Selecting Linear-Score Distributions For Modeling Milk-Culture Results, H. G. Allore, David J. Wilson, H. N. Erb, P. A. Oltenacu

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

The data for this cross-sectional retrospective study are from surveys of 65 dairy-cattle herds in central New York, USA sampled between February, 1993 and March, 1995. The objective was to identify probability distributions of logarithmically transformed somatic-cell counts (linear score) for use in a simulation model of mastitis and milk quality. Probability density functions were estimated using maximum-likelihood estimators for the linear score of individual-cow composite milk samples culture negative and culture positive for the pathogens Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus non-agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, and coagulase-negative staphylococci for the complete dataset and by bulk-tank somatic-cell count group (< 500 000, ≥ 500 000 SCC/ml). Based on the rankings of three goodness-of-fit tests (Anderson-Darling, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and x2 …

Agricultural Water Quality Index, Jeffrey Cooper, Richard Rediske, Melvin Northup, Mark Thogerson, Jonathan Van Denend Jan 1998

Agricultural Water Quality Index, Jeffrey Cooper, Richard Rediske, Melvin Northup, Mark Thogerson, Jonathan Van Denend

Scientific Technical Reports

The primary purpose of the Agricultural Water Quality Index (AWQI) is to provide the agricultural community with a practical technical method for conducting cost-effective water quality assessments of rivers and streams in agroecosystems. The protocols presented have been derived from extensive literature review and the results of field research in agroecosystems performed during the summer of 1997 by the authors of this index. This assessment tool is not intended to replace those already in use by state agencies or to be used without regional modifications.

The Compromise Of '38 And The Federal Courts Today, John H. Robinson Jan 1998

The Compromise Of '38 And The Federal Courts Today, John H. Robinson

Journal Articles

In 1998 the legal community of the United States should stop and take stock of two epochal events in the history of the federal judicial system. One of those events, as readers of a procedure symposium do not need to be told, is the sixtieth anniversary of the introduction of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. I shall have more to say about that event presently, but I want first to devote a few paragraphs to a second event, one which proceduralists ignore at their peril. The event I have in mind is the initiation of a new era of …

The Christian Jurisprudence Of Robert E. Rodes Jr., Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1998

The Christian Jurisprudence Of Robert E. Rodes Jr., Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

When I had the chance to leave law practice and become a fulltime law teacher, I turned, in the time-honored fashion, for advice from my law teachers. The most memorable and persistent of these—the most cheerful, too, and therefore the most hopeful—was Robert E. Rodes, Jr., then a young (36), transplanted New Yorker, Harvard law graduate, and Boston lawyer. He had already come to flourish, in the Aristotelian sense, in the Midwest—in a Catholic university known more for its football players than for its lawyers.

Rodes told me he had come to teaching and to Notre Dame because he wanted …

Venomous Snakes: Wildlife Damage Management Series, Terry A. Messmer, G. W. Wiscomb

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Utah is home to 31 species of snakes. Of these, seven are venomous. The seven Utah venomous snakes are members of the Viperidae family and are commonly called pit vipers because of the pit located between their nostrils and eyes. (See Figure 1.) These Utah venomous snake species include: the sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes), speckled rattlesnake (C. mitchellii), mojave rattlesnake (C. scutulatus), western rattlesnake (C. viridis), Hopi rattlesnake (C.V. nuntius), midget-faded rattlesnake (C.V. concolor), and the Great Basin rattlesnake (C.V. lutosus).

Nonvenomous Snakes: Wildlife Damage Management Series, Terry A. Messmer, G. W. Wiscomb

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Snakes are probably the most feared and misunderstood animals known. There are over 200 species of snakes in the U. S., most of which (about 170) are non-venomous. Utah is home to 31 species of snakes. Of these, 24 are non-venomous. Since these snakes are more abundant, chances are that when most Utahns encounter a snake it will be non-venomous. (See Figure 1.)

Individual Responsibility For The Investment Of Retirement Savings: A Cautionary View, Jeffrey N. Gordon Jan 1998

Individual Responsibility For The Investment Of Retirement Savings: A Cautionary View, Jeffrey N. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

These papers, including ones presented earlier this morning, raise questions about an adequate regime of consumer protection in an era in which responsibility for retirement savings and investment decisionmaking is being devolved, increasingly, to individuals. This shift to individual responsibility has also characterized many Social Security reform proposals, previously a bedrock system of publicly determined benefit levels. I find this devolution troubling; I think it is odd for individuals to have this responsibility. Individuals are not good risk bearers of market volatility, both in a financial sense and in a psychological sense. The consequence is that unless individuals are locked …

Property And The Right To Exclude, Thomas W. Merrill Jan 1998

Property And The Right To Exclude, Thomas W. Merrill

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court is fond of saying that "the right to exclude others" is "one of the most essential sticks in the bundle of rights that are commonly characterized as property." I shall argue in this Essay that the right to exclude others is more than just "one of the most essential" constituents of property – it is the sine qua non. Give someone the right to exclude others from a valued resource, i.e., a resource that is scarce relative to the human demand for it, and you give them property. Deny someone the exclusion right and they do not …

Police, Community Caretaking, And The Fourth Amendment, Debra A. Livingston Jan 1998

Police, Community Caretaking, And The Fourth Amendment, Debra A. Livingston

Faculty Scholarship

The local police have multiple responsibilities, only one of which is the enforcement of criminal law. Police gather eyewitness accounts in the aftermath of a shooting, but they also assist lost children in locating their parents. Police identify and arrest those who have committed felonies, but they also respond to heart attack victims and help inebriates find their way home. Sometimes police check on the well-being of elderly citizens. As Professor Goldstein said some twenty years ago, "The total range of police responsibilities is extraordinarily broad .... Anyone attempting to construct a workable definition of the police role will typically …

A Case Study Of Four Fifth Grade Teachers And Their Perceptions Of How And Why They Teach Science, Ana K. Houseal Jan 1998

A Case Study Of Four Fifth Grade Teachers And Their Perceptions Of How And Why They Teach Science, Ana K. Houseal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of four 5th grade teachers and their perceptions of the influences on how and why they taught science in their classrooms. The four participating teachers who were from three school districts in Iowa were observed teaching science lessons and interviewed following the observations. The results of the study showed that the data obtained during the observations and interviews focused on three major themes. The first theme centered on the teachers' perceptions of changes in teaching elementary science. These included a move away from text-based learning with a subsequent move …

Use Of Rapds To Develop Specific Primers For The Identification Of Mycorrhizal Fungi, Cynthia A. Boyd Jan 1998

Use Of Rapds To Develop Specific Primers For The Identification Of Mycorrhizal Fungi, Cynthia A. Boyd

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The restoration of damaged ecosystems, particularly at superfund sites is a complex issue. These sites present problems with revegetation attempts due to their unique chemical, physical, and biological properties. Revegetation of damaged ecosystems may be enhanced by mycorrhizal associations. The establishment of a facultative mycotroph, Festuca arundinacea Screb. (tall fescue) treated with a commercial fungal inoculum, was studied at a Galena, Kansas mining site. The evaluation of this revegetation project required the identification of endomycorrhizal fungi, Glomus c/arum and G/omus etunicatum in the inoculum. Traditional identification of these fungi based on spore morphology and other physical characteristics is not suitable …

Religious Law And Civil Law: Using Secular Law To Assure Observance Of Practices With Religious Significance, Kent Greenawalt Jan 1998

Religious Law And Civil Law: Using Secular Law To Assure Observance Of Practices With Religious Significance, Kent Greenawalt

Faculty Scholarship

Civil law in the United States rarely helps to enforce religious standards or demands that people perform actions whose significance relates to religious obligations. Yet, some American states do have such involvement with certain observances of Orthodox and Conservative Judaism. Many states enforce kosher requirements, to which Orthodox and some Conservative Jews adhere. The laws, which penalize fraud in the labeling of products as kosher, serve the secular interest in preventing deception of consumers. However, the laws also force the state to decide when religious regulations have been violated.

Orthodox and Conservative Jewish divorces raise a second kind of involvement. …

Dispersal Patterns Of Subadult And Adult Colorado Squawfish In The Upper Colorado River, D. B. Osmundson, Ronald J. Ryel, M. E. Tucker, D. B. Burdick, W. R. Elmblad, T. E. Chart

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Abstract.—We investigated distribution and dispersal patterns of subadult and adult Colorado squawfish Ptychocheilus lucius (recently renamed the Colorado pikeminnow) throughout their range in the upper Colorado River. Annual, river-wide, capture–recapture data were used to document movements during a 5-year period (1991–1995). Average total length of Colorado squawfish progressively increased upstream: juveniles and subadults occurred almost exclusively in the lowermost 105 km of the 298-km study area, whereas most adults were concentrated in the uppermost 98 km. This was most pronounced early in the study and less so later due to the effect of two or three strong year-classes that dispersed …

Designing A Higher Layer Protocol For Small Distributed Microcontroller Systems Using The Control Area Network Protocol, Long G. Nguyen Jan 1998

Designing A Higher Layer Protocol For Small Distributed Microcontroller Systems Using The Control Area Network Protocol, Long G. Nguyen

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis is concerned with designing a Higher Layer Protocol (HLP) for small distributed microcontroller systems using a well-established network protocol: the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol which, currently, is widely used in the automation industries. Steps were taken to investigate three popular HLPs based on the CAN protocol: namely. Smart Distributed System (SDS), DeviceNet. and CAN Kingdom. Following the comparison of the three HLPs, the CAN Kingdom protocol was chosen for the task of designing the HLP in this project in order to satisfy the restrictions associated with small systems. Thus, the HLP (named the Small CAN Kingdom protocol) …

Technological Change And Women’S Participation In Crop Production In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Jk Routray Jan 1998

Technological Change And Women’S Participation In Crop Production In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Jk Routray

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

There is a dearth of information on the employment effects of modern agricultural tech nology on rural women in Bangladesh. The present study1 looks at women's participation in crop production activities, examines their influence in the diffusion of modern technol ogy and their participation in the hired labor market. Data for this study comes from two intensive surveys conducted in the crop years 1989 and 1996 in three agro-ecological regions of Bangladesh. Findings suggest that the prevailing claim-that women are involved only in post- harvest processing of crops-underestimates their contribution to agricultural production. Women's share of total labor is 10-18 …

Emotional Hijacking Versus Safe Behavior., Christopher Monteressi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research investigated the types of reasoning used by coal mine employees when exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Information was gathered through interviews of coal miners who related actual experiences in the coal mines. The information in the interviews and in the review of the literature was used to develop and implement an experiential program that promoted an individual's responsibility for their safety and the safety of co-workers. The experiential program addressed safe work behaviors from the perspectives of emotional and cognitive memories and the functions of the human brain. This program had three overall objectives of assisting miners to …

Toxicity And Toxicokinetics Of Cadmium In Capitella Sp. I: Relative Importance Of Water And Sediment As Routes Of Cadmium Uptake, Henriette Selck, Valery E. Forbes, Thomas L. Forbes Jan 1998

Toxicity And Toxicokinetics Of Cadmium In Capitella Sp. I: Relative Importance Of Water And Sediment As Routes Of Cadmium Uptake, Henriette Selck, Valery E. Forbes, Thomas L. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

The importance of dissolved versus sediment-bound cadmium as uptake routes for the deposit-feeding polychaete Capitella species I and the toxicity and toxicokinetics of cadmium from these exposure routes were investigated. Effects were reported as changes in worm growth rate, egestion rate and allometry. Radioactive cadmium (109Cd) was used as a tracer to examine the uptake (5 d) and subsequent depuration (6 d) of cadmium. Both effects and kinetics were investigated in systems with and without sediment. Individual Capitella sp. I were exposed to (1) dissolved (i.e. –1). Worms in water-only treatments showed negative growth rates, which decreased linearly …
