Effect Of Electronic Portfolio Assessments On The Motivation And Computer Interest Of Fourth And Fifth Grade Students In A Massachusetts Suburban School, Paul V. Montesino

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

A preliminary causal-comparative study was conducted in an elementary suburban school in Massachusetts to investigate the impact of electronic portfolio assessments in student's intrinsic motivation and computer interest.

The target population were two groups of fourth grade and two groups of fifth grade students for a total of 77 subjects. They were trained and introduced to electronic portfolio assessments, a program which lasted for the entire school year. The students used Hyper Studio, a multimedia software program developed and marketed by Roger Wagner Publishing, Inc.

It was the intention of the elementary school program directors and teachers that students would …

A Simplified Faceted Approach To Information Retrieval For Reusable Software Classification, Victor Allen Nguyen Jan 1998

A Simplified Faceted Approach To Information Retrieval For Reusable Software Classification, Victor Allen Nguyen

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Software Reuse is widely recognized as the most promising technique presently available in reducing the cost of software production. It is the adaptation or incorporation of previously developed software components, designs or other software-related artifacts (i.e. test plans) into new software or software development regimes. Researchers and vendors are doubling their efforts and devoting their time primarily to the topic of software reuse. Most have focused on mechanisms to construct reusable software but few have focused on the problem of discovering components or designs to meet specific needs. In order for software reuse to be successful, it must be perceived …

Section 2254(D) Of The New Habeas Statute: An (Opinionated) User's Manual, Evan T. Lee Jan 1998

Section 2254(D) Of The New Habeas Statute: An (Opinionated) User's Manual, Evan T. Lee

Vanderbilt Law Review

The Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 made wholesale changes to the federal habeas corpus statute. In particular, the statute contains a new section 2254(d), which controls the standards that federal habeas courts must employ when reviewing state convictions. This new provision governing the standards of review applies generally to petitions filed after April 24, 1996, the effective date of the Act. The provision's text, however, is critically ambiguous in several respects. Because most of the federal circuit courts of appeal have not yet settled even basic interpretive questions about section 2254(d), federal district courts and circuit panels …

The Distribution And Long-Term Change In Banksia Ilicifolia Communities On The Gnangara Mound, Ryan Gurner Jan 1998

The Distribution And Long-Term Change In Banksia Ilicifolia Communities On The Gnangara Mound, Ryan Gurner

Theses : Honours

The Gnangara Mound is a large shallow groundwater aquifer which occurs in the superficial formations bounded by the Swan River, Ellenbrook, Gingin Brook, Moore River and the Indian Ocean on the northern Swan Coastal Plain. To protect terrestrial vegetation on the Gnangara Mound. groundwater levels must be maintained to allow plants access to water which is required for their survival. In areas with a shallow depth to groundwater, studies have shown that groundwater drawdown (reduction of the water table by any processes or factors) has a high potential to impact on the vegetation (Havel. 1968: Aplin. 1976: Heddle. 1980a: Dodd …

Genetic Approach For The Determination Of Object Parameters From X Ray Projections, Tayfun Günel, Sedef Kent Jan 1998

Genetic Approach For The Determination Of Object Parameters From X Ray Projections, Tayfun Günel, Sedef Kent

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a new method is presented, based on genetic algorithms for determining object parameters such as radii and/or attenuation coefficients with some assumptions and estimating a cross-sectional image of an object from its projections obtained by X ray illumination. After it was tested for projections degraded by different random noise levels, it was observed that the genetic and fuzzy genetic algorithms improved the signal to noise ratio of the projections. The fuzzy genetic algorithm gave better results than the genetic algorithm.

Phiber Optik And The Masters Of Deception, Loretta L. Lange Jan 1998

Phiber Optik And The Masters Of Deception, Loretta L. Lange

SWITCH

An exploration of Nam June Paik’s work entitled, 'Phiber Optik', one of thirty artworks in his installation Cybertown at the San Jose Museum of Art (Spring 1996). Paik employs the name, 'Phiber Optik', as an homage to the famous hacker Mark Abene, aka Phiber Optik. The article compares Abene, who spent most of his time in the “dark side” of digital information, to Nicholas Negroponte’s optimistic prediction of emancipatory powers of digitization in his book Being Digital. It elucidates the evolution of hackers and how their work became considered an artform as forerunners of an art movement the author refers …

Solicitor-Client Privilege And Litigation Privilege In Civil Litigation, Garry D. Watson, Frank Au Jan 1998

Solicitor-Client Privilege And Litigation Privilege In Civil Litigation, Garry D. Watson, Frank Au

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper examines the nature and scope of solicitor-client privilege and litigation privilege. Contrary to a recent article suggesting that there are no real differences between them, it is argued that the two privileges are distinct in terms of both their underlying purposes and the requisite conditions to invoke them. Most importantly, confidentiality is a requirement of solicitor-client privilege but not of litigation privilege. Moreover, extending solicitor-client privilege to communications from third parties (as proposed in the recent article) would be dangerous. It would stretch the scope of that privilege beyond its justification of necessity, and open the way for …

Year 2000 Hurdles And Controversies, Michael D. Schindler

Cleveland State Law Review

This article examines the hurdles and controversies of the Year 2000 problem. First, some background on the "Millennium Bug" explains the nature of the problem, how to fix it, and what it will cost. Next, the article discusses recent Year 2000 litigation. Then the article suggests that companies should implement a legal strategy to avoid potential liability by performing a legal audit of the Year 2000 problem. Additionally, the UCC and case law analysis are used to explain possible causes of action and who the plaintiffs and defendants will be. Other key legal issues analyzed are SEC disclosure requirements, insurance …

The Indians' Chief Problem: Chief Wahoo As State Sponsored Discrimination And A Disparaging Mark, Jack Achiezer Guggenheim Jan 1998

The Indians' Chief Problem: Chief Wahoo As State Sponsored Discrimination And A Disparaging Mark, Jack Achiezer Guggenheim

Cleveland State Law Review

This article traces the history of the Cleveland Indians and Chief Wahoo. It then suggests and assesses two methods by which the Chief Wahoo emblem may be legally challenged. The first method is to assert that Chief Wahoo, as used in Jacob's Field, is state sponsored discrimination. As such it could be challenged as a violation of equal protection or as racist speech. Alternatively, in addition to proving that the teams' actions should be deemed state actions, a new theory asserting that discriminatory state speech is a violation of the First Amendment could be advanced. Another method by which the …

Trade And Commerce At Sepphoris, Israel, Sarah Vansickle '98 Jan 1998

Trade And Commerce At Sepphoris, Israel, Sarah Vansickle '98

Honors Projects

Trade patterns in the Near East are the subject of conflicting interpretations. Researchers debate whether Galilean cities utilized trade routes along the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean or were self-sufficient, with little access to trade. An analysis of material culture found at specific sites can most efficiently determine the extent of trade in the region. If commerce is extensive, a significant assemblage of foreign goods will be found; an overwhelming majority of provincial artifacts will suggest minimal trade.
