Chondrocranial Anatomy And Skeletogenesis In Dendrobates Auratus, Rafael O. De Sá, Shannon Hill Jan 1998

Chondrocranial Anatomy And Skeletogenesis In Dendrobates Auratus, Rafael O. De Sá, Shannon Hill

Biology Faculty Publications

The larval chondrocranium and visceral skeleton of Dendrobates auratus ls described and compared with those of other dendrobatids. Four characters, i.e. lack of fusion between orbital cartilages and otic capsules, wide processus muscularis palatoquadrati, lack of processus pseudopterygoideus, and lack of processus anterolateralis hyalis, represent derived conditions for Dendrobates within Dendrobatidae. Cranial and postcranial ossification sequences are reported for D. auratus and Epipedobates tricolor. Skeletogenesis is earlier in E. tricolor, but the overall pattern of ossification is similar in the two species.

The Effects Of Teacher Involvement In Classroom-Based Intervention For Vocabulary Acquisition And Classroom Communication Skills, Alexis A. Paramboukas Jan 1998

The Effects Of Teacher Involvement In Classroom-Based Intervention For Vocabulary Acquisition And Classroom Communication Skills, Alexis A. Paramboukas

Masters Theses

The present study investigated curricular vocabulary acquisition in children enrolled in grades kindergarten through third. A collaborative classroom-based treatment approach was compared with a classroom-based "SLP-teach" method of intervention. Children at the collaborative school received a curricular language lesson in the classroom which was team taught by the classroom teacher and speech-language pathologist. The speech-language pathologist and classroom teacher met weekly to determine curricular vocabulary words and materials for the lessons. Children at the SLP-teach school received the same curricular language lessons, however, the classroom teachers were not present during the lessons and collaborative planning did not occur between the …

Habitat Selection, Reproductive Success, And Impaling Patterns Of A Migratory Population Of Loggerhead Shrikes, Jeffrey D. Esely Jr.

Masters Theses

I studied habitat selection and reproductive success of a migratory population of Loggerhead Shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus migrans) as well as the temporal and spatial patterns of impaling exhibited by this population during the nesting season. The selection of breeding habitat was investigated at different spatial scales. Thirty-eight (67%) of 57 nests were located in osage orange (Maclura pomifera) trees. Shrike territories (area ≤ 200 m from nest site) contained significantly more pasture, fenceline, and perch sites, but less com, alfalfa, and forest than random sites. At larger spatial scales, more grassland was detected within 300 m …

Private Religious Choice In German And American Constitutional Law: Government Funding And Government Religious Speech, Ingrid Wuerth Jan 1998

Private Religious Choice In German And American Constitutional Law: Government Funding And Government Religious Speech, Ingrid Wuerth

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The sharply contested religion cases from Germany in the late 1990s...point to problems with our growing reliance on private religious choice analysis that demand our attention in both government funding and speech cases. To understand the problems of funding religious groups in neutral programs, we must back up and ask the foundational question: what goals may the government pursue with its funding? The broader those goals are defined, the greater the potential distortion of private religious choice, through either inclusion or exclusion from the programs. To fully make sense of government funding and the Establishment Clause, we must consider its …

Judicial Independence: Playing Politics With The Constitution, Suzanna Sherry Jan 1998

Judicial Independence: Playing Politics With The Constitution, Suzanna Sherry

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

I begin with a question: why have a conference on judicial independence? To find the answer, one need only read the newspapers. Judicial independence-as well as its political counterpart, judicial impeachment-is a hot topic these days because some in Congress have threatened to impeach judges for delivering unpopular decisions. So I take as my subject in this Essay the question of whether the constitutional provisions safeguarding judicial independence protect judges against impeachment for issuing rulings that Congress considers erroneous or even loathsome. When we talk about judicial independence, we have to separate two questions. The first question is the extent …

Taming The Suburban Amoeba In The Ecosystem Age: Some Do's And Don'ts, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Urban central cities present a host of environmental problems including, but not limited to, industrial pollution, brownfields, smog, and environmental injustice. Rural and agricultural areas also experience environmental degradations such as pesticide runoff, wetlands conversion, and overgrazing. Between these different bands of lifestyle and land use lie the suburbs, which present their own set of environmental policy issues. This Article focuses on one of those problems: the growth of suburban land area and what it means for emerging notions of ecosystem management and sustainable development at the local land use scale. Part I of the Article provides the demographic and …

Recommendations For An Environmentally Sound Federal Policy On Western Water, Reed D. Benson Jan 1998

Recommendations For An Environmentally Sound Federal Policy On Western Water, Reed D. Benson

Faculty Scholarship

The organizations and individuals who have produced this report have worked for years to promote environmentally sound federal policy and action with respect to water in the American West. The Western Water Policy Review Advisory Commission's (the "Commission") evaluation of these issues presents an excellent opportunity to address long-standing concerns. We believe the Commission can help advance federal policy to promote sustainable use, management and protection of western waters. We begin with a brief look at current water problems in the West from our perspective. We then identify four general priorities for the federal government: taking steps toward restoring more …

Great individual variation was determined in the carbon and nitrogen contents of Arctodiaptomus bacillifer, Furthermore, the length-weight regressions varied greatly for the, other zooplanktonic organisms according to sampling dates and, for some, to sampling points.

Influence Of Sediment On Heavy Metal Uptake By The Polychaete Arenicola Marina, Levent Bat Jan 1998

Influence Of Sediment On Heavy Metal Uptake By The Polychaete Arenicola Marina, Levent Bat

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the suitability of the polychaete Arenicola marina as a test organism using clean intertidal sediment contaminated with copper, zinc and cadmium was evaluated. Metal levels in casts were significantly lower than in unworked sediment indicating that the bioturbatory activity of lugworms might be significant in the distribution of the pollutants. This study showed that sediments contaminated with specific pollutants affected the uptake of these pollutants by Arenicola in a predictable and dose–dependant way and gave further justification for the use of this species in sediment toxicity tests.
