertising In Taiwan & Their Impacts, Li-Tzu Yang

Theses

Mass media is not only an important tool to develop social change but also a condition to ensure democracy's continued development. Before the lifting of martial law, newspaper publication was controlled by the KMT Party. This situation meant that the mass media had no freedom and could not decide for themselves what to publish. After the lifting of martial law, Taiwan experienced great changes in politics, economics, society and culture. These huge change were reflected in mass media before and after martial law and are the purpose of this research analysis. Specifically, the role advertising played before the lifting of …

Gender Bias In The American Bar Association Journal: Impact On The Legal Profession, Marilyn Berger, Kari A. Robinson Jan 1998

Gender Bias In The American Bar Association Journal: Impact On The Legal Profession, Marilyn Berger, Kari A. Robinson

Faculty Articles

The ABA Journal presents women in the legal system in a similar fashion to the presentation of women in the journals of other professions. Women are portrayed in traditional sex roles, they are pictured passively and they are often shown negatively as victims. In the volumes the authors studied, they found that the numbers of images of attorneys, judges and professors were not proportionate to the number of men and women in the legal profession. Moreover, the ABA Journal predominantly displayed women as dependent on their male counterparts. The authors also found instances where the ABA Journal portrayed women as …

The Gain Scheduled Piece-Wise Adaptive Digital Control Of A Ph Process, Eugene O'Shaughnessy, Aidan O'Dwyer

Conference papers

The compensation of a pH process is complicated by the non-linear nature of the process titration curve and the significant time delays that typically exist in such processes. This paper will propose the use of a gain scheduled piecewise adaptive PI controller to compensate the process. A pilot plant is controlled, with the control algorithm implemented on a programmable controller. SCADA software displays and trends the plant and controller signals.
