Enhancing Student Learning Through Brain-Based Learning Techniques: A Handbook For Educators, Cynthia Gail Mcfarland Jan 1998

Enhancing Student Learning Through Brain-Based Learning Techniques: A Handbook For Educators, Cynthia Gail Mcfarland

All Graduate Projects

The significance of utilizing a brain-based approach to learning and teaching was researched. Current brain research indicates that often traditional educational methods are not conducive or are even detrimental to student learning. Several sources supported the brain-based learning, multiple intelligence, and learning styles theories. The research suggested that the brain-based learning approach has been beneficial not only to student learning but also to an increase in student motivation and self-esteem. A handbook for educators was created to compliment existing curriculum. This handbook features "brain friendly" strategies and activities that focus on rich and positive learning experiences that enable students to …

The Internet For Professional Communication: A Workshop Curriculum For Secondary Teachers, Ian James Loverro Jan 1998

The Internet For Professional Communication: A Workshop Curriculum For Secondary Teachers, Ian James Loverro

All Graduate Projects

Educators and administrators have begun to place a high priority on connecting classrooms to the Internet. However, classroom computer use remains at least one step removed from teachers and is used to sustain existing curricula rather than serving as a catalyst for educational improvement. Professional communication is a major instrument for initiating and implementing educational reform; the Internet represents a primary computer-based forum for professional development. The purpose of the project was to develop a sample in-service curriculum focusing on the use of e-mail, newsgroups, and listservs as tools for professional development and communication among secondary educators.

A Proposal For The Development Of Fort Hays State University Service Learning Program, Dan Kahl Jan 1998

A Proposal For The Development Of Fort Hays State University Service Learning Program, Dan Kahl

Higher Education

"Service Learning" is quickly becoming a style of education that is recognized for its' effectiveness and practical benefits. Linking class curriculum with hands-on applications is often referred to as "experiential education". Service Learning is a form of experiential education identified by an equal emphasis on academic learning and service to others. The combination of focusing on meeting community needs, identifying learning objectives, and intentionally reflecting on what is being learned makes service learning different from plain volunteerism or community service.

Service-Learning Projects In Composition And Beyond, Thomas Deans, Zan Meyer-Goncalves Jan 1998

Service-Learning Projects In Composition And Beyond, Thomas Deans, Zan Meyer-Goncalves

Higher Education

All college teachers want their courses to be relevant and provocative, and to encourage students to be more active learners of the discipline, participants in the academy, and citizens in the wider community. As teachers of composition, we first experimented with combining community service with classroom teaching because it promised to advance teaching aims we value, especially making connections between academic courses and community needs, and between cognitive thinking and ethical social action. And we continue with service-learning projects because our experience and students' responses suggest a significant degree of success in meeting those goals. But we are certainly not …

Community Service-Learning In Teacher Education: A Report On Innovative Programs In New England, Beth Wohlleb, Robert Maloy Jan 1998

Community Service-Learning In Teacher Education: A Report On Innovative Programs In New England, Beth Wohlleb, Robert Maloy

Higher Education

As the strengths of community service-learning are becoming more recognized by educators at all levels, many institutions of higher education are incorporating CSL as a dynamic pedagogy into their teacher education programs. Many schools or departments of education encourage or require certification candidates to perform CSL as part of their teacher training as ways to learn about the teaching profession through the practice of teaching and reflection. Fewer schools integrate service-learning into their teacher education program in another way: by teaching preservice teachers how to use service-learning as a pedagogy with children in their own future classrooms. This second group …

Expanding And Sustaining Partnerships, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 1998

Expanding And Sustaining Partnerships, Judith A. Ramaley

The Journal Of Jean Laffite: Its History And Controversy, Robert L. Schaadt Jan 1998

The Journal Of Jean Laffite: Its History And Controversy, Robert L. Schaadt

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Whether defined as original order or the history of ownership, provenance is one of the guiding lights of the archival profession, the key that guarantees the validity of documents in the archives. Archival material is rarely questioned, and authorship is seldom a topic of intense discussion. One assumes that the signer of the letter penned it except when secretaries were known to have been employed. Perhaps as a profession, however, archivists are too trusting and rely too often on provenance as a guiding light.

Documenting Industry And Labor In Alabama: Can A Documentation Strategy Model Help?, Martin T. Olliff Jan 1998

Documenting Industry And Labor In Alabama: Can A Documentation Strategy Model Help?, Martin T. Olliff

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

As early as 1997 the Society of Alabama Archivists (SALA) identified a number of topics in Alabama history and culture that were not well documented in the archives in the state. Some of these topics, for example North Alabama's aerospace industry, were just beginning to appear in archival collections. Alabama archivists took note of such fields early enough that the volume of accumulated records did not become a problem. On the other hand, archivists in the state faced enormous problems in coping with the mass of records they already knew existed in other underdocumented fields like labor and industry.

Look Before You Leap: Weaving Preservation Into Appraisal, Acquisition, Accessioning, And Processing Practices, Pam Hackbart-Dean, Theresa J. Montgomery

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Often the thrill of adventure and discovery propels archivists to pursue collections. While out in the field, few would pass up the opportunity to acquire an interesting collection that would enhance a repository's holdings or disregard an exciting find such as a love letter from a United States president or a personal diary. Sometimes, however, the excitement of discovery overshadows the daunting task of caring for these collections after they have been acquired. Regardless of the manner in which archival materials are acquired by a repository-whether by law, institutional mandate, purchase, or gift-it is important to evaluate the condition and …

Visual Impairment And Its Affects On Gross Motor Development: A Literature Review And Implications For Physical Therapy, Jodi A. Toenjes

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Visual impairment, or blindness, in the pediatric population has been shown to affect several key areas of gross motor development. Many of these areas can be positively influenced by physical therapy techniques. However, some physical therapy curriculums do not teach this topic of study because the prevalence of blindness is low. The purpose of this study is to develop a teaching manual that will provide the physical therapist with specific exercises, activities, and helpful hints that will facilitate the treatment of a patient with blindness in a pediatric setting.

The manual includes information regarding common mannerisms of the blind population …

Seeing Is Believing: A Practitioner's Guide To The Admissibility Of Demonstrative Computer Evidence, 1998 John M. Manos Writing Competition On Evidence , Karen D. Butera

Cleveland State Law Review

As computer equipment itself becomes more financially accessible, more experts are using computer simulations as demonstrative evidence during their trial testimony. However, this use of computer simulations presents several novel, complex issues. Part II will explore the backgrounds of demonstrative evidence, computerization, and the use of computer simulation for demonstrative evidence. Part III will discuss and analyze several relevant issues, including attorney training, expert knowledge, judicial confusion, additional evidentiary issues, and the possible prejudicial influence of demonstrative computer simulations. This discussion concludes with some general thoughts regarding the use of demonstrative computer simulation to illustrate expert testimony.

Creating Community Through Art: Two Research Project Reviews, Seymour Simmons Iii

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Against a background of contemporary social problems and concerns, this article considers the role of the arts in creating community. It begins with a synopsis of Ellen Dissanayake’s anthropological perspective on the importance of the arts in human evolution, human development, and premodern societies. It then considers current approaches to community-building through the arts based on two recent research projects done by Harvard Project Zero and its affiliates. One project, the Lincoln Center Institute Arts-in-Education Survey Study, reviewed twenty-two arts-in-education programs including community art centers, cultural centers, arts-infusion schools, and state and local arts councils. The other, Project Co-Arts, involved …

Sugar And Spice And Everything: Reflections On A Feminist Aesthetic, Deborah Smith-Shank Jan 1998

Sugar And Spice And Everything: Reflections On A Feminist Aesthetic, Deborah Smith-Shank

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Over the past 25 years, feminist art, art criticism, and action have allowed insights in to the work of women artists. Because culture imposes an assumed unity on a diversity of codes and has a naturalizing function, it makes the status quo appear as given and enduring. Feminist artwork disrupts common cultural assumptions by purposefully calling into question the arbitrariness of cultural sign systems. It brings into the conversation those cultural signs which are routinely unexamined and forces a look. This article is about feminist artwork, feminist context (s), and my own development as a woman, artist, teacher, and participant …
