The Role Of Avram, In Indecent By Paula Vogel, Bryce Hargrove May 2026

The Role Of Avram, In Indecent By Paula Vogel, Bryce Hargrove

Student Theses

In the Fall of 2026, the Brooklyn College Department of Theatre produced the play, Indecent by Paula Vogel. This play was directed by then MFA Directing candidate, Sam Plattus. In this production, I played the role of Avram, who serves to represent a handful of characters, including Sholem Asch, the author of the 1906 play God of Vengeance, the content and surrounding events of which Indecent is based on. This show ran from December 5-9 as a part of the 2025-2026 season. In this thesis, I will delve into the life of playwright Paula Vogel and discuss her prior works, …

Soft Power, Arab Media And Sports Mega Events: Coverage Of Fifa 2022 And Lessons For Future Arab Hosting, Lynne Kennedy, Maaira Shahbaz, Ala Al Rajabi May 2026

Soft Power, Arab Media And Sports Mega Events: Coverage Of Fifa 2022 And Lessons For Future Arab Hosting, Lynne Kennedy, Maaira Shahbaz, Ala Al Rajabi

All Works

Sport mega-events (SMEs) increasingly transcend athletic competition, functioning as strategic instruments for national identity formation, statecraft, and soft power projection. This dynamic is particularly pronounced in the Gulf, where Qatar’s successful hosting reignited regional rivalries and attracted unprecedented global scrutiny. While existing scholars have extensively examined Western media portrayals of SMEs, a notable gap remains for academic engagement with Gulf media. Dismissed as state-controlled and analytically lacking, we contend that such media offer a rich site for exploring how small states use media as soft power, to construct and contest legitimacy, identity, and global influence. This analysis suggests how state-aligned …

Reclamando Corazón Y Voz: Latinas Speak Their Truth Through Plática As Resistance In California Community College Learning Disabilities Assessments, Maricela Becerra May 2026

Reclamando Corazón Y Voz: Latinas Speak Their Truth Through Plática As Resistance In California Community College Learning Disabilities Assessments, Maricela Becerra

Dissertations

Although California Community Colleges (CCCs) offer learning disability (LD) assessments to determine eligibility for academic accommodations, for Latina students navigating converging forces of race, gender, language, citizenship, and ableism, these assessments often surface unspoken histories of harm. This study advanced Chicana feminista DisCrit (CFDC), extending disability critical race theory through Chicana spirituality and cultural intuition to examine possibilities when an educadora situates assessments in a plática grounded in consideración—respectful, relational, and unhurried care.

Rooted in Chicana feminist pláticas methodology and authored from the positionality of a disabled Latina scholar–practitioner, this qualitative decolonial dissertation explored how Latina students reflected on …

Rainbow Promises, Uneven Promises: Framing Lgbtqia+ Educational Policy And Possibility In Education, Gerardo Lorenzo-Saucedo May 2026

Rainbow Promises, Uneven Promises: Framing Lgbtqia+ Educational Policy And Possibility In Education, Gerardo Lorenzo-Saucedo

Dissertations

Despite the expansion of LGBTQIA+ inclusive policies in K-12 education, disparities in students’ experiences with safety and belonging persist. This qualitative case study examines how such policies are interpreted and enacted within a high school and district in Southern California, and how these processes shape LGBTQIA+ students’ experiences.

Guided by ecological systems theory, queer theory, and multiple streams theory, this study conceptualizes policy implementation as a dynamic and socially constructed process influenced by power, ideology, and institutional context. Data were collected through interviews, document and artifact analysis, and observations, with analysis that used a multi-phased coding procedure.

Findings revealed that …

A Praxis Of Transformative Care: Centering Historically Resilient Students At A Pwi, Tanaisha Coleman May 2026

A Praxis Of Transformative Care: Centering Historically Resilient Students At A Pwi, Tanaisha Coleman

Dissertations

Campus cultural centers frequently treat student resilience as an individual struggle rather than a collective responsibility, obscuring systemic failures. At a predominantly white institution (PWI), historically resilient students, those from diverse backgrounds who have historically endured the structural load of institutional exclusion, carry the compounded weight of navigating systemic barriers while driving institutional change. This qualitative study disrupts traditional narratives of surviving and thriving to examine how undergraduate students constituting a student advisory committee (SAC) coconstructed critical resilience rooted in transformative and collective care.

Using community-based participatory research (CBPR), this study positions students as coarchitects of their institutional experiences. Over …

Governing With Digital Platforms: A Chinese Lesson For The U.S.?, Shitong Qiao May 2026

Governing With Digital Platforms: A Chinese Lesson For The U.S.?, Shitong Qiao

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

Can digital platforms make law and governance more efficient? Both China and the United States host some of the world's largest digital platforms, which lead in internet technologies, provide critical digital infrastructure, and mediate private communication and public discourse. While the American experiment has stalled, the Chinese government has made remarkable progress in leveraging digital platforms to enhance efficiency in law and governance.

The study highlights China's successes in streamlining court operations, curbing online piracy, and reshaping interactions between the Chinese government and its citizens. In practice, digital platforms have become co-governors, exerting substantial influence over public institutions rather than …

From Smallpox To Synthetic Biology: The Evolving Threat Of Biological Weapons And The Jus Ad Bellum, Sabrina I. Slagowitz May 2026

From Smallpox To Synthetic Biology: The Evolving Threat Of Biological Weapons And The Jus Ad Bellum, Sabrina I. Slagowitz

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

Biological weapons are not new, but recent developments in genetic technology have fundamentally transformed their threat potential. Advances in genome sequencing, editing technologies, and CRISPR have made pathogen modification faster, cheaper, and more accessible than ever before, reinvigorating fears of large-scale biological warfare and giving rise to a new class of synthetic bioweapons. This note examines the implications of genetically modified biological weapons for the jus ad bellum, the international law governing the use of force. Drawing an analogy to cyberweapons, it argues that bioweapons share key characteristics with cyberweapons—stealth, latency, asymmetry, non-kinetic lethality, and anonymity—that will generate similar legal …

Security Threats And Diminishing Market Access: Implications For Chinese Investors, Audrey Faulks May 2026

Security Threats And Diminishing Market Access: Implications For Chinese Investors, Audrey Faulks

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

Western countries have responded to geopolitical threats associated with China's rise as a world power by restricting the presence of leading Chinese telecommunications companies and equipment in their network infrastructure. The past several years have seen a targeted and expanding effort by countries to remove Huawei, one of the largest actors in the telecommunications sector, from their national markets. Huawei has responded to these regulatory measures by threatening to bring arbitration claims under China's bilateral investment treaties with several European states. Additionally, Huawei has filed a Request for Arbitration against Sweden for its exclusion from the 5G market. This note …

Deep Cuts: Bearing Witness To The Erosion Of Evidence, Maya Lakshmi Srinivasan Md May 2026

Deep Cuts: Bearing Witness To The Erosion Of Evidence, Maya Lakshmi Srinivasan Md

Masters Theses

In my Master of Fine Arts thesis in Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design, I examine the intersection of my dual practices as a general surgery resident and artist. Both disciplines require precision, incision, and tactility to navigate the human condition. My art practice is a method of processing the emotional toll of surgical training and the simultaneous societal erosion of scientific authority. My thesis work focuses on challenging the rise of medical pseudoscience and anti-intellectualism. The focal piece in this installation, In Tallow We Trust, consists of three woodblock relief prints at the scale of an …

Femmage Work, Mary Elizabeth Alford May 2026

Femmage Work, Mary Elizabeth Alford

Masters Theses

“Femmage Work”‭ ‬is a furniture collection that explores the relationship between adornment‭, ‬structure‭, ‬and feminine material culture‭. ‬Borrowing‭ ‬from materials‭, ‬practices‭, ‬and objects that are generally viewed as‭ ‬ feminine‭, ‬I seek to shift the perception of these objects and materials away from mere surface beauty‭, ‬an assumption that connotes a lack of taste‭, ‬depth‭, ‬and seriousness‭.‬‭ ‬

The purpose of this work to foster a collective sense of unity by adopting feminine typologies that‭ ‬ represent a shared experience‭. ‬It is meant to‭ ‬ cultivate the experience of‭ ‬‘girlhood’‭ ‬by using‭ ‬ historical feminine material culture and craft in …

Ambient Furniture, Andrew T. Goulet May 2026

Ambient Furniture, Andrew T. Goulet

Masters Theses

The designed object communicates an idea. Might that idea be an insight? This thesis seeks an ambient furniture of durable insight: objects that reward attention without demanding it, cultivating the conditions for a contemplative practice of everyday life.

Design is the materialization of mind. Through the conception and creation of things, thoughts are given form. Of all forms of thought, insight is the most precious. Insight contains within it the seed of transformation: to see into what was previously opaque.

Insight is empirical. It cannot be directly transmitted. It must be observed first-hand, rediscovered by each successive generation and translated …

Useful Useless Object, Jisu Han Jung May 2026

Useful Useless Object, Jisu Han Jung

Masters Theses

If spicy ramyun is spicy for others but not for me, is it still spicy

ramyun? This question begins Useful Useless Object, my investigation

into furniture as a site where function, perception, and value are

constantly negotiated rather than fixed. From this question, I

explore how meaning is shaped by the unstable relationship between

object and user. In furniture, usefulness is often treated as an

objective standard, measured by comfort, efficiency, or practicality.

However, this project argues that usefulness is never universal;

it is subjective, relational, and dependent on individual experience,

expectation, and desire.

Through making objects that sit between …

Negotiating The Shoreline, Shuqi Hu May 2026

Negotiating The Shoreline, Shuqi Hu

Masters Theses

This research examines sea otter reintroduction in Coos Bay as a spatial and temporal conflict between ecological processes and human activities. Through mapping and analysis, it identifies key misalignments between infrastructure, ecological rhythms, and human use.

Focusing on points of proximity, the project tests how landscape design can create conditions of visibility and engagement with coastal ecologies.

Rather than resolving large-scale conflicts, it proposes site-specific interventions that foster empathy and support adaptive relationships between human and non-human systems.

Exploring Clinical Ladder Program Participation Among Operating Room Nurses, Camille Sistoso-Lorenzana May 2026

Exploring Clinical Ladder Program Participation Among Operating Room Nurses, Camille Sistoso-Lorenzana

Doctoral Projects

Continuous professional development among nurses is vital, yet not all nurses embark on this career journey. The Clinical Ladder Program (CLP) is a retention strategy among various health institutions to retain talent and improve nurses' satisfaction, but this plan is unappealing or indifferent to some nurses. While the CLP is a motivation tool for nurses to focus on clinical expertise in bedside care (Riley et al., 2009), and resources are available to increase a nurse's chances of successfully advancing the ladder, participation in and perspectives on the CLP remain unknown, especially among operating room nurses. This project is guided by …

Boring Objects Bureau, Eric Fan May 2026

Boring Objects Bureau, Eric Fan

Masters Theses

The Boring Objects Bureau is an anti-sustainability design studio. Through its work, the Bureau is interested in developing new strategies that can challenge the stereotypes of what sustainability looks like for the products that underpin our modern lives.

The Bureau’s first investigation focused on the smartphone, a product where breakage and decay through obsolescence is inevitable. As a result, people are faced with either the expected sustainable approach of repair, which can be expensive and inconvenient, or replacement, which costs more and restarts the cycle. The Bureau therefore wanted to ask: could this breakage and decay instead be embraced as …

Lace Memory Lab, Xinyu Han May 2026

Lace Memory Lab, Xinyu Han

Masters Theses

Lace, originally developed from European religious garments, has long been treated as a decorative and secondary textile craft. With its delicate hand-weaving, intricate patterns, and lightweight quality, lace has been widely used in clothing and furniture, it has always remained at the edge of spatial design. This thesis focuses on lace as a material memory, exploring how its characteristics can be translated into architectural language and integrated into the spatial practice of adaptive reuse of old buildings. When I think of lace, I notice the similar nature of its craftsmanship and spatial concepts.

What happens when lace is no longer …

Providence Puzzle:Exhibition Design As Urban Spatial Practice, Ye Chen May 2026

Providence Puzzle:Exhibition Design As Urban Spatial Practice, Ye Chen

Masters Theses

Providence is a city shaped by past industrial production, immigrant communities, artistic practice, waterfront renewal, and urban redevelopment. Its identity exists not only in historical remnants, but also in the cultural atmosphere created through the ongoing interaction between past and present. Former factories, river infrastructure, neighborhood streets, public parks and scenes of everyday life together form an urban narrative that continues to evolve. Yet existing methods of presenting Providence’s history and culture remain limited to informational signage, commemorative markers, or one-directional communication, offering little incentive for people to stop, read, explore, or actively engage. As a city rich in both …

The Amplifier: Small Spaces, Loud Futures, Szewai Hong May 2026

The Amplifier: Small Spaces, Loud Futures, Szewai Hong

Masters Theses

Once nicknamed “Rock City,” Allston, MA has long been a creative hub known for its grassroots music culture. Historically the neighborhood has been home to many independent music spaces, nurturing generations of musicians. Relentless real estate development, the expansion of nearby institutions and ongoing inflation, has made the neighborhood increasingly unaffordable for the creatives and forced many to leave, diluting the once vibrant music community. Simultaneously, the shift toward digital music consumption has contributed to the disappearance of physical spaces where people once gathered to discover, discuss, and experience music collectively.

This thesis responds to these circumstances through an intervention …

How To Make A Jumpsuit, Xue Huang May 2026

How To Make A Jumpsuit, Xue Huang

Masters Theses

Through interdisciplinary artistic research combining illustration, embroidery, garment construction, and installation, this thesis investigates how patriarchal narratives become internalized within the female body and disconnect women from embodied forms of feminine knowledge and vitality.

Drawing from Michel Foucault’s theories of disciplinary power, Jungian psychology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and feminist writings by Audre Lorde and Karina Blancarte, the project examines how systems of productivity, control, and gendered ideology shape both psychological experience and bodily perception.

The thesis culminates in a large-scale textile installation titled How to Make a Jumpsuit, consisting of embroidered silk panels, commercial jumpsuit pattern pieces, meridian imagery, sculptural …

Draw To Breathe, Ranran Ma May 2026

Draw To Breathe, Ranran Ma

Masters Theses

This thesis explores visual expression in drawing as an intuitive mode of thinking suited to everyday life—a form of expression that runs parallel to language and surpasses it.

The project begins with a daily Post-it note drawing practice. These drawings often emerge before conscious understanding, subsequently accompanied by brief text, allowing image and word to resonate through emotion and intuition. Through the use of small-scale, portable, low-pressure materials, and with immediacy and intuitive freedom as the foundation of making, a visual language system grounded in the self develops. Through this sustained practice, I developed an instruction-based card system titled Draw …

The Porous Auto Body, Banshee Maria May 2026

The Porous Auto Body, Banshee Maria

Masters Theses

Balances within the human body and auto mechanical structures share a staggering amount in common. The two are intrinsically linked through their shared reliance on intricate internal and external systems to be in balance in order to function. Our biological makeup consists of electrical, fluid and chemical systems which mirror the machines we have chosen to forge. I am plagued by the human need to see ourselves mirrored in metal form, or perhaps we are just unable to create too far outside ourselves, resulting in the leeching of human structures into all technology we construct.

The Old Testament of the …

The Root Over My Eyes, Shiyeon Monk May 2026

The Root Over My Eyes, Shiyeon Monk

Masters Theses

What does it mean to have a body? To touch, to breathe, to taste, and perceive all the things that make up a person, how does it feel to recognize the physical bounds your mind is enclosed in? To me—a woman, a bisexual woman, a biracial bisexual woman, an immigrant biracial bisexual woman, a Black and East Asian immigrant biracial bisexual woman—each of these markers feels heavy with its own context of history, location, and interpretation. Too many times have I wondered what it is like to be within a body accepted as a midpoint.

I make work out of …

Huh? Wow!, Lieyah Dagan May 2026

Huh? Wow!, Lieyah Dagan

Masters Theses

I view design as a series of gestures: actions through which ideas are processed, refined, and communicated. Barbara Tversky, an American psychologist, describes gesture as a way of thinking through action, where movement becomes part of how understanding is formed (Tversky). In this sense, gesture is not only a means of communication between people, but a way of understanding and responding to the world through action.

My process begins with noticing—observing things in the world and returning to moments that hold a particular quality or possibility. Many of the things that draw my attention carry traces of movement or manipulation: …

Reading Exercise (You Are The Hero): Dedicated To The Providence River Under The Mall, 02.17.2026, Deborah Fischer

Masters Theses

This play uses the performative potential of guilt, forgiveness, and self-help techniques as a catalyst for a new dynamic, one in which the pursuit of a false narrative, along with the structures it generates, becomes more real than reality itself. It employs “bad acting” and the practice of cold reading to stage a series of acts that function as an entry point into one’s own psyche, leveraging the peripheral space around familiar actions to allow chance, free will, and the experience of “real time” to temporarily come into effect. PLAYER 1: The bad actor is the most utopian one. CLOWN: …
